Elisabeth Moss in RED Valentino

Posted on June 11, 2013

Bless her heart, she never seems to get it quite right. We think that’s kind of endearing.

Last week we sang hosannas to her blonde pixie cut, but this week, Lizzie’s reminding us all just how big a pain in the ass a pixie cut can be sometimes:

‘Mad Men’ star Elisabeth Moss attends the 2013 Critics’ Choice Television Awards in Los Angeles, California in a RED Valentino dress paired with a vintage clutch, Jimmy Choo shoes, and Loree Rodkin jewelry.

We hate to be the ones to have to tell you this, girl, but you picked a hairstyle that simply can’t be DIY-styled for public appearances. You gotta pay someone to zhuzh that shit. Also, you are one of those girls who not only can, but probably should sport a strong lip with strong eyes.

Moving on to the dress… fantastic color, but the neckline is too broad and the waist hits too high for you. Love the shoes. If you’d found a dress in this color and style, but one more flattering to your shape, it would have instantly corrected the look.

Still… think about what we said about your eyes and lips, Lizzie. You play down your face too much. Striking eyes, full lips, perfect brows and an enviable jawline are not things to hide under a bushel, dear. They are to be flaunted obnoxiously.

Peggy does Betty. The dress is mostly good, the shoes okay, but the hair is horrid. Horrid.

    • rhaazz

You know what’s tragic? She probably DID pay someone to zhuz that shit.

  • blogless

Girl that is not your everything.

(wrong hair, wrong dress, wrong shoes, wrong you name it)

    • Annarosa

agreed. I save only the make up, but more lipstick would had been a good try.

    • Clueless_Jock

      Yup, c’est vraiment tragique.

    • 3boysful

      Also wrong hair color.

    • drdarke

That dress gives her Clown Butt – and, um, what makeup?

The hair’s nothing to write home about either.

  • I think she looks super cute!! For her.

    Which is still super cute!!

    • Shoes are trag, tho.

  • jackiecoh

    her nails are chipped?

    • SewingSiren

She must do her own dishes.

      • and her own nails.

        • Heather

In the limo on the way over, with a Sharpie. (Seriously Lizzie I love you – but find a good manicurist.)

          • RebeccaKW

Her nails and the sad hair and barely there makeup make me wonder if she was at a pool party and her iPhone calendar reminder pinged that she had this event and she had to hustle home and throw something on. (legs shaved, of course, b/c of the pool party). She probably put her shoes and jewelry on in the car on the way over.

    • sweetlilvoice

I love that! It makes her seem like a real person.

  • Fordzo

The chipped nails are giving me spasms.

    • sweetlilvoice

Love your avatar. I love that poster!

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Zoey Bartlet goes to the eighth grade dance.

  • Heather

To me, this fabric and color just always read ‘bridesmaid.’

    • MilaXX

For me it’s the fabric and dress style. I think the color could work in a better dress.

  • msdamselfly

She really is a lovely lady aaannd …she won the award! Congrats to LIzzie!
The shape of the dress is not flattering. Not sure she should do twee.

    • PowerfulBusiness

She was so dang good in Top of the Lake…I hope she wins an Emmy for it. It still haunts me.

  • OrigamiRose

The shoes are to die for; the chipped nails, not so much.

  • Rand Ortega

So close! Still, the hair color gives her (& me) life. Really brings out those gorgeous eyes.

  • formerlyAnon

I will say, I VASTLY prefer even a bad hair day with this cut than her previous looks.

    • Spicytomato1

Exactly what I was thinking. She looks pretty cute, relatively speaking.

I agree with TLo that she should play up her features a bit more, though. She is so lovely but somehow that can get lost sometimes.

  • marlie

A bolder lip, and I might really like this.

  • Jeff Warhurst

I like her hair. It would have really rocked with an evening pantsuit or tailored dress.

  • Ok, what in the hell is happening to her legs? Are they Gumbyfied because of the ridiculous amount of tilt her foot must contort into just to wear those heels? Freakin’ OUCH.

  • veriance

Did she break her finger or is that a statement ring?

She’s reading Ashlee Simpson in these pics. Not a good thing.

  • Cynthia Gallaher

Despite what you say about the hair finish, Elizabeth Moss is somewhat of a knockout as a blonde, n’est pas?

    • scrappy1

I agree. I’d love to see her with that color, well-styled, with makeup that highlights her eyes and a dress to bring out her eye color.

  • Scimommy

God, I hope she reads this. Or someone in her orbit reads this and passes it on to her. This look is so very close to fabulous… but not quite.

  • VioletFem

This color just does not work for her at all. The blonde completely washes her out.

  • mhleta

She did not have time to prepare for this event, clearly. Chipped nails, wash-n-go hair do and an ill-fitting bridesmaids dresses,it all says “rushed.”

    • alyce1213

if by “rushed” you mean really sloppy, I agree. Surely she and her manager got advance notice, so what’s the excuse?
Truly, I would not even walk out of the house with that hair.
The top of the bridesmaid dress doesn’t fit, creating a bit of dreaded titscrepancy.
      The black chipped nails . . . don’t ask.

      • TheAmericaness

Surely even celebrities have real excuses, even with advanced notice. Last minute phone calls from mom, from work (Mad Men!) yada yada… I guess I’m saying I wouldn’t presume to know what their excuses are or are not unless I knew them personally. She thought that hair looked cute on her and maybe is trying something different that just isn’t working and heaven knows as women we have all done that (probably even… you. ahem :D)

  • Betsy

I think she makes the mistake a lot of pale-skinned gals do. Bleach out the hair really light, then wear black eyeliner, that awful nude-colored lipstick and no other visible makeup. What about some COLOR on your lips and eyes? (and a little on your cheeks!) What about brown-black mascara and eyeliner (less harsh for pale skin)? What about a hair color that has a little deeper hue to it. You can be a blonde and not have to be a platinum blonde, you know? Just my 2 cents as another pale-skinned blonde — now going silver, which is even *lighter*! Aacck!!

  • honey, re: that second photo, when you hold your purse like that, it looks like a giant black sparkly penis.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

      Well, that can’t be unseen.

      • formerlyAnon

    • Heather

      • catherines

sometimes I doubt your commitment to sparklepenis

  • nyazgirl

    Twee prom dress.

  • cowper

Pink’s mousy cousin. You can do better, Elizabeth!

  • MzzPants

Some perky hair might have made this a ‘win’ for me.

  • MilaXX

Yeah, not really loving any of this except the shoes. I would mind the messy hair, but as mentioned the face is too bland. The dress is too twee for her, although I like the color.

  • barbarienne

I know the hair is awful and needed a pro with a blowdryer and round brushes, but I still LOVE LOVE LOVE this short cut. Even with the roughed-up hair, she still looks a million times prettier than she did with the longer hair. The wrong-for-her-shape dress, the too-understated makeup…I don’t care, it’s like I’m looking at an entirely different person compared to how she used to look.

She is the living demonstration of what a difference the right haircut can make in how someone’s face looks.

  • decormaven

Dangnabit, AMC, pony up some money and hire this gal a style team, one that has her best interests at heart. Someone who knows how to apply good makeup, someone to take that rockin’ hair to the top level, and a fashion stylist who can set off her physical attributes to best advantage. This show is hot- and she’s got a devoted fan base- so any photo of hers gets immediate play. Your cachet rises with hers. Get busy!

    • alyce1213

She’s got enough money to hire her own stylists.

      • decormaven

Probably so, but it’s to AMC’s interest to have its top-shelf actors looking good in the public eye. Might as well work that big wheel (AMC) while it’s there.

  • JP

Is that black netting supposed to show? Because it’s giving off a “your slip is showing” vibe rather than a deliberate design.

  • Katerina

    No! No!
She needs new makeup gays, stat!

  • filmcricket

I hate the blonde. Hate it. It washes her out and right now it looks fried, like that season of Larry Sanders when Janeane Garofolo bleached the sh*t out of her hair. You couldn’t go chestnut with some auburn highlights, Lizzie? Or even deep gold ones, if you wanted to go lighter? Also, that cut will never not read “Kate Gosselin” to me.

I can’t even look at the rest of it, I’m so upset about her head.

  • LipstickForPigs

I was hoping that hair cut would go crawl under a rock with Kate Gosselin.

  • CeeQ

“Striking eyes, full lips, perfect brows and an enviable jawline ” are things that I would pay good money for.

  • Harrison

My jawline is just like hers and people used to make fun of me for it. Suddenly I’m feeling pretty good! You’re right though, she ought to play up her features more.

  • Anniebet

Well, BKs… I think she looks fantastic with the blond hair. Sure, it needs a gay with a comb here, but overall the blonde works for me. The general shape of the dress is similar to the Debra Messing flop fest yesterday , and not likely to flatter anyone who doesn’t have a 22 inch waist and large breasts. Love the color though.

  • jilly_d

she really has a killer little body doesn’t she? it’s hard to remember when she’s in Peggy drag all the time.

  • nannypoo

I really hate the blond hair on her. And that manicure – what is up with that? The only thing she actually got right here is the eye makeup. Without it she looks allergic, and she has very pretty eyes when she wears a little makeup to show them off.

  • M. H. Leader

Not to mention that when you’re sporting black fingernail polish, you better not let it be chipped as it is here–at least not for RC appearances.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Positives: really love the color of the dress. Negatives: that hair!! I’m sure she wants to be able to change it up when she’s not filming but it just looks sooo bad. She doesn’t look like herself at all in these pics.

  • PeaceBang

    This gives me fashion despair.

  • Tracy_Flick

I can’t disagree with TLo on this one. But I have to say, she seems like a lot more fun to hang out with than the Seriously Fashionably Accessorized Gwen Stefani.

    • kimiakay

  • mrspotts66

and at least slap another coat of nail polish over that chipped mani, huh?

  • Judy_J

That hair is making me sad. It looks over-processed, and not at all like the cute, fun cut featured last week. Go back to your original stylist, Lizzie, and have him/her repair that damage.

  • teensmom99

I just give her so much credit for progress. Although everything TLo say is true.

  • Lola Channing

    uh oh.

  • DailyDose

the dress belongs to her fellow star Kiernan Shipka, did Valentino pay her to wear this? Kmart’s children dept. has the same thing.

  • You’re a STAR! Fix your damn manicure. *sigh*

  • Aidan B

Holy crap, her poor feet. That looks painful. Otherwise, totally agree about needing a stronger lip and a better style on the hair. This could have been va-va-voom!

  • rkdgal

At least she dyed the brows. (Take note, Stephen Moyer!)

  • demidaemon

I don’t like her as a blond much or the style of her hair here. It’s awkward. And that dress is a bit too much on the twee side for her. It’s all a big NO for me.

  • E. D.

    Problems in order of importance:
    1. Hair color, WTF happened?
    2. Hair style, stringy and straw-like is no way to go through life
    3. Makeup, agree on the comments she needs to WERQ it
    4. Shoes, never been a fan of “lace” shoes
    5. Dress, don’t have a huge problem with it, but it seems several inches short

  • bd73

agree with everything tlo says here. her face isn’t on the same level with the outfit. (i’ll forever love that gown she wore to the emmy’s with the giant blue necklace that matched her eyes. wrinkles be damned. it was fabulous.)

  • quiltrx

I want to cut that big long Kate-plus-8 part on the front for her. Otherwise it’s a cute cut.

  • judybrowni

That’s the best I’ve seen of her eye makeup, yay, Lizzy!

But you’re right, a more colorful lip would work.

Love the color of the dress and the shoes, and not bad on the shape of dress.

  • DebbieLovesShoes

She couldn’t go and get a manicure?

  • golden_years

I like the hair style, but not the colour. The dress is cute.

  • AutumnInNY

Oh boy, hair is awful. Texture looks straw-like and roots look sloppy. And that’s not your dress or neckline. Looks like she got dressed in a hurry.

  • Aurumgirl

She’s not playing down the face only–the girl has been keeping that very toned body and fantastic legs a secret. As far as that face, she’s taken on roles where she’s an “average” girl, but in my mind, she resembles a couple of supermodels–namely Linda Evangelista and Tatiana Patitz, depending on the light she’s in. She really ought to be showing all of that off at every opportunity (which means, when she’s not in character).

And she should also spend the $30 for a decent manicure, whaddaya say.

    • mhleta

I agree. She’s got the kind of beauty that blossoms the more you look at her. Her eyes are dazzling and that smile of hers can really be disarming. As an actress she knows how to use all the tools in her arsenal. Now if she’d just catch up to that in her promotional activities.

  • Write On

She brought the gams. You have to give her that. From the waist down, she’s bordering on a WERK. Her top half makes me sad. Love you, though, Elizabeth! Love your work!

  • berkeleygirl

She’s never been more beautiful than in Top of the Lake, where she appeared not be wearing any makeup at all, and her hair was light brown.

  • shelley514

T&Lo nailed all the proportion issues with this dress on Peggy (sorry chile, but I simply don’t have time to bother with real names.) People simply do not give sufficient attention to proportion and fit in their sartorial choices.
