IN or OUT: Hailee Steinfeld in Suno at CFDA Awards

Posted on June 04, 2013

We don’t know… we wanted to like it more than we actually like it.

Hailee Steinfeld attends the 2013 CFDA Fashion Awards at Lincoln Center in New York City in a custom Suno top and skirt embellished with Swarovski crystals and paired with Jimmy Choo ‘Linda’ platform sandals and Jennifer Meyer jewelry.

Jimmy Choo ‘Linda’ Platform Sandal

It’s cute and delicately sparkly in a very pretty, youthful way. We don’t mind the strip of belly. In fact, we kind of like that top on her, but we hate the shape of the skirt and where the hem hits. We think we’d like it better if it hung a little straighter from her hips and came down to her ankles. Which reminds us, those shoes seem too big and heavy for the look. Also: basset hound hair. Never a good idea.

We realize we’re being harsh, but that fabric is very pretty and something really Hailee-appropriate could have been done with it. As it is, this looks like a bunch of half-baked to outright bad ideas for her.

Vote Now!

IN! Stop being so cranky, bitches. She looks cute.

OUT! You are so right, bitches. She looks awkward.

Heather Graham’s tack-a-ho pink leather and lace dress was appropriately voted OUT by the minions with opinions.

Out! That top with black pants & better shoes would look smart & sassy. Also, the hair is horrid.

    • Carla_Charlton

      And those nails are awful.

      • http://twitter.com/kendallbrunson SassyMcFrench

Yes! Why do women/girls get square claws?

        • Heather

          Ugh I know. Very OC.

        • Sobaika

          *shudders violently*

          Those nails are pure fug.

        • RebeccaKW

I prefer the squared off nail. However, hers are very obviously fake, and that’s my issue with them. While having fake nails is up to each person, I feel like if you are paying money for them, they should at least not scream ‘FAKE NAILS.’

      • AshleyDeHaye

        Lee Press-on Claws.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

I just wish they had put the sparkles on the entire length of the skirt. Now I’m doubting Hailee’s commitment to sparkle motion.

      • majorbedhead

I was going to say the same thing. It gets very drab without the sparkles. The length of the skirt doesn’t help, either.

OUT for me because of lack of sparkles. And the nails. And the hair. And the shoes.

        • random_poster

          What majorbedhead said.

I may just repeat that alliteration all day!

          • majorbedhead

I love it when people agree with me. :D People should do that more often. OK, my KIDS should do it more often. I’d settle for that.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

IN, although I would like the skirt shorter and fuller and I hate that her toes match her lips but thank god her toes don’t match her fingers.

    • AlisonS

IN – She’s pulling it off. Besides throw this on anyone younger/older it looks tacky or weird.

      • Spicytomato1

        Yes, exactly. IN.

      • drdarke

I agree with everything TLo said is wrong with it – but, I think it looks good on her anyway. She’s the right age for that outfit – it’s a bit “Young Girl Being Presented to Police Society”, which fits given we’re talking a girl who’s sixteen years old. (As I said in the Ashley Olsen comments, I’m re-reading Georgette Heyer as literary therapy – and it’s kind of amazing how quickly one wishes for a quizzing-glass, a witty retort on the lips and a horse to bestride!)

        Marginal IN.

    • Jessica O’Connell

OUT. I’m not a fan of the strip of belly showing but it’s not terrible. Still, it just doesn’t look very put together and I HATE her nails.

    • dashransome

      IN – I like it

    • Diego!

I hate those nails, but it’s an IN to me :P

    • crash1212

OUT. The skirt kills it. Beautiful fabric though. Also…the hair? Seriously either do something with it or get it cut.

      • CT14

I’m with you. Make the skirt shorter though, and it’s long past time to do something with that hair.

If she has to have it that long, it can’t just lie there like puppy ears. She’s too old for that look anymore.

    • Caitlin O’Brien

      IN!

    • Susan

      In, hush up cranky beyatches.

      • Rhonda Shore

hey, I don’t read T-LO and the kittens cause they’re gonna love everything!!! lol

    • almondemy

IN: She is washed, dressed and not espousing craziness on social media. And the Gestalt look is adorable. She can do no wrong. :)

    • decormaven

Out. Shoes too chunky, hair too straight, and a pox on sparkly nails.

    • Jangle57

Hate the hair but otherwise I basically like it – IN

    • Rhonda Shore

OUT! The skirt is cut all wrong and looks dowdy, not youthful. Don’t care for the shoes or the nails – a patent leather kitten-heeled slingback and blush pink nail (or traditional french mani) would have been better. Don’t hate the hair because she’s young although a high-ish pony would have been cute.

    • ashtangajunkie

IN. The hair is bad, but she does look very cute anyway.

    • Annarosa

OUT. you’re right about the skirt and the basset hound hair (XD)

    • Christine Hart

In, cute. Even like the shoes.

    • Jessica Freeman

OUT. It could be so much better.

    • mjude

i like it more than i hate it so IN

    • GoAwayKardash

      IN. Adorable in every way.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

In. Cute. Flaws, which you’ve pointed out (although you omitted going off on the nails–you should have), but cute.

    • MilaXX

IN with quibbles. I wish her hair were in the back and the skirt didn’t gather or pleat at the waist.Otherwise I think it’s pretty and youthful.I LOVE that fabric.

Looking at it again, I don’t mind the skirt length, but I wish it was more of a simple pencil skirt cut.

      • Introspective

that’s the fix this needs! a little less volume on the skirt and it would be a knockout. but in general, this does look beautiful. i like it more than i dont. so in for me with a small i.

    • AmeliaEve

IN. Despite some very specific quibbles, the overall effect is cute, young, and summery.

That said, I hate the mani with this, mostly because it does NOT seem young at all. And she is not SO young that she couldn’t start shaping her brows a bit, unless she wants to get into a glowering contest with Zosia Mamet.

    • MeadMaven

Now that I can’t un-see Christmas ornaments in the pattern of the fabric, it’s an OUT for me.

    • elemspbee

In. except for the hair, which is much of what T’Lo quibble is about.

    • Deb_Lynn

1950’s Ukrainian Christmas ornaments. But in a very nostalgic, childlike fantasy good kind of way.

    • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

I’m going to say IN although I’m not entirely sold on the shape of that skirt. I like it overall. I like the matchiness of it too, in this instance, since if it was less matched it would have been too much with the sparklies. You know, I’d have liked that skirt a lot more if it was hemmed where the sparkles ended.

    • tereliz

IN! Everything but the nails. I love this look. I just wish the crystals went all the way to the hem of the skirt because I think it would make the fabric hang better.

Amazing color and pattern and cute shoes.

    • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

Blech those fingernails! Love the color on her toes though.

    • marlie

This is a tepid “in” from me. The skirt would have been much better if it was floor length (or, much shorter), but I don’t mind the way that it hangs. I also love the shoes with this. I *definitely* would have given her a hair makeover, though.

    • pattycap11

IN but agree about the skirt and shoes. Otherwise, fresh and pretty look.

    • http://twitter.com/Glam_Dixie Glam Dixie

That is some sister wife hair, trim your ends at least. And those nails look like press ons. Awful, but I don’t hate the outfit, wish the skirt wasn’t so pleated at the top but otherwise it’s ok. Also wax your brows, dear. Reluctant IN

      • AnneElliot

I love your “reluctant in.” I’m mentally filing that away for a future BK comment.

    • seelebrennt

those nails are an abomination unto the lord. the hair is terrible that way. it pains me, but OUT. the outfit could have totally worked for her. she’s a really gorgeous girl and can make some quirky looks work for her, but the negative totally outweigh the positive in this one.

    • OrigamiRose

I was trying to find something positive to say but honestly, I hate it from head to toe. OUT :(

    • Carrieanno

      She’s adorable. IN.

    • kmk05

OUT! I actually quite like the outfit, but her hair and makeup and nails (oh good lord of cupcakes, that lip colour and the nails) all make me shudder.

    • BrooklynBomber

Totally agree about shirt shape/hem length, but still it’s very cute. IN

    • paintedfish

yeah, i’m not liking the Blue Lagoon hair.

      • AnneElliot

YES!!! Now I’m having flashbacks to Brooke Shields and whatsisname.

    • Deedles

Ditch the consumptive eye makeup, totally wrong shade of lipstick and cut about six inches of deadness off of the hair. Then, I will consider IN or OUT.

    • beebee10

IN not perfect but not out.

    • conniemd

I love the material of the dress enough to forgive the hair. I’d have preferred a dress to the two piece with the too gathered a skirt. So a tepid IN as she looks cute and happy with her look.

    • Pannyx

Utterly out. The fabric looks like some old sheets my grandmother owned, and the strip of skin looks tacky.

    • Katerina

In! I agree with you guys about the shoes but not the skirt. Only a young woman her age could get away with the dowdy comfortable slouchiness and make it look boho. I love it.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

IN. There are quibbles, but she is out pretty-ing them.

    • l_c_ann

      Out.

Take the glitter off the dress, and the bottom of the skirt becomes apronly, which is too close to matronly.

    • StrandedFashionista

I like the look, but those nails are straight up boojie.

    • YoungSally

The fabric is great where it’s embellished — but the print looks like bad curtains on its own. How how they managed that I will never know.

    • AnneElliot

Oh, honey, no. You’re adorable but even her youth and cuteness cannot compensate for this sad, sparkly sisterwife outfit. Top’s cute but it needs skinny black pants and a cute sandal or bootie.

I will not even comment on the hair and nails. OUT!!

    • LipstickForPigs

Out. Orange lipstick makes her face look dirty. Hair unflattering around the face, and for the love of Pete trim those ends. Fuck Pinterest for bringing back “nail art”.

    • formerlyAnon

In. Only the young can get away with this, but she is young. For the red carpet, the hair bothers me more than the length of the skirt or the shoes.

    • nannypoo

I think it would be cute on her if it were above the knee and the shoes were less heavy. Also, a pony tail.

    • ballerinawithagun

Out. Do those ornaments on the skirt belong to Tim Burton? Nightmare Before Christmas Orange Christmas Tree Ornaments??? The whole ensemble looks like a be-dazzled 7th grade sewing project. Definitely the wrong shoes.

The only cute part is her perfect teen age belly showing. That sounded lewd, sorry, I only meant that is the age when you CAN show your belly.

She is still adorable. Experiment and make mistakes when you’re young!

    • WendyD

      TRIM YOUR HAIR.

    • FancyPhilly

IN. In spite of the nails and the hair. Love the fabric actually, Christmas ornaments be dammed.

    • Watts

OUT for the pure and simple reason that her hair is longer than her shirt. I don’t care for that look on anybody.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I don’t mind the belly strip, because it’s not that much, and she is a teenager. I just don’t like the over all “bed sheet” kind of print, and the general shapelessness of the outfit itself.

    • PastryGoddess

I like it…one someone else I’d rip it to shreds

    • Miss WKS

That skirt: the side seam and hem would garner a D in my pattern making class. The fit is abominable.
How could her stylist do that to her?
      Personally, I LOVE the shoes.
      The fabric is fabulous.

    • SophieCollier

      IN. She looks cute.

    • tindalo

IN. She’s as cute as a button.

    • Richard Harris

In the future, historians will look back on the sheer number of celebrities sporting their belly strips and think we went through a global fabric shortage.

    • Florrie Brafman

      In!

    • PeggyOC

      Out. It’s just not working.

    • $11431954

It’s an out for me. Party on the top, sister wife on the bottom. A sleek pony tail would have worked better. The fabric is kinda cool though.

    • ErmengardeGreen

Hair, makeup and nails are all really bad (though the nails are (a) unavoidable this year and (b) not actively distracting). I’d have like this if it were styled with a wink at Carmen Miranda. Not with actual head fruit, but with hair up and a fun but not distracting wedge sandal, and the skirt either to the ankle or to the knee. (So, out.)

    • bailey

Out. the print looks like christmas ornaments.

    • silly little thumb

OUT. She is beautiful, but the top with the matching skirt is too much. One or the other.

    • frannyprof

Out. Unlike you, I don’t like the strip of belly. Not for an awards event. Maybe for a party/premiere/store opening/magazine cover launch/perfume reveal/whatever else these starlets get paid to do.

    • Sara__B

I wonder if the skirt didn’t get crystal-embellished to the hem because Suno assumed it would get shorted about two feet. Everything else I don’t like about this outfit and its styling can be chalked up to the fact that she’s 16, so even though the gathered-waist skirt, her toe and fingernail colors, her lipstick, the shoes, and especially the hair are all wrong, she’s still IN.

    • lamamu

IN! She’s young, cute and age appropriate.

    • Candigirl1968

OUT. It just doesn’t come together.

    • Tracy_Flick

OUT. The top looks like a first effort in Home Ec, and I hate the way the skirt gathers, and the embellishments trail off. It just doesn’t work.

    • melanie0866

OUT. Looks like something made at home.

    • j_anson

Definitely an IN for me. Eh, she’s young.

    • JP

The top needs to be more fitted in addition to the skirt. If this were all one piece and the hem was a skotch higher, it would be an in. I hate to pick on a kid, but out.

    • carnush

      IN. It’s cute.

    • SewingSiren

Love this top to toe. Shorty top with modest skirt, it’s a good combination.

    • mmebam

      Nope

    • unbornfawn

The skirt needs to be shorter and maybe a bit fuller at the hem. How come she couldn’t get a straight part in her hair. Hate to do this to a young one. OUT.

    • Bethany Roullett

I can see your quibbles, but I still think its an IN. Not for everyone, but good for her.

    • ralish

Please trim your hair and your nails. Thanks.

    • lalahartma

      Out, for sure.

    • PeaceBang

She’s clean, pretty, put together, sober and super talented. All good things! The shoes and pedi are gorgeous. The outfit is choppy and fits a bit badly and I deeply hope she gets a hair cut. However, I can’t go out with this one. She’s a lovely young lady and this is a nice outfit with some fit issues. Being in a loving auntie mood today, I shan’t even mention the ATROCIOUS nails. IN!

    • mhlmh

IN. not perfect, but cute enough.

    • Vickiefantastico

I’m voting OUT, although I so want to vote in. She’s young, dressed appropriately for her age – i.e., fun colors and style with proper coverage – and she’s always seemed like a kid with her head on straight. So refreshing for Hollywood. Yet she looks terrible. The shape of the skirt is shapeless, the gap of skin just doesn’t look right, and the hair is dreadful. I’m so sorry, my dear, but it’s an OUT.

    • CatherineRhodes

      OUT.

I want to get a sharp pair of shears and take two inches off her ratty ends.

    • RebeccaKW

In. This is a great look for her, skirt issues aside.

    • julnyes

OUT for the hair, skirt, nails and shoes. I think the top is cute however and her face is precious.

    • Cousin_Rose

In, but the skirt does look like a home ec project.

    • MarissaLG

IN, but those nails almost ruined it.

In – sort of. Her hair and face are cute cute cute. The outfit has potential, but dat skirt is odd. The nails are the fakest looking I’ve seen in ages. And gasp! TLo actually likes a strip of belly skin!

    • TheAmericaness

IN – due to age. nails are ick, but are usually never a decider on the “in or out” factor unless they had rockets shooting from the tips or something. the shoes ALMOST made it an out, but age weighed heavier on the scales this time around. I’m neutral on the hair.

    • amanda lynn

      IN; cute.

    • LaSylphide

In. Too long for her age, but the crop top lightens it up a lot.

    • fairi5fair

      Out. That’s all.

    • bd73

in. cute except for the press-ons. some kid stars have parental modesty restrictions. maybe that’s why it’s so long.

    • demidaemon

OUT. I must disagree about the midriiff baring. I dislike it. I am also not particularly feeling the fabric, print, or the silhouette. Her hair and amke-up is about all I can approve.

    • VicD

      IN ya cranky bitches ;-)

    • kimiakay

In. She’s young, she sparkles, color’s good for her. And she can rock that crop top.

    • LadyLuck777

In. Girl found a cute outfit in grandma’s attic. Could have done without granny’s shoes though.

ugh out so unfortunate because a different attitude better posture and less tacky nails could have taken this to a respectable IN

    • http://www.facebook.com/rocki.rhodes Rocki Rhodes

In! She does look cute. Maybe, if the skirt was longer, to floor like a ball gown then it would be Fantastic!

    • Mona_Visa

Hm. In- just barely. The orange-y goodness wins me over. The skirt is dumpy though.

    • Noelle_H

Way to take her pretty, youthful energy and turn it into “grandma”. The skirt shape is really bad, and the lack of sparkles at the bottom just makes that interesting fabric look more “Kmart” to me, I have to say. I actually think the shoes are pretty cute, as is the top. The basset-hound hair isn’t helping the look, but a different shape & length on the skirt (and commitment to sparkles!) would have turned this around for me. OUT. (Let us never speak of those horrid nails again…)

    • sagecreek

Too late to vote? Anyway, IN. She’s so cute.

    • Haley Buchanan

OUT. I like the top but the skirt is not flattering. The length and the cut are not flattering. Oh, and the nails are AWFUL.

    • MandyM

Out! Everything you said plus the orange lips…. Just no.
