Jon Hamm at the 2013 ESPY Awards

Posted on July 19, 2013

On the one hand, he cleans up nicely and we’re happy to see that he doesn’t look like the bloated, rapidly aging mess Don Draper was this past season.

“Mad Men” star Jon Hamm attends the 2013 ESPY Awards at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California.

On the other hand, that tux fits him terribly. Sad.

Just focus on the face kittens. Can’t fuck that part up.

I was going to be all….his hem is horrific, but I couldn’t stop staring at his face… usual…

      • Josie Jones Thames

        YES. His face is FIIIIIIINE.

    • Griffinqueen

Oh, I’m sorry. He was wearing a tux? You were saying…?

    • jen

      What tux??

    • MarieLD

His cell phone is in his pocket. I couldn’t help but notice.

      • Jessica Freeman

Is that your cell phone or are you just happy to see me?

      • Beth513

        Were you doing a hammspection?

        • kolokOlchik

I was. First think I looked for

      • Rand Ortega

For the 1st time in my life I wish I was a cell phone.

      • Tina Power

Google Tom Hiddleston blue suit Cannes 2013. You can practically see the Apple logo on his iphone.

    • StellaZafella

Pardon my stupid question, but since I’ve seen the reference here and elsewhere, before: How is it a Tuxedo when it’s a standard overhand tie? I honestly always thought that it was the bow (or cravat) and waistcoat or cummerbund that distinguished formal wear from “dress suits”.
Kiltd? Uncles? I would be grateful for the education.

      • Lady Orwellian

        Good question.

      • MarieLD

Oh, yes, please someone do tell us what distinguishes a tux from a suit. I’ve been too embarrassed to ask.

        • Gaby

Satin trimmed lapels, usually (and a “tuxedo stripe” in satin on the pants). You can see the very subtle satin trim along the edges of Hamm’s jacket. It’s a subtle thing and you can usually sub in a well-tailored black suit in a pinch, but the satin trim gives it the luxe effect. A tuxedo shirt with studs and cuff-links also helps.

          • Coolekat

            Thanks, Gaby. You’re a smarty!

            • Gaby

I have a menswear fetish after having dated (and broken up with) an unabashed slob. I learned the rules to try to help him, and ended up just enjoying knowing the rules.

            • demidaemon

Well, at least you walked away improved in some way.

      • Vanja

        Wikipedia tells me:
A tuxedo (American English) or dinner suit or dinner jacket (British English) is a formal evening suit distinguished primarily by satin or grosgrain facings on the jacket’s lapels and buttons and a similar stripe along the outseam of the trousers.
So I guess the bow is not mandatory to make it a tuxedo.

        • StellaZafella

And to think, I spent 8 years, 8 performances a week in a dinner jacket or white tie and tails without understanding that distinction…and to also think that, with the addition of a packet of ribbon from the craft store, I wouldn’t (technically) be under-dressed for the symphony in my Brooks Brothers.

          • ankali

Promise you’d apply it with a glue gun!

    • czarina

At least it looks like he is wearing underwear. Who designed that tux and he is wearing a brooch on his lapel?

      • Gaby

        It’s a lapel pin.

    • Diego!

He is carrying a cellphone in his left pocket. The other thing in the right one (?) #SausageFriday I can’t believe how dissapointed I am with this look. It seems as if the jacket was made out of other silk than the pants, doesn’t it? This is ugly, except for Jon, of course! :P

    • marlie

I love his hair like this, when it’s not shellacked back.

      • ankali

Funny, I prefer the Don Draper shellack. I don’t think he’s ever looked as good in real life as he has at his best in the Mad Men drag.

    • KayEmWhy

What’s going on with menswear lately that the proportions of jacket to pants make the men look like booble-heads? I don’t like this “trend”.

      • NoveltyRocker

He and Ryan Gosling actually do have narrow shoulders and bad jackets accentuate that. It isn’t so apparent in movies and TV with framing and good costuming to minimize the bobble potential.

        • KayEmWhy

It appears that I’ve seen this more than once here on TLo. Bad jacket fits all around.

    • NBG

Speaking as a heterosexual woman who used to fit men for tuxes on a daily basis, why in the name of all that is holy would you fit Jon Hamm badly for a tux? This is job that you take your time with, kittens. repeat measurements again and again to be extra sure. If it were me, this would have taken hours, if not days. And he would have looked spectacular. ;)

This is a shame. The hem alone…

      • nannypoo

That measurement down the inseam, over and over and over……..

    • sugarkane105

I’d hate to think that he’s now disinclined to wear proper-fitting pants, since his wiener made headlines everywhere.

    • majorbedhead

Is it me or is the jacket not quite the same shade as the trousers? Or maybe a different material? It looks just a bit off. It also is making him look stumpy.

I’m ashamed to admit, I haven’t really been able to get into Mad Men. I’ve tried, but, eh.

    • another_laura

How can he not get better tailoring than this? HOW??

    • MisScarlett

I can’t see his tux, his eyes are too gorgeous.

    • MilaXX

Boring, ill fitting black suit, does not a heart throb make. Try again Jon.

    • Rand Ortega

Even though he bears a striking resemblance to Mitt Romney, he really does it for me. I looked down at that hem & immediately looked up like I saw his fly unzipped or something equally embarrassing. Nothing perplexes me more than a bad fit at an event that’s been planned to attend for weeks if not months. How do these stylists stay employed?

      • nannypoo

I have never noticed the Mitt Romney resemblance, but now that you mentioned it I can’t unsee it. Shit. Now he’s dead to me.

        • Rand Ortega

Right?!!! It really pained me at first, but now I look at the resemblance like a forbidden, alternate universe sort of thing. Like lusting after evil Spock. LOL!

          • Aurumgirl

Everyone calm down. It was always clear to me that Mitt Romney is the one who is desperate to resemble Jon Hamm. And I like to think Jon Hamm never gives Romney a thought.

            • Rand Ortega

That’s a great way to look at it. I’m positive Hamm never gives Romney a thought. No 1 does.

        • alyce1213

      • LauraAgain

I’ve always thought Mitt Romney is extremely handsome. Have you seen pictures of him as a young man?

And it’s okay to keep the politics out of it ……

        • Aurumgirl

Oh, no question. But imagine how much there is to detract from that beauty! If he’d never opened his mouth, he would have been a hearth throb, for me. But he opened it.

          • LauraAgain

Well, Mitt did open his mouth, and he showed how much more qualified, and how much more ethical and moral he is than the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. And that makes him that much more attractive to me.

    • PeggyOC

Doesn’t even look like the same fabric between the trousers and the jacket. That could be the light.

    • imakeart

With all due respect, he’s another one that I really don’t care what his clothes look like!

    • mommyca

could Janie Bryant still fit his clothes when he is not playing Don Draper? At least for big events :-) I always feel like his shirt collars are too high and he always seems uncomfortable, at least I thought so while watching him at the ESPY…

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Ah, there’s nothing like a little hamm.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Funny thing is, when Mad Men first came out I thought Don Draper was better looking than Jon Hamm. Now, as the seasons have and time have passed I think that Jon Hamm is better looking than Don Draper.

      • Alanna

I’ve always thought that! Could be attitude more than physicality — Don Draper just keeps getting more and more appalling, whereas something about Jon Hamm’s personality (in public) makes him quite endearing and sexy.

    • Shawn EH

      Also the great haircut!

    • Darva Sutra

      Visualizing the Hammaconda helps, too.

    • VicD

What is WRONG with that suit, shirt and tie? URGH.

    • Danielle L

I want to be the person paid to brush his hair from out from in front of his forehead. I come highly recommended.

    • largishbearishAtlish

and he is wearing briefs (or boxerbriefs) and _not_ boxers (or commando :( )

and not to be nit picky, but what is that on his lapel? is it significant? (almost looks like a tie pin) maybe a shout out to the

actor from Glee (Montcrief? Montcliff? am drawing a blank)

      • rajf

I can’t figure it out either. It looks like there’s a wire extending around the edge of the lapel, like a mic.

        • amanda lynn

pretty sure it’s a mic cord.

          • rajf

for the phone that’s in his pocket…or was he just pre-mic’ed for the show? Odd.

            • amanda lynn

very strange. maybe he did some sort of commentary/interview before the carpet? or was he hosting/presenting?

      • meowser

It’s a V Foundation pin – the charity that the ESPYs supports (and was born out of the first ESPYs in 1993).

    • Tara

I didn’t even realize I had stopped scrolling halfway through to stare at his face…until I did. And I blushed.

    • flamingoNW

      Shiny pants NO!

    • Judy_J

He is such a doll, I don’t care that his tux is less than perfect. And if he doesn’t win an Emmy this year, there is no justice in this world. His work this season was phenomenal.

    • Gaby

He finally figured out how to style his hair! Bless. I don’t know when it stopped, but it was always really annoying to see him with his hair falling down into his eyes when I knew it could look this good. But then of course the wind – I bet he secretly had the pap who got that wind-swept picture offed. His hair looks so shiny and sun-highlighted and perfect, I want to run my hands through it and ruin it for him. But I won’t.

    • Lotus Baby

i want to smell his undearwear after a long day

      • Tina Power

Jon Hamm and underwear? This does not compute.

    • Daktari100

The worst part of the tux is the trousers. They’d look better on him if he had gone commando, as we’ve come to expect.

    • Cheryl

This man is a great actor. He’s 10 years (and 30 pounds) lighter than the character he plays. One upside to the months of the year that we don’t have Mad Men is we get to look at Jon Hamm, who is simply yummy when he’s being himself.

    • amanda lynn

He’s one half of one of my favorite celebrity couples.

    • PrunellaV

The suit doesn’t fit, but that’s the best he’s looked on a red carpet in a while. Also the Hammaconda appears to be properly contained.

    • d4divine

I am TLo…I am…noticed that hem and IMMEDIATELY looked up. Lol

    • MK03

It’s really astonishing how much younger they look out of those period costumes and hairdos. He looks so much nicer with his hair a little longer and not plastered down with gunk.

    • Just Me

I would like to,see him and George Clooney in a movie. Plot is completely optional. heck, George, throw in Matt Damon and I will pay extra.

    • Contralto

      He needs me.

    • padma sallah

THE HEM. I was scrolling down the pictures and now that is all I can think of.

    • AmeliaEve

Hi Jon Hamm! Hi! Hi! I just had to come back and look at you some more.

Your suit is ugly, but you are very, very pretty. Hi!

    • Joanne Abrams

You are right, just concentrate on his incredible face!!

    • decormaven

It is so refreshing to see him healthy/happy after watching Don Draper’s physical demise this past season he could have worn a Hefty bag and it would be OK by me.

    • AutumnInNY

      In Websters under dreamboat. Period.

    • sixgables

Yes, it’s a travesty. He should take it off. he makes me sigh like Gidget.

    • RedRaven617

He must have borrowed that tux from his father….

    • likingrob

      pants have terrible fit

    • marshmallowjane

I think that Mad Men short-changes him. He was pretty funny in Bridesmaids. These photos are okay.

    • Adrianna Grężak

I normally don’t see what you mean about fit issues, but in this case I knew this didn’t fit him well before I scrolled down

    • EEKstl

It’s actually ridiculous how handsome he is.

    • sweetlilvoice

He would be served just taking off those pants. In the name of fashion of course…..

    • melanie0866

      Damn, he is handsome.
