Helen Mirren in Tory Burch at the “Red 2” Premiere

Posted on July 17, 2013

After last week’s stripper-heeled bomb-drop of a dress, we don’t blame Queen Helen for pulling back a little on the style front. She knows what all true royalty know: One must dole out One’s fabulosity, lest the peasants be blinded and overwhelmed by it and wind up forgetting to plow the fields and pay their taxes, drinking and fornicating in the streets and public houses, to the ruin of all.

Helen Mirren attends the premiere of “Red 2” at MOMA in New York City in a Tory Burch dress paired with a Kate Spade cardigan, a Herve Van der Straeten bracelet, and a CB Luxe ring.

Tory Burch Pre-Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Lina Zhang

We think skipping the blouse and adding a cardi was a great choice, but we’re not loving the way the white of the sweater fights with the off-white of the dress. We’re loath to admit this, since we’ve been bitching about it all spring and summer, but black-and-white is very trendy at the moment and a black cardigan might have worked better here, bringing it to a more formal, night-time level.

Not that we really have an issue with this look. We’ll take it as-is. We love the dress and the shoes. We’re thrilled she’s wearing sheer hose and hope she stays away from the opaque tights she favors when wearing above-the-ankle skirts. And the jewelry’s awesome, even if it is fighting a bit.

I think she looks amazing. Agree about the cardi, but that’s a minor quibble. And I want her jewelry!

    • drdarke

I don’t love the length of the dress – it makes her legs look stumpy…which they clearly are not.

Agreed the cardigan should be another color – any color, though picking up on the gold and brown tones in the dress might be smart….

      • ampg

I think red would have worked well, and tied in nicely with the event.

  • I love the jewelry, since it picks up on the tiny gold beads in the embellishment of the dress

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Agreed. I love the big bangles!

  • Judy_S

She looks great, though I wish the neckline lay flat.
I just watcher her on the Daily Show. I loved that she portrayed herself as a child of immigrants, though Oliver missed his cue and took it in the direction of “British actors in the U.S.”

    • Rand Ortega

That pink frock she was rockin’ thrilled me no end.

Funny you should mention her immigrant parents (though on her Wiki page her mom is listed as English, her father a Russian immigrant). Years ago she played a Russian cosmonaut in the sequel to “2001: A Space Odyssey” & I always marveled at her perfect accent. Now I realize how she came by it .

      • drdarke

She also played Baryshnikov’s Russian Dancer ex in WHITE NIGHTS, @randortega:disqus – now and then she goes home to Mother Russia, though I think we all consider her The True Queen of England and Empress of the British Empire now.

Maybe Russia can become part of the British Empire, just so she can rule over both…?

        • ballerinawithagun

Wow, White nights, haven’t thought of that movie for a long time…Now I’ll have to watch it again. Baryshnikov didn’t age quite as well Queen Helen, but then that is a difficult goal to accomplish.

        • NOLA_gal

She used to have a pied-a-terre down here in NOLA so we could claim her for awhile, but alas she sold up. We miss her.

    • I also loved how she looked in a cute navy and white outfit with Kelly and Michael yesterday morning. This dame knows what looks good on her.

  • Glam Dixie

I think she looks great, love the dress and shoes, but my initial thought when I saw the cardigan was, Damn you Michelle Obama! But truth be told, the blouse would have been worse and she doesn’t like to go sleeveless, so it works although I agree black would have kicked it up.

  • Heather

I love how she always seems to have red nails – very regal!

I saw her on Martha Stewart once, and she was showing Martha how to pot something – zinnias maybe? – and she had this awesome, bright-red, kind of hookerish manicure. LOVED the two of them together. I’d really like to see them break it down and have a real conversation, like Joan Rivers’ bed interviews.

  • MoHub

I think a black cardi would provide too harsh a contrast and actually distract from the dress. I’m thinking something in a taupe color would complement the dress and shoes better.

  • Snailstsichr

that dress + her figure = very understated VaVaVoom!

  • alyce1213

She looks so much better in the dress than the 20-year-old model. She really knows what shapes flatter her.

    • kimmeister

The poor model was subjected to wearing oatmeal colored tights. Ick.

  • TLJezebel

LOVE the dress, but that cardigan is bad news. Also love the shoes, although I would
rather have seen a POC. Minor stuff. I would be honored to plow her fields.

    • VeryClaire

As much as I love a cardigan, it’s too informal for this look (which is otherwise lovely).

  • maggiemaybe

She looks lovely as usual, and those are delicious little shoes.

  • Tatiana Luján

Any other color would have been better that that white cardigan. A soft gold, for example.

  • floretbroccoli

Did you see Dame Helen on The Daily Show (with John Oliver) last night? She talked about meeting famous people and recommended touching their clothes because the fabric is always astonishingly luxurious.

  • Quite lovely, even though it’s not really reading Movie Premiere.

  • majorbedhead

I agree about the cardigan, but man, that dress is awesome on her and those shoes kick ass. I used to have a pair like that, from the Speigel catalog. (Is that even still around?)

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Maybe even a brown cardigan with metallic gold threads?

  • I’m gonna say it – metallic cardigan – or even better, metallic blazer. Yes yes, I know they’re a cliche for maturer women, but I think she could have rocked a bronze jacket rather than go black-white (which to me would just say summer office look) and amped up the drama. That’s my take.

    • ccinnc

Good call. A bronze metallic (cardigan for its softness) would’ve been perfect.

  • Lizzyisi

    What a beautiful dress.

She looks great, but I’m distracted by trying to figure out why an action adventure movie is premiering at MOMA.

  • e jerry powell

The pink number from Daily Show last night was so fun!

  • SugarSnap108

I don’t love the neckline, but agree that going with the cardigan was a much better choice than wearing it as a jumper. I’m with everyone calling for Metallic-Enhanced Cardigan. But those are quibbles. She’s fabulous.

  • another_laura

White cardi a clear error but I’ll call it a quibble. Queen Helen, indeed.

  • Joyce VG

I love the dress! She looks like a proper lady! LOL. Dame Helen Mirren is gorgeous.

  • Stella Zawistowski

Not a comment on how it looks, but my god, the idea of wearing hose, even sheer ones, in NYC right now…god bless her.

  • Rand Ortega

A light dove grey or camel cardi would have killed it. But she’s gorgeous nonetheless. She was on the Daily Show last night & she looked so luminous in a fuchsia dress & her hair in a kicky bob, I couldn’t watch sitting down. I just paced back and forth in delight watching her.

  • MilaXX

I like the whole look & would have disliked a black sweater. If anything perhaps a tan one keeping the look more tonal. BTW, I attended a screening of this movie. If you like action movies I highly recommend this. The cast is great. Dame Hrlen manages to be sexier than Mary Loise & Catherine Zeta combined. If you like sexy backs , Byun has a brief nude scene well worth the price of admission.

    • Rand Ortega

Love the 1st 1. Definitely seeing this. The future Mr. Ortega, Karl Urban, will be missed as he isn’t in the sequel. I loved Agent Cooper. My consolation is his new series, “Almost Human” w/ the very delicious Michael Ealy. Just screened the pilot & it’s very interesting.

      • MilaXX

Looking forward to Almost Human and the yummy Michael Ealy

        • Rand Ortega

Urban & Ealy: Best beefcake sammich on TV!

  • sagecreek

The model interpretation was just bizarre, who puts an oxford shirt under a dress like that?

  • chowwander

Nope, I disagree this time, she’s perfect as is. Outfit is a porcelain WERQ.

  • marlie

I really like this. The dressed could have been hemmed just an inch or two, and I agree with TLo that a black (or maybe a bronze-ish) cardigan would have worked better than the white cardi. And the hose are making me hot just thinking about them.

  • neonseattle

  • julnyes

a metallic cardi and a slightly shorter hem and this would have been a WERQ in my (imaginary) book.

  • Anniebet

Damn, I think I forgot to plow my field, I’m so blinded by the fabulosity! Seriously, this woman gives me a great deal of happiness because every time I see a sweet, grey-haired, elderly lady with a bubble hairdo (they’re legion in the US), I can think of Queen Helen and know that if I try very very hard I don’t have to be one of the them when I reach elderly status.

  • susan6

Great dress, but I’m not totally on board with the cardigan. That pink number she wore on the Daily Show last night, however….BAM!!! Bowing down.

  • formerlyAnon

Now, that is Ladylike with a capital L. (Agree that a black cardigan would have been better than a not-matching white.)

  • conniemd

I was so glad she didn’t wear that dress as a jumper with that hiddy blouse. I think last time I wore a jumper was grade school in the 60’s. I agree that a black or even brown or beige toned cardigan would have looked better. It’s easy to forget that there are many different shades of white and black and they look funny when the top and bottom are just off a bit in shade.

  • Anne At Large

My heart wants to see this with a nice lightweight bronze jacket. Too much? I think not. And I love the shoes!

  • decormaven

Yes, the whites are fighting a bit, but she looks lovely. Bonus points for the fab jewelry and shoes.

  • Lola Channing

love everything. White cardi good choice because it’s summer. Black would have made it too heavy.

  • Just glad she put a cardi on that covers up the neckline. It looks too much like an apron on the model.

  • ailujailuj

Just not the same w/out the hookerplatforms.

  • demidaemon

All I can say is this: her tits look awesome!

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Dead on as usual, gay nephews…a good black cardi would have made this a ‘WERQ’. Doesn’t matter, Queen Helen looks fantastic and I covet those shoes.

  • berkeleygirl

I can live with the slightly off whites. Pretty damn close perfection from the lip color, nail enamel and shoes…

  • Cynica

Those shoes with the dress are genius.

  • MannahattaMamma

please god(s) let me have just a tiny drop of La Mirren’s fabulosity before I die. Please? Like the itsiest bit of sweat from her so-perfect & surgicially untouched nose?

  • ChaquitaPhilly

She looks wonderful and did you see her on The Daily Show? WOW!

  • It’s unusual for me to dislike HM’s choices, but there isn’t much that I like here at all except for her makeup and hair. Usually, women of a certain age are told not to wear dark lipstick, but I think she looks fabulous.

The sweater and dress look awful together. Not only the colors, but the way the cardigan fits around the breast area, it just looks awkward. I’d like to see a dressier watch. The bangles don’t look right at all.
