Katy Perry in Tadashi Shoji at the “Smurfs 2″ Premiere

Posted on July 29, 2013

And now… a little Sophisti-Katy:

Katy Perry attends the premiere of “Smurfs 2″ at the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood, California in a Tadashi Shoji blue leather dress with mesh bodice and flower detailing paired with Pedro García shoes.

Tadashi Shoji Fall 2013 Collection

Well, it’s a hell of a far cry from her first Smurfs movie premiere dress, which remains one of T Lo’s all-time favorite red carpet looks. But to everything there is a season, and even silly pop stars sometimes want to put their breasts away and stop dressing like slutty clowns, so we suppose we should just support her in her quest for chic. Even Katy Perry wants to grow up eventually, kittens.

We’re not inclined to love an all-one-color look like this, but we’ll put aside our normal shrieks of “MATCHY!!!” just this one time. It’s theme dressing. Almost every lady showed up at this event wearing blue. The bodice is pretty but the skirt looks extremely heavy in comparison and seems to just hang off her. We could forgive the matchy shoes, but those are pure 1965 bridesmaid matchy shoes and that’s perhaps a bridge too far for us. A dress like this needed something modern, because it’s a retro style with a modern twist. You pair it with retro shoes and the whole “modern twist” thing goes away.

Basically, it’s a disappointingly limp entry for a “Katy Perry at the premiere of Smurfs2″ look.

I feel like the skirt is too long as well. The shoes are really bad.

    • ampg

Yes, taking about six inches off the skirt and the whole look would lighten up quite a bit. I love the shoes, but I agree that they don’t really work here.

Gotta say, regardless of the venue, that is one damned wonderful color on her. And its a nice change to see her in something that fits, but not like a coat of spray paint.

    • Beardslee

Yes, she is made to wear vivid jewel tones like this.

A leather skirt in July is always going to be a dumb idea unless your name is Nanook.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

One can only hope the venue is air conditioned. whew.

      • ballerinawithagun

The skirt in silk would have been lovely…but then everything would have really been fit for a bridesmaid. Maybe a larger, tough, comic book belt would help. But great color! Somehow I want those black and white Christian Siriano shoes with this.

      • jen

Seriously! What’s with all the summertime leather???

        • Aurumgirl

I’m not sure leather is so bad in summer. It is skin, after all; and skin does breathe. Better than cotton, or even linen, and certainly better than any synthetic.

          • demidaemon

With treatments, lining, and construction, I can’t imagine it breathes all that well.

  • imspinningaround

I can’t be the only person whose first thought here was, “Ugh, it’s so LITERAL.”

    • demidaemon

Yes, but that’s pretty much the point.

  • nannypoo

I love the fabric in the bodice and the color is beautiful on her.

  • MilaXX

She needs a better shoe, but it’s a decent look on her. I kinda miss the Katy who would have worn the smurf dress though.

    • MoHub

And would have had her hair dyed blue.

      • Stella Zawistowski

Yeah, I wish she’d dyed her hair blue instead of wearing a blue dress and shoes. It just seems so…LITERAL.

    • Jessica Freeman

I read an article somewhere, where she basically said she’s done being crazy Katy with blue hair and fun clothes. She will be missed.

      • Qitkat

That’s too bad, because my first thought was I miss Katy with the blue hair. She was the only celebrity I’ve really enjoyed consistently with the crazy clothes and hair. Others like Riri and Lady Gaga wore me out early on.

    • RebeccaKW

I think this dress with a super short skirt, like the Smurf dress, would have been better. Obviously, she doesn’t want to repeat the Smurfette dress, but I think a short, flippy skirt would have referenced the character nicely.

  • lexilexi

I’m just happy to see a starlet of her genre who isn’t tattooed from stern to bow.

She looks very pretty, but what’s that smell? Ohhhh, it’s Eau De Douche, John Mayer Addition. Cheapens every woman’s best attempts.

  • veleri

I don’t know, the skirt screams “OLD”.

Thanks for reminding me about the first dress—don’t know how, but I had forgotten about it. I do like her much better with dark hair; the blonde just doesn’t suit her coloring. And that particular royal blue (around these parts, it’s called “Duke Blue”) is just smashing on her. Overall, not a bad look at all, considering it’s the premiere of a Smurfs movie.

    • imakeart

Woo hoo on the Duke blue!

  • SewingSiren

She really knows how to stand by a movie theme.

  • Patrick Cleary

Smurfs 2 is really just a paycheck for all involved, so I’d forgive them if they all showed up fresh from McDonald’s in fashions straight from Kohl’s with the tags still on.

  • VeryClaire

Love the color, love the dress. I also love the shoes but I agree a bit much with this dress.

  • Aaminah Khan

I actually really want the shoes. I have some dresses they’d go adorably with. :3

  • TLJezebel

I think it looks a little matronly, no? It’s making her look thick and I know she’s not.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

I loved it, until I realized that the skirt is LEATHER! Still the blue is very pretty and Smurfy, but honestly…leather?

  • kmk05

…She looks like Barbie’s depressed friend. Kind of cookie-cutter, no fun, Katy-bot Katy Perry. Nothing’s WRONG with the outfit except it’s fit for somone attending a themed funeral. That skirt is dragging everything down.

I don’t even know if I’m making sense.

  • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

It’s a great change for her. I love something on Katie that is slightly understated, and it fits well. The shoes are a bit much but I hate to pick her apart because she dared to be “normal.” The bodice is beautiful.

  • thecitysleeps

I think she looks beautiful. I love the dress, hair and make up. Don’t like the shoes though.

  • formerlyAnon

If the premise is that she’s trying to grow up in her fashion choices, I’m behind this 100%.

  • jen

Ha, slutty clowns. Nice try Miss Katy, but I’m not feeling this look.

  • marlie

It’s fine, except her boobs look lopsided.

  • BeeBeauNYC

I want to be Katy Perry – love love love her and her style. She’s on my irrational love list – I don’t know but I love every damn thing she does.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I love the blue on her, it’s a great color, and I like the style of both the dress and the shoes. They’re a bit too matchy-matchy together, so I wish she hadn’t done that. But mostly, I’m so disappointed that she didn’t do something crazy like she did for the first “Smurf” movie – this isn’t exactly the kind of movie premiere to attempt sophistication.

  • Toni

But what about the photo of Katy with her grandmother?!? The lady is wearing a t-shirt with “I’ve got the hots for Papa Smurf” that is adorable and endearing.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

    I like this…even the shoes.

  • CommentsByKatie

This depresses me. I also immediately compared it to her Smurfs 1 premiere dress, and then clicked back the link TLo provided to look at the pictures. She was silly and glowing and grinning in those pictures. In these pictures, she’s wearing a sad color and fake smiling. Poor Katy Perry. Please be okay, darling. I love you.

  • Frenchie_M

This reminds me of that burgundy Halle Berry Oscar dress with the “strategic” floral appliques. And that was how many years ago?

  • AnneElliot

I was just relieved that the bodice wasn’t made out of lace. I’m so over that trend.

  • allisankelly

Those shoes are quite similar to the dyeables I got at Payless back in 1989 for sr prom!

  • quiltrx

So pretty! What a great color on her.
But hell, she should have worn the Smurfette dress again! C’mon girl, when is it ever going to be appropriate again?

  • ItsDicey

Gosh, I miss the old Katy. Sad face.

  • makeityourself

Hiddy. And she looks like she’s wearing a “July 31st” tiara.

  • HobbitGirl

Gotta disagree! I love the leather skirt – it gives a great edginess to the retro design. She looks lovely here.

  • A.

Much agreed on the matchy thing! I could have loved the entire thing MUCH better if the shoes werent die to match so awfully. But from the knees up…love it.

  • MannahattaMamma

I would like to ask a larger question, which is why on earth anyone would have a premiere for a SMURFS movie? Really? really?
