Cover Girl: Katy Perry for ELLE UK Magazine

Posted on July 31, 2013

In retrospect, tweed diapers seem like an obvious choice for Miss Katy, but we honestly never would have thought to dress her in these outfits.

She looks good. A little more high-fashion than we’re used to. She’s working that grown-up schtick for all its worth at the moment. We wonder if she’ll eventually snap and start dressing like a cartoon character again. We hope so. Although technically, we should be completely supportive of her style evolution. And let’s face it: tweed diapers are still pretty cartoon-y.

Well if anyone can wear a tweed diaper and make it look like actual clothing, it’s Katy.

    • Beardslee

I agree, but what an odd outfit! It reminds me of the sweet little Hanna Anderson sun suits I’d put my daughter in when she was a baby; a bloomer to wear over her diaper, and a tent like tunic in the same fabric. On a grown woman, it’s just a really dumb idea.

      • Aurumgirl

I was just going to say it. My mom made me all kinds of outfits like this when I was a toddler, the bloomers were supposed to hide the diapers. Applied to an adult the concept takes on a tragic nursing home element which really shouldn’t be thought of as “fashionable”.

  • MilaXX

Not a fan of this. I dislike the hair in both shots and those tweed diapers look silly. The only thing saving this is her natural prettiness.

      • marshmallowjane

        Granny tweedies.

  • Chuck Barthelme

That’s a great tweed for her skin and hair tone. Not so sure I’d endorse the diaper or bloomers, or whatever the hell that has going on. Thing is, it would kind of be a fresh take on tweed if they were shorts instead. Either way, she’s pulling it off more than almost anyone else could.

    • RebeccaKW

Something like this is probably what she should have worn to the Smurfs 2 red carpet.

  • mlle

I like the styling of the Prada better on her than on the runway.

    • twigg

The runway is very walk of shame.

  • Glam Dixie

Well….um….huh? I don’t like it, but I don’t hate it. She looks pretty good, I guess. Ambivalent is the word.

  • decormaven

I like the Prada shot, but wish there was a better view of the bodice.

  • Andrew Schroeder

Well she’s got that giant gold semi driving around California, so she could go either way.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I dunno, I’m kinda bored. I don’t mind crazy, “Human Easter Egg” Katy. There are lots of gorgeous, stylish fashionistas who can werq the hell out of clothes – I don’t need her to be one of them, you know? Does that make any sense? I love the swans in Chanel and Dior, don’t get me wrong. But I also like having just *one* person, for fun, who looks like Pandora Boxx is their personal stylist.

    • demidaemon

Man, I want Pandora Boxx to be my personal stylist. Just think how fun getting dressed every day would be!

  • Sue_Asponte

I don’t get the diaper, but somehow she looks fabulous anyway. I like the tweedy style evolution. If this were an in or out, I’d vote IN. Despite the diaper.

  • Rand Ortega

    Are those…bloomers?

  • annabelle archer

This the best she has ever looked.

  • alyce1213

Dolce & Gabbana deserve to go to jail, just for taking that nice glen plaid and making it into a stupid bloomer/diaper. It might have been a great dress. Nonetheless, Miss Katy is looking rally fine these days.

  • Tatiana Luján

What’s uo with Elle and all the diapers we’ve seen on their covers lately?

  • SewingSiren

My sister and I used to have that exact outfit on the cover, except in white pique. She was 5 and I was 2.

  • Kiltdntiltd

Love the “WHAT did you just say to me” expression in the cover shot.

    • SewingSiren

When your bloomers are showing you kind of have to keep that look or else somebody’s going to laugh.

  • Just Me

She is making that Prada dress sing!

  • leahpapa

Off-topic, and I’m sure it’s because I’m some philistine/rube/prole/dolt that I don’t get it, but can someone tell me why the Prada models all had that running-late-to-work wet hair? I’m sure Miuccia’s trying to tell me something about rhizomatic poststructural feminism and subverting the authority of The Gaze – in addition to getting me to buy a $1500 skirt – but I’m too obtuse to discern it.

    • formerlyAnon

      Ya cracking me up, girl.

  • Emily Smith

lol the model looks hilarious in the tweed diaper. they must put stuff on sometimes and have to hide their inner laughter/tears at how absurd it is.

  • mmebam

I just want to give her hair some kind of oil treatment, or blowout, or something…

  • marlie

No one else can wear these clothes and make them work EXCEPT for Katy.

  • vahtel

She’s kind of rockin’ an Alison Brie vibe in these shots. I like it.

  • Diego!

I LUV HUH! <3 I don't like at all her first outfit but her face is transmiting fierceness. And she looks fierce as sh*t in the second one!!!

  • NoveltyRocker

I see how being interested in playing with basic shapes on the human form over wearability produces a runway bathing suit. But is it that same interest that produces a diaper shape? Like they just added a third dimension to the equation? The hell??

  • Louise Bryan

That second picture is pretty amazing. And tweed diapers sound so very British, after all.

    • Kate4queen

      Tweed nappies

  • quiltrx

If I stop the first picture just below her waist on my screen, I love it. And I don’t have to deal with the bottom part.
That bottom part, and the whole second look, read “heavy, hot, ITCHY” to me!

  • marshmallowjane

At the first look at the photo I’m thinking the bottom third-thirds will be a skirt or pants. These shorts are a surprise that doesn’t work. This fabric isn’t right for shorts, IMO. Oh, wait. Are these granny panties or what?

  • formerlyAnon

    I LIKE.

I hope she stays on this growing up arc. The way she looks in these make me think I’m going to really enjoy how she does “adult woman.”

  • Beth Ann

When I saw the cropped image on your home page, I mistook Katy for Leigh Lezark for a moment.

  • MoHub

I love a good glen plaid, but the poufy panties are a crime. I almost wrote “have to go,” but that would have put her in Black Rectangle of Death territory.

  • Aurumgirl

She is Jennifer Connelly’s twin in these photos.

  • stubbornthoughts

Hate the first one. LOVE the second one.

  • Kent Roby

Thanks to this site, I now read “tweed” as a form of “twee”!

  • Danielle L

    Love her makeup.

  • guest2visits

Pretty. Though I love that tweedy top on the cover almost as much as I hate the diaper shorts that go with it.

  • kalisa

Yeah, but that dress looks better on her than it does on the model.
