IN or OUT: Jennifer Carpenter in Vera Wang

Posted on June 12, 2013

Yikes, girl. Either you’re chronically style-challenged to a tragic degree or whoever put your look together hates you.

Jennifer Carpenter attends the 2013 Critics’ Choice Television Awards in Beverly Hills, California in Vera Wang.

Vera Wang Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Kate Bogucharskaia

That is so very not pretty, elegant or chic, to our eyes. Since we’re still exhausted, we’re turning the discussion of the merits of this look over to y’all. Don’t let us down, darlings. Unleash the bitch. And don’t forget to show your work.

Vote Now!

IN! Because reasons!

OUT! Because other reasons!

The Bitter Kittens had some quibbles with Hailee Steinfeld’s belly skin, but they still voted the look IN.

  • I actually like the dress on her. She has a more boyish figure, so the illusion of shape is a plus for her. The bumpit hair can go, though.

    • l_c_ann

The bum-pit hair being located slightly below the arm-pit hair?

    • Emmyllou

Agree completely. (Is big bump hair back? Oy. I smote my own forehead.)

    • I was thinking the same thing! She can pull off so much with that tall, lanky body! Why is she going for bulk?

  • blogless

The hair is the worst part for me – I just can’t get past how unflattering it is.

  • xmixiex

sweet merciful christ, maybe you boys need your nap! after being prefaced with “Yikes, girl. Either you’re chronically style-challenged to a tragic degree or whoever put your look together hates you.” I expected bad… REALLY bad. Maybe I’m also chronically style-challenged to a tragic degree, but while I’m not crazy about the dress, it’s not THAT bad.

    • No, it’s ugly, hon. Sorry.

      • DebbieLovesShoes

I agree so muchly. And the skirt looks likes she’s opening the curtains on her lady parts.

    • j_anson

I had exactly the same reaction. I’d rate it, like, a 3 or 4 out of 10. Like, I don’t particularly like it. But I wouldn’t go to “Yikes” either. :

    • anyalama

I might go as far as to say it is a bad idea, well executed.

    • RedRaven617

I’m going to side with TLo. My first instinct was “why would someone do that to their hips? Yikes.”

      • xmixiex

well she doesn’t have hips. she’s very long and lanky… she’s the type who can get away with fullness added there.

  • Where to begin? Hair, awful. Dress, bizarro shape that does nothing for her. She should have worn the black gloves, might have helped but I doubt it. Did I mention that the hair is just awful? I’m at a loss for words.

    • Donna Tabor

And don’t forget that awful makeup job.

It’s a big ole pile of No, isn’t it?

      • Hahaha. I kept trying not to look at her face. Bad, bad, bad.

        • Anplica Fiore

Truth! This puts it OUT of the park…in a bad way

      • Yeah, that eye makeup is not for her, to put it mildly.

    • Rhonda Shore

The main problem with the dress itself is the proportions. The model’s version had the coat a bit longer and the full gloves, which somehow balanced it out. Without this fine-tuning it all just looks like too small, too short, like some sort of bad sausage casing she squeezed herself into, it’s just off. And every time i see this colorless lip trend on yet another celeb, i hear Kay Thompson extolling the value of a “mahvelous mouth” (Funny Face). The problem with the styling is that it lacks a focal point. Bad make-up and blah hair. Sad really.

  • First of all Vera Wang should be dragged out and horsewhipped for this horror. Second, Jennifer’s stylist should similarly be punished.

    • StellaZafella

It may be Wang, but it’s all wrong.
      Bang the gong.

      • Oh, nicely done, Stella!

      • That sounds like a line from the old movie, “Murder By Death”: Wang wrong. But I agree, Vera must have awakened on the wrong side of the bed the day she let this piece out of the studio.

    • MilaXX

This is just a short version of Kerry Washington’s dress from the Met Ball. Nonetheless, not Jen’s dress.

    • LuisaNL

      This. OUT!

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

Her hips are a cocoon. An emo lace butterfly will soon emerge.

  • Kelly Sowers

I think this is more in than out. The dress actually gives her a figure. The matchy clutch and bump-it hair are out for me though.

  • So not flattering, from the top of her head to the tips of her toes. O to the UT OUT!

  • ToniMacAttack

Oooooout. That bottom is seriously unflattering. Which is so weird, since she’s skinny and hella-fucking tall. Somehow it still look horrifying.

    • Sobaika

A bad dress is a bad dress, no matter who wears it.

  • lehen

she looks like a mid-90s bridesmaid at a goth wedding.

  • Lori

OUT. Exhausted or not, T&Lo are not wrong about this. She’s very pretty, but she’s the only thing about this look that is.

  • Sara h

She looks like a style confused tween going to her first dance. The hair, the accessories, the dress, ESPECIALLY the make up are all wrong

  • mmebam

I have seen a lot worse, so I am inclined to give it an In.

However, I think the hair is bad. And I think that you can either have the draping and skirt or lace thing up top. But not both, and I actually kind of like the draping.

  • Carina Green

    OPI’s new nail color: Hype-othermia

  • Introspective

the hair?? the horror!!! the prom shoes and clutch?? disaster!! the makeup?? unapparent!!!

the dress is a meh. but that styling?? failure all around. time for some gays to get fired jennifer.

  • Haley Buchanan

Sorry, but poor Jennifer is on my irrational celeb hatred list. With that said, I also don’t care for the “trickiness” of the dress, and think she’s one of those women who tends to look better in more casual, less fussy looks. One plus one equals OUT in this case.

  • quiltrx

Out. I actually like both of the fabrics. This hits at a really weird place…somehow I think if the ‘inside’ part of the skirt were longer, the ‘wings’ would look more in proportion. I also don’t like how the shoulders go inward-gives a kind of pinched look to the neck area.

  • Guest

    That is a fright!

  • ChelseaNH

The dress is an overworked folded napkin, the bumpit hair does nothing for her features, the winged eye makes her look squinty and the shoes are stumpifying. OUT! Go home and start over.

  • OUT. Because OBVIOUS reasons.

  • charlotte

She could be Hailee Steinfeld’s older sister. This would be an OUT on both of them.

  • MzzPants

Oy. She’s waiting for her prom date and the limo to show up and take her to Applebee’s for dinner. And that hairstyle isn’t dead yet??? It’s giving this poor girl ‘horseface’. Vera…girlfriend…I can get those fabrics at my local Joann’s…and probably a pattern too. You’re better then that. OUT.

  • Candigirl1968

The shape – nipped waist with color contrast on the sides – is a good idea, but everything else is a fail. The drapery heaviness of the skirt and the dreariness of the black, white and grey top just aren’t attractive. Adding to it are poor makeup (which just looks like a lot of bronzer and slapping some wings on her eyes to make her face look dressier than a day at the beach) and a joyless clutch.

  • christinewithanx

Is 80s cocktail Star Trek even a thing? Ugh, this is not making my lunch sit well.

  • Cameron Turner

  • carnush

The shape is awful, the material is tacky, the shoes look cheap. Ugly prom dress. Such a shame since she is tall and stunning.

  • PeggyOC

Out. Chronically style challenged. I love her smirk, but this dress looks like a Disney princess had an emo crisis on her body.

  • l_c_ann

Two colored cheap hair, shiny face, dour dress, ugly toenails, really bad, except for her smile, which the stylist couldn’t mess up.

  • VeryClaire

I’m not getting why everyone hates the hair so much.

  • aykhan

    Out! Nothing works here.

  • CeeQ

The hair is awful – major cone head AND makes her face look even longer/narrow than it already is. Being a long faced bitch myself, I wouldn’t have gone THAT high on the hair – it’s not very flattering and looks quite severe/comical.

The eyes & eyebrows – what the hell? They look really pulled back…..almost to the side of her head. It’s probably cuz of the hair. It’s all just not working.

The dress is underwhelming – basically an elaborate bridesmaid’s dress, with similar figure distorting effects. The clutch is a bore and those shoes zzzzzzz.

The pedicure is an afterthought and a horrid colour, her toes look like a corpse.

OUT. (Wow. I AM a long faced bitch)

  • Rand Ortega

She’s an incredible actress (why she hasn’t won a single Emmy is baffling) w/ a gorgeous body so I may be biased. This dress is terrible. It’s pictured next to the definition of fugly in the dictionary. It should be blasted into space & sent to the ISS & jettisoned through the Space Toilet w/ the rest of the shit that passes through that mechanism.

  • MilaXX

OUT! Not her dress. She’s not fashion-y enough to get away with exaggerated hips.

  • RebeccaKW

Out. Holy cow, is that thing unflattering. Her legs look 6 inches long. That hair elongates her face, and her face is already long-you don’t need to accentuate it, girl. The pattern on the bust might be pretty if I wasn’t worried it was going to catch on fire if she wanders near a candle or something. The shoes are from Walmart.

  • jw_ny

I don”t dislike the dress, but think it’s more suited to a tall stick thin woman….like Zoe Saldana. Her hair and makeup is what really tipped this over the edge into the OUT category tho (well…that and the enormous bubble butt the dress gives her.) The added height of her hair, and with it being so taut, makes her head look really long…coneheadish. Cat eyes bug me here as well the lack of lip color.

  • SugarSnap108

    NO. Head-to-toe no.

  • mjude

    hell NO

  • Jangle57

Oh this is all kinds of bad though to throw in something positive, I do like the purse. OUT

  • decormaven

Aww, this is an unfortunate look. Such a severe look does not suit her, and the hairstyle does no favors. Only kiddies under age 10 should wear that shade of nail polish in a pedi, and only when it’s sleepover night.

  • GillianHolroyd

She seems to be going for a semi-formal junior prom look and she succeeded in that.

  • conniemd

Out because of the styling. The dress is difficult, but it required some FUN styling like a kickass pair of red shoes and an interesting clutch and hair not so severely styled. She looks prim and proper in a dress that isn’t prim and proper.

  • Maya

  • Nothing wrong with the dress or accessories, but that …complete head is wrong. OUT just because of that.

  • Mazenderan

Out. She looks like upholstery. Plus, the hair and makeup is pretty poor.

  • amber.

Kerry Washington would have slayed this. She would have slayed the gloves too.

  • Agatha Guilluame

    OUT! Because they hate you.

  • Erica_Vuitton

This is what happens when stylists push starlets into the new collections two seasons too early. Gothic wrapping paper realness. It’s JUNE honey give us some color! OUT

  • Tatiana Luján

    Bad prom dress. Out.

  • plinkiedoodle

  • Joanna Strange

Can we talk about how her hair, along with her chin, make her look like a Conehead? I think only Jane Curtain can really pull that look off. She looks like a conehead with elf ears. Her stylist should be shot. OUT. And that dress gives her too much hip.

  • E. D.

OUT. The skirt is from the 80s and the top and hair are bad 90s.

  • marlie

OUT. Her hair and makeup are horribly unflattering, and the dress doesn’t fit her proportions correctly, on top of being flat out ugly.

  • Joyce VG

She is tall and skinny but the shape of the dress makes her look untall and unskinny. It’s also not a great color combo for her. She’s very fair and the black and silver do nothing for her complexion. Also her hair style makes her look like a SNL Conehead daughter. She’s probably a lovely person though.

  • AmeliaEve

OUT – this just doesn’t suit her. She has that tall athletic figure that looks great in simple, geometric, Calvin Klein-y stuff. This dress is too busy and gimmicky, and the mixed hemlines are extra unflattering.

  • It looks like one of those cheap, polyester banquet napkins folded into some sort of frivolous form. And I hate her hair. It’s really the dress though – awful.

  • VioletFem

OUT. This is terrible from the hair (which looked better when it was shorter) to the shoes.

  • Dagney

If I were a stylist, I would strictly prohibit anyone from wearing any nail color other than clear, red, or light shimmers. Even the Katy Perry’s of the world. The gamut of blues, greens, and decorative nail crap looks so Princessy-My-Prett-Pony-Birthday-Party-At-The-Mall. Especially on the toes. Just, no.

  • etselec

    Bubble-butt, bubble-head.

  • snarkykitten

are you there, God? it’s me, snarkykitten. Can you please banish peplum to the bowels of hell?

  • flamingoNW

OUT. The shoes are the thing that took it over the line.

  • Susan Velazquez

    I vote IN

    • Annarosa

I vote IN too. I don’t like the hair at all, but the dress is not so bad and I like the make up.
      I want those gloves.

  • crash1212

OUT. The Fug Girls said it might’ve been OK without the “ass shell” and I can’t disagree with them. One ugly dress. Whoever created the owl look around her eyes with too light concealer should be flogged. GAH…this is just so bad. I’ll leave it at that.

  • julnyes

Hair – helmet with a horsetail
    Makeup – bland
Dress – it looks like one ugly lace dress is trying to escape out of an ugly satin dress.
    Shoes – blah
    Jewelry – nice
Pedicure – blue toenails? really hunty?

    So she is an OUT

  • melaamartin

OUT. I can’t fathom any defenses for an IN, I’m perplexed by the suggestion of deliberation.

  • Easy OUT – but to be entirely fair, it didn’t look that great on the model either.

  • jmorino08

OUT! That is not a flattering hairstyle or make up job in the slightest and the dress is all wrong for her. Also, she looks like she might want to punch me in that first picture!

  • nannypoo

She’s pretty, but with her long face and that odd upturned eye makeup her helmet hair is making her head look as long as her torso.

  • steeg of their own

OUT. Basically everything about this is wrong. Whoever did her makeup and hair obviously hates her as much as whoever picks her clothes.

  • another_laura

Out! Reasons: black is not for her; dress is ugly in any color (open-the-stage-curtain skirt, blech); blue toenails; bad hairdo; needs a lip.

  • Write On

She has a bustle that starts at her navel and wraps all the way around her hips. That’s an OUT!

  • Sara__B

Egads. OUT! Everything is wrong — the silhouette, the proportions, the makeup, the hair. (Maybe the clutch is okay.)

  • Imasewsure

This is too THAT bad. Out!!

  • VicD

OMG. so freaking OUT. Jeezus – hair, shoes, shape, fabric, length … in no particular order of awfulness.

  • berkeleygirl

    OUT – gawd-awful…

  • TSkot

    Ugly dress. OUT

  • Anathema_Device

Out. The hair and makeup are not flattering on her at all. The dress is in meh territory for me, but…wow…that hair is elongating her face in a really strange way.

  • watchmeboogie

    HIDDY. All of it. Out!

  • bertkeeter

Ms. WANG continues to try an be something other than a wedding dress designer.

  • Aaminah Khan

I actually like the dress (though not on her). It’s eeeeeeeeverything else that’s not working for me. The hair, no. The makeup, basically as unflattering as it could possibly have been. The shoes, snooooore. Very, very OUT.

  • Louise Bryan

Out, but mostly because the proportions are so very off. I cannot…it’s …. Lose the bump-it!!

  • Sagecreek

    Out. Outski, Outerific, Out.

  • kittentoes

This was bad at the 1986 Winter Formal, and it’s bad now.

  • demidaemon

That dress will be OUT always, no matter who wears it. The rest of the styling–bump-it mermaid hair, nonexistent make-up, boring accessories—just add to the bad. OUT OUT and OUT.

  • Jen

I expect her to say “We are from France” any second now.

no worthy comments for the prom dress.

  • ankali

OUT. I’m not sure if the dress would work for her on its own, but it’s a moot point with that hair and those shoes, which make her look incredibly juvenile.

  • bailey

    ummmm out.

  • bd73

hm. put the damn gloves on. they make the whole look. and those shoes are too demure. edgy accessories is what makes this work. she should have gone nuts on the hair – just finger in the socket crazy and big. and dramatic makeup. …i think this is ginnifer goodwin’s dress. she’d know what to do with it.

  • OUT. She’s a tall athletic woman in the vein of Jessica Biel or Evangeline Lily or any number of those action movie women who kick butt. That dress is way too fussy for her and the hair and eye makeup only serves to distort her bone structure. Stick to Calvin Klein and minimalist dresses that show off the muscles you got from being a cop on Dexter – I’m sure they’re fabulous.

  • TheAmericaness

First, I don’t understand the point of the collection. At all. Second, I thought Ms. Jennifer’s toes were frostbitten! I realize of course that that color of nail polish is not the color of frost bite, but those shoes with her wee toes peaking out in that color did not look good and I didn’t get how it was supposed coordinate. All around headache. Poor dear. 🙁

  • Janet B

Unflattering length, figure hiding shape, dull hair, ordinary makeup: OUT

  • Andrea Lentz

IN because really the outfit isn’t that bad. Her face looks painful though.

  • Laura Osborne

Her outfit is fine . . . but her makeup looks weird. It’s the makeup that kills the look, I think.

  • FancyPhilly

Out. That is just a really ugly dress. Period. End of story. Fin. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

  • JP

Except for the shoe, OUT. The dress looks like it got stuck at some weird halfway point while being donned.

  • StarburstLady

Skirt’s proportions are off, making her look hippy and stumpy. Wide flare of the bodice detail doesn’t help in that department, either. Shoes are boring, yet her feet look tortured, and the nail polish doesn’t match. Hair is a mess. And if ever there was a girl who didn’t need to wear a gigantic winged eye, it’s this lady. The whole outfit looks like something a 16-year-old wears to the Fall Formal. OUT.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • shorty j

It looks like her torso is covered in googly eyes. This would normally be a perk, but no.

  • Diana Giese

Looks like she is going to a suburban wedding. OUT.

  • Lexie

    Two words: Junior Prom.

  • Kristobel

OUT. It’s a brocadextravaganza! And not in a good way. She just needs some silver eyeshadow and this would be totally 90’s homecoming dress.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Well all I can say is when I clicked onto this page I thought “oh dear, that’s just not a very attractive person, poor thing.”

  • Qdahling

OUT. Besides the black velvet eye sore of a dress, my eyes go directly to open toed shoes with blue nail polish? No. Turn around, go home and get some gays to help you. It shouldn’t be this hard for a tall pretty woman to look good on the red carpet!

  • Io Vee

Makeup gay was ANGRY. . .

  • PeaceBang

I’m trying to come up with a “Dexter” joke and I just can’t. I’m too bummed out by this fugly outfit. DEB!

  • lalahartma

    Out. Noooo.

  • MandyM

Could they make her look any worse? Her hair is bad, her makeup is bad, her dress is bad, her shoes are boring. I guess her purse is OK. Her jaw is too strong to wear her hair back like that. She should wear it down and without the bump-it. That dress is not doing her any favors but it’s not even cute on the model so she just needed to start over there and choose a different dress. And she has such gorgeous skin that is just ruined with that make-up job. She needs a dewy fresh look without the exaggerated eyeliner and stronger cheek and lip.
