Jane Lynch in Dolce&Gabbana

Posted on June 10, 2013

Oh, nicely done, Miss Jane. We approve.

Jane Lynch attends the 2013 Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York City in Dolce&Gabanna.

Like a lot of lady-lovin’ ladies of a certain age and style, she’d kind of fallen into the rut of just slapping on a black blazer over a pair of pants and a shiny solid-color blouse and calling it a day. That’s fine for work-a-day looks, but it starts looking a little Casual Friday on the red carpet. This look stays absolutely true to her style, but it’s put together thoughtfully instead of thrown together by default. Everything’s tailored and fitted; the vest gives the look some shape and visual interest; the shoes are low key but flatter the look; and she’s topped it off with some interesting jewelry with a little bit of edge to it. It all looks deceptively simple at first glance but it’s a really well styled look for her.

I have to call this a WERQ.

    • Tom Shea

I’m inclined to agree. Unless she had totally Dietrich’d it, this is about as good as a mature male-dressin’ lady can look in tux style.

      • Bexxx

        She’s a lady-dressin’ lady- clothes aren’t (or shouldn’t be, anyway) gendered

        • Tom Shea

But hey presto, they are anyway. And since I namechecked Marlene Dietrich in a post on Jane Lynch, I’m going to assume you know exactly what the hell I’m talking about.

    • MoHub

      Absolutely a WERQ.

    • Annarosa

I would change the shoes but yes, definitely a WERQ.

    • ankali

Personal best for her? Certainly the sexiest and best fitted look I think I’ve seen on her.

  • Michelle Wilson

Best she’s looked on the red carpet in a long time. She looks happy and comfortable.

  • marlie

She looks great – and comfortable (she always looks uncomfortable in gowns). Best she’s looked on the red carpet in a long time!

  • AmeliaEve

Jane looks great. But, seriously, what is with the facing on the vest? How about a full lining so we don’t see all the construction in it? Under the bright lights it looks like a cheap shortcut.

    • barbarienne

I think that may be shadows from the jacket. Look at the difference between the first two photos. The light/dark areas are entirely different.

      • AmeliaEve

I hope you are correct. That would renew some of my faith.

  • Anathema_Device

Yes! She looks so great here. I love that she upped the style ante while staying true to herself.

  • Chuck Barthelme

Absolutely WERQ. She and Ellen Degeneres must shop in the same clothing departments.

  • Among the many good things to happen as a result of greater acceptance of openly gay celebs is the freedom that lady-lovin’ lady stars have to wear something other than a gown.

    • StellaZafella

“Coco Chanel put women in slacks… which made the other women who were already wearing them very grateful.”
      -Gertrude Stein

  • Bexxx

    Her makeup is gorgeous.

  • The Versatile Chef

Loving everything except the hair. Does anyone else think it ages her a bit?

  • Great outfit. Diggin’ everything except for her hair.

  • stephbellard

This is the best she’s looked in a long time.

  • Snappy in all the best ways.

  • Jennifer L.

Love it, and her makeup is soft and gorgeous!

    • Rhonda Shore

It’s sharp, well styled, make-up is great, and it’s the magical black and white combo — I don’t see this look as age-specific and would like to see the “woman of a certain age” line just disappear. I mean, we don’t call Sean Connery a “man of a certain age”, do we???

  • nannypoo

    Best ever for her. Gorgeous.

  • Peter Camp

And she absolutely SHUT. IT. DOWN. singing “Little Girls” during the show. I’m willing to bet Annie’s box office has been blowing up since it opened this morning.

I have to admit I was not-so-secretly hoping for a full Tonys red carpet recap from you boys… any chances of that happening later today?

Edited to add: Or can we at least hope for some commentary on the way Cicely Tyson dressed up like an exotic flower for last night’s proceedings?

  • random_poster

Male celebrities need to hire her suit tailor.

  • Rand Ortega

Funny, I just saw her yesterday in “The Fugitive”. Had no idea she was in that. This suit really is perfect for her. I love the cut, the vest is a beautiful touch & the jewelry is great. A tiny quibble: A colorful pump would’ve made this a WERQ. Well done, Miss Jane!

    • MilaXX

check out her IMBD, she really has been a “It’s that Girl” in a lot of movies.

  • bertkeeter

Like the look except for necklace. She is being true to her some what butch no-frills approach to dressing! I say go for it!

  • I think the shoes are just one step too far in the “granny” region…

    • Gwyndall

I like a comfy pair of shoes as much as the next gal, but those are just BAD.

  • Anniebet

Very classy look for her, although perhaps she skipped the hair part of “hair and makeup”?

  • Nicola Anna Molly Page

Werq for me too. I’m surprised at the uncles for not snapping the hell out of it!

  • Joyce VG

Ooh what a gorgeous tall drink of water!

  • This might be the best I’ve ever seen her look. So glad she’s not wearing those froufy gowns anymore.

  • aahlife

This is her look. Graphic, modern, and the same time relaxed.

  • MilaXX

Finally someone fit her into a pair of well tailored pants!

  • SportifLateBoomer

I’m a straight woman but Jane Lynch, with that look, makes me all kinds of tingly down there. Love the look of relaxed confidence and ease. Awesome menswear take. RAWR.

  • MzzPants

    She looks great!

  • Lattis

I must be a fashion schizophrenic. How can I love this look and also Helena Bonham Carter? The one thing I am consistent on is lace. I hate lace. Oh, and pink.

    • marlie

Not schizophrenic at all. Each lady has a very distinct – and very different – look that works for them (when they get it right). Just goes to show that the same thing doesn’t work for all women.

  • Kimberlini

    I LOVE her necklace.

  • carnush

I wish she’d worn a pointy stiletto, but still a great look.

  • stubbornthoughts

She has always successfully hit a great balance of feminine masculinity. Whether she’s wearing a dress or a suit, she’s always Jane. I love her for that.

  • Claudia Berry

    LOVE her!!!

  • MK03

She ALMOST makes me want to see Annie. ALMOST. Then I remember it’s full of obnoxious children and obnoxious songs and I come to my senses.

    • “Little Girls” is, not coincidentally, my favorite song in Annie.

      • MK03

        Same here.

  • Glammie

Damn, this is perfect for her. She’s got her menswear thing going, but without it being drag king. The necklace and neckline are perfect for her. I feel like she’s getting to be who she is (she never looks that comfortable in evening gowns) and elegant as well. Love it.

  • Snaps!

  • Crystal

She sang SO WELL last night!

  • formerlyAnon

I do wish she’d worn bit of color, but I think her face & hair look good so I won’t quibble. I feel very out of the loop that I somehow missed that she’s in Annie.

  • JP

I love the contrasts of the white vest against the black suit, and the black necklace against her white skin. Fabulous.

  • Total WERQ. And she knocked it out of the park last night. Let’s not give her back to LA. I think she belongs on the East Coast with us.

  • CrazyAuntie

Makeup is lovely and I like the hair too.

  • berkeleygirl

Her makeup is especially flawless, especially the eyes.

  • Dan_In_NYC

She looks amazing, love the shapes, the cut, etc. But that hair – not the best it’s looked.

  • quiltrx

She looks great–very put together. Sorry to hear about her and her wife…she does look happy here though, huh?

  • e jerry powell

I am sad about the divorce, though.

    • Heather

Yes, tho it means she’s back on the market.

      • e jerry powell

        True, that.

  • Tracy Walker

It’s the tailoring that makes it. So much more flattering than the boxy pantsuit she tends to favor.

  • Aaminah Khan

Best she’s looked in a long time. Love it.

  • bellafigura1

I think she could have done better with the shoes, maybe a silver loafer? They are a little granny-esque.

  • Turtle_Island

    She looks great.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

Whoever does her makeup does a great job. She always looks really good and neither under- or over-done.
