Amanda Seyfried for Harper’s Bazaar Korea Magazine

Posted on July 08, 2013

This is some of the very best styling we’ve ever seen on Amanda.

Amanda Seyfried covers the July 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar Korea magazine in Dolce&Gabbana photographed by Ahn Jooyoung and styled by Park Hyesoo and Hong Hyeonkyeong.

You wouldn’t think so from looking at tiny little blonde, blue-eyed her, but Amanda seems to be difficult to style for some reason. Having seen her on a ton of red carpets and in various editorials, we’ve noticed that a range of stylists can’t seem to quite find that look for her that sets off her own looks and personality. There’s a natural coquettish quality to her that isn’t very modern or very American. Very Lillian Gish, in a way. To be a bit more blunt about it, her look is pure Lolita and that’s a tough look to sell to mainstream audiences in 2013. We don’t mean she should be styled to a girlish effect or made to look younger than she is; just that her big-eyed sensual innocence is what sets her apart from every other generic blonde starlet out there, and this styling – both the clothes and the hair and makeup -  manages to tap into that without being weird about it. That picture of her in the white Gucci is the best look we’ve ever seen her in, period. A shame it probably wouldn’t translate to something like a red carpet.

That red Dolce is glorious on her with the hair and makeup. I want to hire the army of gays who made that entire look.

      • StellaZafella

It was, apparently, only 2 for that shot…but they clearly get the concept and understand the power of “no”. As in, No to heavy eyeliner, No to over contoured “drag” looks on this gorgeous face.

Want Celine Mini Mouse shoes. Oh…and Amanda looks fab.

      • Jacqueline Wessel

Yeah, after I saw those it was hard to see anything else. Amanda does look fab.

      • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I always imagine those Celine shoes as perfect for a hostess having a party in her home – glamorous fuzzy slippers.
Needless to say, I wouldn’t turn them down (but don’t have room in my shoe budget for such an extravagance, alas).

      • SewingSiren

And I thought I was the only one.

    • barbarienne

I think the trick was letting her eyes speak for themselves. It always seems as if stylists are saying, “Draw attention to her glorious eyes!” and then gooping on makeup around them until she looks either creepily alien, or like she’s trying too hard.

Whoever did her here knew exactly how to hold back and work with her natural beauty instead of trying to overpower it.

      • MilaXX

Agreed. In a way they played up the eyes by not playing them up.

        • Kristin McNamara

I always thought it was such a perfect assessment the day TLo assimilated Amanda with Mila Kunis. It was years ago, during MK’s Black Swan pole-dance, but I remember them saying how she really did resemble MK, if you just turned her brown eyes into blue and her brown hair into blonde. I’ve never forgotten that, for some reason, and the analogy is crystal clear in this shoot.

      • Sobaika

This is very true – she’s sported a lot of heavy liner and shadow on the red carpet and it’s very distracting.

        • ballerinawithagun

I have big eyes and blonde hair (well gray, so out of a box now) and eyeliner and heavy eye shadow has always looked hilarious on me. Even basic eye shadow looks as if I’m over doing it.

The white caftan feels spot on for the upcoming Linda Lovelace biopic

    • homofascist

Oh Korean fashion magazines! You just never disappoint.

      • Airkisses

I was going to write… Leave it to the Koreans!

    • HomeOfficeGirl

The cover is perfection – gorgeous in red!!

    • Coolekat

      Great description of her look.

    • SewingSiren

Beautiful. You are so right about the white dress. She should own it and wear it often.

    • Pollyp

Cover: perfect. Gucci: perfect. Céline: Perfect. Only fault: Find another way to look sexy other than keeping your mouth open.

      • Rhonda Shore

        it beats duck lips.

    • Little_Olive

      Incredible.

And you are right, and I like that about here: she’s not your typical skinny blue-eyed blonde who poses on GQ with her mouth half-open and saying “I’m very normal, I don’t really feel sexy”. (Amanda, please don’t do it).

    • kim bunchalastnames

yes. she looks better with sweet, soft styles — not necessarily romantic, but not really edgy or bold.

    • Monzerrat Ontiveros

All i can say is: what the f**k with those Celine shoes??? Love the cover, by the way…

      • dorothea_brooke

        Really. I mean, really?

    • decormaven

Stunning cover! Agreed- best she’s ever looked. Kudos!

    • flamingoNW

Well, I agree she generally isn’t styled that well but boy, don’t agree on the white Gucci. Average at best…

    • Qitkat

Love the comparison to Lillian Gish. My favorite is the revamp of the Celine look.

    • Julie

I think you guys are onto something about Amanda Seyfried having a unique look. She’s really popular in Japan, which might have something to do with her looks being a little interesting, different, and not entirely American.

      • Little_Olive

And the huge (anime) eyes! She could play Sailor Moon any day.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

About her eyes — the prettiest, most flawless of diamonds always looks best in the simplest mount.

    • Sagecreek

Following up on the Unks’ musings on how hard she is to style/image, I’m just not sure that Linda Lovelace was a good choice for her at this juncture.

    • ashtangajunkie

      I absolutely love that cover.

    • formerlyAnon

I think it’s time to require that ALL the creative types – photographers, stylists, editors, etc. at U.S. Vogue be required to rotate through Korea Vogue, in teams, for 6 month remedial internships so they can perhaps get a refresher on how to turn out something lovely that shows off both the clothing and the model/actress.

    • Yvette Monson

It’s bc she looks like an anime character!

    • demidaemon

Leave it to Korea to get it right.

      • conniemd

My first thought on seeing these pics. They do an amazing job of holistically having a vision and translating that to clothing, make-up, hair, etc.

    • macwell

Amanda resembles the Asian model, Devon Aioki. If they can style her, then….?

    • Anniebet

She radiates adorableness. (Is that a word?) Anyway, she’s pretty perfect here, but WTF is the Celine model wearing on her feet – fluffy high heel bedroom slippers?

      • DuBey2

Those are the Celine fur shoes that just make me laugh every time I see them. I think they’re mink. Those would be the pumps and they showed them (in vogue, I believe) outside, at poolside, in a grassy park, and all sorts of other hilarious ways.

        • Donna Tabor

They would look great on Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck, wouldn’t they?

          Snort.

        • Gwyndall

At first glance, I thought they were fuzzy slippers!

    • ankali

She looks like a dream in that Gucci.

    • unbornfawn

      Love that cover shot.

    • sekushinonyanko

I think they are all beautiful pictures, but the Gucci is a little nightgownish.

    • marlie

She looks really beautiful here. I’ve always thought that there was something a little… Off about her look, but this editorial is perfect for her. She looks lovely.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I now have eyebrow envy. She looks glorious.

    • Claudia

Lily Kane is looking pretty fabu here. Oooh, I hope we get a flashback in the new VM movie!!!

    • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

Her face looks the best I’ve ever seen her, period. Fantastic styling and makeup. Many times on the red carpet she had makeup on that made her look sort of weird in not a good way, but here her beauty shines and flourishes.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

That white Gucci is spectacular. She even looks good in the Celine and let’s face it, that’s a hideous dress. Her cover shot is what sells it though. Just stunning.

    • desi_girl

      I LOVE that cover!

    • cowper

She is rather an Asian ideal of beauty, no? Giant eyes, porcelain skin, childlike innocence…I wonder what she would look like in full Asian regalia.

    • cowper

“Travel Note! How to look like you just stepped off a plane.” (This is the caption that goes with yesterday’s photo of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.)

    • Lesley

dying over the shot of amanda in that Gucci dress!!
