Emma Watson in Roland Mouret

Posted on June 04, 2013

We don’t quite know what to make of this look.

Emma Watson attends the premiere of ‘This Is The End’ in a Roland Mouret bustier paired with 3.1 Phillip Lim pants, Ferragamo pumps and Karma El Khalil from Roseark jewelry.

Roland Mouret Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Alexandra Martynova (CITY)

We really love the whole bottom half. The pants really suit her and the Minnie Mouse pumps work well with them. We tried to talk ourselves into loving that top but we’re having a more difficult time of it than we originally thought. Sure, it’s striking and has an interesting shape to it, but it looks like some sort high-fashion sky-diving or rock-climbing harness that she hasn’t put on correctly. If that was just a simple bandeau top with a pointed hem, we’d be all for it, but those big, strappy things are awkward and distracting.

And we’ve been silent long enough: What the HELL is going on with her “1992 news anchor” hair there? That looks kind of frumpy and aging to us.

Hey, how about that? Turns out, we DID know what to make of this look!

I like the bottom half and I can appreciate the top, I’m not sure they go together though.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Exactly! Neither half works, and they totally don’t go together.

  • Cz

I can’t tell if those pants are intentionally navy blue or just black with a hint of blue. In any case, it clashes with the… um, hip ribbons? I don’t know what those are either.

It’s a miss for Miss Watson.

Also, her hair is probably in that awkward growing out phase where she doesn’t know what to do with it. Clearly. The bobby pins by the ear are so 1980’s, and not in a cool ironic way.

    • tereliz

Definitely navy. I don’t mind the color palette. Just the proportions.

    • charlotte

I’m pretty sure her hair is longer and tucked in to make it look like that, thus I think she should have done something else wth it.

    • ballerinawithagun

Yes, hate the blue black with the black black, sometimes it is just the lighting. The pants on the model are really weird also. Why do you need so many seams on a print when they don’t serve any fitting purpose? The bustier that looks wrongly stiff and then seems to have a white Tee sticking out from underneath it.

    • ailujailuj

I think you might have missed the spring bulletin on bobby pins. THEY. ARE. BACK.

  • The best thing about the runway look were the pants. I don’t like the top at all.

    • drdarke

Yep, @mandyjane:disqus ! I really hope Emma Watson didn’t go in saying, “Hi, I need a look that makes my hips look huge in as unsightly a way as possible! Oh, and while you’re at it, can you style my hair so I look like an Eighties Weathergirl…?”

  • tereliz

The floppy bits at the waist just really throw off the proportions. Too bad, those pants fit her perfectly! The hair is not entirely awful.

  • erinbinek

I actually really like everything here. Very put together. Love the blue with the black.

  • sleepycat

I LOVE this. The hair looks really cool and space-age. Sorry, if you say this is 1990s, I will trust you, but all i remember from the 90s are white polos and navy pants/shorts. Sorry to make you feel old.

  • random_poster

I like the idea of the simple bandeau with pointed hem much better. Bottom is perfect. Her make-up is pretty. The in-between-lengths hair looks like the stylist didn’t quite know what to do with it.

Why didn’t Emma get the blue cooler/surf board back drop?

    • MilaXX

Pretty sure that’s a faux bob.

  • GorgeousThings

Man, that whole look is… unfortunate.

  • kim bunchalastnames

she kinda looks like she’s not real sure what to make of it, either.

  • Anniebet

Like the pants, especially the length and cuffs. That face is still one of the freshest and loveliest in all of the celebrity realm.

What I do not understand is the recent trend from designers that have to add extraneous loops and droops and drapes of fabric to seemingly every darned item that emerges from their showrooms.

    • ballerinawithagun

Extraneous loops, droops and drapes, perfect! I had commented similarly but not as perfectly on Zac Posen’s recent pieces.

      • l_c_ann

They found it takes too much fabric to make goiters?

  • MilaXX

I don’t hate the top or the bottom, but they don’t go together.

    • SugarSnap108

You’re right. They don’t go together at all. I think I could like the top paired with a pencil skirt.

  • nannypoo

Awful hair. And her pants seem to have a lot of room in the crotch.

  • hughman

    The top is Mugly.

    • MikeW_Vegas

“mugly” I see what you did there, clever man!

  • JasmineAM

Peggy Olson wants the name of her hair stylist.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Now see I like the top better vs the bottom. The non matching blacks of the top and the pants makes my OCD twitch. Those are almost navy they are so off. Nope. Nope. Nope. Plus this is a fun movie where celebs basically get offed one by one. A little less serious of a look would’ve been better. And just flat out more fun.

  • j_anson

This feels like she’s trying very hard to be a fashionista, but hasn’t quite figured it out yet. She seems to have pretty good natural taste, and she’s young, so I suspect she’ll figure it out eventually.

  • SewingSiren

    Love the entire look.

  • ashtangajunkie

Love the pants. I think I could like the top, but those weird, gigantic hip ribbons are nobody’s friends.

  • majorbedhead

I like the earrings and her makeup is pretty, but the top is just weird and unflattering. And I don’t understand what’s going on with her hair. I thought maybe it looked that way because she was growing out the pixie cut, but if it’s pinned to look that way, it’s not a good look.

  • crash1212

I’m the exact opposite as I love the top and hate the pants. I think pants are the way to go, but these are so crotchtacular and ill fitting. The hair is an abomination and whoever let her go out the door with that ‘do should be shot.

  • miagain

    if not now… when??

  • egurl

The top elongates her legs/looks cute on her. From the back, it elongates her torso, not as cute.

  • OnyxSkye

Is it just me, or is her torso hovering about 4 inches above her waist in the third picture from the bottom?

  • alyce1213

The pants fit her poorly at the crotch, don’t they?
I don’t like the cropped, cuffed pants, which throw off the proportion, stumpify even long, slender legs, and look gimmicky. I’d prefer ankle-length skinny pants like the runway, or a pencil skirt.
Somehow, even with the hair, she still looks pretty good.,

  • steeg of their own

WTF is up with peplums or peplum-like flounces over the hips lately? This does not need to be a style! These are not flattering on people who are size -3 and do not have hips at all, much less on normal people who do have hips and do not need to look any wider there. Stop making these clothes, designers!

  • Violina23

As odd as the combination is, I think the makeup and the great smile is winning me over on this look. She really looks mature, like she’s grown into her adult-self, if that makes sense. A little less… weird, and I’d be completely on board.

  • Little_Olive

  • M. H. Leader

Definitely an IN. She looks very chic here. Yes, the top is odd, but somehow she’s pulling it off. And the hair–it’s just in an awkward, growing-out length. I think she’s trying to let it get some length so for another few months it’ll just look not its best.

  • conniemd

I love the look. She look chic and happy.

  • kimmeister

My biggest issue is with the random white band under the pointed hem. Her makeup looks incredible though.

  • ailujailuj

this is completely inappropriate and I’m sure i’ll receive TLo demerits… but I just have to tell someone how so lovely her movie “Perks of Being a Wallflower” is, as well as her character and her performance in it. I was sofucking moved. And now I love her and she can wear a kite as a top and holly hunter circa ’82 smash air all she wants.

  • melanie0866

I hate the pants. They look like they don’t quite fit, and they appear to be navy blue, in contrast to the black pumps and the trim on the top.

  • sekushinonyanko

I think the hair is what’s going on because she’s growing it out, and a bob is much less crazy looking than the mullet she would have at this point from growing out that pixie cut.

  • MiranduhMay

It’s very Diane Kruger, but unfortunately I don’t think Emma pulls off the top. Those pants are great though!

  • Candigirl1968

If the top was a simple peplum, this might be WERQ-worthy. Instead, it’s a head scratcher.

  • jmorino08

I LOVE her hair like that! Her whole head looks glorious to me! And I would love to look that good in a pair of cigarette pants. Cuffed even! I don’t hate the top, but I’m twitching that the blacks don’t match. Especially in that back-view shot.

  • bd73

the hair is sculptural. the whole head works. the top doesn’t match the pants on any level. plus, the pants have pockets while the top has a zipper. couldn’t they get pants made to match either the black or the purple of the top? i’ve been thinking about her black and white cannes outfit and the way she seemed to be in some super-dramatic universe separate from the castmates around who her who just stepped and repeated. emwat is working the court of public appeal to keep this career in high gear. this might an attempt to inject some more daring into her largely well-received stylista image. i don’t mind actors mugging for the paparazzi, but i don’t want to see behind the curtain.

  • Sara__B

Eh. That top should never have left the runway.

    • DuBey2

Er.. did you mean that it never should have even Hit the runway? I don’t like it on anyone; the white band is weird. And I think its one more example of how Peplum’s 15 minutes of fame is OVER. again.

Love the pants and shoes, though.

  • MK03

I’m much more bothered by the Playboy logo slathered all over that step-and-repeat. That sure as hell better not be a portent of things to come.

  • fursa_saida

I’m suddenly getting MAJOR “Sally Draper’s older sister” vibes here.

That said, I also think the makeup is too heavy. Otherwise, I basically agree, I think–I can’t tell if I have a problem with the pants, or it’s just that they’re not working with what else is going on.

  • crystal76

I love the hair, make-up, and back of it.

  • elemspbee

i actually love the outfit, top, pants, and shoes. the hair is killing me.

  • largishbearishAtlish

Maybe if they did a live action re-make of the Jetsons, she went Blonde she could pull off a Judy Jetson?

  • demidaemon

Hmm, I hate everything here except her head. The pants are too short, that top is a WTF, and the shoes make it seem as if she is going to tip over any second.

  • Lizzy

I’m not loving the black/navy blue combo here… and the flaps…

The hair… yeah… that’s growing-out-hair and it’s a pain no matter what kind of stylist you have.

I do like the bottom half… the top is a miss.

  • quiltrx

The top is awkward at best…almost cute, but they didn’t know when to stop.
And I think she looks quite Ally Sheedy here from the neck up, which I rather like!

  • roche

She looks adorable, though I agree her hair looks clunky. But that is one strange top. Those black flaps read either as a tummy ‘stache or hip eyebrows. WTF?

  • katiessh

this is one of those looks that I feel like I should hate, but for some reason I actually really like it. It might be her earrings

  • LuluBI

    Baggy crotch

  • H2olovngrl

I like it. She is serving up the fierce on a silver platter in a couple of those shots. I have some minor quibbles like that super dark lipstick and her slicked down hair but the overall effect is awesome enough that I am willing to overlook them.

  • Imasewsure

I almost never get the love for her style. No one gets this one though so i am in good company this time.

  • JauntyJohn

I have mixed feelings about the top, but I have to give it to the girl, she is wearing those clothes, they are not wearing her — which can sometimes be the case with these riskier looks.

  • Mona_Visa

Paper clothes tabs. They’re the little doo-dads you fold back to help the paper blouse stay on your paper doll.

  • it’s the white strap below the waist that’s killing the look for me. what is that? it looks like one of those things people wear around their waists when they’re doing heavy lifting. i like the pants on the runway model, emma would look cute in those too.

  • thecitysleeps

I love everything about the hair. Even the top is interesting, although it would be perfect if it was a bit more subdued. THOSE PANTS ARE TO DIE FOR.

  • Noelle_H

Overall I think she looks really cute, despite that stupid top. I actually quite like her hair here, and her makeup is really gorgeous. (SHE is gorgeous.) I also love the shoes with those pants, and I’d love the pants if the crotch wasn’t so wonky on them. That top is just icky, though.

  • NinjaCate

Is it just me or does Emma look really tiny all of a sudden? Not body shaming I swear, she just looks a lot smaller than I remember her looking in Perks for instance. Does anyone know if maybe she’s slimming down for a role? Not htat she has to be or anything. But it would explain such a dramatic (to my eyes) change.

  • Aurumgirl

Stop with the hip flaps, everybody, please.

    • camdiggidy

God, yes. Peplum needs to go away, like, yesterday.

  • GillianHolroyd

I rarely like her look so I was surprised to find myself liking this. I am magically able to glide over the hip flaps on the top. I like the sleekness of it, very chic and her makeup is perfect. Greater than the sum of its parts.

  • sagecreek

I love the fact that her shoes actually fit. Such a rarity!

  • Her hair looks strange but her make-up is gorgeous.

I like this on her. I don’t especially ‘like’ it as a piece, but she’s working it. If anyone could pull this off it’s her. I see Cammy Diaz trying to make a go of it but it’s really too young for her now.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Nope, nope, nope. The pants make her legs look even shorter, and the top is just weird. She’s gorgeous and she can rock clothes, but this does nothing for her.

  • ThaliaMenninger

From the top down: The hair is odd and belongs on MAD MEN for one of Sally’s classmates who doesn’t know what to do with her hair while it’s in a growing out stage. I had that hair in my 5th grade picture in 1966. The neckline looks fine until you scroll down and see the weirdness, which is ok with the original wackadoodle pants, but totally out of place with plain black, baggy-in-the-crotch capris. They don’t look nearly dressy enough for that top or the shoes. HAAAATE the shoes.

  • Lesley

the top makes her torso look really long and her legs really short. i think shes such a beautiful girl but this is not working for me

  • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

I hate everything except the makeup.

  • marlie

I want to like this, but the top and the pants aren’t working together. The pants seem a skosh too big, and the black of the top doesn’t match with the black of the pants, and it’s making my eye twitch. I like what they were trying to do with her hair, but it didn’t quite work.

  • Cathy S

Not crazy about the hair. The back of the top is much better than the front.

  • StrandedFashionista

I was all on board for this look till I realized that the pants were navy and the top had black accents. Even in this modern ‘anything goes’ age, that’s a whole lotta NOPE to me.

  • Ann VerWiebe

It’s like a pair of signal flags hanging off of her shirt.

  • Tracy_Flick

I’ll take that hair a thousand times over yoga-messy, Pinterest-braid, mermaid, or basset hound.

  • MarieLD

I like her hair — so much better than being slicked back. It may be that I just long for straight, shiny hair. I know many actresses are tiny, but I think Emma is one of the tiniest, so perhaps she looks for clothes that will give her a bit more of an hour-glass. I saw her Harry Potter costumes at an exhibit and they were so small. I love the pants and I’m so glad she’s not posing with her legs crossed.

  • SylviaFowler

I know what to make of it: a bonfire.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

    dowdy dowdy dowdy
