Jayma Mays in Rachel Zoe on Jay Leno

Posted on July 26, 2013

Okay, sure; it kinda looks like she’s either going to start a tap routine or strap on a tray and sell cigarettes in a ’40s nightclub, but we pretty much unreservedly love this.

“Glee” star Jayma Mays makes an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in a Rachel Zoe outfit paired with Jean-Michel Cazabet pumps.

She’s a lady who can use a little well-applied glitz every now and then. Honestly, if Lea Michele wore something like this, we’d almost certainly roll our eyes, but that’s because she’s played out this look for herself at this point and besides, she tends to over-vamp when she’s dressing sexy. On Jayma, this kind of look comes off as a pleasant surprise. And she’s hitting the T Lo Points for Sit-Down Interviews:

  1. Visual interest around the face
  2. A decent amount of leg, without the risk of crotch flash or side cheek,
  3. An attention-getting shoe to balance out the look.

Although we have to admit, the shoes look too winter to us. But everything else is too cute and sassy not to love.

I’m just waiting for her to go all Ann Miller in “Kiss Me Kate” on Jay’s desk.

      • Adriana_Paula

God, that would have been awesome.

    • Diego!

I love it, but I don’t know why, the model is wearing some pants Jayma should have stick to. It’s a killer look. This catches attention, yes, but the one the model is wearing is stunning!

      • jen

I agree. The pants with that jacket are amazing. The shorts are kind of meh.

love the outfit, but homegirl needs either some more defined eyebrows or a stronger lip.

    • filmcricket

I’d prefer a redder lip for this, but otherwise she looks adorable.

    • Imasewsure

      Cute retro look

    • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

All she needs is a top hat and she’d be Columbia from Rocky Horror.

      • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

THAT’S what this is reminding me of. THANK YOU.

    • Imasewsure

I’m a fan of bangs for this one…. I’m not a fivehead lover (although she is of course very cute)

    • MilaXX

      No, just no.

      • almondemy

That was my first thought, too! Velvet shoes? VELVET SHOES? IN JULY? IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE?!?!

But, I do like the 40’s concession stand outfit.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

That hair adds two decades to her age.

      • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

        It’s very “Morning News Anchor” isn’t it…?

        • eowyn_of_rohan

It’s giving me flashbacks to Kristen Wiig as “Dooneese” on the Lawrence Welk show sketch on SNL.

    • princessricky

she won me over with the shoes.

I feel like sit-down interviews are the perfect time to deploy the “formal short.” Talk shows occupy that weird nether-region of neither too formal nor too daytime that formal shorts seem to hail from.
ETA: And now I’m imagining someone performing some sort of satanic ritual to summon their formal shorts.

      • demidaemon

The summoning bit is quite apropos to me, in that I consider formal shorts to be fashion’s version of Satan’s love child.

    • gurl boy

      QUICK, catch that runway Rockette!

    • Austen Jane

Agree with the stronger lip color… and maybe getting her thyroid checked? She looks adorable, though.

    • Amy909

She looks cute! I personally prefer the jacket with pants, like in the model picture. I don’t think that celebrities haaave to show their legs during sit-down interviews. Most of the time they just look super uncomfortable.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I think it’s cute on her! She could have done a bit more with the hair and makeup, but this is really an adorable look for her.

    • Glam Dixie

It takes a confident woman to sit down on national television in shorts and not worry that it will show cellulite. Nice legs Jayma, way to show them off. I think she needs a stronger lip color and I like the color of the shoes but not how heavy they look.

    • NoveltyRocker

Gold is so tricky. In photos it can be lit or shopped to look regal and earthy. In reality it can reflect overly saturated and garish. Love how this jacket photographs—on TV, with the brassiness of her current dye job… hm.

    • KikiAvocado

Love the jacket/top. The shorts are a bit too short tho for a sit down – tho the pants the model is wearing woudl have taken it way too wintery. longer shorts? skinny crop pant?

    • formerlyAnon

Like the top half better than the bottom half. I want the shorts to be the fuller, ’30s movie-style tap pants or else a skirt. But can’t argue – it is cute!

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Short-shorts for a sitdown is a genius idea. She looks really relaxed and fun here.

    • alyce1213

The jacket is for Joan Rivers. In general, I dislike dress shorts; these are nothing special but they do fit extremely well (Amy Poehler, take note, sleek and well-fitted) and they’re good for sitting. I just don’t like the look of shorts and high heeled pumps.

    • Sara Brams-Miller

I was thinking the exact same thing. That is pretty much seated-interview-perfection.

    • JauntyJohn

Also, this is a clever bit of personal re-branding. She has a lot more to offer than she’s had the ability to showcase thus far.

    • deltabronze

Maybe I’m just getting old and stuffy, but I don’t understand why women have to show so much skin in non-performance-related public appearances. Guys show up for interviews in normal clothing — why can’t women be seen as interesting and valuable in non-revealing outfits?

    • Shawn EH

She’d be an excellent tap dancer or cigarette girl! She’s a regular Ann Miller!

    • Heather

I’d like to tap dance while selling cigarettes in a 40s nightclub.

Cute outfit. Like her hair color… I’m going for something similar myself.

    • Goldie

I love how these photos catch how animated she was. I don’t watch Jay
anymore, but I saw part of this interview on the internet. She was
telling a story about having a bug living in her ear. It was pretty
cute and she grossed out Ashton Kutcher, lol. As for the outfit, I like it but I don’t like the way her hair is
      styled with it.

    • Pennymac

There must be something wrong with me, since I unabashedly LOVE the stuff that Rachel designs. How can I like it that much when I find her so annoying? Gah! I’m conflicted!

Miss Jayma is totally carrying this cheeky look off!

    • Warrior89

Not only do I hate it (and the shoes), she reminds me so hard of a tarsier that I can’t even focus on the ADHD that is her outfit.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

well, no wonder she had a bug in her ear.

    • DamH

Only if she had not work that fab jacket with a black shorts. That is so “Of Course”.

    • semirose

She looks super cute, love the jacket and can get behind the shorts but omg that bug in the ear story? I had basically the name no no noooo reaction kutcher had.

      • demidaemon

Yeah, I saw that bit on another show. As a person who has had many ear problems (no bugs thank god), that was particularly squicky and made me squirm and cringe.

    • BrooklynBomber

Wow, that’s practically the jacket I wore for my first wedding, in 1986.

It’s good to see that Marilu Henner’s stylist is still getting work.
