Kate Hudson in Elie Saab at the Novak Djokovic Foundation Dinner

Posted on July 09, 2013

Kate’s not exactly someone who dresses with the idea of bring the drama, but she’s done us proud on that front this time.

Kate Hudson attends the Novak Djokovic Foundation London gala dinner at The Roundhouse in London, UK in an Elie Saab dress from the Spring 2013 collection paired with Christian Louboutin pumps and clutch.

Because if nothing else, at least it’s not bland.

We kinda-sorta dig this. We’ll never fully embrace the mullet hem but we can appreciate the effect it brings on a windy red carpet. We like the beading on the dress, and we love the shoes and bag. We just think the latter items are fighting with the look. Shoes and bag with that much attitude need to be deployed judiciously, and paired with less attention-seeking garments. There’s also the fact that she’s the same shade of pewter-gray from head to toe. Even her nails and eye makeup are silver-grey. A little breaking up of the color scheme (such as it is) would’ve gone a long way. The lips are standing out because they’re the only color to be seen – and we’re not convinced that’s the right lip shade for the look. And finally, we’re just not in love with the overall shape.

But, positive reinforcement, Katie! This is good, hon. Seriously. We have quibbles, but we can’t deny you’re bringing it.

    Love this!

  • Introspective

definitely my quibble is that the entire look from hair to toe is pewter. (seriously kate werent you bottle blonde a second ago?)

but the dress does turn heads once the weather is in her favor. i imagine without that wind that she looked like a shapeless column. but werq those elements hon.

    • ballerinawithagun

Yes, her previously blonde hair would have looked wonderful!

    • Little_Olive

Yes, setting off the pewter with more gold-based tones (hair, makeup or accessories) would have made a big difference, as it is not a usual combination and looks great with her coloring.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Agree on all points. Mostly I love it. Love the pewter color of the dress and the clutch is fantastic!!

  • gabbilevy

The biggest quibble eye I have is the beading is giving her lumpy/saggy boob look, which is clearly an illusion. Love that she brought Solange’s Wind Machine with her.

    • ballerinawithagun

The beading would have been much more attractive in a V triangular shape.

    • decormaven

      Solange shares! Who’da thunk?

    • Mismarker

Solange’s Wind Machine is the name of my new fake band.

  • I really love this. Lemme tell you why. I love that it’s not an obvious body hugging shape. It shows self confidence. I love the sophistication of the monotone pallet. I love pink and grey together so her chosen pop of color pleases me. Her makeup is gorgeous here and her smile has never failed to light me up. Oh, and I love the play of soft and flowy vs spikes and chains.

    • I am seriously loving the lip color. And she’s giving some serious Keira-Knightley-mouth realness.

    • Rhonda Shore

Agree, the flowiness of it really works for her and I like the accessories and lipstick…

    • StellaZafella

Seriously great dress for movement and creating drama. Could be a bit of a problem if there wasn’t a bit of a breeze…or someone who understands the art of the pose.

  • SugarSnap108

Agreed. I kind of love the drama of the dress, but the head-to-toe pewter (even her hair is mostly pewter) is too much. And the styling is overdone. The clutch looks like a Viking weapon — which is not a bad thing, just too much here. The lip color makes me sad, but her eyes look amazing.

    • conniemd

Agree about the clutch. In the first pic it looked like she was carrying a porcupine or a doggy brush.

    • demidaemon

The Viking weaponness of it all is what makes me love it.

  • RebeccaKW

I like it. The color is great on her.

I always thought she favored her mom, but here, she really looks like Diane Lane.

  • BerlinerNYC

Loving the darker hair color. I strongly, sadly suspect that that lip color is the result of that weird Almay liquid lip balm she’s been shilling (when was the last time Kate Hudson starred in anything but an Almay commercial?), which I was just commenting to a friend yesterday make it look like someone had put magic marker on her lips.

    • Spicytomato1

I love the darker hair, too. It’s flattering and to me she looks less “cookie cutter blonde starlet” (which is how I generally regarded her) this way.

      • TropiCarla

Yes to this. The hair looks so great. Also those shoes are killa … it helps that they actually fit her foot.

    • Bless her heart, she’s filming right now with James Franco. I think I would have had to stick with fading obscurity, rather than take that gig.

  • ashtangajunkie

I love this; however, I do wish that her nails were a different colour.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

    Love everything except the dress.

  • filmcricket

Hate the dress and the hair. Love the accessories and her eye makeup.

  • Mrs. Julien

I always feel happy for ladystars when they are on the red carpet wearing something that looks comfortable. Except those shoes, I bet she kicks those off the first chance she gets.

  • I think sandals or something strappy would have been a better shoe choice.

  • imakeart

Any idea whose bracelets? Love them.

    • decormaven

Ditto. Loving that mix of metals.

  • Gwynn Freund

I’d be afraid the bag would snag the dress. She seems to be channeling Jo Anne Worley.

  • MoHub

I think the mullet works on this because it gives the illusion of a floor-length cape over a short dress, and by appearing to be two garments, it’s less jarring on the eyes.

  • Sobaika

Oooh, she looks fab. She should stick to this hair and makeup – it’s different and she wears it well. Distances her from the McConaughey rom-com image she’s had over the last few years.

  • barbarienne

I love this. This is the sort of dress that I want to point to when people get down on the mullet hem (I don’t love mullet hems, but I don’t hate them. Peplums are far, far more egregious in my opinion).

I don’t care if her clutch is the right thing with this look. She looks as if she’s carrying around a pet hedgehog, which thought makes me smile.

    • conniemd

As I said above, I thought it was a porcupine at first glance. LOL

  • decormaven

Boo on the match-y nail color. Woman, if you’ve deployed these amazing shoes and clutch, don’t ruin it with some lame Pinterest nails. Save that for the toddlers.

  • Judy_S

I like the monochrome -spiky look. On the one hand, lots of textures to pay attention to, on the other, the gray keeps you aware of her face and body.

  • formerlyAnon

Adds up to less than the sum of its many very good parts.

In the end, it looks over-dramatic. I might like it more in the setting of the event, if it was formal, but it isn’t impressive on a brightly lit, outdoor(?) “red” carpet.

  • Janet B

That’s a funny little clutch, it’s making me smile.
I think Kate looks fantastic, but this isn’t a look I want to see her wear often.

  • lrober03

Don’t love the hem, but I think the bling and fabric is perfectly appropriate for this type of event

  • Lilithcat

Not a fan of mullet dresses in general, but I like this one. Would like it better if the front were a bit longer, though.

Hate the bag. And there is way too much happening at her hands! Multiple rings, multiple bracelets, spikes on the purse – stop it!

  • frannyprof

Hate hate hate the hair. And the shape of the dress is majorly unflattering.

  • Chipster

Out…….All I see is this big sugar skull on her chest.

  • majorbedhead

Well, praise the lord and pass the sweet potatoes! Her shoes fit!

I loathe mullet dresses with the fiery passion blahblahblah. I’m finding it hard to wrap my head around the drama the party-in-the-back of the dress is creating when the business-in-the-front is so shift-like.

  • prettybigkitty

Jennifer Lopez is pissed Kate stole her outfit. It’s downright divalicious!

  • LipstickForPigs

Welp, this is the first mullet dress that hasn’t made my eyes bleed…however the nails look like fungus. Gross.

    • Not applicable

good point, i did miss the fungus nails. blech.

  • Not applicable

that color– including the hair color REALLY suits her. Thought I’d hate this…quelle surprise!

  • YoungSally

Like the color — but without closer inspection (outside of its pedigree) I can hear Tim Gunn say

“Designers – welcome to the Renovation Home Curtain challenge – Feel free to use anything from the Uli glue on accessories wall and the Anya no-sew notions wall – you have three minutes.”

  • That purse reminds me of a hedgehog.

  • Monzerrat Ontiveros

    i love love the makeup!

  • Nancer

The beading on the dress is problematic. It seems to be pulling the dress into an odd shape. But I do love the look overall – imagine the beading gone so that the front wouldn’t pull like that, and this could have been a knockout!

  • Qitkat

The shoes fit! How did that happen?

I do like Kate as a brunette, I didn’t recognize her.
For some reason, I’d like to see Helen Mirren in this. She don’t need no stinkin’ wind machine.

  • Walking proof that a good stylist can make the stupidest dress sing. I love the hair and especially the make-up all in pewter. It makes the look. The bag, the shoes, there are literally no mis-steps. Except the dress looks like my 9 year old daughter took an old gray window sheer and glued on sparkly things she bought at the craft store.

  • Tatiana Luján

I like the overall look, but the placing of the beading is unflattering. She looks as if she had squared and droopy boobs.

  • Miss_Led

It doesn’t do anything for her figure…kinda a saggy bejeweled parachute-that-half-deployed look.

  • maggiemaybe

This look is fantastic–such drama! And that chunky link bracelet is to die for.

  • MilaXX

I really like this dess. I would have gone with a different bag , and I’m not a fan of the bracelet & ring, but I mostly like this.

  • marlie

I like it a lot batter than what she usually wears because it’s not the color of old bras! I’m not fully behind the mullet skirt, and I hate her hair, but overall, I like.

  • Poeta Paz

This is a great formal summer dress. I like that she has bold accessories. I don’t like the no jewelry bland look. It’s kind of weird not to see her blond. If she’s not letting her hair go dark, she needs to go pronto to the hair salon.

  • Miss WKS

Methinks someone has had a little work done…

  • HeatherMcIlrath

I am hunting her down and stealing her shoes.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I don’t like the way the side panels come off the front and drag her boobs down. Love the bag and shoes and her face and hair are beautiful.

  • Lesley

She looks beautiful and i love that she went with that bold lip. I think the whole look is alot darker and dramatic then what she normally gears towards and it’s working, she looks AMAZING.

  • Randy Noak

I’m just such a fan of this color and it never gets worn enough. You’re right about the lips. She should have gone more plummy or basic red.

  • Jibs

All I can see is a weird alien in the boob region. Making them either sad and droopy or perhaps angry. Since I don’t speak alien I can’t be sure.

I like the color on her though…

  • Sarah V.

Honestly, this is a Werq for me. That may be in part because it’s such a refreshing change from what else I’ve seen all recent red carpets, but still. Come on up and get your certificate, Kate honey.

  • girliecue

Beautiful! But I am officially over spiked accessories.

  • JauntyJohn

I think she looks lovely, and while I am generally with you on the mullet hemline overall, the curve on this one rescues it from wtf to interesting and, with those gams, flattering.

  • carpediva

Is bubble gum pink lips a new trendlet? If so it needs to die, and fast.

  • DilettanteDeconstructed

Not a fan of high-low dresses in general, but the color looks great on her with her current hair color. I love her makeup, too; it’s nice to see her looking a bit more grown up. That clutch looks like it would be painful to… well, clutch.

  • amber.

has her hair always looked like that? idontlikeit

this is cute. she looks cute.

  • neonseattle

    i hate the color.

  • Shawn EH

All the bling is fab, dress is a mess!

  • msdamselfly

    Her makeup looks good

  • aquababe

That clutch is killer! No seriously, I think you could kill someone with it.

  • Beverly Kozma

I hate myself for loving those shoes. Those are some shit-kicking shoes; overpriced, impractical, cool-looking shoes.

  • PrunellaV

Andrae did it better with his gutter water gown.

  • kimiakay

Wow, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Kate with hair this dark. It suits her, and suits this dress. I think I like it. Love those shoes and clutch. Don’t usually care for the mullet hem, but this is o.k.

  • ankali

I don’t like this, but I can’t tell if it’s because of the dress (that beading looks… unrefined, maybe? Whatever, the beads look too big, so the whole thing comes off as less intricate than it should) or because she’s on my irrational hate list. That clutch looks like a puffer fish, and I wouldn’t like it in any context. I’ll give her the shoes, though, and grudging approval of her natural hair color.

  • H2olovngrl

Her lip color is from 1988 but I kinda like it. Her hair is what brings the look down, in my opinion. Otherwise, an “in”.

  • unbornfawn

This strikes me as a getup that is difficult to wear. The dress is all over the place and the spikes on the clutch makes it look like it would be a pain to hold onto, and those shoes look too tight. Even so, each element is pretty cool.

  • Synnae

Each item is great but together it is a bit much. I understand the lip stick colour (as it goes great with that grey) but it is just not the colour for her skin tone.

  • librarygrrl64

I love the pewter on her, but you;re right that it should have been limited to the dress.
