Girl, That’s Not Your Dress: Solange Knowles in Prada

Posted on July 24, 2013

Honey, no.

Solange Knowles attends the premiere of “Blue Jasmine” in New York City in head-to-toe Prada.

Prada Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Daria Strokous

We truly appreciate your eagerness to embrace off-the-beaten-path fashion, dear, but some looks need to be left to the models to wear.

But hey, we love your shoes, so there’s that.

    It’s NOBODY’s dress, I’m afraid.

    • marlie

I should have read before I posted. 🙂

      • Flavia Pantoja

Oh don’t worry! I think it is probably an unanimous opinion around here! 😉

    • JP

My thoughts exactly! Whoever at Prada responsible for this should be taken out and shot.

  • I like the bag and the shoes, but they don’t go with the outfit. Or maybe I should say the outfit doesn’t go with them. I’m not sure that outfit would go with anything, though.

    • Rhonda Shore

      The bag is adorable.

  • Jonquil

What an awkward, misshapen mess. That thing would be terrible on anyone.

  • norseofcourse

Prada’s hiring five year-olds as designers now?

  • marlie

    This isn’t ANYONE’s dress.

  • It looks bad on the model as well. Solange looks so tired here, as though she were weighed down by life, which is exactly what one wearing this dress would feel.

  • I am already so tired of these needlessly complicated shapes.

    • filmcricket

Right? It seemed for a while there that we were going to get simple silhouettes with funky patterns – why couldn’t that have stuck around for a bit longer?

  • Clydette Wantland

  • AmeliaEve

If anybody could have made that work, it would be her. There is just no angle that can make that dress look good.

    • In_Stitches

      Maybe January Jones?

    • DilettanteDeconstructed

I could see Rooney Mara in it. Red lips, no accessories, and severe black pumps, perhaps.

      • ankali

Too would-be whimsical for the Audreybot, methinks. I don’t think this one is workable.

  • rajf

What is with all the really ugly, over-constructed, runway-only, dresses showing up lately?

  • barbarienne

I don’t think that’s the model’s dress, either. That’s some home-ec student’s dress. Some home-ec student who is going to get a failing grade on this project.

  • Sobaika

Looks like shit on the model, looks like shit on Solange, it is a shit dress.

  • clatie

Lucy and Ethel called, they want their fake Jacques Marcel dresses back.

PS Why can’t we post pictures? I have such a good one.

    • clatie

I am so in love with this picture, I just changed my avatar.

    • Sobaika

I’ve often wanted to include reaction gifs in my responses, but I think it’s better this way. I’m forced to articulate my thoughts rather than just show an image of Samantha Jones yelling about fashion roadkill.

      • clatie

I know, I know. Lucy and Ethel just look so wonderful in their burlap. And better than poor Solange.

        • Rand Ortega

I love the fact L & E look fabulous though the outfits are strictly for laughs, whereas Solange & Prada are totally serious & look utterly ridic!

          • clatie

            So true!

  • ErmengardeGreen

Yeah, man, whose dress is this. That is a fun one. A Fanning’s? Charlotte Gainsbourg’s?

    • Sobaika

      The trash bin’s.

      • demidaemon

    • Kent Roby

This dress would be perfect for a spy; just think of all the top-secret documents she could hide in those flaps.

  • Nope. Not even close. Even on the model that atrocity is complete whack doodle..

  • mhleta

I really like the 60s vibe she’s got going, but that dress is empirically a bad idea.

  • Tatiana Luján

Girl, that’s not your makeup either.

  • Stella Zawistowski

ANOTHER dress that looks like it was made in about five hours on the set of Project Runway. Especially the back — it looks like it was put together with a hot glue gun and it’s seconds away from falling apart.

  • bertkeeter

“Not her look”? Not anyones! There was a ton of great looks from this collection but this entire group only looks decent in very well edited photo shoots!

  • cocohall

It is staggering to me that this dress could 1) be sketched, 2) be cut and sewn and embellished, 3) be shown on the runway, 4) become available for purchase, and ultimately, 5) be chosen over what one would assume to many other options available to a woman as beautiful, interesting and fashion forward as Solange. Is there no one along this fashion track that would say “uh, erm, excuse me, so sorry, but this is ridiculous. Line a hamster cage with it if need be, but no, never let this garment see the light of day!

    • demidaemon

Hopefully, this was not purchased. More like “loaned out one day when Solange was drunk at the showroom.”

    • Beardslee

It is the product, beginning to end, of people who are the number one fans of their own fabulousness. No clinical eye was ever cast on this until it was posted here!

  • hmariec19

    That’s not ok.

  • TigerLaverada

It doesn’t even look good on the model. I think it would even look like shit on Iman.

    • sugarkane105

Anything Iman can’t pull off, no one can pull off.

      Also, hello panda friend!

  • Courtenay P

    say something nice: gorgeous shoes!

  • Betsy

This looks like a Pinterest fail! Including the runway look. “Oh, I have some extra fabric and some gee-gaws. Let’s just plaster all of it on this dress.” ICK! Icky-icky-ICK!!!

  • appliquer

    Girl, that isn’t anyone’s dress.

  • MilaXX

I love her love of wacky, but she should have ditched the skirt and worn a pair of skinny pants or left this dress in Elle Fanning’s closet.

    • Aurumgirl

Except, what the heck did Elle Fanning do? She’s a good person, and she doesn’t deserve that kind of dress.

      • MilaXX

She wore a dress from that collection a while back, shoes included (Probably 6 mths ago), and since she’s 13/14 years old we can forgive such foolishness.

  • What a bunch of badly shaped and ill-fitting dresses we’ve seen lately. What’s up!

  • Rand Ortega

Shiny ambitious gift wrap gone horribly wrong.

  • So, does mean that Vincent Libretti was in fact a genius ahead of his time?

  • Little_Olive

Are people still convincing themselves that anything coming form that Prada collection is pretty/wearable?

That ship has long sailed IMO.

  • Adrianna Grężak

What the hell happened this week? Is there a group of stylists who decided to create one big practical joke by dressing their celebrity clients in tent blouses (Elizabeth Olsen) and dresses? (Solange Knowles and Rachel Bilson)

    • MoHub

      With origami folding.

  • Upholstery is for the runway or furniture, not real life. But hey, if anybody had a chance of making it work, it was Solange. Better luck next time.

  • Jessica Freeman

Girl that is not your lipstick, either.

    • Heather

It’s funny, I haven’t been liking that lipstick color (seen recently on Hailee Steinfeld etc,) but I kind of think Solange can pull it off.

  • YoungSally

God – it’s like she went to the bathroom and left the whole thing stuck in her underwear. That said, I wonder if she knew it was worse from the front (and back) than it was from the side when she was posing for the top photo.

  • Aidan B

This dress elicited an out-loud, pained “oof” from me. That’s pretty bad.

  • d4divine

    That dress isn’t anyone’s dress.

  • decormaven

When a dress looks this frightful on Solange, it should be shipped off to Halloween costume stores. They’ll be popping up any moment.

  • ampg

What’s going on with Solange lately? She was shutting it down in outfit after outfit, and then all of a sudden she lost her style mojo and can’t seem to get it back.

    • In_Stitches

She swings to the fences every time which means she strikes out a lot. Lot of homers too, but a lot of misses as well.

  • Anniebet

Uh, my admiration for structured dresses just dropped to rock bottom for the moment. This isn’t doing anything for her whatsoever, other than making her look rather clueless.

  • Fish

Almost makes me think she was just trying to find a dress to go with her earrings. (Which do look pretty cool and I wish we had a closeup of.)

  • LaSylphide

Amateur hour in Home Ec class.

  • Trisha26

It’s not working on the model either. Hate the shoes.

  • AnnaleighBelle

I can envision the Ikea-like instructions that come with the dress in order to put it on.

  • quiltrx

What is this new trend of high-fashion designers putting out garments that look so poorly finished? It seems like it’s all we’re seeing…and it really cheapens the looks.
If this had stopped and that first seam/fold/whatever that is and just been a top, it would have been cute. But then it detoured to crazy town.

  • crash1212

That ain’t nobody’s dress. Not loving the shoes or bag either. Everything north of the neck is superb.

  • Qitkat

    Ridiculous embroidered origami satin pillowcase.

  • suzq

I don’t know how the model managed to walk down the runway without the dress sliding forward, as it is obviously doing on poor Solange. Perhaps she needed some garment tape to keep it from succumbing to gravity.

  • ankali

Miuccia, I’ve had it with this bullshit. KNOCK IT. THE FUCK. OFF.

  • Lilithcat

    That’s nobody’s dress, not even the model’s.

  • Few of these “high-fashion” dresses look good any place but the runway. Even Cate Blanchett or Gwyneth Paltrow couldn’t wear this. I honestly appreciate Solange’s effort. I always appreciate a celebrity who has the confidence to forego looking sexy.

  • unbornfawn

That’s a Frankendress if I ever saw one. Not crazy about the lip color either.

  • veleri

poorly folded blankets on a body. ugh.

  • Claudia

She always seems to default to that lip colour…or maybe its several lip colours, none of which I ever agree is friendly to her face.

    • 909girl601world

  • A Shiny O’Connor

I like it – ‘Foxxy Cleopatra Wears Prada’.

  • Also, honey, did you get that purse from Claire’s?

  • Diego!

NO to the shoes, dress and make up! Go home!

  • Shawn EH

Those shoes deserve a much better dress. Why not just make a mini-skirt kimono, Prada?

  • boweryboy

I loved that Prada collection, but most it was not wearable off the runway.

The back is the best part of this dress.
