IN or OUT: Diane Kruger in Jonathan Saunders at “The Bridge” Premiere

Posted on July 09, 2013

Kittens, something rare has occurred. Brace yourselves.

We don’t know what to think of this:

Diane Kruger attends the series premiere of FX’s “The Bridge” in Los Angeles, California in a Jonathan Saunders dress paired with a Charlotte Olympia clutch and Givenchy sandals.

Jonathan Saunders Resort 2014 Collection

Charlotte Olympia Pandora Cancer Zodiac Clutch

Yes, it’s true. Try not to panic. T & Lo find themselves bereft of opinions. Weep, kittens. And hold each other before the end comes.

Okay, maybe we’re being a touch melodramatic. We actually do have opinions, but they don’t add up to an assessment. We’ll spew, and then y’all can pick up the slack and make the final call yourselves. In no particulare order, we like: the color, the ombre effect, the clutch (which is super-cute), and the hair & makeup, which is summertime-fresh. We are ambivalent to negative about: the flimsiness of this dress, which gives it the whiff of poolside, the heaviness of those shoes (a more delicate sandal for a sheer skirt, please), the fact that the block of black in the center of the dress is too large, from a proportional perspective and isn’t quite flattering, and finally, the dicey seams and pulling going on around her bust.

But it is a high-impact, head-turning kind of look; we’ll give it that. If nothing else, the color is spectacular on her. But this time, kittens make the call:

Vote Now!

IN! Colorful, striking, and chic!

OUT! Flimsy, cheap, and messy!

She’s been waiting a long time for the ruling, so Jessica Chastain will probably be more relieved than upset that y’all voted her Big Serious Dress OUT.

    • OneRing

Out. The black is too black. Don’t like the white at the bottom. Doesn’t fit well.

      • DuBey2

        Out. What she said.

    • Stacy C

IN. I seriously love the dress. Could do without the shoes. The makeup is gorgeous!

      • gabbilevy

Agree! She should have completed the mermaid princess effect and just gone barefoot! (In!)

    • Lily

IN, absolutely. Greens look amazing on her, she should wear them more often.
I want that dress when it trickles down to my price range.

    • Little_Olive

The black is indeed too black, and somehow making her look bulky (and it’s the black part!). But what gets me most is the shoes. How could someone be so wrong?

      • Emily

Agree. Makes it an OUT for me.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I like it – although I really don’t like the clutch, and I suspect if I were talking to her I’d spend all night staring at her chest to see if breathing makes the waves move. IN

    • HomeOfficeGirl

It’s an IN for me. I have a hard time with some of the complicated looks she sometimes wears because in general her face and hair never seem to match the drama of the outfit. So, in this case, the softer, more casual dress is really working. Hair and face look beautiful. I don’t like the accessories – agree about the shoes, and actually I hate that clutch. I’m not ready for peach apparently – I winced at that.

    • Jessica Freeman

OUT. I think it also needs a belt. The print trying to go ombre is just too far. My hatred for white shoes still stands.

      • Sagecreek

No kidding. Whoever is responsible for reintroducing white shoes is in big trouble in my book.

        • MoHub

I have no issue with white sandals; just not these with that dress. And they don’t look as if they fit her right.

    • IngerMereteH

Actually, that is quite a deft way to employ a sheer skirt, and perhaps the first time I’ve liked that otherwise most annoying of fashion whims. Love the colour combo too, at least on the model, but in that light the fabric looks cheap and shrill, and the poor fit nudges the whole look into the OUT area for me. The model is an IN. But I do adore the little crab.

      • Slanted & Enchanted

Yeah, it looks heaps more expensive and edgy on the model.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I like the idea of the dress, but its execution leaves a lot to desire. That chiffon has been inexpertly handled. Far to much puckering along seam lines and hems. Unacceptable for such a high end frock. I do however love the color of Diane.

I have to go with out, though.

      • AmeliaEve

The fabric looks really cheap. yuck. OUT.

      • omg_dora

The fabric, the bright green, the fit of the bodice and the seam finishes combine to make the dress look quite cheap.

      • gracedarling

It also seems to be just an inch too low at the waist. Look at the way the back is blousing out… someone’s tried to hoik it up at the front.

    • Cameron Turner

      In!

    • Call me Bee

I saw the same dress (sorta) on a pudgy gal walking to Summerfest last week. If a dress is worn to a local beer/music festival in flyover country, it is unequivocally OUT. I do like the shoes, though…

    • Ronica Skarphol Brownson

In, with tweaks. More delicate shoe in black or silver, some tiny bit of sparkle or shine at the ear, but otherwise she looks great. Flimsy, schmimsy. It’s an outfit she’ll wear once. Whatever.

    • jerseyginger

Blue and green is probably my favorite color combo but this just looks cheap.

    • appliquer

Out – A rare miss by one of my favorites.

      • Rhonda Shore

Out, it’s just an ugly and cheap-looking dress.

    • E. D.

Out. Hate the white at the bottom and don’t like the shoes.

    • Tatiana Luján

IN. I love that she looks like a mermaid.

    • Eva_baby

Oh…I am torn. I want to like it. Something about it makes me like it. And yet something about it stops me from really liking it. Is is the white? Is it how flat the black is? i don’t know. But I like her and it doesn’t look too awful so I am going to say IN.

    • mjude

OUT. something is off, like the fit?

    • nannypoo

      It’s cheap-looking and unflattering.

    • veleri

OUT – she is better than this!

Sorry Diane, you got us used to another level. Your fault! You made us demanding and picky.

    • MoHub

I’d always been told that black—especially when deployed around the midsection—is slimming. However, this makes her look thick in the middle. Is it the exception that proves the rule?

    • decormaven

In for the dress, but out on the shoe choice. The green color is amazing on her, and that clutch is very eye-catching.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

I like the heaviness of the black for this event as it seems thematically appropriate for her new show.

    • Catiline

IN, though I don’t care for the white at the bottom. I love those colors and the hair/makeup.

    • Lizzyisi

Ugly dress, cheap looking seams, unflattering fit: OUT.

    • Viviennne

Out. The dress looks cheap ….

    • CT14

I like the dress from the front–IN. When she turns 3/4, she looks enormous, somehow–OUT. Next pic? IN. Scroll back up to enormous picture–OUT? Maybe?

I think I give it an IN overall, but caution her to watch her angles. I like the green color on her quite a bit. Wearing color should be rewarded. IN.

But a strangely difficult dress to form an opinion around.

    • Jangle57

      IN

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

IN – Summer lovin’. And can I say, I am so happy she has a job so that there will be other things for her to do besides Pacey and red carpet appearances.

    • Nimith

In. If you ignore the tit-shelf.

    • GorgeousThings

OUT. The puckery seams alone make it an out. Add in the fact that, in the 3/4 shot the dress makes her look wide, it’s a double whammy.

      Love the clutch.

    • filmcricket

Hmm. A lower-case out? The colour’s great on her, and I agree with the BK above who said her hair and face are often too casual for the outfits she wears, so this works with her tonsorial style. I also agree w/ TLo, though, that the fabric looks cheap, and I think she’s just too short to pull off this particular ombre; the black doesn’t look as disproportionate on the taller model.

    • carnush

IN. She can do no wrong in my book. Love the color, and I think the shoes are great.

    • YourLibrarian

I like the dress in theory (it’s interesting and done in beautiful colors), but it’s unflattering and poorly accessorized. I hate to do it, but I have to give this an OUT.

    • Caitlin O’Brien

      OUT

    • Sagecreek

Very in, I love this dress (although the unks are right about the black). Hate the new trend for white sandals.

    • Judy_S

In, but with doubts. I don’t actually like the clutch–the color is too close to her skin tone.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

I adore the color and the ombre effect. I think the dress needs a belt, though. And the length needs adjusting, it’s dragging on the ground. I think her hair looks meh and a pair of earrings would do wonders for the above-the-neck look.

Damn, I started as an “IN” for that wonderful color, but the sum total is “OUT.”

    • Lilithcat

      Out.

The fabric is just cheesy-looking. And I loathe the shoes.

The clutch, on the other hand, belongs to me. (Yep, that’s my sign!)

      • kaysarasara

You’ll have to arm wrassle me for it.

    • Introspective

shoes are too white. the black patch is jarring. the clutch has tiny green jewels which dont do enough to connect it to the dress, because the main color of the purse is a non sequitur for this outfit.

in short, there are good elements and a clear effort here, but the overall effect is out with a small o.

    • http://michjeff-quiltersparadise.blogspot.com/ Michelle Young

In! I like this dress but wonder why the color is so less dramatic in this picture than on the models.

    • SugarSnap108

Out. I’m biased, because I made a dress like this in college — took white chiffon and dipped it in a bucket of dye for the ombre effect — so this has a homemade feel to me. Plus, the cut is just not flattering, and the shoes are completely wrong. Her face does look lovely, though.

    • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com heartbot

I love everything about it, except her in it. I don’t think she looks good in the green color at all.

    • RebeccaKW

In. I think she looks great. I don’t like the shoes, share your issues with the bust, but really, overall, it’s a head-turning look.

    • ashtangajunkie

I very much want to like this, but the fit and the horrible shoes prevent it. Love that clutch though.

    • hmariec19

IN. But I’m also a sucker for Diane Kruger and green.

    • sarah

Out. Hate the bottom, the shoes, and the middle.

    • Snailstsichr

OUT. I just don’t like any of it. I might like the clutch with something else.

    • pookiesmom

      IN. I absolutely love this.

    • formerlyAnon

Out. No question. It looks like something a good home sewer -who’s not got design skills – would dream up, based on a vision they had in their head (where do you think I came up with this scenario, hmmm?). It’s overly complicated and the appeal rides too much on the color.

    • kittenwithaquip

OUT. I find the dress unflattering, I HATE white shoes, and I think Ms. Kruger is working her way onto my Irrational Hate List. My age must be showing, because all white nails, even bright white tips on French manicures, remind me of White Out. In junior high we would get bored in class and paint our nails with it. I’m thinking that an annoying adolescent pastime is not a trend that an adult should get behind.

    • Ashley Ellen Wilson

OUT. I don’t like the ombre.

    • barbarienne

The first thing I noticed was the pulling in the bust, the bad proportion of the black, and the flimsy feel of the fabric (say that five times fast). Since the “bad” was more noticeable to me than the “good,” I have to say OUT.

      Love the clutch, though.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

IN. I love this look. There are some problems with the execution, but wow, what a striking look.

    • rissa42210

I am going to give it a tepid in. On initial impact, the dress is awesome, but I agree that it’s not fitting right and the proportions are not quite on point. I like the shoes, and I love the bag. I’m not bowled over by her makeup. The lip is a little too nude. Also, I’m not sure that green around her shoulders is doing her any favors. Essentially, there are a lot of issues with the look upon close inspection, but the initial impact is pure summer BAM!

    • ballerinawithagun

OUT! Hate the white on the bottom. Hate the white sandals. Hate the white stitching. Hate the white fingernails.

    • MandyM

I love the effect but I think the color contrast is too much. If it were gray instead of black or a more gradual transition from the green to the stark black, it might have been better. Still it is not bad enough to be an out. It IS cool and she looks great so I give it a soft in.

    • another_laura

Out, but nice try. The stark black and white hues are what’s bugging me most, I think. And too much black.

    • lrober03

In. I love the dress up to the waist (enough to compensate for the disappointment when I saw the skirt), and I think the clutch is great.

    • crash1212

OUT. Hate the shoes, hate the giant blob of black in the middle and I think it makes her look thicker than we know she is. Love the head and the clutch.

    • frannyprof

      Out. Swamp Thing.

    • majorbedhead

The wave-y things don’t line up in the bust, which is making me twitch and the contrast between the black and the green is too harsh – from afar, it makes her look pixelated. There’s too much black, the shoes are horrible, and the skirt is limp.

Cute head and clutch, but it’s not enough to save it.

      OUT.

    • tereliz

In. I’m not wild about the flimsiness of the skirt, but I also think it’s too long and if properly hemmed would fall more evenly. It is really pretty and summery, which is a nice change. WANT that bag. I love mixing that peachy color of the adorable Cancer clutch with green. Adore the sandals but they read too casual and weighty for this dress.

    • Janet B

      OUT
I don’t think this is flattering her at all. She looks older/more mature than she did a few months ago and I’m sure that wasn’t the goal.

Hate the fit in the bodice, is she really so busty?
The green and black together aren’t working, maybe I just don’t like the black.

    • Annarosa

I don’t like green, but it is definitely a yes for me. Love the clutch.

    • prettybigkitty

      In. She looks lovely.

    • j_anson

Huh, at first I thought this dress had no major problems, but when you detailed them, I was like, yup… yup… yup…

I think it’s still an IN for me, though. I like the overall effect enough. But I think that black would be better if it faded in more gradually, maybe?

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

It’s an OUT for me. This whole ensemble comes off looking cheap, which it undoubtedly is not. Can I have one if those clutches in a Leo, please?

    • Leigh David

The white thread of the bodice just looks like basting instead of a design element. But what totally ruins it for me is the fit. Even as a petite woman, Diane has proportionally square shoulders. The design of the arm holes aren’t accommodating her and are too tight – creating puckering across the bust. Personally, if I’d tried on something so ill fitting I would have nixed it just on comfort problems. OUT

    • Alyssa

In. Mostly because that clutch is to die for!

    • Shawn EH

It’s the sort of dress that needs its own wind machine (and Richard Avedon to photograph it). It’s not meant to just poledance. However, it’s lovely, IN!

    • l v

Can I give it an enthusiastic IN from the waist up, plus the clutch? The color is beautiful on her and the hair and makeup look great. I’m just going to pretend the rest of it does not exist.

    • lesmaha

      Out. Cheap-looking.

    • Qitkat

In! The only quibble I have is I’m in agreement with y’all about the amount of black through the mid-section, but it looks better on Diane than the model, who is apparently going to her own funeral. A super dark green would have been a better color choice. Love the ombre and the clutch. Her hair looks best in the final shot where that escaping wispy curl has been put back behind her shoulder. I rarely rely on shoes to decide ins or outs. /shrug/

    • lobsterlen

OUT. The clutch almost pulls it towards an in. The crab clutch almost allow me to forgive the cheapness of this dress and those white shoes … almost. Love that crabbie clutch.

    • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

The watery effect and fade into black make me feel like I’m drowning in a very deep pond.

      • Shawn EH

        Named Diane. Pacey feels you!

    • Nancer

In. There are some issues, but overall it’s a nice look. Love the clutch, though it doesn’t seem to work with this dress. Like the choice of white shoes, though these seem heavy for the dress. The material is flimsy, but very pretty.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

OUT. So close. If the dress ended at the knee, I would have said IN. That would have kept it from looking so cheap.

    • Jessica Goldstein

IN. I love all but the shoes, but I love the rest so much I don’t much care about the shoes.

    • Lori

The dress seems like an interesting idea, but rather poor execution. Because it’s Diane Kruger, it’s working better than it has a right to, so I guess it’s a marginal In. I hate the purse though. If you take off the crab it’s a piece of tile from a particularly out-dated bathroom.

    • Garcia Loca

Like the dress, j’adore the clutch, the ankle brace/ACE bandage shoes have to go. On the balance, IN

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

      OUT. She looks rumpled. No.

    • MilaXX

I like it in principal, but everything is a little off. The fit of the dress, the heavy shoe & the contrast of the peach bag against the black middle section of the dress. Small OUT for me

    • Victor Beiramar Diniz

new fashion rule: you don’t have to (and rather shouldn’t) exactly match your purse with your skin tone…

    • Slanted & Enchanted

OUT. Weird fit, hate the hem, loathe the bust. I miss Kruger’s couture crop tops. I am sorely disappointed.

    • http://www.argonauticos.blogspot.com/ jason

      I like it!
The shoes and the hair, however…..

    • Candigirl1968

I’d like it better if it were just above the knee.
The shoes seem tacked on. Have we seen anyone working a white shoe this summer that actually, well, worked?
Out because it doesn’t quite come together.

    • Izzie D

IN! Makeup looks beautiful, colour is fabulous on her. And she actually looks like she’s dressed for summer which is a rarity on the RC at the moment!

    • VioletFem

OUT. The ombre look on this dress just does not seem to quite work and fit near the bust looks off. Plus, the shoes and bag are totally wrong for this look.

    • Sara__B

Not awful, but still OUT. The fit and proportions are wrong.

    • MilaXX

I wish she was wearing Minnie Driver’s dress instead

    • conniemd

In, cuz I love the green colors. Agree the black is too much proportionally, and I also don’t like the neck, would have preferred something lower, like a scoop or a single tie around the neck. The high neck makes it look cheaper and less elegant.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

It’s an IN, but because this look could have been a disaster for any other celebrity, but Diane is working it like the pro she is.

    • CeeQ

I’m giving this an IN. The black center is distracting but as I zoom out, it all works quite well, surprisingly. The clutch is super cute and being a Cancerian (is that a word?) myself, I am LOVE.
I think the shoes could be more delicate but still – overall an IN.

    • BrooklynBomber

Well, I know what I think of it: it’s ugly.

    • TheAmericaness

Mmm. I can’t say. I think I’d have to see her in person.

    • Julie Chase

In, but I wish it was shorter.

    • marlie

OUT. Love the color, but the dress looks cheaply made, and makes her look bigger and boxier than she really is.

    • aplomb

Not perfect, but defINitely IN. She’s glowing.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I thought it was dark blue when I first looked at it (rather than black) so I was all ready to read about how its mix of green and blue represented conflict. I know the MAD MEN rules too well. It kind of still does, though, doesn’t it? This dress is in conflict with itself!

I think I would like it better if it were an above-the-knee length that stopped after the black faded away. It’s the second green part and especially the white that look like cheap curtains to me. And, of course, I hate the shoes. I always hate the shoes.

So I vote her OUT by a nose. Or a shoe. Or a second green panel.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

IN…love the green color on her. Yes there are issues, but overall she looks fab.

    • Samantha

Not perfect by any means, but I kinda covet the dress so IN.

    • plinkiedoodle

Totally in. She finally looks great in her own right, not her usual desperate attention-seeking (ala Lea Michelle) look.

    • carolie_king

I don’t like the minty shade (which is lime green on the model) and I REALLY have an eye twitch with the panels where the waves don’t match up. Did they add those because she’s less of a twig than the model and not pay attention, or is it intentional? Almost, but OUT.

      • Gwyndall

Those are actually pleats, and appear to be in the original as well. Still, they COULD have made the waves line up…

    • Maya

in. the shoes are out, but it’s a quibble.

    • MzzPants

I suspect the color didn’t photograph well on the step-and-repeat. Otherwise, she gets points for wearing something unusual and pulling it off. Not a werq, but certainly an IN.

    • cowper

      OUT. Costume for jellyfish musical.

    • LaSylphide

Out. Those shoes would be enough for an ‘out’, but nothing is quite right, especially the hair/makeup. Dress is kind of dowdy.

    • kim bunchalastnames

IN. she can make almost anything look great.

    • Andrea Lentz

IN it’s stunning and the way the colors flow i just want to keep looking at it.

    • AnniNoone

I think the good factors outweigh the bad. IN.

    • poggi

The black in the middle seems to be making her into a rectangle. I think you need to be model tall to pull this off.

      Out.

    • DCSheehan

In. It’s like a black hole erupted from her belly button. But a pretty black hole.

    • JauntyJohn

IN — but by a hair. The clutch tipped it for me. That and the fact that this is a non-stuffy and interesting choice without drifting into whack-a-doodle, as so many interesting choices can.

    • stagmania

IN, mostly because she is really pulling off that bright green.

    • DilettanteDeconstructed

Can I just vote for the clutch? I adore that. (Especially since that’s my astrology sign!) I can take or leave the rest, but that clutch is wonderous.

    • KayEmWhy

Nice in theory, but the execution is all off, and I agree the shoes are all wrong.

    • neonseattle

i love it. she’s my sartorial queen.

    • ringthing

Out. Looks like a cheap Halloween costume.

    • alyce1213

IN. Love it — summery, flowy. Handkerchief silk is lovely to wear when it’s hot.

    • msdamselfly

OUT I like the dress on the model but it is very unflattering to Ms. Krugers figure

    • Monapily

That makeup is atrocious. For me, that “nude” colored lip gloss is the equivalent of silly putty shoes. It does no one of no skin tone any favors. To paraphrase Hillary from Beaches, it makes them look like corpses. Avemariapurisima, I hate it so much.

The dress is super cute tho. Love Diane Kruger. Can’t wait for The Bridge!

      Oh yeah: IN!

    • pugluv

OUT…I love the colors but hate the dress. I love the clutch and her hair and makeup. She is so lovely.

    • bellafigura1

Out. I don’t think the seaming works with the shape of this dress and the color blocking, ombre thing, plus the slit. Waay too much going on.

    • housefulofboys

Out. I don’t like the color with her skin color (or her makeup color? which looks too waxy for summertime). I don’t like the sandals. And, the first thing I noticed was how awkward the fit was around her bust. Sorry, Diane, but it’s a fail this time.

    • CheriCPat

Out, for the unflattering black hole in the middle. And the shoes.

    • PrunellaV

      Gorgeous. IN.

    • trisker

Out – for all the reasons you stated!

    • twigg

I wish there was only one ombre effect– by the bust or down the legs. Doing both is unflattering and ruins the effect.

    • EEKstl

IN, it’s quite stunning, but I don’t feel the white at the hem is the right choice and the blue is too dark, but overall it is arresting.

    • demidaemon

Shoes are a definite no. The length and the sheer at the bottom are not working for me–it needed to be shorter. The bodice needed to be more fitted. It looks very loosey goosey up top. About the only things working for me are the color and her head. So, OUT, sadly.

    • solidcurrency

I’m not a fan of the shoes but I love the dress and super cute clutch. IN.

    • Louise Bryan

IN Beautiful color and white sandals…breath of summer

    • Susan Velazquez

Girl, this is not your dress. Ship this off to someone more waifish. OUT

    • altalinda

      Out. Looks like shower curtains.

    • Wendi126

      Out. Just out

Out. The dress is proportionally wrong for her. Where the ombre begins and ends are in the wrong places. But her makeup, I’ve never seen it match a clutch before. (But I do like that clutch :)) The shoes are too heavy for the filmy dress, and she needs earrings and a belt. I know it’s summer, but Diane has a habit of letting her hair go just any ‘ol where, and I think she needs to change that, starting here.

IN. It’s pretty! Agree about the shoes, but really, she looks cool and stylish.

Out. The black section just isn’t flattering, I don’t like the shoes, and I don’t care for the makeup. Our girl Diane can do better.

In. Strappy gold sandals and no white-out Pinterest nails.

    • Jennifer Bober

The cut of that armscye is doing nasty things to the bustline and those shoes are so out! The black is too heavy in it as well.

Out…but find another emerald green dress girl!

    • silly little thumb

I’m not a fan of this new ankle monitor shoes trend, but I do love the dress. So IN.

      Kruger used OMBRE DRESS.

      OMBRE DRESS is successful!

      Kruger WINS!

OUT, there is something flimsy and heavy about the dress. Hate the white at the bottom.

Out. That huge black swath in the middle is awful.

IN. The initial impact was enough to make up for your quibbles, with which I agree.

Out. Bulky yet flimsy at the same time. And yes, totally wrong shoes.

    • Synnae

I agree with the black swath being just too big, other than that it is a gorgeous silk dress. I like the shoes though, and the clutch, and the make-up/hair. And (as usual with DK) it is at least interesting so an IN.

    • Reality TV Casting

IN she looks gorgeously beach chic, brlliant choice of clutch, but wish she wasnt covering up the emblem

    • altissima

IN. I agree the black area could be reduced, but overall this is a gorgeous easy-breezy summery look.

Out. Nothing more to be said.
