Sofia Vergara in Hervé L. Leroux

Posted on June 05, 2013

We’re always really hard on Sofia because she has just one mode, “Va-va-voom,” and after awhile that just gets boring and irritiating to a couple of fashion queens, immune to the charms of her babyheads or ass-splitting dresses.

‘Modern Family’ star Sofia Vergara attends the 2013 CFDA Fashion Awards at Lincoln Center in New York City in a Hervé L. Leroux gown accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz emerald drop earrings, diamond and emerald necklace and two diamond hand pieces.

But we’ll give her a little credit here; thats a gorgeous dress on her. Yes, it’s tight, but hey, at least it’s not a mermaid skirt. She went way overboard on the jewelry, though. The hand jewelry on both hands is a bit much and the necklace looks like something from a Gypsy Rose Lee act.

And this is us being nice.

But really, she looks pretty. Even these two tired queens can admit that.

That’s a gorgeous color. I would have gone without the hand jewels, but otherwise, she looks very pretty.

    • 3boysful

Who knew there was such a thing as “hand pieces”?

      • marlie

It’s not a new concept; they’re prevalent in a lot of other cultures, but in this case, they’re a bit superfluous.

      • MK03

They’re commonly known by the very un-PC name “slave bracelets.”

  • andreawey

the color is spectacular on her!

  • PastryGoddess

I’m a sucker for major jewelry, so I’m no help to you here.

I think she looks great, at least she wears things that flatter her shape rather than add odd angles where they don’t belong.

    • RebeccaKW

Same here. Those magazine ads, where the model wear 7 watches or 4 big diamonds on each finger…I always want to copy it. I know it looks crazy, but I so want that to be in style.

    • SylviaFowler

Ditto. Christina Hendricks could learn several lessons from Sofia (and my retinas would appreciate it if she did).

  • blairdawn

Color looks amazing on her! I agree on less jewelry- the necklace especially is too much, and doesn’t work with the neck line. In fact, it’s making a nice outline around her cleavage, which I’m sure was the point.

    • drdarke

Anybody remember that DICK VAN DYKE SHOW episode where Rob buys Laura a replica of the necklace The Mad Empress Carlotta owned – and Laura hates it, and ultimately is able to fob it off on Rob’s mother (who inexplicably loves it as much as Rob does)?

Looks like Sofia Vergara picked it up in the Estate Sale for Rob’s parents….

  • Lesley

that color looks amazing on her! i’m not gonna lie there’s a piece of me that’s kinda loving the hand jewelry – i’m sure i stand alone on that. however, that necklace is just wayy too much, no need for a necklace with this dress.

    • MilaXX

I’ve been looking at pieces like that on etsy. That and hinged knuckle rings.

      • Lesley

ahh so i don’t stand alone!

    • Sobaika

      No, they’re gorgeous.

  • lexilexi

I think she’s scared to put her hair up, but it would have shown off the necklace nicely.

    • H2olovngrl

I think you may be right. The one wrong note for me. Seems like she could use a good hot oil treatment, too.

  • She can hand over that necklace right now, and everything will be forgiven.
    Love me some emeralds.

    • ballerinawithagun

      More emeralds, more, more!!!

  • MsALVA

I think she was asked to wear the jewelry as some sort of promotion for the event? Colombian emeralds for the Colombian actress. I think the outfit was styled around the jewelry rather than the other way around.

    • conniemd

Actually I’m guessing the Emeralds are set around Swarovski crystals and not diamonds and she was asked to wear it to display the crystals.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I actually think this is great. I think the detail on the hips balances out her bust size. It looks a lot better on her than on the mannequin.

  • StrandedFashionista

Stunning Dress. Too much jewelry. Frankly, I think the necklace is too much for what she’s got going on.

  • Vickiefantastico

Personally I love the jewelry. I’ve gotten so tired of bare necks, ears, and arms on the red carpet.

  • Caitlin O’Brien

I don’t think she’s ever looked better… besides that coral Vera Wang gown at the Emmy’s?…. I can’t remember the event but this might be a personal best.

  • MilaXX

I’m sure the offer was hard to pass up, but I think the necklace is a bit much. Ditto the hand jewelry. One would have been enough.

  • Chris

She’s taken a page from the late 60’s early 70’s Liz Taylor fashion book. Extreme cleavage in a deep V dress with about a million dollars worth of jewels around your neck- preferably with large teardrop jewels to dangle down and draw attention to the aforementioned cleavage.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I really do get tired of her because of the constant mermaid dresses in red. But this is really pretty! No mermaid skirt, and I love that shade of green on her!

  • It’s so “Of course,” but she does look pretty all the same.

    • marlie

She’s almost always an “of course,” but at least she generally looks nice.

  • MaggieMae

THAT is her dress. Yes, overboard on the jewelry.

  • ryenerman

What I appreciate about her is that sure she is va-va-vooming, but her clothing almost always is properly fitted. It’s tight, but not too tight. There’s usually not weird gaping or grabbing or squeezing of things in odd places. Evidently this is harder to do than one might think – or at least it seems to be given the vast amounts of evidence seen here over the years.

    • shirab

It would be great if she would be kind enough to invite Christina Hendricks over for a chat with her and her stylist/tailor/posse.

  • Tatiana Luján

I love the necklace. Wish she’d worn it a bit looser, so it didn’t chop her neck in half.
That green is definitely her color.

  • AlisonS

Apparently I’m in the minority thinking that the dress could go but I LOVE the jewelry. Well, at least the necklace and the earrings. If the dress had been black and her hair sleek and straight and pushed off her shoulders it would be a WERK from me.

  • Ozski

Perfectly stunning and I know no one is looking at her eyebrows, ever but I think she needs to stop filling them in with so much pencil. That’s all.

    • Tatiana Luján

      I agree.

    • Kimberlini

I say too much pencil and overdone lips.

  • julnyes

None of the jewelry works in my opinion, but she looks amazing in that dress.

  • JMB_edits

She’s not bad, she’s just drawn that way! (name that quote – paraphrase – from the past)

What I mean is, how else would she dress, go with what ya got! 😉

    • MoHub

Definitely a Jessica Rabbit look, but it suits her.

      • akprincess72

It needs some Jessica Rabbit/Veronica Lake hair!

    • ballerinawithagun

      Jessica Rabbit.

Women torture and maim themselves to look like that, she’s gotta use it.

  • Dagney

Perfection. Love the dress. Love the jewelry. Yes, it’s a lot, and I think she is rocking everyone of those gems. The makeup is flawless.

  • crash1212

She has beautiful hands and I love those is-it-a-ring-is-it-a-bracelet-IT’S-BOTH thingies, but one would’ve been sufficient. I think she looks beautiful, but I wish she’d done something else with her hair.

  • GTrain

Beautiful dress and also I’m happy she stepped away for the mermaid style for a minute.

  • Everyone else at this event looked weird because of the backdrop. She’s lucky (or smart) that her dress looks amazing against the red.

    • marlie

Those really gaudy colored or printed backdrops do a disservice to everyone on the step-and-repeat.

  • Janet B

She looks amazing, too many jewels, but I don’t care (today),

  • Anniebet

The over the top jewelry? She’s not known for subtlety, so why not load it on? Everything about her is flat out jaw- droppingly amazing, if bordering on a caricature.

About that backdrop – it must have reflective qualities, ’cause practically everyone we’ve seen from the event seemed to have orange skin and hair.

Sorry, the nationalism just popped out.

  • mmebam

I’m okay with being the only one who likes the necklace.

  • Mona_Visa

Girl can wear a necklace! I love it. Every jewelry-pusher on the planet is probably calling her agent today.

  • conniemd

I kinda love the necklace. I agree with the poster who said she is channeling Liz Taylor with it. Love the dress too. She looks fab.

  • l_c_ann

If they are real, don’t hide them with your hair.

I’m talking about the emeralds, of course.

  • Virginie

With a body like that though you really look best in form fitting clothes. She’s dressing to suit her shape.

  • Nancer

So ok, maybe two bracelets (wristlets? Fingerlets? Whatevs.) is a bit much, but I am SO happy to see beautiful jewelry on someone! I am tired of all these starlets going out without any at all – if you have your hair in a severe pony, for heavens sake throw on some earrings! Give us a little sparkle, for crying out loud. It’s not hard to do, and it adds so much to any look.

  • quiltrx

She’s quite an “of course” fashion type for me. She never mixes it up or takes a risk.

    • demidaemon

True, but she rarely fucks it up either. It’s hard to please the increasingly particular BK masses.

  • Julie Chase

She sometimes borders on tacky, but when you get down to it she just always looks gorgeous. Maybe not as stylish as some, but the lady turns heads.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

I kinda like the necklace! Dress looks AMAZING on her.

  • She does look pretty. I like her hair with a middle part.

  • Sunraya

I dont know, the dress is elegant on the form, and veers into not elegant on her. Too, too much!

  • Sunraya

In the 70s, we used to call those bracelets “slave bracelets.” I used to have a bunch of them.

  • Jasper Peng

She looks like the spokesperson for Pantone’s color of the year, which is to say, gorgeous.

  • Heather

Why did I think she was preggers?

  • That’s a lot of emeralds. I hope her escort is a law enforcement person because that necklace is worth many many $$$$$$$.

  • nannypoo

This is maybe the most subdued and the prettiest I’ve ever seen her look.

  • Julie

    baby heads!!!

  • JP

It’s like an understated version of her usual look — I hope she realizes how much this works for her.

  • bertkeeter

    Bang…looks amazing!

  • clairellis

She’s stunning. Emerald is her color.

  • Contralto

Dress looks as though it just came off the rack at David’s Bridal.

  • Imasewsure

Love the dress and don’t even dislike the huge jewels since they balance out or at least distract from all the rest that she has going on up top. Plus she’s over the top so why not the styling too.

  • call me tacky, but i love everything about this look, except possibly that it’s on her. for one, green is my signature color, and i love the serpentine lines of the dress. and you can say that necklace is too much, but if i had a chance to wear that many carats of emeralds and diamonds around my neck, i would definitely go for it.

    • murt

Same here – to me all the jewellery – plus the tightness of the dress – is over the top in a good way

  • akprincess72

She’s becoming an ‘of course’… I would LOVE to see her with a side part, modern or mid-century/Veronica Lake, either would be stunning.

  • lilyvonschtupp

    F- the dress!

The jewelry! The emeralds! The DIAMONDS!

    I’m dying, here!

  • oh, va-va-WOAH. this is 100% her, and its perfection.

  • shelley514

Gorgeous. But she ALWAYS looks the same. And with a body like hers, she could rock all kinds of interesting looks and be stunning.

  • EEKstl

It really is working here, but I wish she’d only worn the necklace and no other jewelry.

  • librarygrrl64

I agree re: gown and jewelry.
