Amy Poehler at the “Blue Jasmine” Premiere

Posted on July 24, 2013

This is such a cute idea, even if it didn’t quite work out.

Amy Poehler attends the premiere of “Blue Jasmine” in New York City.

We don’t think the top and the shorts quite go with each other (or at least, go with each other as well as they should) and neither of them seems to fit her all that well. The hair’s not doing it for us either. And by “not doing it for us,” we mean “looks awful.” But the shoes are cute! Even if they do look like they’re cutting off circulation.

Honestly, we don’t know why we’re trying so hard to like this when we have problems with every element, but like we said: cute idea. If everything fit correctly and the shorts coordinated with the top a little better, we’d be slinging the huzzahs at her.

Looks like she just got out of the spin cycle.

  • No No No. Those shorts look like they belong to an 80 year old man in Boca Raton.

    • alyce1213

80 year old man shorts paired with 80 year old woman shoes (that are too narrow for her feet).

      • teensmom99

I kind of like 80 year old women shoes especially when they fit. And while I know it’s not a fashion mecca, Ann Taylor loft just had tons of shorts like these and I almost bought a pair for the beach. Instead I got linen ones.

      • Heather

The shoes are weird, they are both too narrow and too long.

    • PeggyOC

Maybe they were. I now want to see the SNL skit where she talks an old guy out of his shorts.

    • MoHub

But the octogenarian would be wearing knee socks and closed-toe sandals.

  • PeggyOC

I don’t get the tiny shorts with the buttoned up long-sleeve shirt thing. If it’s hot enough to wear tiny shorts, why are you sweating your neck. Shame, really, because the shorts aren’t bad on her, but the shirt is truly hideous.

  • WTF? She looks dressed to make a run to the grocery store. Even then, she ought to pull her blouse down. She’s so dang cute. Did anyone here every see her in Upright Citizen’s Brigade on the Comedy Channel years ago? Amy is one funny and versatile woman. I’m puzzled at her lack of effort here when I’ve seen her look so much better.

    • homespunner

A grocery store run? In this? Agreed–she looks awful and that she is funny, versatile.

      • I can only imagine throwing these things on together when laundry needs to be done and something is needed from the store.

    • Until you said it, it never hit me that she was in Upright Citizen’s Brigade! Holy crap! And it had Matt Walsh from Veep!

      • She played a passive-aggressive woman in a wheelchair who has a couple over for dinner with her husband, and all hell breaks loose when her real resentments come out. I’d had no idea who she was at the time–except that I believe she used to play Conan O’Brien’s girlfriend from the audience on his show. These were both before SNL. This was one of the funniest skits I’d seen, but nobody I know ever saw the show. I remember Matt Walsh. I haven’t seen his current show.

        • I used to love UCB, it was up there with Kids in the Hall when I was a teenager.

    • ccinnc

From my first glimpse of the thumbnail on Facebook I was sure it was Chloe Sevigny and was looking forward to hearing her character description from TLo.

  • vickiefantastico

Parks and Rec girls, get some new stylists! Geez!

  • Sobaika

The fit on that shirt… *shudder*

    I need a palate cleanser.

    • Little_Olive

I second that -TLo, please give us some Cate Blanchett STAT.

  • 3boysful

I think you mean if things fit, her personality might make this work. But that shirt, while arguably fitting her shoulders, is WAY too small in the bust. I could not leave my closet in that! I am appalled someone let her hit a red carpet in this. Fire them, Amy!

  • alyce1213

The shirt doesn’t even come close to fitting, the shorts are chunky (as opposed to sleek and well-fitted), and the shoes look like Footsmarts that she should have ordered in wide.
Amy is so funny and so lovely, she deserves better.

  • Jessica Freeman

Everything is too small, and she needs to at least unbutton the top 2 buttons on the blouse.

    • Meg0GayGuys6

Yea, I was wondering why she chose to button it all the way up. It seems like it would look a lot better opened up a bit. And maybe untucking would hid the tightness of the shorts? IDK, but step one is definitely unbuttoning a few buttons.

      • demidaemon

I don’t think anything could save a pair of satin short-shorts paired with Grandma’s gingham blouse.

  • AHCK!!! Sweet Baby Jesus, no. The fit is making my teeth itch. The shoes are causing me physical pain. She looks like she’s playing a very sweet but potentially learning impaired character in a Lifetime Movie.

  • siriuslover

Or if she unbuttoned one or two buttons on that top. She looks like she’s being strangled by that blouse.

  • veleri

I like it! it’s fresh and fun! not sure about the shoes though

  • teensmom99

Some of us have too much boob for a button down blouse. I know that they look great and we want to wear them, but it just isn’t in the cards. I think with a style top that suited her more, this could have been fun (okay and with better fitting shoes).

    • I was just thinking this. I sympathise with her boob/shirt situation, but she needs to either go up a size or pick a different style.

      • Little_Olive

Or a different bra. Shirt-pulling is many, many times the bra’s fault.

        • She does need a bra that hoiks her ladies up more, that’s true. But I still think that shirt may be slightly too small.

      • teensmom99

Different style for sure. A bigger shirt would fit wrong at the shoulders. And if a well endowed gal wears a button down blouse, it has to be unbuttoned, I think.

    • Jessica Freeman

I found one that works from Brooks Brothers. I was bound and determined to have the classic white button down, and even being tall, its long enough and fits the girls.

    • Heather

I often have gaping with button-fronts; that is why God created double-sided tape.

      • teensmom99

While I agree re a better bra or double sided tape, etc., I think we can all agree that some styles just don’t work for some bodies. While I am Amy’s biggest fan, I think that as a short person she must already know that some things just don’t work on her whatever the undergarment, tailoring, etc. I think that while there are circumstances where a buttoned up blouse could be tailored to suit her, I think there are many options that would look better. I’m not being nasty or sizist–it’s just a fact of life for all of us that some things don’t flatter us. And I even think the shorts and shoes are okay.

  • Jennifer Bober

I could deal with the color combo if things actually fit her. I agree that it was a really cute idea. If she had even unbuttoned the blouse a bit, it would have released the fabric to lie better, but the rise of the short is off and there is not nearly enough room for the ta-tas in that blouse.

  • TAGinMO

And yet, she’s still the best-dressed P&R star of the day…so far.

    • Imasewsure

Wait… we haven’t heard from Rashida Jones yet… can’t wait to see what kind of WTF-ery she had on that night

  • In_Stitches

This new trend of fully buttoning shirts on men and women only works on the flat chested. Wouldn’t work on Hugh’s meaty tits and it’s not working on Amy.

  • kipper

” LOOK! I recycled my Dad’s sans-a-belt pants from 1977 ” – nothing about this works…. unless possibly with child again and tired was what she was going for………

  • mhleta

Boy, are you guys being nice! This is a huge collection of “WTF?”

  • jkatkins

Hey, ladystars! No one can see your shoe size, so how ’bout buying a pair that actually fits?

  • Glam Dixie

That hair is almost blinding me to the horrible fit on the shirt and the ugly shoes. The shorts are actually the least offensive thing here and I still don’t like them. She needs to go home and start over.

  • formerlyAnon

This is how ordinary* people who don’t pay close attention to dress look when they’re trying to create a “cute look,” often under the influence of a magazine article.

*People who are neither photographed nor filmed for a living and whose daily activities do not require a sharp appearance.

  • BuffaloBarbara

And that’s why I don’t wear button shirts in inflexible fabric — bunches and gathers and pulls around whatever curves you’ve got under it.

  • MilaXX

I like the look too, but I think it’s Amy’s personality making her hard to resist. I wonder if the shirt would fit better if it wasn’t buttoned all the wu u

    • MoHub

Exactly. I gave up button-downs for knit tops years ago to fit my 32Ds. Big boobs, a small frame, and front buttons are a deadly combination.

      • RebeccaKW

Word. A combo of big boobs and linebacker shoulders are not the body frame meant for button downs. I do have a few that I wear unbuttoned, more like a jacket, to work.

        • MoHub

Believe me: It’s even worse with narrow shoulders.

  • jhedman

Anyone remember how Tina Fey used to be a walking disaster? I recall reading that it had a lot to do with her transition from being a comedy writer to an actress, and coming to terms with what that meant. I have no idea what kind of relationship Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have (if any), but they’re both in the very, very small club of gifted comedy actresses who are wicked cute, and on that basis alone, Tina really should loan her Amy her gays, or help her pick out her own. That girl needs help.

    • alyce1213

They’re very close friends. If you want to see them working off each other, watch “Baby Mama.”

  • YayaGurl

She needs to mail that shit to Lena Dunham.

    • demidaemon

Are you trying to permanently scar everyone’s retinas?

      • Dagney

okay, I just laughed out loud.

  • Sonja Brisson

How is this a cute idea?

  • guest2visits

Nope. Sloppy and such a bad fit. Maybe pull the blouse out (press it) and unbutton a few. Then i wouldn’t notice the shiny, slouchy tap pants as much. Better shoes please; these are mommy/bank teller/church tea type-sandals. Cute smile and hair-do.

  • twocee

No, just no. It’s an idea that should’ve never seen the light of day.

  • giddypony

    just awful. She looks uncomfortable.

  • AC Simons

As a short busty woman myself, I steer clear of these kinds of shirts in general. They never fit right. It’s really unflattering to button them all the way to the top, too. Oh Amy, what possessed you?

  • Lilithcat

    ATTN: Amy
    RE: Office dress code

Secretaries are not permitted to wear shorts, not even on casual Fridays.

  • RuthGo

What on earth is happening with that shirt? Is it just how she’s standing or does it just not fit?

    • conniemd

It’s too tight across the boob area. I have a blouse like that which is one size too small. The cut means it’s slightly bigger towards the bottom of the blouse than it is where it’s supposed to hit the boobs. So rides up to a place where it can fit across the boobs.

The hair bugs me more as looks dirty, so it lies flatter than it should

  • SugarSnap108

It looks like she grabbed the last available items from Cheap Jack’s sales rack.

  • crash1212

Did no one think to tell her to pull her shirt down? Comes to that, did no one think to tell her to go up a size? Did no one tell her those shoes were just awful? I love, love, love me some Amy, but this is tragic. Coulda been a contender, but not.

    • did no one tell her not to go out of the house looking like that?

  • I hate it when I wear a shirt that rides up like that. It’s almost always something you don’t know is going to happen until it’s too late, you are already out in public.. then the shirt ends up hanging in the closet for a decade because you hope you can wear it someday and it will magically not ride up anymore.

  • Heather

On the other hand, her pedi is pretty!

  • d4divine

I don’t mind it..I think the outfit would look better in person…if she posed differently…who am I kidding, I think Amy Poehler is brilliant and I give her an A for life.

  • ashtangajunkie

I love her and want to love everything she does…but in this case, I simply cannot.

  • Hillary Meredith

Is it me or are we veering dangerously close to Chloe Sevigny territory with this one? I can almost see the alter post.

  • quiltrx

Ugh. Nothing fits, and nothing is very pretty/flattering either.

  • Honey, there’s this thing called a mirror. If a mere mortal, such as myself can own one, so can you! Send a minion to Target to get you one. Then use it!

  • Rand Ortega

It’s Amy. 1 look at the hilariously adorable face, which looks like it’s about say, “REALLY?” & the rest is nebulous.

  • Imasewsure

No you guys are too nice… it’s all awful

  • Danielle L

Unbutton that top button, Amy. It’s gotta be sweltering.

  • majorbedhead

Her pinkie toes look like they’re trying to escape. The shorts….yish. And that shirt doesn’t fit her at all. So, yeah, no.

  • Ally

I think she must be wearing a really tragic bra. There’s something off about her breasts/the fit of the shirt.

  • Just Me

No, honey. No…this is not your outfit, sweetie. Run! Forrest! Run! And as you are running, please give the middle finger and a job termination letter to your stylist. He or she hates you. For real…like “check your cereal for rat poison” hate.

  • Mars Tokyo

Awful awful awful– the whole thing.

  • Tabby_abby

I have never seen such a poorly fitting shirt on anyone. I like the shoes though.

  • demidaemon

I think Amy just naturally inclines someone to like something, even when they shouldn’t. Also, see my comment about one-upping someone on the previous post. Aubrey, you have been put on notice. This is just as much of a tragedy as the deflated boobs dress, just for different reasons. This outfit just makes me embarrassed for Amy, whereas Aubrey’s dress confused and horrified me.

  • marlie

None of this works, and I like the shoes least of all. Everything’s so ill-fitting that the whole outfit looks hella uncomfortable.

  • jmorino08

Has she been taking fashion advice from Rashida Jones?! This looks like something she would wear

  • decormaven

All levels of wrong. Hon, don’t try this look again.

  • largishbearishAtlish

awww… its so cute when stars (“just like us”!) try to do home perms… with similar results (remember these from the 70s?)
and the outfit…other than nothing fitting, or matching…oh wait, you’re going somewhere where there are cameras??

I love a good flea market find (or two) myself (the shoes, pants, shirt, undies?) and all, but c’mon..really? I have seen you do (much) better. Shouldn’t there be a montage sequence where all the ‘hot’ girls gather you in the ladies room (big enough for a whole camera crew!) to create a great outfit out of pieces ripped off from there clothes (and what they have stuffed in their bras… what song should we pic?

  • Anniebet

This is meant to be a costume in one of her comedy skits? If not, she seriously needs a fashion intervention. Go TLo!

  • bertkeeter

How does anyone not let her know “early on” that nothing about this look is working for her…n maybe a quick change would be a great idea?

  • Jacqueline Wessel

A long-sleeved blouse with shorts??? Belt loops without a belt??? And yet she looks so happy. (I would never leave the house looking like this.)

  • LaSylphide

How can anybody wear short shorts and manage to look dowdy?

  • Dagney

Ugh!!! SUCH a cute concept! But for all that is holy, FINISH it!

    #1 Tailor. Tailor. Tailor.
#2 Belt. Please god. A belt.
#3 Kicky shoes in a saturated color that are not borrowed from the sale rack at a 99 cent store.
    #4 Tailor.

    • MoHub

      Also a better bra

  • prettybigkitty

    So close yet so far.

  • stacey

No to all of it! And what do you guys think about her hair color? It seems too light for her….she has toddler hair here….I think a slightly darker tone/more lowlights? would flatter her skin more. She is so cute but her dress sense is frumpish.

  • veleri

I have problems with the nail polish, especially on the toenails.
Well, I’d rather have my toes cut off than have them polished (so that’s my probem) however I don’t think the color is doing her any favor.

  • Contralto

  • Darren Nesbitt

This looks like Leslie Nope trying to hard.

  • every bit of it is ill fitting, which makes it hard to even know if this could work.
