Kerry Washington in Jason Wu at CFDA Awards

Posted on June 04, 2013

This is a gorgeous dress; perfectly suited to Miss Kerry.

‘Scandal’ star Kerry Washington attends 2013 CFDA Fashion Awards at Lincoln Center in New York City in a yellow duchess satin gown from the Jason Wu Resort 2014 collection accessorized with a Lanvin clutch and Monique Péan jewelry.

But we’re thinking yellow shouldn’t be on her list of approved colors. She’s actually reflecting the yellow of the garment in her face, although that could be a combo of shimmer and bronzer. Either way, she looks downright sallow. We don’t understand why she has such underplayed makeup for an event like the CFDAs and a dress like this one. It’s a shame, because that dress in a more Kerry-suitable color and with better makeup would be a head-turner for sure. Granted, it’s still a dramatic look and likely to have turned heads, but to our eyes, it all looks … off.

The best part of this dress is the back. The front looks like an apron. Her makeup is too understated – she should have gone WOW!

    • elleg929

My first thought was apron as well.

    • drdarke

I was wondering WTF she was going severe in her styling when her dress says “flirty and fun!” You could even excuse the elastic on the waistband if her face and hair didn’t look scream I’m Contractually Obligated To Be Here….

The back saves the dress from looking like a High-Fashion Apron, IMO.

  • Golfkat

I think the dress looks amateurish and ill-fitted. The construction just isn’t elegant at all, with the elastic in the back and the awkward darts in the bust. Not really a look that I’d go for at a fashion-event. It’s a do-over for me.

    • ballerinawithagun

Especially hate the elastic! Fabric is fabulous! A couple of years ago my favorite NY client asked for a dress in yellow. I sent her a sample of silk in a Lemon Chiffon color. I was appalled when she wanted an intense Lemon Yellow similar to this color, so that’s what I made. It is a fabulous dress! Lemon Yellow with Lemon Chiffon applique.

    • Mismarker

I was on the fence about this look until I noticed the elastic on the back. Thick elastic waistbands like that belong on children’s clothing, not a designer dress.

      • Kristin McNamara

That was exactly what I said in my head. Elastic bands like that are for little girls’ dresses. Not big fabu-stars’ award show gowns!

      • TheAmericaness

I went back and stared for like a good minute thinking you guys had to be wrong! I mean who puts elastic in anything but little kids clothes and those of us having babies, etc.? Alas, I think you’re right. Tsk. Tsk. Sigh.

  • MilaXX

I think she went too simple. A more colorful lip and perhaps a stud of some sort. I don’t dislike the color on her, but I don’t think the face goes with this look.

  • DinaSews

I really don’t like this style of breast darting on anyone. I can’t imagine why it’s so popular when it seems to flatten everyone out.

    • MilaXX

it’s often worn by smaller breasted women, but I imagine it would look even worse on a gal with a more ample bosom. It’s just a weird cut.

      • DinaSews

But you would think that smaller breasted women would want to do the best they could to enhance what they have, not detract from it. It also causes the neckline to pucker and not lay flat. Weird is an understatement to me!

  • clatie

I think this is very “socialite at the club’s big formal”. She is usually a lot more interesting.

  • I can’t figure out what is needed here – a different color clutch, a bangle, the dress to be perhaps anything other than that particular shade of yellow – but it’s not Kerry’s best. We’ve definitely seen better on her.

  • plinkiedoodle

It looks like the dress Audrey Tautou wore at Cannes. I’m not a huge fan of the breast darts on either one of these ladies, but I do like the gathers in the back on Kerry’s dress. I agree this color is not the best on her, but she does seem to pull it all off somehow.

    • l_c_ann

Audrey owned that dress and, sadly, the color yellow dominates these pictures. Kerry who? She’s almost unrecognizable which is not as it should be.

(Does Wu make all his dresses for the few who are short wasted?)

    • That’s what I was thinking. I like Audrey’s better.

  • SophiaPehawkins

I abhor that elastic on the back. I would murder it if I could get away with it.

    • Jessica Freeman

Right? All I could think was “Girl, your elastic is showing…

    • imspinningaround

Sing it, sister. It’s the Forever 21 cheater’s way out of properly cutting a waistband.

      • SophiaPehawkins

I’m preaching at your avi. What up 215? /Pam Beasly voice

Not to mention to looks cheap and tacky.

        • Golfkat

I agree on the elastic bit. It’s just a really bad and cheap-looking short-cut to a ‘fitted’ waist.

Also, there should be more Office references random places on the internet. Those make me very happy.

    • It just turns it into a cheap Halloween Disney Princess dress, doesn’t it?

  • Jessica Freeman

She definitely missed the mark on hair and make up. She looks like she came from the gym and threw on the dress.

  • GillianHolroyd

Well, it is satin and there are no creases… gets points for that?

    • Jaeda Laurez

She should give lessons- most of the time people walk down the carpet looking like a poorly made bed.

    • Rhonda Shore

I think the fact that it’s satin is part of the problem. While satin is sumptuous, it just doesn’t flatter anyone other than Twiggy-type figures.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I have to say, I love everything about this. I LOVE that yellow and the cut of the dress (totally works on somebody as petite as she is), I even love the “natural” face. She’s got a face where you can do that. And I love the clutch. It’s really simple, but I feel like everything comes together for me.

  • filmcricket

Better make-up and hair would have helped this a lot. J’adore that clutch, although I don’t know if it works with this ensemble.

  • blueberrypanckae

I love it , but she could wear a sweatshirt with cats on it from walmart and look gorgeous!

  • MartyBellerMask

Lipcolor, please. Also, inspired choice of clutch. Also also, no tacky-ass fingernails. Not our Miss Kerry. 🙂

  • Hermione

I think this looks “home-sewn”. Prada and Audrey Tautou did it better.

  • Oh Miss Kerry, no. The lack of lip, the color, the *elastic* on the back of the waist, it’s all just so not your friend. Better luck next time dear.

  • Sobaika

Hair/makeup need some oomph, stat. Dress is lovely on her.

    • 3boysful

At least her stylist knew this back required an updo. Think of all the cocker spaniel hair we might’ve seen with this one someone else.

  • $11431954

I love this look, it’s summery fresh and pretty. If Kerry had worn an eye-catching earring, it would have been a total werq for me.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

I think it is the red background that is messing with the way this color looks on her. If she was outside in a lighter setting, I bet the color of the dress and her make up would look perfect!! I really love this look for her. But red vs. yellow is a hard color combo to my eyes.

  • Thank God. I kept scrolling down, knowing in my heart there was going to be a “but….” after the photos.

The front of the dress has a little too much “school pinafore” vibe for me but the back is killer, and I rather like the elastic myself. However, a big ol’ chorus of “Girl, that’s not your color” should have greeted her the first time she donned the dress and went in front of her stylists.

  • elemspbee

agreed. it’s off. Fit issue, the front of the dress is also too high; looks like someone’s pulling it down from the back, to strangle her. Then the bottom half of the back–oh no.

and yes, the face is underwhelmed by this medicinal yellow.

  • Becky

Does that dress have pockets? I’ll take 2!

  • Well, her face is underdone for this dress. I think, she would have killed it, had she had more prominent makeup.

  • WendyD

Why do I feel like she already wore this somewhere?
    Why is it only Tuesday?

  • nannypoo

Yellow is a hard color to wear and it especially is not a good color for her. The elastic is bad, but I love way the fabric folds in the back. A soft, backless top is not going to help anyone’s figure, but I think this is a really pretty dress and, in a different color, would be great on her.

  • teensmom99

Make up would have made all the difference. My mom used to tell me I could wear any color if I just had the right lip stick. She is gorgeous and so stylish–perhaps my all time fave.

  • Introspective

Kerry is gorgeous. But the dress, while a lovely color, isnt. and like my fellow BKs have noticed, the hair and makeup are giving yoga class realness.

overall a meh, but I tolerate this way more than most because she’s so easy on the eyes…

  • formerlyAnon

I agree on the yellow/sallow impression. More than that, she needed a different color lip, and with the sleek hair, it should have been a bolder lip, in my less-than-expert opinion.

  • steeg of their own

Earrings. I really really want earrings with this, because some nice sparkly diamond clusters would make the rest of this look a lot better. Proper earrings would draw the eye upward to her head, helping her makeup not seem quite so low-key and keeping the dress from overwhelming her pictures with ~yellow. Maybe a brighter lip too, but earrings first (and maybe a diamond tennis bracelet or something similar to help the earrings out).

  • JP

I agree about the color, but the fit and style, perfection. Love the criss-cross detail in the back and the little flounce.

  • LaSylphide

Yellow is a tough color to wear, and I agree, it’s not doing her any favors. But the dress is so great on her, what can you say? And anybody that naturally pretty doesn’t need gobs of makeup, although she could have juiced it up a little.

  • decormaven

This shade of yellow definitely is making the rounds now. If her makeup had been more strongly deployed, this could have been another WERQ look among her many.

  • NOLA_gal

What’s with all the designers and their tit-darts this year? Weird.

  • marlie

I like the dress a lot, but I think the elastic in the back was a big mistake. And I’m not too “off” on the color, but I think that she could have gone for some bold, statements earrings in a color to maybe soften the harshness of the yellow. And she really needed more formal hair and makeup. I love the clutch, but maybe not with THIS dress, though I think the blue shoes were an inspired choice.

  • ashtangajunkie

I love the style of the dress on her and totally agree with you on the colour. I love the ring she’s wearing and the clutch is cool, although I’m not sure that it goes with the yellow gown.

  • conniemd

I think the elastic on the back was necessary because of the construction of the back straps. In order to get in and out of the dress you need either an elastic waistband or a zipper from the waist down. A waist zipper would have eliminated the back flounce because a zipper in the middle would have ruined it. Maybe someone with far better sewing skills could explain how a zipper could have been done, as it’s just my amateur sewing opinion. 🙂

    • Gwyndall

There appears to be a zipper on her left hip.

  • BrooklynBomber

But we’re thinking yellow shouldn’t be on her list of approved colors.

So relieved you said that. That’d be an awful lot of sunshine ‘n daisies ‘n buttercups on anybody, and it’s not doing her any favors. The silhouette, though, is great.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Mental note – next time I’m in need of a clutch, look no further than my jewelry box. And you said it Uncles, yellow is not her color, she’s a beautiful woman and here her looks jaundice.

  • bertkeeter

Why is she holding a cigar box?

  • silly little thumb

I absolutely adore Kerry Washington, but I think this would have been better if she let her hair down. Yellow is her color, though.

  • frannyprof

The front/top half looks strikingly like the Prada dress that Anne H. and Audrey T. sported. But I do like it.

  • ConnieBV

    Butt towel.

  • melanie0866

She just needs some pink lipstick. Near miss.

  • Jecca2244

this doesn’t feel like Jason Wu very much.

  • j_anson

Heh, I was just thinking that she’s lucky she can really rock this color. I guess her skin does look yellower than it naturally is, but it’s still within a normal range of human skin tones, so it doesn’t bother me.

  • SewingSiren

I liked the gown and even the color (but the background clashes) and the bag too. But then I got a load of the back …
needle scratch. I hate elastic waist on gowns. Very cheap looking .

  • PeaceBang

What a stunner of a dress!! I wish she’d get a new make-up artist and hair do and wear it again for something else. That’s a dress that deserves a second chance.

  • Qitkat

Kerry looks mellow, but not in this yellow ;-p
What I love is the clutch, polished petrified wood never looked better.

    • out of my way, everyone, i’m making a run for the purse!

  • RuthGo

Someone once said that a lot of Jason Wu’s stuff looks like a Simplicity pattern done in home ec class and I think this is a perfect example. Just no.

  • Cousin_Rose

Someone actually found a combo of color, cut, hair and or makeup that doesn’t look good on her. Should be fired!

  • cowper

    She’s carrying a wood purse?!?

  • this dress is absolutely stunning, and i think she could wear this color with the appropriate makeup. that lipstick, or lack thereof, is truly awful.

  • appliquer

Agreed. I wondered after reading the first line if this was going to be another one I couldn’t agree with you on! This dress is beautiful, and would be better on her in another color.

  • Anniebet

Wowser, beautemous dress. Too bad Kerry forgot she was going to an actual event and neglected to put on makeup or have her hair done, or wear earrings. Or a bracelet. Or necklace. At least she has a matchy ring and that tree trunk clutch.

Not your best attempt, Ms. W.

  • Diva in 4 Inch Heels

Agreed. The color makes her look wan in her gorgeous face. Maybe, if it was white or some other color, it would flatter her coloring better.

  • demidaemon

I think this is one of the few times I would have preferred tea-length. It seems to swallow here and the length and the shoe both seem wrong.

  • kimiakay

What a strange concoction of styling elements here. A four-square panel on the front leading to a halter neckline, an almost peplum in the back, but the real killer is the elastic backing in the waist back. That’s not even talking about the color, which is not her color at all. It seems like she’s worn other yellows before that looked good but I can’t remember. The dress has promise. I like the simple lines of the front except for the four square. It’s an almost almost.

  • e jerry powell

And, see, I still don’t get “resort collection” as a concept. I guess here the “resort” part is the color and the back detail. LOVE the silhouette, though

  • Beverly Kozma

The ladystars need to be buying some lipstick. With some color.

  • Love the dress and the clutch but agree about the make-up. It’s like they were going for youthful innocence. Some people just can’t help equating ‘yellow dress’ with young and sunny.

  • librarygrrl64

LOVE that clutch with this gown, though. 🙂

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I could have done with some more jewelry here.
