Allison Janney at the CW, CBS and Showtime 2013 Summer TCA Party

Posted on July 31, 2013

Guttural 7 am T Lo editorial meeting:

Lo: Fine. Sarah Michelle Gellar. Who else?

T: Allison Janney at the TCA party.

Lo: Sometimes I don’t understand you.

T: So it’s not high fashion. So what? She’s put together and she looks good in an outfit that makes her seem relatable.

Lo: And what are we going to say about her?

T: Just that, I guess.

Allison Janney attends the CW, CBS and Showtime 2013 Summer TCA Party in Beverly Hills, California.

Lo: She doesn’t look THAT good.

T: Fine. The jacket and pants don’t really belong together, do they?

Lo: No, they do NOT. Different weights. Different whites.

T: True story. I guess I just liked the idea of the outfit.

Lo: Everything would be fine if it was all much more expensive and had designer labels all over it.

T: Tell the nice people at home you’re kidding when you say that.

Lo: What nice people?

What? No input from the cats?

      • Louise Bryan

      • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

At 7 AM they were probably still sleeping.

        • Louise Bryan

Cats? You must be joking. At that hour, they would be sitting either on a chest or on papers being reviewed, doing the best imitation of Audrey 2 they could muster; “Feed me! Feed me now!”

          • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

My cats only ask for food when I go to the kitchen; the rest of the time they can’t be bothered in trying to get my attention.

          • SRQkitten

My cats know that refrain and it starts the minute I get up. Isn’t our sole purpose in life to look after their needs and food is top o’ the list.

    • Sunraya

      Haha! Nice people, indeed!

I do think she looks great, easy, breezy and comfortable. And she does not age – bitch.

    • Emily Smith

      I don’t even recognize her.

    • Karen Belgrad

Did she and Sarah Michelle Geller have a washed-out hair color contest?

      • iheartbuffy

        if so, who wins?

        • Karen Belgrad

Nobody wins, they interwebz just weep.

    • mlle

Does anyone know when, clockwise, this party was held? This reads to me as daytime, whereas SMG was in an evening look.

      • iheartbuffy

late-LATE evening look. Like where the make-up wouldn’t have been as scary

        • mlle

Though it would still have been unfortunate.

    • hughman

That excessive blush and the white suit are really giving her a Patch Adams vibe.

*not one of the nice people*

      • stellamaris73

Co-signed. She looks like she used the old Heloise trick of applying of bit of one’s lipstick as blush– same Pepto-pink color.

    •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

      Sitcom doctor.

      • decormaven

Truly. Is this a castoff outfit from “Private Practice?”

        • Kristin McNamara

I actually thought this was Kate Walsh in the thumbnail!

    • Julie Chase

She’s gorgeous anyway. I wish she’s go back to slightly darker hair, but my crush on her remains.

    • crash1212

It’s Allison Janney…what more needs to be said? I love her. Don’t particularly love the execution of the outfit, but it was a good idea. Perhaps you could discuss her eye wear? I think her glasses are fab…see first sentence!

      • Spicytomato1

I would love an ID on those glasses. Mine just broke and these are what I’m looking for. The closest I can find are Ray Bans but I hate the prominent logo. Actually way too many frames have honkin’ logos but I digress.

        • shorty j

Not exactly the same but I have a couple pairs from Derek Cardigan that are nerdy and awesome. One of them has little semicolons on the upper corners, which is why I thought of it. (I’m a librarian. It’s allowed, haha.)

          • Spicytomato1

I just checked them out online and you’re right, they’re similar and great. And the prices are refreshingly sane. They even come in progressives, which I need. Thank you!

      • Kate

Ugh yes! I love her. Since the West Wing I have fallen head over heels for this woman. And I agree, who makes those glasses? I love them.

    • MilaXX

I don’t like the jacket and pants, I love her nerd glasses and she still looks better than folks most of the that showed up at this thing.

    • ohayayay

      Skunk hair.

    • clairellis

Either I’m broken or having an off day bc I think she looks cute. Love the glasses and make up. Hair looks a littl fried but that’s ok. Overall she’s not killing my soul.

      • lonepear

“She’s not killing my soul”–same, but I hope this is not a high bar! Unless your soul is very sensitive to fashion, in which case please take extreme caution before viewing this site… or going outside.

    • Kiltdntiltd

Yep. No nice people here, just cranky, opinionated Bitter Kittens. But I loves me some AJ.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

I love her but I don’t like the glasses at all. Too chunky for her narrow face and that overall summer suit look.

    • sagecreek

What did she do to her hair?

      • kimmeister

        Asked for gray highlights?

      • filmcricket

Not sure all – or any – of that is actually hers.

    • Sara Brams-Miller

She looks better now than ten years ago.

    • Chuck Barthelme

She looks great in the idea of that outfit. Like she’s channeling Diane Keaton just a bit. I like it.

    • Dan_In_NYC

First, I love her. That said, forget firing – she needs to FLOG her makeup gay. And I’d say this hairstyle is a little, uh, youthful for her. Glasses are great, and like the idea of the outfit, but agree it needs to be more high end and luxe feeling.

Her in the Way Way Back, I’ll say it again: Amazing.

      • travelgirl28

She better get an Oscar nom for Way, Way Back — she was the best thing in the movie. Cute movie, but she was awesome.

    • Sara Leigh Merrey

I like it. Except for the excessive pink blush. It looks like something I’d wear. Oh, well, then. Perhaps it’s not that great.

    • annabelle archer

She’s always my favorite part of any ensemble she’s in. I kinda wanna Single White Female her. Sans all the killing, of course.

    • Uncle Spike

Paging Dr. Janney…paging Dr. Janney. Stylist triage needed in the emergency room stat. Patient goes by the name of Shailene Woodley. Chief complaint: poor fashion proportions. Patient also in need of a pedicure; aesthetician requested to accompany Dr. Janney.

    • Shawn EH

How dare she look good in off the rack? C’mon, TLo, even GQ just did a spread where all the cute boy clothes were from Gap and Target. Salient point: even mass market does the hip, slimmer silhouettes of high fashion now.

    • Scimommy

I think she looks great without the designer labels. But I’m plebeian like that.

    • SewingSiren

    • Just Me

Ok, the hair and makeup gays are obviously having an off day. But, the outfit itself is cute. She looks normal and respectful of the venue and most importantly, someone I would want to talk while there…mostly about how the other people are dressed. The “Tyra” conversation alone could take two cocktails and a plateful of crudites to exhaust.

      • annabelle archer

You just know she’s a “if you don’t have anything nice to say, come sit by me” kind of gal. Our kind of gal.

    • majorbedhead

I’m giving her a pass because it’s Allison Janney and I love her. I think the outfit is cute. It’s not tragic, at least, and I do love the glasses. Her hair, on the other hand…..

    • kimmeister

I’m not perceiving a clash of the whites of her jacket and pants.

    • PastryGoddess

Can we please ban bubblegum pink lipstick from the universe PLEASE

    • NoveltyRocker

CHIEF of Staff can do no wrong, she is just awesome!!

    • sleah_in_norcal

she looks like a doctor who stopped by the grocery store on the way home from the office.

    • marlie

I think she looks good. Plus, I love her, so I’m inclined to be kind.

    • Diego!

I think she looks very chic here. And what about her face??? Girl is getting younger? She looks STUNNING in the skin department. Geez, I envy her!

    • teensmom99

You’re kidding with the hair, right. That is fried hair.

    • anotherkate

Is it something with the lighting at this particular event? Because I think the makeup looks SO pretty in the full body shots, but then when we get the close-up they all look dusted with white and over-blushed (see Cobie Smulders, too). What’s going on, does anyone know? Am I crazy?

    • PeaceBang

Sure, the suit is a little Dress Barn but I love the cobalt blue and white and the shoes work, and it’s Allison Janney. For whom I can gladly overlook the hair and the blush.

    • Erica Woods Tucker

hilarious…almost as funny as scary tit witch

    • Dominy Marveux-Garbeau

She gets a TOTAL PASS for looking better and 10 years younger than she did 10 years ago…

      • imakeart

Totally agree. I miss CJ…one of the best female characters in TV. Definitely one of the best on network TV.

    • KikiAvocado

I just give her props- It seems she just ages backwards – girl does not look her age – she works it well!

    • flamingoNW

She looks great! Great make-up, great jacket, great hair.

Public Service Announcement: GO SEE THE WAY WAY BACK. SO FREAKIN’ FUNNY!

    • girliecue

If you would just make Bitter Kittens t-shirts already you would’t have any trouble at all differentiating us from “the nice people”!

    • Gaby

She looks like a realtor in her twenties. So, uh, kudos to her team for keeping it youthful? Her blush could use some blending though.

    • Lizzy

Love the glasses… thoroughly modern CJ.

    • YoungSally

Boys — is this what being married is going to do to your relationship??

    • Imasewsure

When did she become the head of Paramount? Or at least when did she THINK she became the head of Paramount because that’s what I’m seeing here…

    • quiltrx

      LOL love the ‘meeting’!
In the thumbnail, she looks like someone has just paged Dr. Allison Janney.

    • SophieCollier

      She looks like a doctor.

      • Courtney Cne’

I’d take that as a compliment.

    • formerlyAnon

“Lo: Everything would be fine if it was all much more expensive and had designer labels all over it.

T: Tell the nice people at home you’re kidding when you say that.

      Lo: What nice people?”

Sometimes I just can’t fucking believe we don’t have to pay to read this blog.

(I’m gonna have to think of yet *another* person who might conceivably need a copy of your book for their next gift.)

(And Allison Janney is one of my irrational likes so photos of her may have little sartorial substance, but count as a plus for me)

    • MannahattaMamma

Because we still remember CJ from “The West Wing” and because she’s a person of a certain age who dresses like an actual person and not a blow-up porn doll (see JLo, Catherine ZJ, etc), and because she’s probably wearing glasses because…she needs glasses and not to “look smart.” That’s why. I think the cats would agree with me.

    • MoHub

Oh, good! I was wondering whether the jacket and pants were two different whites or whether it was my monitor, but you guys confirmed my first impression. I also think the pants needed to be full length; as they are, they look as if they’re too short rather than deliberately cropped.

    • stubbornthoughts

I feel like she should be checking my vitals and then give me a lollipop.

    • carolie_king

I obviously haven’t been paying attention… When the hell did she get rid of her cute tooth gap? Sad.

    • Danielle L

I can’t get over her hair. Love love love LOVE it.

    • Melanie

I worship her, and I think she looks great. I do wish the pants were a bit more emphatically capri though – this length almost looks like a mistake.

ETA: She also needs to play Aubrey Plaza’s mom in something, STAT. The resemblance is kind of uncanny.

    • ItsDicey

      Adore the nerd glasses.

    • kalisa

I like it. Smart. I could wear that. Plus, CJ Craig was one of the best-written female characters ever on TV. She always gets a pass from me.
