Hayley Atwell in Roksanda Ilincic at the Fashion Rules Exhibition

Posted on July 08, 2013

We appear to have entered the English Celebrity portion of our post-July 4th holiday return to bitchery. It makes sense, really. None of the American stars did anything worth a damn over the holiday. Besides, there’s something poetic about bitchy American fashion bloggers celebrating our independence by criticizing English celebrities for how they’re dressed. It’s our own little form of patriotism, darlings.

Still, we find ourselves somewhat unexpectedly loving this dress.

Hayley Atwell attends the “Fashion Rules: Dresses from the Collections of the Queen, Princess Margaret and Princess Diana” Exhibition Launch Party in a Roksanda Ilincic dress paired with Christian Louboutin pumps.

Roksanda Ilincic Spring 2013 Collection

It’s not really the kind of dress you’d think of for a red carpet, but this is fairly atypical as celebrity public appearances go. Besides, it calls for a little decorum. She feels a bit too covered up for July, but we do love the pops of color in the collar and cuffs. We kind of hate the white pumps paired with this. We realize they’re something of a trend right now, but they really bring this look down, to our eyes. We’re also not super-crazy about the top knot. Then again, she’s so covered up she probably needed to get her hair the hell off her face and neck.

But we reiterate: great dress. It just feels more fall than spring or summer to us.

  • I’m not crazy about the topknot, and she is swimming in those pumps. Otherwise, I Love it!

    • If you were wearing a high collar and long sleeves in July, you’d probably want to go swimming, too. ;o)

  • Clueless_Jock

It’s the convent challenge at Project Runway. Cute though.

  • AmeliaEve

    Very Lipstick Librarian. Cute.

  • Anathema_Device

I think hair back and up is fine, but not the top knot. A sleek chignon would have been better. Also, a redder (less pink) lip color. Haaaaaaate the pumps. Would have preferred black, if she wasn’t going to go for a color.

    • carlaaxtman

Would have LOVED it much more if she’d have ripped the shoes off the model’s feet and made them her own.

  • Jessica Freeman

Her facial expressions make me believe she too, is confused about her ensemble.

  • nancymae

    Who is she?

    • Catiline

She played Captain America’s badass love interest. They might be my favorite couple from all of the Marvel movies.

      • turtleemily

        Peggy is my hero.

        • Catiline

I LOVED PEGGY. Her character was such a pleasant surprise. The last scene between her and Steve legitimately broke my heart.

  • marlie

Great dress, but for any season other than summer. And I would have maybe chopped a couple of inches off of the hem. But, cute and interesting overall.

    Hate the shoes, though.

    • Tatiana Luján

Well, summer in the UK can be cold.

      • marlie

Oh, I know, but this just seems so heavy for the season. And the last few days haven’t been that cool (assuming that this is from the last few days).

    • Rhonda Shore

I think a more tailored look would better suit her. THis is like a sack with some cute details. And the white shoes are awful.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

To be fair, July in the UK is no guarantee of warm weather… this lass is, was and always will be Peggy Carter to me; she rocks!

“Give me a girl at an impressionable age and she is mine for life!” – Miss Jean Brodie

  • majorbedhead

Shades of my old head mistress. Although the head mistress at my old school would be wearing sensible shoes rather than white pumps.

  • maggiemaybe

Serving up that Wednesday Adams realness! Love this look but it is a bit heavy for summer.

  • LadyCelia

That’s a very difficult dress to do well. The proportions are lovely–and that’s not often said of something that length.

    • conniemd

My complaint was the length. It’s really jarring to see that prissy a dress in lower mid-calf length. I would have liked it better in a shorter version, just below the knee or even almost mini. Put in a different hairstyle and some really mod pumps and bag and it would have been more interesting.

  • plinkiedoodle

No can do. Too much the sister-wife vibe here.

    • RedRaven617

  • nannypoo

I love it. She’s so cute. This is the first time I’ve seen her off-screen. I would love to see her featured often.

  • snarkykitten

Meh, it looks like something a kindergarten teacher would wear. “and what color is my collar? Gooooood!”

  • bertkeeter

A hand-me-down from a frumpy older sister or aunt? Beside all that the top is way to big in shoulders.

  • lobsterlen

I loved it to the white pumps. I will never get on board with this white pump trend.

  • FeminineLipstique

Tee hee, in the runway version, the model looks awkward trying to carry that hefty bag like it’s a clutch.

  • formerlyAnon

I like. Wish she’d done mustard pumps with a leather accent to match her nail polish.
Because I really am just that matchy-matchy in my heart.

  • judybrowni

Don’t fit, fall dress, not meant to be worn in this season — even with the desperate tack on of white heels.

Yes, I know the designers are pushing their fall line, but sweetie, just ’cause it’s free doesn’t mean you have to take it.

  • mjude

dear god not a dress for july. but other than wanting to faint looking at it, i kinda like it.

  • PastryGoddess

She’s missing one of those cotton caps to cover her hair

  • Eva_baby

I love that dress. But it looks all wrong on her. Seems too big and out of season. Even on the model it looks too big. But the shoes that the model is wearing gives the dress so much more life that the sad white pumps the celeb is wearing.

  • Cathy S

    I love that dress.

  • crash1212

Saw this on another blog and totally LOVED it…nice to see that you do, too! I’m with you on the white shoes, though. Hopefully they will go away come Memorial Day…that is the cut-off, right?

    • Anniebet

Gasp! You mean there is *another* blog?

  • decormaven

If only the stylist had pulled a pair of kickass pumps for this, as was shown in the runway look. Those white heels just look sad and a half size or two too big.

  • Janet B

    I like.
I’m surprised this comes from a Spring collection.

  • MilaXX

Agree, this is a cute dress, but feels more Fall than middle of July wear. I think the white pumps were an attempt to make the dress appear more summery than it is.

  • Qitkat

Seriously? She looks like she is dressed for 1910, going off to teach her first day of school.
And, another obscure celebrity I don’t know. And no, nobody needs to tell me.

    • formerlyAnon

I laughed, because so often when my kids are explaining (patiently & condescendingly) exactly *who* this or that celebrity person is, I have SUCH a hard time pretending that I care and am going to remember.

  • flamingoNW

Love the dress, okay with the hair, not liking the shoes or the earrings.

  • demidaemon

I would have liked to see the hem on this brought up an inch or two. At the current length, it feels a bit stuffy and overwhelming.

  • bellafigura1

No no no. Great dress, wrong event, wrong girl. Florence, shopping in Paris, yes. Tilda, swanning to lunch, sure. But this kid, this event? No. And somebody should pay for the abomination of those shoes.

  • I feel like I should really hate it a lot more than I actually do, so that somehow equals success – even though I’m suffocating just looking at her.

  • Coleen

Can we hack this to knee-length? I could even get behind those pumps if the dress was knee-length.

  • Minnie’s was so very summer and yes, this feels more fall (or spring) but I love, love, love this dress. And hate, hate, hate the pumps.

  • Lizbits

The dress really needs the touch of orange in the shoes that the model wore. White shoes just scream “look at me.”

  • I wish she would have carried her laundry bag like the model did. booo.
