Maggie Gyllenhaal in Chloé on “Good Morning America”

Posted on June 28, 2013

With each subsequent high-fashion attempt, we’re finding it just a tiny bit harder to cheer. But cheer we will, because despite our problems with this look, it’s head-turning as hell.

Maggie Gyllenhaal makes an appearance on “Good Morning America” to talk about her new movie “White House Down” in New York City in a Chloé top and skirt paired with a Carven clutch and Yves Saint Laurent sandals.

Chloé Pre-Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Nadja Bender

It’s just that the top and the skirt really shouldn’t be paired on a non-model person. The shape is just way too hard to pull off. Besides, we don’t think they look all that nice together on anyone. The colors flat-out clash and even though they’re from the same collection, they feel stylistically too far apart. Sure, you could argue it’s a juxtaposition thing, but for us, it’s not working. And it’s made worse by the shoes and bag, both of which are nice but neither of which go with the rest of the look.

In other words, we don’t think any item in this look should be paired with any other item in this look. But we do love that skirt, we have to say. And we’re still mildly appreciative that she’s going high end and taking risks for her public appearances.

She looks like David Byrne in his big suit. Awesome for a Talking Heads show, not so great for everyday life.

    • CrazyAuntie

      My EXACT thought!!

    • drdarke

“Hi, Kids! I’m Miss Maggie! Today we’re going to learn about sharing, and caring – and singing clapping songs!”

OMFG, is that unfortunate – I can’t agree at all, because “high fashion” doesn’t matter if it’s sucky high fashion. And that – is sucky high fashion at its worst.

  • f_yeah_marie

By head turning, do you mean turning your head and then saying, “What the fuck is she wearing?”

  • marishka1

    No. No. No. Just…no.

  • nannypoo

When I saw the first picture I was reminded of Zosia Mamet and her hideous dress from a recent red carpet and thought that an even bigger mistake had been made here by pairing it with that odd skirt. I was surprised to see that the designer made the same mistake. Why, oh why, don’t they all listen to us before they send this dreck down the runway? Anyway, back to Maggie, the only thing that works is her face, which looks happy and adorable. I’m not exactly sick of her hair, but it is beginning to remind me of a shower cap.

    • Daisy Walker

Things could be worse–Zosia would have simply worn this top alone and called it a dress.

      • demidaemon

Indeed. And I’m sure we would definitely be seeing her underpants then, if she wears them.

  • Dreamwr8tr

This is an excellent dress for a thin woman who’s trying to announce she’s pregnant by looking like she’s trying to hide it. Or create rumors that she’s pregnant. :p

Other women go with goddess dresses! Maggie Gyllenhall goes with square dresses that look too big!

  • MartyBellerMask

She looks like a paper doll. And not in a good way.

  • In_Stitches

The shapes just dont’ work together. That top, like Hayden’s from yesterday, needs something sleek and body con on bottom like a pair of slim black pants or a pencil skirt. The skirts the same; maybe a blazer and a tank would give enough sleekness to counterbalance it’s loosey weight.

    • cowper

Yes, when I saw the top I thought, “It would be so chic with black pants.”

  • Daisy Walker

Why do both the top and skirt have to be so w-i-d-e?

  • majorbedhead

Those sandals would go great with jeans. That skirt shape is tough if you aren’t completely devoid of hips and that top makes her look boxy, which she definitely isn’t. But she sure looks happy, which is a definite plus.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I will stand in the wilderness by myself and say “Brava, Maggie” I really dig how quirky, and sweet it is.

    • Frida

I agree! I actually really like the fact that she often opts for quirky shapes and styles that don’t hug every curve in her body. This looks clean and chic and frankly like something you could put together from a trip to Zara…

    • MikeW_Vegas

I will agree with you.. this is LIGHT YEARS ahead of “Maggie the Librarian” or “Maggie the Homeless Bag Woman” that we’ve seen lately.

      • AnneElliot

As a librarian (well, almost) I take umbrage. We don’t dress that badly anymore.

    • Just Me

It is quirky and sweet and does seem to suit her…even if it is a WTF? outfit.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

It finally hit me, I couldn’t place it this morning, TOYS. With Robin Williams and Joan Cusack. Weirdly sweet movie and this dress reminds me so much of the Joan’s character. Her cloths were oddly stiff and doll like.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

OMG Perfect! That’s the reference I was looking for to give it context. Thanks!!!

  • crash1212

If this mess hung on her like it does the model, it wouldn’t be SO unflattering. Makes me confused, because Maggie is a slip of a thing…it’s almost like they went up a couple of sizes and/or put stiffener in the skirt. Weird.

  • veleri

I like the skirt, and her brother.
    just sayin’.

    however, she always looks adorable.

  • Nancer

Sorry, guys, I just can’t – with ANY of this. Ok, maybe the bag and shoes are ok, but that top is uggo. And so is the skirt.

  • Lesley

this is one of those runway not real life looks.but regardless how shapeless this outfit is those shoes are just plain WRONG.

  • TheAmericaness

It looks like she went into her closet with the lights out and got dressed. Then you say: Hey! Nice stuff in your closet, but OY!

  • RebeccaKW

I hate the shoulder horns. The skirt is meh…I like it on the model, but it’s too voluminous on MG. I like the shoes, just not here.

  • rage_on_the_page

Yeah, my biggest problem was the shoes. I guess the 2 pieces aren’t really *made* to go together on her body, but I think it’s an adorable look. The shoes just look like she forgot to change out of her flip-flops before leaving the house.

    • Fordzo

I can’t decide which are worse: Maggie’s sandals or the model’s boots. I hates them both.

      • rage_on_the_page

Right? I scrolled to get an idea of a better shoe for the outfit and was very not impressed.

  • Le_Sigh

I think this would take a Cate to pull this off.

  • Maluca

    Yeah, it’s a head-turner of a look, but not in a good way…

  • Terry

That top with a pair of slim pants or capris, then some bold jewelry, would have been fabulous. Or that skirt with a less boxy top. Just not the two together.

  • frannyprof

Maternity wear. No. Did anyone else see her on _The Daily Show_? She look great.

  • carnush

Needs a white stiletto pump and a different bag. It’s cute otherwise. Quirky cute in a Maggie kind of way.

  • MandyM

Love the skirt! I think a gauzy white blouse would have saved it in spite of the shoes and bag.

  • joancarol

I know it’s cray cray, but I kind of love it.. Except for the barfy shoes.

  • Ann VerWiebe

Those sandals look just like the Bare Traps I had in high school. They really are way too ’80s retro for me.

  • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com heartbot

Her hair and make-up look great, and she’s wearing a bra. We can all agree these are major improvements, right?

  • MoHub

It’s just all. so. wrong. In fact, for me, the shoes are the least problematic part of the outfit.

  • Sagecreek

Oh, no. Makes her look broad as a barn.

  • Tatiana Luján

The shirt may work with a pair of skinny jeans.
I think I get what they were going for in theory: “lets create an A line dress with a top and a skirt!”. Unfortunately, it didn’t work.

  • JeWawa

I hate her the way you hate Paltrow.

  • wonderdivaEtsy

I love the next-to-last photo of her, where she is smiling and acting like a normal person she looks so cute! Sometime I think red carpet posing is more unflattering than just behaving like a real person.

The outfit is too boxy, and I’m not sure it even looked that good on the model, which is why they photographed it at the angle that they did.

  • MilaXX

I was hoping this would get featured on the blog, but I’m disappointed with the full look. I will say this; sitting down during the interview this looked great. I’m willing to give this a pass because even though the shape is wrong for her, the hair & makeup are still good, and the clothes continue to show an attempt at fashion.

  • Belvane

    Betty Draper maternity outfit.

  • anotherkate

Yeah, that boxy silhouette is really tough for those who aren’t 6 feet tall and absurdly willowy. Would LOVE that top with some skinny pants, though!

  • PastryGoddess

Hmmm how to say this nicely? Maggie honey. That silhouette does your body NO favors. Be a dear and never do this again

  • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

I really like her hair and makeup for this run

  • Jessica Freeman

This week with Maggie it was 2 giant steps forward and one tiny step back. I hate all of the pieces together, individually they do better on their own.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Maggie, I adore you, you know I do, but you are fucking up my Sausage Friday. Show yourself out dear. Buh-bye. Love you, mean it. Call me.

  • Heather

She also seems like an odd pairing with Good Morning America.

    • demidaemon

Lately, I think GMA is a bad pairing for everyone.

  • poggi

She looks young and fresh, which is a good direction for her. Also I like the idea of playing with shape, but the skirt is too full on her compared to the model or too stiff or maybe too long. In the end it doesn’t do her figure any favors, but luckily her figure doesn’t really need too many favors so she ends up looking okay. I, on the other hand, would be right to run far, far away from anything like this.

  • Janet B

    Nice try.
The shoes and bag are annoying me.

  • ashtangajunkie

I wish she had worn that top with some cute skinny cropped pants. I like that top on her a lot. Or the skirt with a fitted top. Love the bag, but not with her current outfit.

  • marlie

I wish the skirt wasn’t so voluminous on her. I like it better the way that it hangs on the model.

  • bertkeeter

Without the totally wrong shoes and bag…this look reaches back to a vintage Mia Farrow vibe!

  • Jaeda Laurez

Girl, what? No. She looks like Alice in Wonderland once she ate the cake. Everything is out of proportion and clashing.

  • Little_Olive

That hair is giving her sort of a mouse-y face. She needs some pulling back.

The outfit is terrible, mostly -not exclusively- on account of the shoes and bag.

  • appliquer

Mmmm, no. Why is it designers think that stuff like this looks good? Takes me back to the childhood story of the Emperor and his new clothes.

  • JP

It would be “OMG my eyes!” if the damn things were nipped in to show her shape. As it is, she looks like she donned a schmatta to walk out to the hotel pool in.

  • Rhonda Shore

She does look good despite the noted flaws…i’d have liked earrings, something classic like hoops.

  • VictoriaDiNardo

Well I like it – I love her – and I think this is her in that odd-fashion Marni kind of way. It would be more interesting with better accessories, fun, light-weight shoes and bag, a strong necklace, but I would love to own that skirt – with a little white tank the perfect summer piece.

  • Qitkat

Big applause to Maggie for going outside her comfort zone. The skirt is really cute and different, but the A-line just isn’t working here, not flattering. Lucky woman has a slender waist and has a body that needs to have it emphasized. I don’t like it on the model either. Disconnect between the two pieces, like screechy chalk on a board.

  • Lizzy

I can’t imagine a single soul that dress would look good on…..

  • formerlyAnon

Nice try, but no. These look like unrelated garments and give her the shape of an Easter egg. BUT. She’s looked much worse. There is a certain polish here that she usually lacks.

  • Trisha26

This is impossibly horrible and proves that duplicating a runway look isn’t a guarantee of success. At least she didn’t wear the boots. That top looks like an even shorter version of Zosia Mamet’s dentist smock from earlier this week. Only in blush.

  • irielle

She’s a beautiful woman, but the shape of the dress screams pregnancy to me.

    • RedRaven617

Agree. She looks like a triangle.

  • sekushinonyanko

Well on the plus side, from the neck up it’s all working like gangbusters.

  • jmorino08

My eyes!!! My eyes!!! That is awful! And not at all flattering to either her figure or her coloring.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

I love Maggie, she’s such a talented and beautiful actress but this… girl no.

  • neonseattle

I love Maggie but this looks a bit dowdy. The shirt is cutting her body in half. I wish it was more cropped. And my eyes go straight to the boring brown shoes. They’re bringing down the lightness and whimsy of the outfit.

  • Ezmartin

She looks like an Easter egg.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

She has such a sweet smile it’s hard to criticize this.

  • BeeBeauNYC

It looks better on Maggie than it does the model, but it’s still an outfit that should be avoided!!

  • judybrowni

    High end? I guess.

But what does that matter, if the skirt and top look like they came out of separate Clearance and Irregulars barrels at a discount store.

And then crazy aunt Maggie slapped them on with her brown goin’ to the office shoes and bag?

I gasped when I saw this latest cray cray ensemble.

  • Shawn EH

Plus, her makeup and hair. I love that she’s finally trying!

  • bellesprit

    Love Maggie. Hate this look.

  • conniemd

Nobody should wear that shapeless, dull colored, strange shouldered top. The beige classes awfully with both the yellow and the white in the skirt. It looks like she got dressed in artificial light and didn’t realize how badly the colors look together in real light.

  • girliecue

Oh no, not back to the baggy! Stop with the baggy already! But that smile just made me forgive her. Ok, Maggie, if you really want to keep looking like a Weeble, I’ll just be happy at least you’re doing couture Weeble now.

  • joanna dash

    Sponge mop chic!

  • Lotus Baby

fitting that you featured her on sausage friday since she looks like a man :)

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Starting to skate too close to grandma territory with those shoes and bag. You’re worrying me again, Maggie.

  • janierainie

    Someone grab the wheel!!

  • Pudgy Possum

And, don’t forget, she looks totes adorbs! I would never say that in any other context, but there it is.

  • Lee Rickards Frew

No, not good. Maggie has gone right back to Crazyville. Too bad.

  • quiltrx

Yikes, those SHOES. And it’s rare I find myself saying this here, but I think she may actually need to go down a size. But then again, the shoulders seem to fit. I think it really is just an impossibly wide silhouette for any non-stick-size person to try to pull off.

  • Imasewsure

I kind of love that weird top on her. The rest of the outfit, not so much…

  • demidaemon

Sometimes, I wonder if she actually employs a stylist. Because this looks as if it were directly ripped from the lookbook. Also, is it just me or does this outfit make tiny Maggie look HUGE?

    • LambeeBaby

      Huge

  • thecitysleeps

I know I’m late and it’s probably an unpopular opinion but I love this look. I even like the shoes with it. It’s different and it works for me. I would have tried tucking the top in to see if it gives her a waist and more shape but I think the fabric is too stiff to do that in this instance.

  • SophieCollier

The blouse is too long on her and goes all maternity. According to the model-version, it should sit just a skosh higher, or maybe that’s my imagination.

  • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

She’s wearing a box made of separates, and it’s not working for her.

  • mhlmh

    backsliding.

  • surfergirl70

I think the skirt is beautiful, and would work on a top that was more fitted (and a different color). As is, it’s a shapeless ensemble that makes her look heavier than she is.

  • melanie0866

Looks like a maternity outfit from 1964.

  • Alison Jimenez

Is it awful that I kind of love this?

  • Lucas

The only thing I like about this outfit is the shoes. Sometimes I wonder if she is deliberately setting a low bar for herself so that way when she WERQS, all of our heads turn.
