Emily VanCamp in Preen

Posted on June 20, 2013

Emily, you are our favorite person today, simply for wearing something with a little color and pop to it in a sea of boringly black and white-attired starlets.

Emily VanCamp attends Dramatically Different Party Hosted By Clinque at 620 Loft & Garden in New York City in a Preen printed dress paired with Brian Atwood pumps.

Preen by Thornton Bregazzi Dita Printed Stretch-jersey Dress

It helps that it’s not just any old colorful print dress. This happens to be a pretty damn fabulous colorful print dress and one that suits Emily pretty much perfectly. Sorry to be such a total GIF about it, because we say this about a half-dozen times a day, but the shoes are kind of a letdown. Granted, this dress shouldn’t have to fight with a pair of focus-pulling shoes, but these look a little drab. Considering the severe hair, lack of jewelry, and somewhat business-like silhouette, we think she could’ve picked something for her feet just a little more … we don’t know, sparkly, maybe? A metallic sandal? Make the call, kittens.

I disagree. I think softer hair or a bigger bracelet was the way to go.

      • ConnieBV

Totes. I think the shoes are great but a pony and a bangle would have killed it.

        • MRC210

A ponytail, yes. Those bunheads do not work for anything except ballet class.

          • mlle

I love those buns, but I have ex-ballerina bias clouding my judgement.

            • alyce1213

I like a small ballet bun too, especially for summer. It’s big buns that bug me.

            • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

I love a good sock bun. That’s my day two go to. I have a lot of hair, but it’s fine, so I feel funny if my hair is up, but small.

      • j_anson

Yes this. That bracelet is bothering me the more I look at it. I get that it’s picking up a color in the dress, and there may not be that many lemony yellow bracelets out there, but something about it just doesn’t work for me. Still, it’s a cute look overall.

        • 3boysful

Perhaps because except for the diamond slide I assume is there but we cannot really see, it looks like something she crafted at summer camp?

      • Rhonda Shore

Agree, but we’re quibbling since her general look is superb here. Also love the lipstick, very unexpected!

    • MarieLD

“Sorry to be a total GIF about it.” Ha!

      • nycloy

        What does GIF stand for?

        • kaysarasara

It’s the new “broken record”. TLo coined it a little bit ago, and it is BRILLIANT.

          • Trisha26

Genuinely asking, no snark, how does GIF mean “broken record?”

            • Madeleine Rodriguez

GIFs replay over and over again.

            • Trisha26

I just came back to see if anyone answered & as I scrolled down realized exactly that. Thanks!

          • Faerie Nuff

I’ve been telling everyone. I’m totally trying to make GIF happen.

    • decormaven

Definitely a metallic sandal. That’s a gorgeous color of dress!

    • Selkiechick

      Does noone wear necklaces anymore?

    • Heather

Very cute, but also very Fall.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Oooh, I like. At first, I didn’t understand the lipstick choice, but once I saw more of the dress, I thought it was perfection. I must disagree about the shoes; I like her choice. My wish is to have seen a bit more sparkle with some jewelry.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I would have pulled the candy pink that is hidden in the print for the shoes.

      • Gwyndall

        AGREED!

      • Rand Ortega

        This.

      • WhoAreYouWearing

        My thought, exactly.

    • marlie

I think this is great. I wish she’d perhaps worn bigger earrings, but otherwise I think she looks great.

    • Patricia Gillett

Great dress but I wish she had done something else with the hair. This is doing the pinhead thing.

    • Julie Chase

I like the shoes-it’s only the hair that bugs. I love this outfit though!

    • MilaXX

A metallic sandal would have been perfect. As is, while the dress is cute, the entire look reads a bit mature.

    • plinkiedoodle

      Lovely from head to toe.

      • Clueless_Jock

        Yes. The dress is sublime.

    • Qitkat

Emily is one of the few women who can not only get away with this hairstyle, but looks amazingly good in it. Perfect lip color too.

As for the dress, the color and the print are beautiful. It’s my impression that designers have stepped up their game in the last few years when it comes to eye-catching prints. I don’t know if it’s the onset of digitally printed fabrics or something else, perhaps the influence of designers such as Peter Pilotto, Mary Katrantzou, and Agatha Ruiz De La Prada, who always push the proverbial envelope in terms of wild color and innovative print combinations. It’s a welcome trend that has become much more mainstream.

    • Mismarker

I love her posture and poise. You can absolutely tell she has a background in ballet. I really don’t mind anything about this look other than her too-yellow foundation. Her face and her neck appear to be two different colors. Maybe it’s just my screen.

      • filmcricket

Nope, I see it too. Terrible make-up job.

      • lrober03

I had to double check her height on Google (5’8″) because she looks so tall (in a good way) in that first picture.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I don’t mind the shoes, but that hair and neckline require some major dangly earrings.

    • maggiemaybe

I LOVE that dress and I think the shoes look good with it. The yellowy face makeup, however, I cannot sign off on.

    • Rand Ortega

Yellow sandals. Or pink open toe pumps.

    • newleaf1

She looks pretty in this dress, but the close up shot shows how much of a mask of makeup she is wearing. Does she really need that much? Surely her own skintone isn’t that bad…?

      • frederieke

I thought I was the only one that noticed the horrible face paint…her face is a completely different color from the rest of her skin. It looks yellower than the rest of her and it is so thick it looks like a rubber mask.

    • Trisha26

What does GIF mean in this context? Edit: Okay, someone answered on a previous post that TLo coined it recently as “broken record.”

    • Charlotte Karlsen

I think for perhaps the first time, Emily looks graceful, put together, and dazzling. The styling on Revenge puts the best clothes on her, and now she is reflecting that quality on the carpet. I love her face as well. This should have been a WERQ.

    • Tatiana Luján

Is there one person in the world who looks better with a pin up head?

    • carnush

Really pretty. Beautiful color on her.

    • Squarah

Makeup artist fail: her face is a completely different color than her neck. There’s a weird tinge to that foundation.

      • eebisme

Ha, agreed. And at a Clinique event, no less. I was so distracted by the makeup I didn’t even notice the dress.

    • mlle

I think the shoes are great with the dress, but the overall look would sing if she added a black and gold bib necklace.

      ETA: also a better bracelet.

    • alyce1213

I love the shoes, especially on her, with those legs and that dress. Makeup match aside, I think she looks great.

    • Belvane

I really like the shoes. They pull the eye down without shouting, and her pretty red toenails provide the color pop.

    • barbarienne

But she has floaty-face. Why is her face not attached to her head? Why is it such a different color from the rest of her?

    • M. H. Leader

Sorry, I think this look is just FAB on her. She looks gorgeous. I woudn’t change hair (definitely cool for the summer to have hair up off the neck!) OR shoes. Anything any more attention pulling would distract from that gorgeous dress.

    • Deedles

It’s a Chihuly in dress form!

    • thecitysleeps

Lovely dress although I’m not in love with the hot pink accents. I even like the hair somewhat. I like the shoes and I think I’d prefer black shoes with this dress, although there are better black shoes than that one.

    • Sarah Thomas

I’d have gone with a pointed toe black heel.

    • demidaemon

I am SO, SO glad she edited out the cutouts. That said, her styling is letting down this fabulous dress.

    • KateMaryC

That’s the first time I’ve ever liked a topknot. Her face can seriously handle it. I’m impressed.

    • Adriana

I only wish she would lose the bracelet. The severe hair and shoes don’t bother me at all, I think she looks pretty great!

    • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

I love that dress! I don’t care what else she’s got going on or not going on. It’s perfect.

    • ballerinawithagun

Preen has used this print to its full advantage! A perfectly simple shape, it doesn’t require all sorts of seams, oragami folds and geegaws. Some big black dangly earrings would have been great. The shoes are OK, perhaps she wore her own instead of a pair that didn’t fit???

    • Suzanne Elovecky

What is up with her make up? Her face looks yellowed next to her neck. Ick.

      • YourLibrarian

I didn’t even notice that the first time I looked, and now it’s freaking me out. In the second picture, her face looks green.

        • ailujailuj

Poor girl gets splotchy (like I do ) during those heady “moments”. The lights of fame are unforgiving.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I like the shoes, but that shape in a metallic would have been better. And I love that she is wearing proper lipstick!

    • Monabel

Glad her version lost the strange white patches in the print.

    • nannypoo

Her makeup is just awful, and I never like a council house facelift with a little knot on top, but the dress is gorgeous.

    • unbornfawn

Great dress that looks terrific on her. Wish she’d gone for softer hair, and a little gold on the shoes. Quibbles really. The make-up, Oy vey. Her face looks green compared to her neck and chest and I am not a fan of that lip color with that dress.

    • Pennymac

I LOVE THIS DRESS!!!!!! (Yes, I just yelled that)

    • Fordzo

I wish her face were the same color as…any other part of her body.

    • flamingoNW

Disagree. Like the shoes a lot with this dress.

    • TheAmericaness

That’s a pound of makeup she’s got on. Pretty, but the foundation could have used a lighter touch, even for the camera, no?

    • Tracy_Flick

The dress is fine, but the hair and makeup scream “Olympic gymnast.”

    • MandyM

The shoe is fine but I am not crazy about the hair. I love the dress on her and this hem length is just right for this dress, unlike Sandra Bullock’s horrible biker mama leather skirt.

    • E. D.

I like this the way it is!

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Like the shoes, love the dress, hair and makeup. But that pale bracelet and teensy gold earrings you can barely see? No, no, no.

    • stephbellard

And when she’s not wearing clothes well, she gets to wear Josh Bowman. Lucky bitch.

    • clairellis

I like the shoes , but the hair is too tight and the lack of accessories makes me sad.

    • bd73

mostly like it. at her age she should do less severe hair, maybe a wraparound french braid draping the opposite shoulder. and she should shorten it and take sandra bullock’s diva shoes.

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

I think big prints are back because designers are out of ideas. As far as big prints go, I like this one. The dress is a nice fit. Wild hair would have been nice with this dress. I think the shoes are OK. At least they’re not those horrible high black shoes with several rows of straps. I shudder to think….

Actually, the ugly black shoes with several straps might work with this dress. Haha.

      • Badriya Al-Badi’a

I usually hate those foot cage shoes too, but I also thought they would actually work with this dress, to give a very nice dress a little more edge and interest.

    • lrhoff

Her makeup is china doll….just try to match your skin tone next time, please.

    • Reality TV Casting

errr is no one gogn to comment on the fact that she has yellow fever in the face? gurl needs to match that foundation to the rest of the body or at least blend down the neck

    • Aurumgirl

Softer hair would have really made this look.

    • ailujailuj

This dress is a beautiful asian-reference print. The makeup is perfect for this look. The bun is very nicely done and for an asian look the hair needed to be smoothly pulled tightly away from the face and any other style would have been too severe (ponytail at nape, feauxhawk, wet slicker).
      I don’t get the bracelet.
But I do love the long uninterrupted lines of her leg with that hemline – she has beautiful legs. and any heavier shoe would have thrown her off-balance. But black patent would have been the choice for me. And I couldn’t go metallic or sparkly for this particular look. HOWEVER, she could easily switch up the hair, shoes, jewelry… grab some coke and go extra sparkly for the clubs.

    • Emily Wilkerson

I think the shoes work, but the hairstyle could’ve been less severe. The real problem though, her foundation! That stuff is completely the wrong shade for her. Look at how different the color is from the skin on her neck and at her hairline. YIKES.

    • andreawey

just perfect and I love the poppy pod pattern on the dress, fabulous color for her too, shoes are fine….

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

She’s beautiful and this is a WERQ for me.

    • Anna Banana

The dress is amazing, I really don’t mind the hair. But seriously, the hell is up with the face? The mask of foundation in the wrong colour? I can’t even focus on the dress!
