WERQ: Kiernan Shipka in MaxMara

Posted on June 13, 2013

She’s graduated from the BabyWERQ to the grownup version. Mainly because she’s starting to pull off grownup looks like a master:

Kiernan Shipka attends Women In Film cocktail party in Beverly Hills, California in a Max Mara black and white silk sleeveless top with a Max Mara green Silk skirt.

And somehow, she never looks precocious, like she’s trying too hard, or too mature, somehow.

We guarantee there are ladies two and three times her age coveting that outfit right now. And why not? It’s really cute. You WERQ your big girl skirt, girl! Snaps of CHICNESS.

She’s already wearing clothes better than the entire cast of Girls.

    • WendyD

    • Rhonda Shore

That’s setting the bar rather low!

    • P M

Can I just say that I love your avatar pic? ^5 for Siskel and Ebert!

  • carnush

I just love that she’s always smiling. That goes such a long way.

    • Tamara Hogan

And a natural smile! No duck lips or trout pout. You go, gurl.

    • alyce1213

And it’s authentic. You just know she’s glad to be where she is. So lovely.

  • I shudder to consider the level of her fierce fabulosity by the time she is 30.

    • It is entirely possible that Kiernan Shipka is working towards a level of fierce fabulosity that the world has never seen or experienced before. 🙂

My curiosity about whether someone is styling her or if she is somehow a Fashion Ninja among her other talents cannot be described. I want to know. I need to know. Does anyone know?

      • I saw a style-centric interview with her (a video on this site, actually), and she is quite the fashionista. She may have a stylist, but she’s got some formidable chops of her own also.

      • Domo_Konnichiwa

According to several articles, she does not have a stylist. Clothes are given to her in the same way as other celebrities, but she picks what she likes and wears it as she feels fit.

        • ItsDicey

That’s so fabulous, and I hope it’s true.

          • Domo_Konnichiwa

I hope so, too! I kinda wish she’d come out with a style how-to book or something.

    • colleenjanel

I hope we don’t see a premature burnout of fabulosity! Hopefully she can keep this up long-term!

    • Tatiana Luján

I foresee a weird period, like the one Emma Watson is going through right now.

      • TheAmericaness

The weird period is ok and somewhat expected especially from child stars who 9 times out of 10 hit the: “oh my god I was given too much too fast and I was never allowed to rebel so I’m going to totally rebel and do my best to shock everyone” and we all hope they don’t go down some drug route they can’t get out of. Here’s to her being the 1 out of 10 because she really seems to have a lot going for her if she’s this capable at this age.

        • calbear97

        • Tatiana Luján

I only mean a weird period in clothes.

          • TheAmericaness

So do I, really. Remember Drew Barrymore’s 90’s Flower Child period? *Shudder*

Edit: Plus, what I think they may really be rebelling against – child stars, that is, are whatever restrictions and choices mom and dad have been making for them since they are the ones that basically made the choice to put them in show business since they were babies and make all clothing and public appearance choices with their managers. They, the kids, may or may not have anything to do with it until they are of age.

        • AnaRoW

If by 9 out of 10, you mean 1 out of 10, then I agree. The fact is the vast majority of child stars grow up just fine. It’s just that turning out normal doesn’t make the front page news.

    • Lanus

Queen Helen needs to declare her the Heiress to the Throne of Fanfuckingtastica

    • MK03

She will be so blindingly fierce, they’ll have to hand out sunglasses to everyone before she enters the room.

  • aykhan

Yep, I covet the top especially! She looks fantastic.

  • nannypoo

    Impeccable, of course.

  • MilaXX

Diana Argon could wear this exact look and not look granny or twee. She needs to call Kiernan’s stylist. STAT

    • chowwander

Or just call Kiernan. (Can you imagine?)

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Clearly someone has made sure she dresses like a real person versus a little slutty starlet. This kid has a protective and (gasp!) normal parents hanging about, I’d say. And a really good stylist. Thank GOD.

    • Glammie

I’ve read that her parents are fairly protective. She does publicity, but I’ve noticed that she mostly disappears between seasons of Mad Men. Her family did move to LA for her career when she was six, which is always a little dicey to me, but so far, so good. Some kid actors do turn out okay–Natalie Portman, Jodie Foster. Even Brooke Shields–not much of an actress, but seems like a decent human being. So fingers crossed.

      • random_poster

I think it helps that none of them came from the wonderful world of Disney as it stands today. I know that not all the Disney kids go the LiLo route, but that camp seems to breed a lot of the bad news crowd.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I love that the skirt is not too short and the top is not low cut. Perfectly proportioned.

    • kimmeister

Although we can’t see the heels, they seem to be an age appropriate height as well.

  • l_c_ann

A bit too young to be attending cocktail parties since she can’t drink legally.

But she’d rule the room at any summer party for folks in her age group.

    • czarina

      Kiernan, “Shirley Temple, straight up”

  • shirab

Certain teenage girls of my acquaintance, THIS is how you deploy makeup. No spackle, no raccoon eyes. Please take note.

  • Christine Hart

She is so good, it makes me wonder how so many others are so bad.

  • AlisonS

Yup. I covet her outfit. So much top to toe!

  • “starting to”? girlfriend has been schooling them other bitches from the moment she fell out of her mothers vag.

  • decormaven

Aww, feelings of pride and she’s not even my kid! Thank you for showing us all how it’s done, miss.

  • colleenjanel

I ADORE this child, and anxiously await every single red carpet appearance because I know we will not be disappointed. My only quibble is that if she’s going to be coloring her hair, she’s going to need to start adjusting those brows accordingly. It’s easier to get away with the discrepancy as a child, but if she’s going to be pulling off adult looks, some attention may need to be paid north of her lids.

    • netdivaweb

100% agreement. That’s the *only* thing that stuck out to me.

    • katchwa

A bushy brow is the best!! Only some light pencilling and a tiny brush as far as I’m concernd.

      • colleenjanel

It’s not the bushiness that bothers me. It’s the color. It’s too starkly different from her hair color.

      • Rhonda Shore

Her brows are fine, in fact it’s precisely this kind of thing that makes her look so refreshing!

      • Lanus

I agree. She and her should-be-cast-as-big-sister Emma Watson are so refreshing with their normal looking brows!

    • Glammie

Yeah, she got carried away on the peroxide–or rather her stylist did. I think they’ve always highlighted her hair a bit too make her more Betty like, but all-out blonde isn’t a great look for her.

But, hey, maybe Elisabeth Moss talked her into it.

    • quitasarah

Gotta say, I’m digging her brows. Might not look “natural” but looks FAB!

    • JasmineAM

I’ve always thought her hair color was natural. I’ve seen a lot of blonde/light brown girls with naturally dark brows.

      • shorty j

Same. Hell, I’m a natural redhead with dark brown eyebrows. NOBODY believes that I don’t dye my hair.

    • Pegala

The color could be natural. My daughter still had dark blond hair at that age and equally dark brows to Kiernan’s. D’s hair darkened closer to her brow color as she matured.

  • Judy_J

She’s definitely got a great sense of style. She always seems to knock it outta the park.

  • alyce1213

Lovely and effortless. Ooh, skirts and blouses are back.

    • conniemd

I hope so. So easy to mix and match and increase your wardrobe on a limited budget.

  • I’m old enough to be her mother, but I covet her entire outfit AND her eyebrows.

    • katchwa

YES! I hope no one tries to make her fuck with the brows.

  • TLJezebel

She’s such a good little actress, I can’t wait to see what she wears for her first Oscar nomination.

  • Sara__B

I don’t watch Mad Men, but I do get a great deal of enjoyment watching Miss Shipka put the adult celebrities to shame on the red carpets. I look forward to following her as she matures.

  • EricaVee

She looks so freakishly like a perfect mix of January Jones and Jon Hamm sometimes that it’s kind of hard for me to believe she isn’t actually their child. Love the overall look and especially the light makeup (love her thick brows!).

  • TheDivineMissAnn

  • snarkykitten

She looks better than any other celeb posted today

  • AnnaleighBelle

She is so lovely and has so much potential, I hope she’s okay. Child stardom gives me the heeby jeebies.

    • alyce1213

I worry for her too, but sometimes it works out okay (e.g., Neil Patrick Harris, Jodie Foster, and the great Shirley Temple). I hope she is really as grounded and unaffected by the hoopla as she appears to be. Parenting is key.

  • AnnaleighBelle

It’s uncanny how much she looks like Don and Betty…

  • Contralto

    She’s adorable.

  • Fred Vaughn

    She’s impressive on the RC, I say…

  • How *does* she always manage to strike the right balance between her age and her options? It’s amazing. Never too twee, never too mature, never inappropriate.

  • Perditax

Feel the need to congratulate her on her graduation! It’s well deserved.

  • Vainte

    Fan Bingbing’s Mini Me.

  • and the shoes! on those adorable tiny feet! sigh….

  • ItsDicey

The look is simple, chic and seemingly effortless. Brava, dahling! I am envious.

  • chowwander

    Doll. Full stop.

  • Jessica Wyatt

Has the girl ever had a non-WERQ? Ya’ll might start thinking about giving her her own dedicated post. Like, “Kiernan Shipka pulls a Kiernan Shipka.”

  • quiltrx

Super cute! AND she can already pick shoes better than most older ladystars!

  • akprincess72

I love that she is still age appropriate AND well-dressed. It is a doable thing!

  • the_valkyrie

Max Mara really suits her. She always looks her best when she’s wearing that brand.

  • marlie

    That’s adorable. I can’t believe I’m jealous of a teenager’s clothes.

  • mhleta

Classy as hell. Snaps to her parents for raising a lovely young lady.

  • SignLadyB

And it appears she has lightened her hair–again attractively and appropriately!

  • lobsterlen

AND!!! She is not standing there pigeon toed like a self conscious 12 year old like so many of the adult ladystars. I am looking at you, Gwyneth.

  • Ashley Alvarez

I need the deets on those shoes!

  • Chickadeep

I want there to be a show where Kiernan Shipka and Tim Gunn team up to fight crimes against fashion.

    • That would be the sassiest “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” reboot in history.

      • Chickadeep

::: gasp! ::: Oh TV Gods, please make it so.

  • Democracy Diva

I think now was the perfect time to graduate her from BabyWerq to WERQ. Can’t put my finger on why, but for both Sally and Kiernan, this feels like her bridge into fabulous grown-up-ness.

  • Kate Kealey

Can someone identify the maker of her shoes? I need to find them. They would be ideal paired with the bridesmaid dress I’m doning this summer.

  • LibrarianLizy

I need that outfit almost as much as I need her eyebrows.

  • Eric Stott

I like how the bodice pattern gives her bust some contours without making her tool too mature.

  • LauraAgain

Incredibly appropriate and tasteful for a young lady. I wish all tweens would emulate her style, rather than looking like little prostitutes.

  • CeeRich

She Looks chic, age appropriate and *gasp* comfortable in her clothing. *snaps of approval*

  • Emily Wilkerson

I am 20 years old I am unashamed to say that Kiernan Shipka has become one of my style icons. Love this look!
