Scarlett Johansson? A word of advice.

Scarlett Johannson covers the first issue of Vanity Fair France magazine in Christian Dior photographed by Mark Seliger.

You round up the stylist and the hair and makeup people from this shoot, you have them caged up and shipped to Los Angeles, and you force them to make you look pretty full time.

That was actually several words of advice, but still. Girl, you haven’t looked this good in ages.

    • carlaaxtman

Serving up some serious Sharon Tate in that second frame.

      • Cynica

I’m getting Deneuve in the first. And it suits her.

        • KateTdid

          Yes, definitely Deneuve!

    • David Calder

      God bless the French.

    • marlie

I’m not loving it… she certainly looks pretty, but she looks a little …vacant… in both pictures.

      • Beardslee

So true! Very pretty and very vapid. She’s brighter than this.

      • annabelle archer

She’s been giving that face a lot lately cough*heroin*cough*allegedly*cough*
My, it is dry in here. Cough.

        • demidaemon

Wow, you set some people off with that comment. Two whole downvotes (I upvoted by the way. Hilarious!)!

          • annabelle archer

I’m up to four now. And now you’ve gotten one to for daring to find the humor in my humor.

      • LesYeuxHiboux

        She always looks vacant.

    • AmeliaEve

“Madamoiselle Johansson, your lobster is served.”

      • Meredith

        bib, voila!

      • DaringMiss

Thank you! That bib looks ridiculous!

        • largishbearishAtlish

I thought it was maybe one of those things news anchors wear in the chair to not get make up on their blouse…ick.

(and how could she NOT look better than the model in the second pic…were they using lobotomy patients as models?

I just realized its a CHAIR in the 2nd pic- and NOT a serving tray! (anyone else see serving tray? maybe Penny’s new coworker on Big Bang Theory?)

      • MoHub

Précisément! I actually thought it was a bib because of the restaurant setting until I saw the model shot and realized it was just a terrible, terrible blouse.

      • andreawey

ha ha I was just going to say I’m not crazy about the lobster bib!

    • mjude

trying to catch up after being gone for a few days, she looks really pretty

    • sekushinonyanko

Kate Winslet is going for another Oscar?

    • annabelle archer

      She’s bringing her sexy back.

    • poggi

While I like the Dior on the runway, it looks a little like a lobster bib on Scarlett. Although she does look very pretty in it, and part of the joy of room service is that you can wear anything you please.

    • 3boysful

She’s unrecognizable in the cover shot.

      • In_Stitches

Yeah, I think I’m just having a moment, but looking at these images really made me think back on one of her most memorable roles (Charlotte in Lost in Translation). It’s sad how the role that made her famous, the role for which she was lauded in part because she looked like a regular human, has helped her achieve this level of fame, the level of fame where looking like a mannequin is required. It’s a bit of a catch-22.

        • Mary229

Truer words have never been spoken here.

      • VeryClaire

I thought the word of advice is “don’t let them photoshop your looks away, you’re too pretty for that shit”.

      • lindsmh

I thought the cover shot was Katheryn Winnick at first. Looks exactly like her.

      • Targettaste

It’s nice that Vanity Fair is giving work to the same “photographers” who photoshop for Toddlers & Tiaras. Why even feature celebrities when they are unrecognizable?

    • HomeOfficeGirl

She’s beautiful – but the napkin tucked in at the table? Yuck! Hate that setting!!

      • 3boysful

Um, I think it’s part of the dress. A part that would be better if it disappeared.

      • Sunraya

        I thought the same thing!!!

        • MoHub

I think we all had the same initial reaction until the model shot showed it was part of the dress.

    • Rand Ortega

Serving up a little Chloe Moretz in the cover shot. But gorgeous nonetheless. That Dior is SERIOUS!

    • melanie0866

I would not have recognized her. She looks like Catherine Deneuve.

      • Jade Wombat

That was my first thought, too.

      • ballerinawithagun

Who else would you want to look like? Deneuve is perfection!

        • VeryClaire

If I looked like Scarlett Johanssen I’d be pretty satisfied. They made her look generic.

    • MrsAtaxxia

Where is her knee in the second picture?!?! That is deeply disconcerting.

      • Jessica Freeman

They were trying to distract you with her bib.

(it is disturbing, she is Gumby apparently.)

        • MrsAtaxxia

That picture is like photoshop nightmare fuel.

      • Qitkat

I had to go back and look, how funny. How do photo editors miss these things?

      • conniemd

Great catch. That is seriously freaky photoshop. Obviously her knee on the standing leg should be at the same place as the kneeling knee. Ugh.

    • Jessica Freeman

While she looks great, i prefer for her to look like herself. Which I don’t think she does here. Also, I miss her with brown or red hair.

    • ailujailuj

total dior. she gives good pose, too. totally have a now-not-so-secret crush on her.

    • crash1212

She looks beautiful. That line of Dior’s, however…not so much for me.

    • cowper

The cover is terrible! She looks like a plastic blow-up doll.

    • lockmm

She doesn’t even look like herself on the cover!

    • Jane Donuts

They made her into Deneuve in Belle de Jour. Predictable, but gorgeous just the same.

    • Belvane

I have to disagree — everything that makes Scarlett beautiful is missing here. Warmth, softness, lushness, youth, sensuality, personality, you name it. She’s a non-entity here, a vehicle for the clothes. Which is fine for a fashion model, but not for an editorial shoot about an actual human.

      • Tatiana Luján

She looks so generic in this editorial.

      • Monzerrat Ontiveros

she doesn´t even look like herself in the cover..

        • CakesOnAPlane

I thought it was Kate Upton…

    • MilaXX

Those are teo complicated and not necessarily pretty dresses that she is somehow working. Hire that team immediately!

    • sleah_in_norcal

i seriously thought she might have a napkin tucked under her chin in that second look. and i wondered if she was just about to lift up her skirt and show us her butt. she looks lovely, though.

    • TSkot

Cover is too Joan Collins for a gal her age.

    • carnush

      She should wear more Dior.

    • Gaby

She looks… odd on the cover. Not like herself. It’s weirding me out a little. She’s werqing the shit out of the dress, but the face on the cover is a different, unrecognizable person.

    •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

AMEN. She’s making the Dior on the cover sing.

    • TigerLaverada

A pretty girl, but she doesn’t look much like Scarlett J. I mostly recognized her in the cover shot by her figure, which is remarkably curvy in this day of stick-thin starlets.

      • anyalama

That first dress looks ridiculous on the runway model. Some clothes need the curves to make them really sing.

    • Anniebet

Yes, she looks good, but I would think a celeb would like to be recognizable as herself. Here she resembles a plastic doll version of a generic beautiful blonde. The mag managed to play down or completely cover up her two most famous assets – those lips and the bosom.

    • raininmai

All I can say is that I like her hair. Her face is blank and airbrushed to perfection. Yuck.

    • PastryGoddess

Love the Bridget Bardot hair on her. Not sure why they photoshopped her face with an eraser..but hey from the eyebrows up and neck down she looks great

    • Carol

      Also, don’t wear bibs.

    • NOLA_gal

I don’t know, that cover photo looks nothing like ScarJo. Seriously. What kind PS’ing did they do to her?

    • Gwyndall

She reminds me of Kim Cattrall a bit, especially in the second shot.

      But definitely not Scarlett…

    • fringebenefit

Scarlett looks divine. The clothes? Very wayward Dior. Awful.

    • Sally3000

I didn’t recognize her in the cover picture. She looks like Catherine Oxenberg in Dynasty. She is an astoundingly beautiful woman. To make her unrecognizable doesn’t make sense to me, unless it’s for an acting role.

    • j_anson

Ugh, no, this is not working for me at all. They took all the character out of her face. I literally don’t recognize the cover photo as being her. Even knowing who it is, it doesn’t look like her. And whoever it is looks deeply vapid.

      • halleygee

Agree, she is unrecognizable on the cover. Photoshop crazy.

    • PinkySlinky

      eh not my fav…

    • HobbitGirl

Enh. The second picture makes her look like she’s got a napkin tucked in her shirt ready to eat lobster or something. Doesn’t jive with the “Oooh I’m so sexy” look she’s trying for.

    • Miss WKS

Cathryn Deneuve. Sum serious Catherine Deneuve.

      • largishbearishAtlish

Cathryn Deneuve seriously serving Dim Sum?

    • msdamselfly

    • Judy_S

I kept staring at the one picture thinking, “Well, that was a cute idea to tuck a napkin into her collar, but then we can’t see the top very well…”

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

And she should take the dress from the cover with her and use it in a luncheon or a TV appearance.

    • nannypoo

Beautiful makeup. She looks a little vacant but very pretty.

    • ballerinawithagun

Somebody probably said this but…Why do you have a gigantic napkin tucked in at your neck and carrying a silver tray??? She is so beautiful! This is as thin as she should get…

      • largishbearishAtlish

I know (its a chair, look at it again- I saw the same thing)

        • ballerinawithagun

Thanks!!! I’m embarrassed….but silver tray fit in with so many of the other references!

    • CC06

I am not sure if I would recognize her in the cover picture without being told.

    • peachykeen5014

      I didn’t even recognize her.

    • Sara Leigh Merrey

Okay, the second ensemble looks like there’s a napkin hanging from her neck. Poor styling and composition for that one.

      • JauntyJohn

Agreed — it’s the composition. Why they put her in front of a dining table in what looks like a hotel banquet room is beyond anyone with sense. That and the color contrast between top and … napkin-part-of-top.

    • alyce1213

      Pretty, but vacant.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I know I’m dating myself with this comment but what the hey! She looks just like ‘Avengers’ Era Diana Rigg in the cover shot. And that scrumptious look never goes out of style

    • Jennifer Morrill Patterson

That first dress looks a hella lot better on her than the runway model.

    • Virginie

She’s totally unrecognizable in the cover.

    • CatherineRhodes

      Young Catherine Deneuve!

    • snarkykitten

oh I thought your advice was going to be CLOSING YOUR F’ING MOUTH

    • Dagney

GORGEOUS. T & L- that was my first thought too, this is your look Scarlett, run with it because you are shutting it down.

    • altissima

She’d need to round up the photoshopper too.

    • girliecue

Did she just rush out from an appointment with the world’s most expensive dentist? If my dentist used gorgeously draped silk couture spit bibs I’d take it too.

    • demidaemon

She does look good, but she also looks criminally bored. Some facial energy needed here, Miss Johansson.

    • Sonja Brisson

She looks great, but what’s with the bib?

    • SylviaFowler

This can only be described as photoshop on steriods.

    • Cameron Turner

      Amen and Halleluiah

    • MannahattaMamma

Deneuve in the first pic for sure although the airbrushing cadre seems to have wiped the personality out of her face altogether. And is no one bothered by the napkin/bib in the second shot? Am very confused

    • ankali

Oooh, the Hitchcock blonde on that cover looks AMAZING. That may be the best photo I’ve seen of her.

    • marshmallowjane

I’m thinking lobster for dinner in the second outfit.

I prefer her in darker lipstick. She usually looks beautiful in the photos I’ve seen of her. I don’t like these all that much. The first outfit (coat or dress) doesn’t look great head on, but in a bent position, the garment works.

    • LauraAgain

      Scarlett Johannson? Are you sure?

And that second dress is just awful.

      • veleri

Exactly. First pic: unrecognizable. Look at the eyes!

    • 1tsplove

Maybe this is a given, but I feel like the first picture is super photoshopped! She looks more like Amanda Seyfried…

    • Tracy M

Really? A bib and a coma-face? This vacant, dull-eyed, lax-mouth thing? Maybe that’s why she needs the bib…

    • Lesley

finally, she looks very pretty and super feminine, which is such a good look for her.lately she’s been taking herself way to serious when she shows up at events. she needs to hire the stylist and hair & makeup team on this shoot and never let them go.

    • Aaminah Khan

Cover photo doesn’t even look like her, but the second one is pretty.

      • Not applicable

ITA! I thought the same thing! really underplayed her beauty– I’d be pissed. 😉

    • BuffaloBarbara

I really love the second dress on the runway, but the pose they have Miss Scarlett in for her picture makes it look like the little capelet thing is accidental.

    • quitasarah

In that first pic I thought she was Natalie Dormer who I thought was younger than SJ, but is actually older by 3 years. What a difference a good makeup gay makes.

    • irielle

I didn’t recognize her at all in the cover shot.

    • judybrowni

It’s unfortunate she was posed next to a dining table, because all I can think is “Napkin Bib Dress.”

    • Wrenaria

For a second I thought I was looking at Ashley Benson.

    • Vera

She looks like she’s sporting a bib in the second photo of her. Bad posing.
