‘Downton Abbey’ Cast in Hollywood

Posted on June 13, 2013

Everyone’s favorite set of aristocrats and servants slapped on way more makeup than we’re used to seeing them in and hit the Hollywood  red carpet.

Creator Julian Fellowes, actors Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Rob James-Collier, Phyllis Logan, Joanne Froggatt and executive producer Gareth Neame attend an evening with ‘Downton Abbey’ in North Hollywood, California.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: makeup is a magical thing.

We’re not too keen on Phyllis Logan’s skirt, but they all look nice. Michelle seems to be getting a little bit better at these sorts of things. Keep it simple, girl. That’s the best thing you can do for yourself. Joanna wins this round, though, She really looks adorable.

We’re big fans of close-cropped hair on cute men, but we have to say, Rob, your locks are missed.

Can we get a pledge drive going to support stylists for actors on PBS broadcast shows? I’d sit through endless DA interruptions if we could help these fine people be a bit more presentable. They are clearly in need; Phyllis Logan is reduced to smuggling out part of the dinner in her garment hem.

      • scrappy1

Lady Mary and Cora are so beautifully styled on the show that it’s an utter letdown to see them on the red carpet.

    • CakesOnAPlane

I feel like the Countess should know better than to extend her lip color past the natural line of her lips (it never works, Cora!)

      • Chickadeep

Agreed…on the other hand, props to her for not Botox-ing and cheek-and-lip-implanting herself into plastic doll territory like so many of her contemporaries. She can still have expressions!

        • Rhonda Shore

I think Cora looks great! And it’s such a relief to see SOMEONE with a bold lipstick!!!

          • LadyKateC

I think application is the problem here…it looks like there is lipstick outside of her actual lipline.

I just want to know that Fellowes has been betch slapped enough about all the cliches he piled on at the end of last season that he won’t be doing it anymore.

Oh and Rob? Come over here for a minute,….

      • Edwina3

Fellowes reminds me of the Ryan Murphy school of the dramatic arc, just throw any old implausible plot against the wall and not give a damn whether it sticks or not. They both cannot be bitch-slapped into writing better plots, no matter how much we beg.

        • MilaXX

Agreed, either you learn to love their brand of throw everything at the wall writing or you give up on their projects.

      • Spicytomato1

I’m so sorry but Rob has already been summoned to my side…perhaps you’d care to wait in line? It might be a while, just so you know.

Makeup can be magical… but here for me, in a weird way, it takes away the magic of who the characters are. I totally get that in these photos, they’re not being their characters, but I suppose one thing about being an actor is that your face is a tool that people recognize. Mrs. Patmore is so warm and wise, but I feel like with makeup, the actor is *now* wearing a mask.

Guess that speaks as much to her (considerable) acting ability as to what the makeup is doing…

      • CakesOnAPlane

Do you mean Mrs. Hughes? Or is Mrs. Patmore featured somewhere else (because if so, I wanna see!)

        • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

I meant Mrs. Hughes! Thank you for the correction.

      • ailujailuj

totally agree… it is quite strange. If you buy a season on iTunes it comes with an interesting hour-long background w/ great interviews all out of character. I did not – at all – recognize the actor playing Mrs. Hughes (pictured above). But the interview w/ the actor playing Mrs. Patmore made me feel exactly as you describe in your post and I felt guilty ;)

    • Judy_J

I love how Rob has the posture of a footman.

    • VeryClaire

Elizabeth McGovern is why whenever I think wearing red lipstick might be a good idea, I resist the urge.

      • colleenjanel

It’s not so much the red lipstick that’s bad, it’s the application. Though I think that dark a shade is very aging. If she went a few shades lighter, it would do wonders for her.
On the flip side, JF looks like she forgot her lipstick.

    • quitasarah

Is it just me or does Michelle D look a bit conehead-ish? Especially in the pic with the 3 ladies…

      • Paigealicious

Not just you. I was thinking it might be a weird angle or lens, though.

    • Paigealicious

Oof. I dunno, the makeup helps, but most of their outfits just look kind of dumpy and ill-fitting to me.

    • GillianHolroyd

Michelle Dockery’s dress is divine. Who makes it?

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

        Roland Mouret. L

    • AnnaleighBelle

I did not recognize Thomas! He looks a little thicker, no, or is it the hair?

    • nannypoo

I can hardly tell that’s Thomas. The thing that gives him away is his footman-like posture. He’s adorable even without his beautiful hair. Cora needs more advice than I can give. Mary and Anna look fabulous. Cannot wait for this show to start.

    • MilaXX

Phyllis’s skirt should be knee length. The color if fab on her. Everyone seems to have cleaned up really well this go round. Elizabeth just always looks a little cray.

      • Spicytomato1

        “A little cray.”

        Lol, so true!

    • formerlyAnon

Not a fan of whomever did the women’s hair. Unless they had to jog a half mile to get to the red carpet and finger comb everything into place with the aid of one tiny compact mirror. (Does anyone even carry pressed powder in compacts anymore?)

      • Heather

        I do! MAC.

    • cindiaune

      Their shoes are soooo boring!

    • alyce1213

They are a lovely bunch, but poor Phyllis Logan’s skirt got caught in her knee hi’s.

    • par3182

Are they done shooting the new season? Otherwise Thomas is a little fashion forward with that new ‘do.

    • PeaceBang

I so love Elizabeth McGovern. I want Cora to have more to do. I hold out an irrational hope that she and Hot, Bereaved Tom will develop a scandalous love affair.

    • eireteresa

Okay has no one but me noticed that Joanne Froggatt forgot to tan her feet? They all need to fire their glam squad….if they even have one.

      • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

I noticed that too. I thought maybe it was an English thing to not worry about that. :)

      • Heather

Spray tans need to die. They always look orange, and (as many posters note) leave weird patterns on feet, in armpits, etc. Embrace the pale!

        • onebluepussy

Michelle looks so much more refined in comparison, just because of skin tone (and I must admit I think Joannes hair and makeup looks sort of tacky..).

    • marlie

Elizabeth McGovern needs to learn that tilting her head down that way (first photo) does not make for a flattering picture.

      Mrs. Hughes! Holy Cow!

      • siriuslover

I know! And GothamTomato, I’ve been looking for a post of yours for a long time! Good to see you.

        • http://www.thirteen.org/program-content/downton-dish-season-3-episode-1/ Gotham Tomato

Thanks! I’m always reading Tlo’s posts, but I wish I had more time to post like I used too.

    • Tuneful54

Elizabeth looks like Morticia Addams, but the others are lovely. Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis) is glowing, and I hope that that bodes well for her character’s health and love life–but where is Mr. Carson (not to mention Mr. Bates)?

    • Heather

Rob JC has the prettiest eyes.

    • lobsterlen

I didn’t recognize Mrs Hughes. My big compliant … I wish Elizabeth had worn sheer hose. Such a simple change would have greatly improved what she was wearing.

    • Heather

While Mrs. Hughes herself looks lovely hair- and makeup-wise, I can’t get behind what she’s wearing here. It’s actually quite scary to me. A weird baggy dress and cardigan with fringe trim in periwinkle blue? It’s like Chico’s from 1992. Sorry Mrs. H.

      • Paigealicious

        The cardigan is downright horrifying.

        • Heather

I think it has actual yarn in the trim.

    • CeeQ

Oh Mrs. Hughes. I just don’t know. This isn’t really your look, is it? The make-up and shoes are OK but the skirt & the cardi is all wrong….none of it is very flattering, really…..

I miss Thomas’ locks too. He looks cute but also slightly scary….

I agree – Anna wins this round, lovely top to bottom.

Are Cora and Lady Mary on the outs? They don’t seem like they like each other…
Lady Mary is rocking her outfit but I’m not loving her hair….seems boring. Cora looks like she dropped in on this on her way to the Countess’ in The Arts Luncheon.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Her ladyship needs to shoot her hair and make-up gays. I mean really. It looks like she’s been drinking.
