Jessica Chastain at Maui Film Festival

Posted on June 17, 2013

If you’d asked us about the possibility of Jessica Chastain looking good in a lemon-yellow sundress, we probably would have simply wrinkled our noses in distaste wordlessly, nothing else needing to be said.

Jessica Chastain attends the 2013 Maui Film Festival in Wailea, Hawaii in a yellow dress paired with Jimmy Choo sandals.

But this actually looks better on her than we ever could have predicted, given her coloring.

We’d quibble with a lot of the details of this look (shape, shoes, hair, mostly) but she looks pretty and relaxed. We’d probably be a lot bitchier about a look like this if she was on a red carpet at a film premiere or something like that, but any dress that was specifically chosen to look good with a lei is a dress that doesn’t need a lot of bitchery slung at it.

Pretty, but that waist seam is crying out for a belt.

      • ballerinawithagun

        You are correct!

Begging really. It also would have given a visual interest to distract the eye from the lumpy seaming elsewhere.

Definitely not a fan of the shape, especially around her midsection, but goddamn she’s gorgeous. She looks at ease and relaxed, with radiant skin and simple, non-fussy hair. It’s exactly what she needs to wear and she (and her gays) did it exactly right.

Everything from the hip down makes me sick

      • Dan_In_NYC

Ha! I have to agree. If the first words I think about one’s shoes are “nurse” or “grandma,” that’s not good.

        • PeaceBang

Cripes, I ain’t never seen a grandma or a nurse in stilettos.

          • Aurumgirl

My mother wore stilettos and heels long after becoming a grandmother. But never ones as clunky and ugly as these.

      • joanna dash

        This.

    • Danielle L

I have quibbles with it, but her genuine smile is breathtaking.

    • dorothea_brooke

I envy her hair. Deeply. She looks so pretty in the smiling picture. And yeah, quibbles, but maybe she wanted to eat that night?

    • steeg of their own

I think I’d like it better with her hair down so we could see the red/yellow thing going on, but she looks relaxed and happy, and who can argue with that? Well done, Chastain!

    • Anniebet

Welp, face and hair look pretty washed out here, but she’s too gorgeous to care. The dress and color have a lot of positives, but look somewhat badly fitted and matronly. Love the lei.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

      Quelle surprise!

    • marlie

I don’t love the way this fits her and makes her look wider than she is, but the color is gorgeous.

    • MilaXX

I wish she had accessorized. A bracelet or ring would have been great. Seeing the lei with the dress makes me wish for a purple cocktail ring of some sort.

      • decormaven

My thoughts exactly. I’m thinking the stylist kept things unadorned, counting on visual interest from leis.

The dress is golden yellow, not lemon yellow.

      • ConnieBV

My first thought was goldenrod. Not enough orange for marigold. Still, it makes a difference, because it’s orange and warm where yellow would be cool and it looks great with her hair and skin.

      • frederieke

I was thinking Cadmium Yellow but I think in art paint terms and not fashion colors.

    • raininmai

IMO, a bright gold color on a redhead is a natural choice. She looks beautiful and the purple in the lei is a perfect contrast. And I’d give anything to be in Wailea right now! :::sigh:::

    • gabbilevy

She looks happy and relaxed in a cute sundress in Hawaii. Bitch.

    • LaSylphide

Kind of odd pairing what appears to be a KMart dress ($29.99) with a pair of Jimmy Choos ($3 million billion trillion), but what the heck, the color is great on her and she looks like she’s having fun.

    • gloriana232

She’s so pretty! Love the lei.

    • demidaemon

I’d like this better if it had a different neckline. The current one is kind of sloppy and unflattering. The rest of it is fine and appropriate for Hawaii. I can even ignore the mullet hem here.

    • Turtle_Island

      Gorgeous.

    • GorgeousThings

Sigh…. I want to be in Hawaii right now.

    • nannypoo

She looks pretty and relaxed, but I really hate this shitty dress.

    • Jaeda Laurez

Can somebody please box up that dress and send it to my house? Thanks.

    • kim bunchalastnames

is that really lemon yellow, though? isn’t it more … like … mango?

    • Qitkat

Clearly she is thrilled to see her true love, who is serenading her with Some Enchanted Evening.

    • Tatiana Luján

I wish she’d worn the dress with flat golden sandals.
The ponytail seems fine, since the interest of the look is on the neck and shoulders.
The plucky seamings are a shame.

    • Jecca2244

the bra/boob area is weird. i just love her. for no reason really than that she always seems genuinely happy to be wherever she is.

    • EEKstl

All true, and who WOULDN’T be happy about attending the Maui Film Festival, but mewishes the dress were knee-length. And if it were then she DEFINITELY would have needed a different — i.e. NOT NUDE — sandal.

    • Louise Bryan

The lei makes the look oodles better, and it was pretty good before.

    • ailujailuj

While I just adore her blissful glee……… And what else truly matters?
I have trouble with the dress. She can wear the color – I don’t have my color wheel on hand but it’s not a lemon yellow – more like daffodil. That said, she is lovely in that color. But the cut at the waist isn’t right for her. Maybe a thin belt of the same color/fabric but that’s it- I really think it looks best on a more hourglass figure (not to say that she doesn’t have a spectacular figure) but it might work better if it melted a bit – rather than “rubber banded” her waist. Perfect length -LOVE the hem. The intermittent seams are awful and wreck the lines of the skirt.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I HATE THAT FREAKING YELLOW! Am I the only one? Can we please leave primary screaming fucking yellow out of clothing palettes for good? I must take a pill now.

    • librarygrrl64

Is she allergic to jewelry or something?
