Juliette Lewis in Zac Posen at CFDA Awards

Posted on June 04, 2013

We love you, Juliette Lewis. We have always loved you. We do not, however, love this dress on you.

Juliette Lewis attends the 2013 CFDA Fashion Awards at Lincoln Center in New York City in a Zac Posen dress.

First off: great shoes, and pretty great hair and makeup. Unfortunately, like Kerry’s dress, it’s another instance of someone wearing a color that just doesn’t work for them. In addition, the fussiness of that skirt strikes us as very un-Juliette-Lewis-like, if not downright unflattering. We suppose this sort of neo-Betty Draper look makes for an unexpected surprise coming from her, but we’re not convinced this style is for her at all.

That backdrop color is terrible. I think it’s making that dress look even closer to her skintone than it normally would.

    • trisker

Agree — I don’t think the dress would be so bad but it was a poor choice for an orangey-red backdrop.

    • Ann VerWiebe

I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if all that red affected the cameras as well.

  • NOLA_gal

Gotta disagree – I think she looks fantastic! Particularly the dress and shoe colors together. She needs a stronger lip color but I’m damned if I know what color it should be.

    • teensmom99

Once again better lipstick and hands out of the pockets would have made all the difference.

  • Rhonda Shore

She looks cute and I REALLY love her hair and make-up.

    • Kristin McNamara

Agreed. May be the best I’ve ever seen her hair and makeup look!

  • NYCGlamourpuss

It’s not a great dress on her, no, but damn if I didn’t even recognize her! She’s such a quirky character that when you polish her up like this, it’s quite a difference!

    • Spicytomato1

Yes. I’ve always thought she was pretty but just never knew how to enhance it properly. And sometimes even seemed to detract from it deliberately. I’m not a fan of the dress color (too 70s or 80s bridesmaid for me), but the style is a refreshing change for her.

      • majorbedhead

There you go, *that’s* what I don’t like about it – it’s very Watters&Watters Bridesmaid-y. The color is not great on her, but her face and hair are lovely, and I can’t believe it, but I even like the shoes.

      • YourLibrarian

Exactly! I swear, I wore this exact dress in this exact color to my sister’s wedding in 1987. I do think she looks gorgeous from the neck up, though.

  • MilaXX

I think the dress could be passable if she wasn’t posing with her hands in the pockets.

  • melanie0866

But it’s so much better than the batshit crazy rock star drag she usually wears!!

  • Amanda Herriott Welliver

I think it’s her foundation and lip color that are the problem – I love the dress. (but I think I’d love it more on Christina Hendricks.)

  • ChaCha_70

I think if the dress were a different color, this would be a werq. She looks great! Love her btw!

    • 3boysful

Agree. Love that portrait collar on her. But this orange-ish hue is too close to her fake tan.

  • schadenfreudelicious

Girl doesn’t age, gotta give her that

    • Vickiefantastico

She looks fantastic! She’s aged extremely well.

  • GoAwayKardash

    Completely disagree. She looks Fab!

  • zenobar

    So…so much orange…

  • filmcricket

Her head looks amazing. That dress is so 90s bridesmaid that I can’t even deal with it. Nipple darts, ugh!

  • She is such as smart, sassy and rockin’ person. She couldn’t find something to reflect who she is?

    • drdarke

Yeah, I didn’t even recognize Juliette Lewis in that getup, @SassyMcFrench:disqus . She looks like the sting at the end of THE STEPFORD WIVES here – from the dress to the styling to the Just Got Hit In the Face With a Shovel expression as she poses….

      Girl, That’s Not Your Look.

  • Jeremiah Capacillo

This could work if Zoe Saldana wore it.

  • Diego!

I’m sorry but I disagree 100% with you guys. The dress and the wall behind Juliette make a confusing juxtaposition of colors for the human eye, but she looks amazing and that dress looks lovely on her. She looks really pretty here.

    • mhleta

Deigo, I kind of agree. That neckline is all kinds of gorgeous on her. If she were in front of a blue background instead of red, this dress and the color would probably read much better.

      • Introspective

so true! blue (or many other colors besides orange or red) would have made this look sing a lot more. i wonder if celebs (or their teams) get notified of what the step and repeat backdrop will look like in advance? and do people actually modify their look based on it? because this isnt the first time a look has been torpedoed by some wonky background action…

      • Diego!

Cool! Thanks! We all agree she looks gorgeous! 🙂

  • BrookeNR

Getting Maid of Honor vibes off this, hard core.

  • OrigamiRose

It’s really not her style, yet it’s nice to see her back and looking sharp (in spite of misgivings).

  • alyce1213

I’ve got to disagree. I love the dress on her and I think she looks fabulous. It’s the best she’s looked in a long while.

  • shirab

Enough with the shoes whose toes are not even pretending to follow the shape of an actual foot! Argh!

  • JP

If the color of the dress was the same color as the shoes, maybe it would look better. However, given her penchant for showing up in public like she just rolled out of bed, I gotta give her props all the same.

  • sekushinonyanko

I’m pretty into this look; I like it. I even like the color. She looks really pretty, and having a kind of invisible-colored dress makes sense if the dress is kind of complicated.

  • SewingSiren

I think she looks great. The color is not the best for her although part of it is the back drop clashes. I like the silhouette on her though.

  • PastryGoddess

I saw it from a different angle and really liked the dress on her. I agree that the color is bad

  • This dress would have been stunning on her in a teal aquamarine greeny blue colour..

I think the backdrop is a problem but also the overall lighting seems to be an issue..

  • MON-O-CHROME. What an unfortunate choice for a backdrop.

  • Tatiana Luján

this dress has “bridesmaid” written all over it.

  • Ramon Figueroa

Love the shoes, but her toes look like they are ready to bolt.

  • Another gal I love to the point of blindness to her flaws. Sure she looks very bridesmaid, but the sum total is working for me. Those shoes are killa, I want her hair, and her face is stunning, considering how lightly she is made up. Juliette 4 Eva!

  • Ms. Schmidt

I like it but it strikes me that her hair and shoes are ominously close in color/tone. It does strike me that the backdrop isn’t doing her any favors, either.

  • PeggyOC

But she looks like she thinks she looks like a million bucks, and that goes a long way.

  • PeaceBang

Always makes me happy to see her. What a great talent and spirit. I’d love to see her and Jennifer Lawrence do something together — they would rock the screen. She looks fantastic despite the “honey that’s not your dress” dress. I do love the shoes with the dress.

  • marlie

Considering what Emily Blunt wore, my new rule is that Zac Posen shouldn’t be allowed to work in satin. On the plus side, this isn’t as unflatteringly tight on her as so many of his dresses seem on other ladystars. On the negative side, it’s still too fussy, and the color is NOT her friend. But I might actually like the silhouette if it didn’t have the weird pocket flaps.

ETA: Her hair and makeup are very pretty, and the shoes are TO. DIE.

    • Bless your heart, they all keep wearing Zac Posen, even though, it’s been agreed that maybe they should not. ; )

      • marlie

I know. I need to stop getting so annoyed by them all. I suppose once all the gowns from this collection are worn, we’ll be done with him. For now (at least until the next collection).

  • shorty j

I find her lack of whackadoo disturbing. Sad but true, I see “Juliette Lewis” and pray for insane neon pantsuits or something.

    • EdithP

Yes, this is far too normal for her. But she looks fabulous from the neck up!

  • I have a weakness for dresses with pockets, but this is not her color or fabric.

  • Tracy_Flick

I think it looks fab, and I don’t even hate the color on her.

  • Bklynface

It’s a conspiracy! Zach Posen subverting the RC by turning all the girlies into senior prom dates!

  • kim bunchalastnames

it would have been so great in celadon.

  • ballerinawithagun

What is up with Zac adding all of these weird little flaps on every thing this year. When he does classic, he so good! Leave it to Donna Karan to do these strange oragami touches, she can handle them.

  • mhlmh

It might just be the color. In a better color it might look pretty good.

  • carpediva

That seems like a painful amount of toe cleavage.

  • DiverK

And ladies, if your dress has pockets, great. But keep your hands out of them!

  • I wish she had worn that in a blue or green.

  • ailujailuj

i L.U.H.U.V. those shoes (she is so lucky to have shoes to match her hair). They are just so elegant and pointy and reminiscent of those fashion designer sketches that make women look like they have long spears for legs. I love the pairing with the color of the dress (maybe better in fall?) love the bodice and neckline (but not sure the color is a good match for her tone). nice subtle makeup. would like the full skirt very much without the pocket flares. wtf.

  • tereliz

I’m beginning to blame this backdrop for tainting the light and making everyone look sallow. I love this dress and the styling is great. She looks fab! Would love to have seen this dress in a different setting.

  • I totally agree. I wish that “drapery folded back to reveal vagina/skirt” part was gone. The dress fits so well on top…

  • Yikes. I think I saw that bridesmaid’s dress…in 1989.

  • Julie

The shoes are pretty neat though.

  • crash1212

I think she looks fabulous. I don’t think it’s so much the color of the dress that’s not working as the background that sucks.

  • Joyce VG

    I second that emotion!

  • How much do you want them to switch dresses? I just realized I want that to happen.

  • Kimberlini

What the f***??? Juliette looks like a grown-up!

  • willworktomorrow

That shoe color with that dress is genius. Just gorgeous. I think she looks perfect.

  • KAO TV

    she looks great!

  • Suzanne Elovecky

She looks like Stockard Channing, a little, as she ages.

  • ashtangajunkie

I too love Juliette Lewis. She was in a movie that was filmed at the photography studio where I worked in high school. She was really nice and funny. Awkward 15 year old me thought that she was the best thing ever.

  • TheAmericaness

Get her away from that backdrop and it might be easier to tell if this works or not.

    • conniemd

I think that red back-drop is probably bad for a lot of colors other than black or white. Like with the yellow dress, in both cases it seems the skin is a strange color. Can’t tell if its the dress or the red backdrop.

  • Anniebet

Everything is so fricking orange. Even her eyes! And hair! Maybe it’s time for a monitor check for me?

Anyhoo, I do love the shoe color with the dress- totally brilliant. Actually, the dress is pretty great too.

  • maggiemaybe

Just LOVE her. I bet that color looks better on her in person. Those shoes kick a%$.

  • amanda lynn

that’s too bad that we disagree; i think that she looks great.

  • Erica_Vuitton

I understand it’s a classy event and her normal rocker spandex jumpsuit schtick wouldn’t be appropriate but neither is this Betty Draper drag look. She usually shows a lot more personal style on the RC.

  • Maluca

I don’t know guys, I really like it! It’s a nice departure for her! I like her in this more demure, ladylike look!

  • Joy

She didn’t have a belt, so she matched her shoes to her hair.

  • jmorino08

Way too bridesmaid and that color too closely matches her spray tan. Nope.

  • demidaemon

I’m sorry. I see you are kind of trying to defend Zac Posen in saying this dress has any merit, but it is really a particularly ugly bridesmaid dress (I realize that this phrase may be an oxymoron). The styling just drove it headfirst into that same territory. But, really, once Juliette chose this dress, she was SOL.

  • quiltrx

I’ve always loved her too (and wish she and Brad had been a forever thing)! She does look pretty great, and I think the bodice really suits her (and I wonder if the color would look better against a backdrop that isn’t the color of Satan on South Park). But I totally agree that the foo-foo skirt isn’t what I think of for her.
But again, she looks SO pretty and happy.

  • Mona_Visa

    Girl looks good though.

  • Aurumgirl

The whole look reads Bridesmaid to me. But she does look good.

  • Really? I like it. It’s not her best color but it doesn’t offend and it’s a pretty color. And I just can’t get over the brilliant shoe choice. J’adore!

  • DuBey2

As usual, I agree with TLo. Loved everything but the dress. (I like to test myself by rating the whole look before reading your synopsis. And I’m ridiculously proud of myself when its in sync)

  • anotherkate

    She doesn’t age, does she?

Also, if I ever woke up as a celebrity and Zac Posen offered to lend me a dress for the RC, I think I would decline. I just never see whatever it is the rest of the fashion world is seeing with him–all that satin, all that overwrought draping…it seems so old-fashioned to me! Can anyone here talk me out of it? Am I crazy?

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I love the dress and the color. I think it’s the backdrop that’s screwing up the look.
