YEA or NAY: Rosario Dawson’s Undercut

Posted on June 28, 2013

Miss Rosario grabs some lunch and all we want to do is talk about her hair.

Rosario Dawson on the set of “The Untitled Chris Rock Project” in New York City.

The dress is cute, but the booties really don’t go with it.

What do the kittens think of the undercut? We generally like that look for the right gal, but we question whether Rosario’s that gal. Let’s be judgmental together. Just this once.

  • Oh, YEA, what the hell.

  • shopgirl716

NO. The look needs to go back to the 80’s, where it belongs.

    • Rhonda Shore

Only a teenager can get away with purposefully having such an ugly hair look…

  • filmcricket

Nay. But then again I don’t think it looks good on anyone, so it’s not a slap against Ms. Dawson in particular.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

I think I’d like it better if the long part was straight. But those booties need to be put away in an attic and never spoken of again.

  • MilaXX

YEA for me, but I’ve seen other pictures of it. Now if you asked me about those boots being paired with that dress, I’d give it a big no.

  • Rand Ortega

What is this? Untitled Chris Rock Project starring Rosario Dawson as Willow Smith? What’s next, “Whip My Hair– The Movie”?
    Thanks…but no.

  • MilaXX

Wait a minute, is homegirl carrying her own person bottle of hot sauce? A woman after my own heart, except the hot sauce brand is wrong.

  • carnush

Would look more chic with her hair straight. The soft waves don’t go with the severity of the look.

    • MilaXX

I’ve seen a few pictures of her since the cut. She switches it up, some days straight, some days curly, I think she even dd a top knot.

      • teensmom99

Top not with this look is the best, I think. A friend of mine has it with a top knot made of small braids and it looks great. In this case, I love the soft waves so much that all I can think was that something happened to her hair and she had to shave that side. Chewing gum?

      • Kent Roby

        I particularly love it straight.

  • Chipster

    Big old NAY.

  • Danielle

Nay. Both sides or none IMHO.

And those boots in this heat? No thanks.

  • marlie

NAY. Such a shame… she has such gorgeous hair.

  • It’s Kimmy

    No ma’am

  • Lori

I know a guy who’s tough but sweet
He’s so fine, he can’t be beat
He’s got everything that I desire
Sets the summer sun on fire

I want candy, I want candy

That’s my way of saying “no” to the haircut. I do want that dress though.

    • Rand Ortega

      Annabella Lwin/Bow Wow Wow shoutout!

  • Emily Smith

So I saw the title and was like “why is Rosario Dawson wearing a dress and punching someone?” and then remember that’s an uppercut and then was even more confused. I’m kind of whatever to that hairstyle now, it’s not very new or shocking anymore. I bet she feels very ventilated though.

  • Um,….Not working for me, nope, not at all.

  • Dawn Sinclair

erm, is she auditioning for Coco in Fame? NO

  • majorbedhead

    No. Hell to the no.

  • JosephLamour

Cassie *brought* this haircut back, so she should live with the consequences alone.

  • Perigee

Yea. I think she is beautiful both with the incredible thick hair and with it shaved in a way that really lets you appreciate her profile. She is onset, so maybe that is the complete explanation. I kind of hope it isn’t. I like to think that not every successful film actress under age 40 is tied to the traditional femininity of long, flowing locks. Without a scrap of evidence to support this, I like to imagine Rosario as the sort of woman brave enough to go against certain pointless beauty rules imposed on actresses.

  • Nancer

I think it’s really cute on her.

  • frannyprof

  • ConnieBV

It makes her look too hard. It’s Jada-ing her out. Nope.

    • Bethany Roullett

OH man, you beat me to it. Maybe she was tired of looking nice and approachable, and wanted to mix in some Jada Smith ‘look at me wrong and I’ll mess you up’ edge.

  • veriance

No, I had this haircut my sophomore year of HS which pretty much guarantees it’s a bad idea.

    • GorgeousThings

Au contraire – it’s a great idea, for sophomore year in HS.
After that it’s a NAY WAY!

  • OrigamiRose

    Nay. Blech.

  • Little_Olive

I was about to jump to Nay, but really, why not. She does have the face to carry it (I tried putting my finder over the long-hair part of the picture)

  • jenno1013

I had to think about it for awhile, but the problem for me is it’s too little of an undercut, just on that one side, to be what it ought. This looks to me like what you’d get if you were shaved for surgery and it had grown out a little — the buzzed area is too small to really work. But more of a buzz wouldn’t work on her either, unless she changed everything else about her style.

  • MzzPants

Yea, although I think she should just commit to the shave. She’s be gorgeous. Now, can we bitch about those boots??

  • Karen Dickerson

I think it’s the combo of the cutesy dress, weird booties, and hair that’s throwing everyone off…I’ve seen other photos of her hair and I think it suits her wonderfully. She has such a striking face so it shows it off quite nicely. But when you have badass hair, the cute sweet girly looks don’t really work as well anymore. Floral dresses that flow in the wind don’t match up too well with edgy hair, unless you have some kickass accessories to give it some more grit. That’s my two cents.
So, YEA on the hair. Nay on the look as a whole. 🙂

  • formerlyAnon

Yea. If she’s feeling it. Hair grows.

Though I think she is not the perfect girl for it. I think that some women can wear it as an all-around style, other women have to dress for it. I think she’s the latter. And by “dress for it” I mean build a whole slightly edgy look around it. Her clothing choices are too eclectic and often too feminine for her to do that.

  • Donna Tabor

Why would anyone wear their hair that way? I’m mystified. It looks as though she’s recovering from some kind of cranial surgery.

  • Occam09

YAY. So hot, and I so want to copy it!

  • Sagecreek

Yes to the dress, no to the hair, WTF to the booties. If ever a dress called for a cute little pair of sandals…

  • sweetestsith

I like the hair overall, but think it would look much better shaved all the way down (or close to it). It looks a little grown out and off here.

Love the dress on her, am totally confused and unenthused by the boots.

  • Zaftiguana

  • andreawey

it seems like so many people are doing this bootie with sundress thing, it just seems wrong somehow, maybe because I live in Maine where we have to wear boots half the year….. and no, the haircut is just not her….

  • CeeQ

    No. On anyone, really.

  • LuisaNL

    Nay. This is just wrong.

  • fringebenefit

    NAY. Never. Ever.

  • teensmom99

I know it’s hard with the hair to talk about anything else, but that is the perfect summertime dress.

  • GillianHolroyd

She’d look stunning if her whole head was shaved that short but this? flashbacks to Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face.

  • TheAmericaness

Ohhhh! When you said “undercut” I originally thought you meant something about the dress and was trying to figure out if I needed to learn another term for dressmaking, etc. Her hair! Thank goodness for the comments! Uh. No. I agree with those who think it would look better straight.

  • judybrowni

    For haircut, dress is cute.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I liked the hair until I realized a huge chunk of it is missing. So that’s a NAY. I think this technique works best when the remaining hair is shorter a la Miley Cyrus. She looks lovely though. Those boots are too much for almost July in New York City…stank boot fer shure.

  • tereliz

Well, the hair is probably super cool for summer, but that doesn’t explain those boots, lol.

IMO, this whole look feels a bit young for her. The dress is fine, but the boots combined with the hair… I think Ro-Daw is better than this. Her RC looks often border on too mature, but this feels too juniors. I’m about her age, so I know it can be hard to balance wanting to look edgy, but not too young. Or wanting to look classy, and looking too mature.

I’m going to vote Yea on the hair because I think she’s working it, but I’m not convinced it’s her “look”.

  • JauntyJohn

Fresh and different and trying something new for her. She’s always been a gal with a bit of an edge, I think this suits her.
And strangely, I don’t even mind the boots. Sometimes sandals on city streets feel like not enough protection for your foot, and the open width at the top of the boot suggests there’s some breathing going on to prevent massive swamp foot. The soft gray works for me with the dress, too. They look like sturdy but stylish footwear for a gal who plans a lot of walking around the city for her day.
Dress is super pretty and great on her.

  • rissa42210

  • Jangle57

I think a haircut like this invites the question, why????? Her hairdresser was watching The Big Bang Theory episode where Penny gives Sheldon a haircut and thought, why not? It just looks dumb to me. Nay.

  • dschubba

    God, I hate booties.

I feel bad for saying this, but that haircut reminds me how young she isn’t. I feel that it’s aging her.

  • There is too much contrast between the two sides of her head. She has beautiful bone structure. I’m curious to see all of her hair cut short, maybe not that short.

  • CheriCPat

Nay. On anyone. But specifically on her too.

  • carolynmo

  • Claudia

It looks really cute in the second picture, but just kinda strange in the rest. I’m a fence sitter…

  • Danielle L

I really dislike this haircut. On anyone.

  • Carleenml

I couldn’t stop staring at her perfect body in that perfect dress with envy. Haircut? huh?

  • kirkyo

    My first reaction? Cute booties!

My reaction after reading the comments? Uh…really?…oops…ok.

  • JP

No. Although hair grows back. That stupid boot with the sundress? That’s the bigger issue to me.

  • Toto Maya

It looks like a shaving accident. I love the part of her hair that isn’t shaved, it looks gorgeous. It’s a pity.

  • ashtangajunkie

Yea. With a face like that, she can do whatever she wants with her hair.

  • alyce1213

Nay. I don’t get the appeal of this haircut on anyone. It’s a bad 18-year-old’s decision.
    And oh yeah, because Anya.

  • stellamaris73

She could rock a close-cropped pixie cut, but this look tries to be two things at once and fails at both.

  • mjude

NAY & please burn the booties, please

  • Alexander Peterhans

  • MarTeaNi

It’s a look I’ve been considering for myself for a while now. I think It’s a pretty good look but I question how high she went with the shave. It looks like she went at or above the crown and it looks more lopsided than edgy.

  • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

I think it looks fantastic on some girls, but I’m really not feeling it on her.

  • another_laura

Going with Nay on the hair. I have quibbles about the booties but that dress is so very great on her!

  • crash1212

On the fence because I just can’t see enough of it. I love the tousled side. ::shrug:: Cutest dress ever.

  • Candigirl1968

This is a look best left to the kids.

  • Andrea Lentz

it makes me think she could pull off shaving her whole head

  • conniemd

On the fence, cuz I hate the look generally, but it looks okay on her. Yea.

  • Jessica Freeman

NAY. I have not like this trend on anyone.

  • Yea, but with a totally different dress. Bitch is FLAWLESS.

  • Nay, nay, no way.

  • NYCRecessionista

Honestly I like her personal style, but I really want to say, girl, that’s not your hairdo …

  • notterriblybitter

No to this haircut on anyone. NO.

  • PrunellaV

YEA. I think she pulls it off. She’s got a great skull.

  • AnaRoW

Nay. I’ve only seen it work well on people who have a LOT of hair. Her hair is neither long nor thick enough.

  • CatherineRhodes

NAY. Unless you’re Dubstep DJ Skrillex, this is a NAY.

  • Just Me

No. No. NOOOO. I would go so far as to say it is just wrong. Not only is her face not right for it in general, but it is a cut that looks like someone “accidentally” drugged her and shaved one side of her hair just to watch her wake up screaming.

  • nannypoo

I hate this haircut on anyone. She looks like she has had brain surgery. If she has, then I apologize. If not, she should either grow it out or shave her whole head.

  • amber.

Yea, because it’s Rosario Dawson & she can do whatever she pleases. Also, it says she’s on set so how do we know if it’s a costume or not? I say yes.

  • Wellworn

Seeing that little buzz cut part, I would love the whole thing to be buzzed because she has the gorgeous bone structure to work that. That wavy romantic shoulder length hair doesn’t go with the buzz though. She could rock that undercut if the long section was another style, more punk or something. It’s not her, it’s the hair.

  • Janet B

I’m sure she could wear a super short haircut, but not this.

  • ErmengardeGreen

Her features are on the strong/masculine side, and the undercut butches her up quite a bit, but to me that’s not bad. I just think that when you’ve taken your head in a butch/futuristic direction like that, it makes sense to be more minimalist and streamlined in your wardrobe. Helmut Lang, Rosario!

  • I don’t know if the undercut works with hair that full and voluminous on the other side. I think it looks better when the rest of the hair is a bit sleeker. As it is it sort of looks like she was wearing a wig that fell askew (not that Rosario’s long hair is anything but glorious, but the proportions are off here, in my eyes).

That said, if I squint and imagine away the curls, I think Rosario would look absolutely amazing with her entire head buzzed – her head shape seems nice and that peach fuzz looks super flattering to her skintone. CONSIDER IT, ROSARIO. You’re already halfway there and the grow-out period for this can’t be that much less awkward than for the full pixie.

  • trisker

YEA. I think she looks cool, in both senses of the word.

  • julnyes

I think she would look great with a completely shaved head or with long hair. So its a No from me because those two looks together don’t work in my opinion.

  • This is a fun idea for summer, but poorly executed. It should say punk, not interrupted during a fire drill.

  • DilettanteDeconstructed

    BIG YAY.

Oh wait, we aren’t discussing her boots? Let me just look at her hea- ohhhh. Oh, no. NO. Just… no.

  • sweet_potato

I normally would like this haircut. I don’t think this one is executed well.

  • GTrain

Nay. It’s a cute look but not on her.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I don’t like it at all, but I’m old and cranky.

  • nope. anya ruined that look for me.

  • VioletFem

YEAH. Its not my favorite kind of haircut, but she’s the kind of lady who can rock this style.

  • phrenk

Yea. I like this style on just about anyone, honestly, for reasons.

  • phrenk

Yea. I like this style on just about anyone, honestly, for reasons.

  • Jonquil

She may have been the right gal when she was younger. I don’t know if anyone over the age of 25 is the right gal.

  • a_liking

honestly, it does look a little awkward, but I can’t really hate. I applaud any woman with the confidence to go for that kind of look.

  • Adriana_Paula

Does no one but me love that bag? The hair, I dunno, I’m not mad at it.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

    c30 c60 c90 NO!

  • I think it looks great. I also know how much thick hair sucks in the summertime, and this looks so relaxed! Go for it, girl! A lot of people are quick to shit on this hairstyle, but on the right gal I think it’s pretty badass. Sadly, it has become super popular over the past few years so I think we’re seeing too much of it, but I’d prefer this over the same god damned long flowing loose curls on every starlet ANY DAY. Rosario is definitely the chick to say fuck you to conventions of femininity.

  • AnnPopovic

I love it; she has a strong face and on the side where it’s shaved she is really striking! It really accents just how shockingly interesting and beautiful her face IS.

    • AnnPopovic

(but no no no on the booties)

  • Susan Velazquez

Nay. I’ve seen good undercuts on women with long hair and this just looks like Rosario was about to shave her heads but changed her mind halfway.

  • quiltrx

NAY. It is too Anya-reminiscent and who wants to think about THAT anymore. Plus it’s a little silly.
BUT…from what I see of the shaved side and her bone structure, she should go the full Annie Lennox for a while! And that gives an excuse for an amazing wig collection.

  • ankali

NAY. Not the gal. Also, don’t like the dress on its own or with the booties, and wonder why this gorgeous woman cannot seem to dress herself.

  • Contralto

  • rougeort

I don’t know… I think it’s too harsh on her because she has softer angles in her face, but on the right girl this look works. NAY for her, but I don’t 100% hate it.

  • lesmaha

  • Lisa_Co

    Absolutely NAY.

  • demidaemon

NAY oon the hair and the shoes. Shoes are ugly; haircut just doesn’t seem to “fit” her.

  • somebody blonde

Yeah, I don’t think it really suits her. It makes her look older, for some reason. It’s not horrible, but she looked SO much better before.

  • fursa_saida

This makes me so sad, because I LOVE undercuts and I love her, but no. Not for her. Looking at the shaved side just makes me wish she’d shave her whole head, because she’d look rad. (Look at her adorable hairline!)

  • Sara Padilla

Yea from me. I hate that there’s supposed to be a time in your life where you have to stop trying things with your hair. I cry bs. And as to the booties, I don’t like ’em myself, but NYC streets are gross and I get wanting to cover things up for their protection.

  • jmorino08

It’s called an undercut? Sure, I guess. I mean “just shave half of my head” is kind of wordy, but what’s with the “under” other than her scalp?

  • ItsDicey

Nay. Conventional, soft waves and an undercut don’t belong on the same head. Dual personalities.

  • Elleachaudaucul

I like a good undercut, but this one is not for her. (*sotto voice* She could have pulled it off magnificently when she was Miley Cyrus’s age . . . . )

  • clairellis

  • almondemy

honestly, the shaved side is way cuter than the PTA mom curls.

  • lilazander

NAY! Besides isn’t the cut already? I haven’t been in the States for the past year, but in Europe it is soo last season. Nevertheless, SHE looks quite odd in it.

  • paginatrix

At least three days every summer, I want to cut my hair like that.
    Hot weather makes me crazy.

  • drdarke

Since it’s probably for her role, I guess we’ll have to live with it.

    On her own? Hell, NAY!

  • MartyBellerMask

15-20 years ago, yes. Now, NO.

  • eight_of_nine

YEA! I love that hairstyle. I would try it myself if I didn’t need to have a conservative appearance for my job (and if my hair weren’t so thin).

  • BuffaloBarbara

Don’t like that look on guys or gals.

  • Cathy S

I like it. But mostly I want her dress.

  • Badriya Al-Badi’a

Yes–she has the features to carry it off.

  • Don’t like the undercut, and those booties make me weep. Love the dress.

  • Tracy_Flick

    Stank boot.

  • seelebrennt

  • Noelle

  • librarygrrl64

Sorry, I can’t get past how she ruined a cute dress with out-of-season boots and bag.

  • Jillybean

    Oh god no. Just no.

  • Tracy Walker

I think RoDawg should be brave and cut the whole of it off. Wowza that bone structure!

  • mhlmh

I bet she would look awesome bald, though.

  • Lucas

It’s okay, it is a kinda fun/rebellious look, which suits her. Not what I would call glamorous but, just for funsies, sure, I like it on her.

  • Kent Roby

I give her a “Yea”. Even though she did it for a role (the latest Sin City), I think it’s fun for a while. At least it’s not the tired-beyond-belief still-ubiquitous ombrè or weird color. Incidentally, back in the day her mom had a full-on mohawk; so I love that bit of connection.

  • Saturnine

    You’re checking that we’re still awake in class, aren’t you . . .
