Katie Holmes in the West Village

Posted on June 13, 2013

Okay, Katie. You win. This is SUPER-cute:

Katie Holmes leaves Tartine restaurant in the West Village in New York City wearing an Étoile Isabel Marant embroidered dress paired with Superga sneakers.

Étoile Isabel Marant Beige Demma Embroidered Dress

Superga 2750 Cotu Classic Sneaker

We’d say it’s the best non-styled (as in, she didn’t pay someone to put this together) on-the-street celebrity look we’ve seen all year. Absolutely adorable. Love the dress, but the sneaks really make the look.

There is a constant low buzz behind her of softly clicking camera phones and whispered mentions of her name, which she has to pretend not to hear because there are paparazzi cameras on her. Celebrity life, darlings.

  • Totally adorable. full stop.

    • drdarke

Was this taken before or after the Wild Sex Romp Weekend That Drove Tom Cruise Mad, @kiltdntiltd:disqus ? It must be true – I saw it on the front page of The GLOBE….

I’m not enraptured, but it looks comfortable as Hell, so it gets a pass.

  • Cutie Patootie!

  • Jessica Freeman

Finally! She is not frump town, wearing terribly fitted jeans….love this look.

  • ccinnc

Gorgeous. And she’s looks much happier lately.

  • Dress and sneakers! Katie Holmes is dressing like my spirit animal.

  • hyperionic

I guess this is good compared to what she usually wears but that’s a pretty ugly peasant blouse.

    • xmixiex

right? a mumu with dirty sneakers? really? i’m even all for sneakers with a cute casual dress/skirt (which is how i dress often), but this is pretty fug.

      • NC_Meg

I’m with you two. The sneakers look like they’ve seen better days and the dress looks a few sizes too big. I know she’s just out running errands/buying flowers but this is kind of a mess. At least she looks happy?

      • Lisa Utter

Agreed. Looks like my grandma’s housedress.

      • Rhonda Shore

only an anglo-saxon could look good in that peasant dress.

      • kim bunchalastnames

ya, i’m on your bench. my daughter had this dress (and those sneakers) when she was three. i just can’t see it on a “grown up” without gagging a little.

    • starrika

Yeah, I’m not seeing it. This is awful! Have we already forgotten some of Emma Stone’s cute street looks?

      • charlotte

You are right, Emma Stone wins the street award. What do we call it? Gully? Cobble?

    • peachy

ugh. i totally agree. she looks like she’s headed off to the first day of grade school. not a flattering look. not a clean look. dress like an adult, s’il vous plait!

  • Annarosa

Is it me or her legs look very short? And the body very long? Maybe it is me.

    • barbarienne

It’s not just you. I was thinking this is adorable above the waist, but something goes wrong in the combination of the the dress length and the shoes. One or the other (or both) is stumpifying her legs.

    • I don’t think it’s the most flattering length ever, but I like this more than say, Reese’s perfectly pulled together attempt at “casually shopping”. It feels authentic and in the real world most of have outfits we like, despite knowing they could be a bit better. Also, I have ridiculously short legs for a tallish girl, sometimes you just have to press on. : )

    • Agatha Guilluame

It looks like they photoshopped the bottom of someone else onto her body. Isn’t she a tall girl with long legs? She is right? If this is what putting on sale bin sneakers does to her legs then she should never wear them. Ever. Not even to run downstairs to get the mail.

      • FeminineLipstique

She’s tall, but is long-waisted with shorter legs. As a lady with the same proportions, I just learned to deal with it and not care if my legs look stumpy. Living in NYC makes flats sort of necessary for me.

        • Agatha Guilluame

Even though she is long-waisted, I’ve never noticed (probably only other long-waisted people have, just like I’m obsessed with hairlines when no one else is) which means she’s usually styled (kudos to her stylists) in such a way that I’ve always thought she had super long killer legs. She’s always looked like “a girl that used to model”. And she’s not always in heels either…so is it the proportions of the dress combined with the sneakers, maybe? Or what if that decorative border near the hem was 8 inches higher?

          • FeminineLipstique

Yeah, I think the decorative hem is drawing the eyes to her knees and calves. I usually default to a skirt that covers the knee and then wear a flat shoe or sandal that creates an elongating illusion. But sometimes, you just don’t care and wanna carry around flowers and wear some sneaks. 🙂

          • Agatha Guilluame

          • tailypo

I can say with absolute certainty that she has stumpy legs. As a 5’10” woman with stumpy legs, I carefully curate a list of celebrities who share my affliction. Katie is of the tribe.

    • anyalama

I was on a show she was on a few years ago and I remember noticing her legs were thicker and more muscular than one might expect on your standard starlet. Nothing wrong with that at all.

      • Annarosa

so it is the dress… and/or the shoes.
I think people should pair some heels with a short dress/pants, to avoid the “cut the legs” effect.
        Just my 2 cents.

      • xmixiex

agreed- I love me some strong muscular lady legs!

  • Heather

Cute! Tho I would’ve paired with ballet flats or leather sandals. I’m not a sneaker girl.

    • Little_Olive

I like those kind of sneakers but I am careful with which ones to buy. They tend to close high on the foot -almost at the beginning of the calf- they are a cankle hazard. It sounds a bit exaggerated but well, we all become experts in seeing our own little body issues in others .

      • librarygrrl64

LOL, “cankle hazard!” My feet and ankles are the only thin and elegant spots on my body these days, so I am all about drawing attention down there. 🙂

    • librarygrrl64

I like the sneaks because they have much more arch support than the average sandal or flat. Also, open flat shoes on skanky NYC sidewalks…… 🙁

  • StellaZafella

Wonderful images. Another famous person dressing and acting normally… except that Katie appears to be getting a better handle on how to do this while still knowing that THERE WILL BE EYES UPON HER.

She’s got a real ‘girl next door’ kinda smile, to boot. Sweet!

  • Cute and very comfy.

  • Mrs. Julien

It does not do her justice: A (presumably) expensive dress that looks like a schmatta you could buy at Kmart for 14.99. If you saw a non-famous woman wearing that you would think nothing of it. I think we just appreciate that she looks normal and happy again.

  • Diego!

Not only she looks chic and comfortable, but also she is smiling at the cameras for the very first time in many many years. You go Katie!!!!

  • mjude

    so cute & comfy!

  • Maluca

    I’m sorry guys, but NO.

And it may be just to me but she always looks as if she smells funky.

  • Macunaima

It’s so fun to see her recapturing a normal life. Well, as normal as a celeb’s life can get, but it’s way normal compared to her captivity.

    • Tess Danesi

Agreed. So nice to see her smiling and looking genuinely happy. I still remember that constant spaced out look she had during the Cruise years. I’m happy for her.

  • BitterKitten

“We’d say it’s the best non-styled (as in, she didn’t pay someone to put this together) on-the-street celebrity look we’ve seen all year.” I’d really like a dose of whatever crack you’re smoking this morning.

  • MilaXX

Cute! I hope the Marant for Target is half as cute

  • Edwina3

This is the happiest I’ve seen her look since the pre-Cruise era. Love the whole look, fresh, summery and youthful.

  • Little_Olive

If only her hair was a wee bit more put together. But yay for her.

  • melanie0866

Hm. You all clearly do not live in Texas, where you can buy Mexican dresses just like this for $4 and they are no more remarkable than cut-offs. This is like saying, “Oh, look, a T-shirt with jeans! Isn’t she adorable!”

  • shelley514

    Her hair is a tragedy.

  • CeeQ

I kinda don’t care for this that much.

    • halleygee

Neither do I. Actually, I think it’s awful.

  • ailujailuj

    goddamn I miss the village.

  • Terry

Adorable, but she could have bought that dress for a lot less money in any mercado in the Rio Grande Valley.

  • snarkykitten

    Is she picking a wedgie…?

  • Ann VerWiebe

I would totally wear that look. So cute!

  • carpediva

But-but-but…. what about the dreaded stank-sneak?

    • librarygrrl64

Powder/spray and panty liners in the shoes, anti-perspirant on the bottoms of the feet.

I really hate socks, so I know all the tricks. 😉

      • Qitkat

You stopped me dead in my tracks with “panty liners in the shoes.” What?

        • librarygrrl64

If you have sweaty feet, you can slip a panty liner into your shoe as an insert, then discard it at the end of the day. 😉

  • librarygrrl64

I would SO wear this exact outfit if I didn’t think I was now too old for it. 🙁

  • Nicole

The length and shape (or lack thereof) of this is awful awful awful. Coupled with the shoes, she looks like a little girl playing around in daddy’s oversized t-shirt.

  • marlie

I love this! And this dress could have been equally cute and a teensy bit more dressed up with a pair of strappy sandals.

  • decormaven

Whenever she looks happy, I give her a thumbs-up. Keep on sailing, love.

  • PeaceBang

Oh. I feel so much better. Those sneakers even make Katie Holmes’ legs look stumpy and her knees look chubby. If that’s possible, then I guess I can’t expect any better for myself (P.S. wouldn’t-be-caught-dead-with-’em). I’m glad to see her looking happy and relaxed and the dress is adorbs.

  • Really? I’m totally not feeling it.

  • Sarah Thomas

According to the internet, that is a $500 dress. Here’s one that costs $50. You’re welcome, Katie. Wear it with your nasty sneakers.

  • Birdie

Re: the sneakers…pretty sure these are Supergas (kind of like Italy’s Converses, I think)…and on trend in the fashion blogs.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

It looks like she is dragging an imaginary invisible child along beside her.

  • Tafadhali

This looks exactly like something my mom would wear.

That’s not snark; my mom just owns those shoes and would absolutely wear the dress. I still think it’s very cute on Katie!

  • Ugh, SO CUTE. I’m feeling a bit under the weather at the moment, and this look might inspire me to get out and go grocery shopping.

  • MichelleRafter

A movie star with standard sized calves, what’s not to like?

  • kimiakay

Sorry, I do not understand her appeal. Don’t particularly like this look either. It needs something, but I don’t know what, maybe a summer hat? Sandals? Something.

  • MannahattaMamma

Lovely…but I’ve worn supergas with no socks and you know what? After a day walking around NYC those things are stanky stanky stanky. Those gonna be some urban feet.

  • MaggieMae

Huh. Not feeling the sneakers with that ethnic dress. Dress is cute on her.

  • PrunellaV

And OF COURSE she’s carrying flowers! Right out of an early-70s Glamour magazine.

  • macwell

She looks great. Those legs though…..lotion please…
