Cover Girl: Shakira for ELLE Magazine

Posted on June 18, 2013

Y’know, we were going to make a “hips don’t lie” joke somewhere in here, but that’s just tired; like calling Madonna “the Material Girl.” At some point you’ve just gotta move on.

Shakira covers the July 2013 issue of ELLE magazine wearing a Versace top, Diane von Furstenberg lace shorts and David Yurman bracelets photographed by Carter Smith and styled by Joe Zee.

On the male coaches on The Voice: “In general, I think I’ve treated the boys with mercy.”

On her music and what’s next: “I have no idea of where I want to go musically, but I’m fine that way. I don’t need to remain faithful to any concept, you know.”

Her experience as a new mother: “I’m still trying to figure it out. And I have a feeling I will try to do the same for the rest of my life. Some people put it like it’s very idyllic, some people put it like it’s a torturing experience, but it’s not quite one thing or the other. It’s like life – it comes with everything.”

Admittedly, the above picture is making our restraint a little difficult, because DAMN, girl. THAT is how that dress was meant to be filled out.

Oh, wait:

Anthony Vaccarello Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Catherine McNeil (OUI)

Joe Zee knew exactly what to do with that dress on Shakira. The guy’s a master.

Ooooh, that is a great dress on her. Looks very different and unremarkable on the model. Not feeling her choppy layers though, but I get twitchy when it comes to hair.

    • Lori

I suspect Joe Zee clipped the back of the dress pretty significantly, because on the model it doesn’t have much shape and on Shakira it obviously does.

      • SassieCassy

yeah they do that on mannequins a lot but its probably just her shape. she a lot shorter than the model and has more curves. the dress will hang differently no matter what

  • MilaXX

I love Shaki! She is werq’ing that dress!

    • Rhonda Shore

She certainly is! I like her attitude about being a mom too…sounds healthy!

  • marshmallowjane

I love Shakira. She’s sensual and sexual, but she can give it a rest when someone else should have the attention. She’s secure enough to take the back seat to other women. She’s a great mentor from what I saw this season. The show is bringing back Christina for Season 5, but Shakira will return for Season 6 (I will follow Shakira). Shakira is teeny, and she is getting her shape back after her pregnancy. I love Joe Zee; he has lots of heart. He knows how to give Shakira what she needs. She looks fabulous here. Plus, she gives great face.

I met her once several years ago in Miami and she is just lovely and very down to earth. It was around the time of “Hips Don’t Lie” and you would have never known she had that going on. She was with the Argentine guy at the time and he seemed like a jerk – it was one of those “what is she doing with HIM?” moments. She was smart to move on. Also, she does so much for charity. I think she’s just great.

      • drdarke

I’m glad to hear that, @VictoriaDiNardo:disqus – I really like her music. After “Hips Don’t Lie”, I was looking for more of her songs to listen to while working out, and discovered “Ojos Asi” (“Eyes Like Yours”) and “Suerte” (the American version is “Whenever, Wherever”) – they’re all four great songs to exercise to, sexy and hip-shaking.

        • ConnieBV

If you don’t mind the slight raunchiness, her duet with Residente from Calle 13, “Gordita”, also kicks ass.

          • poggi

Thanks drdrake and ConnieBV. I have a few Shakira songs for workouts but not Ojos Asi or Gordita. I will add those to the rotation. Usually, I read celebrity comments and like them less–with her, I actually like her more.

Isn’t that the dress that Giselle wore to this year’s Met Ball. Another beauty of the Southern Hemisphere who filled it out nicely.

  • Vanja

I would love to have a LBD like that.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

She’s my man’s freebie and to that I can only say “Good choice.”

    • JuliaInBlack

Indeed! She has been my “if I ever were to switch” freebie for years. (My husband’s pick for that is Dave Grohl).

      • understateddiva

lol he is SOOO straight! 😀

  • marlie

    She’s looking great here!

  • newleaf1

That is a very cool lbd. Not standard at all. She looks great – just edgy enough, not trashy.

  • Meg0GayGuys6

    She’s great, love her but…

is it a Photoshop thing or her thighs that small (in the cover shot)? I hope I’m not coming off snarky or body bashing or anything because she’s fantastic and beautiful, but something’s a-muck with those thighs, no?

    • Alaska Snob

She is tiny, so it could be her real legs. They’re still bigger than that model, who looks sickly and has weird markings on her arm.

    • somebody blonde

Yeah, I think when you look at the cover shot and then at the next one, it certainly makes you wonder. Could be that it’s not her angle, but it looks like photoshop to me as well.

  • stephbellard

She’s SO much hotter than the other two girls on the Voice: Xtina and Adam Levine.

  • a-

What a little hottie. I covet that crazy hair.

  • barbarienne

My text designer’s eyes are twitching at the forced bad kerning on her name. Really, ELLE? You needed to show her arm that strongly?

    • Kent Roby

The entire cover is a mess.

  • girliecue

Her hips don’t lie and her thighs make me cry. God I wish even one of ny body parts resembled Shakira’s! And that dress is as smokin’ hot as she!

  • anotherkate

Love her sound bites. She always seems so laid back. And she is KILLING that black dress.

  •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Why on earth isn’t that Vaccarello the cover shot?

  • conniemd

I love Shakira on the voice, she just seems like a fun person I’d love to go out with for a drink and some girl chat. She has humor, sexiness, but some humility.

  • cowper

I want lace shorts now, which I guess is the point of the editorial…

  • bd73

    love the model’s shoes

  • onebluepussy

Agree that the LBD is fabulous, but the cover picture is TERRIBLE. It looks like Elle Girl Russia.

    • kmk05

I think it’s the oily sheen. It makes me cry.

  • Erica_Vuitton

There are so many words and font sizes on that cover my eyes don’t know where to look. LOVE the black dress! When you rock something better than Gisele (Met Ball) you know you got it!

  • Diego!

My Hips Don´t Lie… yeah right! Neither does Photoshop! I don’t like the cover of the magazine, but… there’s always a but, she looks STUNNING in that Vaccarello dress. How come didn’t they use that picture for the cover of the magazine?

  • Danielle L

    Inspired. She looks slammin’.

  • alyce1213

She’s rocking the Vaccarello and I love the lioness hair.

  • ashtangajunkie

Love her. I have always coveted her hair…and her mad dance moves.

  • greyhoundgirl

Love her. Intelligent, articulate, supportive of other performers, seems like a mensch.

  • joything

Just checked out Anthony Vaccarello’s collection with this dress in it. I’m a jacket/coat/suit woman, so he is my new hero.

  • Kent Roby

Clearly Ms. Sexy Lady here needs Gwennie to help her figure out everything she needs to know about motherhood and her musical career.

    • alyce1213

      Tee hee.

  • finnishmaria

Speaking of Joe Zee, do we know (I probably missed something) if there will be another series of all on the line? I’m hoping it’s not gone for good.

But yeah, that black dress is amazing. And I actually like the bed-head messy hair.

  • pookiesmom

I ADORE her. She is the best thing to happen to The Voice, like, ever. I was never a huge fan of her music, but damn if she isn’t one of the most intelligent, articulate, generous ladystars out there. And she speaks like six languages better than most people speak one. Love!
