Hayden Panettiere at the Giorgio Armani Show

Posted on June 27, 2013

We’ll start off with the good news. Her hair and makeup look really great. And we give her a lot of credit for really trying something a little outside her comfort zone.

Giorgio Armani Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Nikola Romanova

Emporio Armani Open Toe Sandal With Patent Effect And Tassels

That’s all the good news we have for today. The problem here is one of proportion. She’s simply not tall enough to carry off that top or those pants effectively. It’s stumpifying her. And those look to be some mighty tough shoes to pull off. We want to believe there’s an outfit out there just waiting for them (because we have to admit, we’re kind of intrigued by them) but for the life of us, we can’t picture what it would look like.

But we really have to hand it to her. We did a tiny gasp when we saw her because it’s such a different look for her.

cool shoes, the top is WHACK.

  • MannahattaMamma

Each of those bows is the size of her head. The pants would be okay if the bows weren’t so huge. She could use one as a life raft.

    • lexilexi

Are we looking at the same pants? I don’t think they look huge.. maybe even a little tight in places..

      • MoHub

She didn’t say the pants were huge. She said the bows were huge. And they are.

        • lexilexi

          Thanks! My bad.

  • Sobaika

It fits her strangely. I’d be okay with this (mostly because it’s such a change for her) if the top didn’t appear to be floating away from her body.

    • MoHub

I think part of the problem—but only a small part—is that she has boobs, and the runway model doesn’t, so the bows lie flat on the model and sit weirdly on Hayden.

    • drdarke

“Look, Boss! De plane! De plane!”

Wow – that top fits her like The Liberty Bell. And those bows – I’m sure they’re going to rise up from her chest and attach themselves to her face any second…. ::shudder!:: The shoes are the wrong silver for the top, and don’t really look good on her anyway.

That said – she looks confident and sassy here. Too bad her outfit doesn’t…..

  • plinkiedoodle

I think she looks great, left of center, stylish.

  • hughman

Those are Etsy bows waiting to happen.

  • those things on her boobs look like they’re made from cables used in a car engine. leftovers from the pr car parts challenge. that top is way too heavy for those skimpy skinny pants.

    • norseofcourse

I was thinking they were black licorice from the candy shop challenge.

      • largishbearishAtlish

I def saw PR Challenge in those bows as well…brrrr

        • AnneElliot

          Extension cords!!

  • Juliette Barnes would have people’s heads on a platter for this.

  • That is impossibly matronly for someone who is 23 years old. (ETA: HFS, 23?! Doesn’t it feel like she’s been around forever?!)

    • Jo_Miller

Hayden started on “One Life to Life” at age 4 1/2, so essentially, yes, she has been around forever, in acting parlance. She does need more height to pull off that outfit.

  • barbarienne

I don’t think that top would work on anyone. Even on the model I want to tug it down a bit before she chokes on the top bow.

  • Man did you guys ever nail it. Girl is way too short for that look. She needs another 6 inches of height, and not just in her shoes.

  • StellaZafella

Per the shoes…something with a panniette…ala an updated Marie Antoinette.

    • Something from that Chanel collection in the fountains, perhaps.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

A for effort, D- for execution.

  • madge

ooh her face looks amazing. i like everything from the waist down — especially those shoes! covet! but that’s an awfully weird top. it either needs to be a little less boxy, or made out a flowier fabric so it drapes, i think …

  • Ceece

I want to see those shoes accenting a plaid something. They are like Diva loafers or drag prep and they deserve more than those pants in my opinion.

  • carnush

    Hair and makeup are stunning.

  • GillianHolroyd

Those bows need to be reduced to about 65% but it also looks like she’s standing with her back arched so that the top pops out, or maybe it askew on her shoulders.

  • random_poster

I like all the individual pieces but the top, and I don’t think a taller woman could save that ridiculous top, either. Her hair and make up are perfect for her. I totally dig the shoes, and am now trying to come up with the outfit to go with them.

  • MilaXX

The only thing I don’t like about this are those giant bows on the top. They are too big for her tiny frame. Otherwise I think she looks cute.

    • H2olovngrl

Yes! She is soooo close, but that blouse is definitely wearing hrr, not the other way around.

  • Emily Smith

I kind of like this, I wonder if it looked better in person. She looks pleased as punch with herself too.

  • stubbornthoughts

    So unflattering.

On a brighter note, I’m loving all the TLO watermark/branding/square thingymajiggies!

    • OMG I just noticed them! They’re really fabulous. I’d love a pin to add to my collection of random-ass pins. I’d throw a couple bucks at one, TLo, consider it! <3

      • AnneElliot

TLo needs an online shop for the Bitter Kittens, STAT!!!

        • Yes! Plus, I bet they could get really cute lapel pins made for themselves to wear in their jacket boutonnieres – I’m imagining a somewhat more expensive enamel metal pin for them, and standard button-maker buttons for the masses.

  • PeaceBang

I think she looks head-to-toe adorable. The huge bows are giving me LIFE. She’s got the butch hair and sassitude to carry off the nutty hugeness of them, and I love the shoes. I think the whole thing works because it’s in such an elegant palette. If she had even a touch of color the top would have gone right into Clown Town. Brava!!

    • In_Stitches

I’m with you; I LOVE it. She’s pulling it all off without looking like a 70 year old hostess at a Chinese food restaurant.

  • I think that top isn’t for anyone with a significant bust. So boxy and so much heavy embellishment right over the chest – it looks like it’s structured like a barrel.
I love the shoes, but I love loafer/brogue inspired heels. I’m thinking they’d be great with a pair of white skinny jeans and an embellished tank – sleek. So I suppose in theory, Hayden’s look should work (skinny pants, embellished “tank” in the most vehicular sense – that’s one aggressive tank) but the shapes aren’t working here because it’s not sleek enough.

I wonder if that top would work over a high-waisted pencil skirt… Hrm.

  • Kristobel

I kind of love this. The shoes are fug, but the well deployed lady-pant and a fun top are great. And I second that her hair and make-up look amazing.

  • Carol

This was not a top made for a woman with larger than size A breasts.

  • TheAmericaness

mmmmm.. licorice! Did Armani make that top so he could chew on licorice all day? Cause that seems legit to me…

  • Lesley

its very unflattering for her body type, its making her look really top heavy.. cover her head and her body looks like it belongs to an older woman.

  • Judy_S

Love the shoes. The top does not deserve to live, much less be worn.

  • Eva_baby

This outfit is a master class of bad proportion

  • desi_girl

That top is hideous! And the shoes remind me of ones that came with my Barbie.

  • Diego!

She looks like a teenage Barbie. She even painted her eyebrows the same way!

  • wonderdivaEtsy

I like the shoes taken in isolation, but with the rest of the outfit they initially struck me as grammy shoes. The entire outfit (and the hair) made me think of something that a good-looking, thin woman in her 70’s might wear well.

  • Candigirl1968

The pants might have worked with something less heavy.

  • Sara__B

The top fits her like an extremely fancy life jacket. Maybe she just needs to yank it down in the front or maybe it’s just not right for her. Send it to Diane Kruger and see if she can make it work.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Using my Sesame Street skills, does two titty bows mean she has four tittsies? ??

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

And don’t the bows traditionally go on the shoes and the tassels on the shoes go, well, somewhere else?

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Send me the shoes … I’ll find an outfit they work for, I promise!

  • Tess Danesi

Those bows are seriously creeping me out. All I see are hands, with too many fingers, grasping for her boobs. The shoes I find intriguing too though I cannot begin to think what to wear them with.

  • lobsterlen

I might have liked this without the bows. The bead work on that top is gorgeous. I love love love those shoes.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Lose the bows and I’ll like it better, but I too thought ‘too petite for that look’. The shoes are fab.

  • Anniebet

That’s a WTF blouse for the WTF blouse museum.

  • VictoriaDiNardo

Judy Garland costume for a dance number in a Minnelli musical. But with ballet flats.

    But I love the shoes.

  • JauntyJohn

As far as the shoes go — and they do, indeed, intrigue — what about with slim dark slacks (black? plum? a rich forest green?) with a sharp white shirt and a very tailored ladies’ tweed blazer? Let the tassels be the jumping off point for a slightly preppy twist? Echo the silver/gold tone of the shoes with the right belt and jewelery. (And preppy can mean an interesting broach, which we don’t get to see much).

As for the rest of the outfit, well, God bless her for standing tall. She is wearing those clothes, they are not wearing her, even if yes, I couldn’t agree more, the proportions are the problem.

  • It is, as you say, a question of proportions. That boxy top makes her look like she has a hugely long torso, and then the fit of the pants gives her really muscular thighs and skinny calves. The hair and makeup are excellent but she usually looks much more evenly proportioned.

  • IAmJ

I envy those eyebrows of hers.

  • KayEmWhy

I would have removed the bows especially with those tapered pants. Pretty makeup and first time she doesn’t look like a Dixie prom queen to end on a positive note.

  • appliquer

I think she looks adorable – except for the shoes.

  • largishbearishAtlish

I know! Its from an upcoming PR Challenge- “Make something that can be used as a floatation device”! at first glance I thought she was wearing a boating/floatation vest…

  • marlie

Her hair and makeup look great, but the top seems way too juvenile, even for her. And I hate the shoes.

  • CommentsByKatie

I think she looks great, actually…but I’m 5’2 myself so maybe my eyes glean over short girl proportion problems. 🙂

  • DominoEstella

    I think she looks cute.

  • Fordzo

From far away, the bows look like licorice.

  • berkeleygirl

Love her, but she needs to have a chat with Anna Kendrik, who’s also thimble-sized but always looks both modern and appropriate…

  • demidaemon

I’m sorry, but that topi is not for anyone. It’s hideous and WTF inducing.

  • MzzPants

    Flotation device.

  • AnneElliot

Those are some strange-looking bows. They look like they’re made out of extension cords from far away.

However, I love the shoes, and I normally despise peep-toes. Not sure if they go with the outfit, but I’d steal them if I knew where to find them.

  • JeWawa

The shoes need a bronze or charcoal pant, imho.

  • theblondette

    Da fuq is this, srsly.

  • kolokOlchik

Save the drum majorette, save the world!

  • Alison Jimenez

I’m kind of loving this …
