Cover Girl: Katy Perry for Vogue

Posted on June 17, 2013

We feel like proud gay uncles who spent years indulging a wacky niece with horrible taste only to see her turn into a princess.

Katy Perry covers the July 2013 issue of Vogue magazine in a Rodarte dress photographed by Annie Leibovitz.

Our little girl is all grown up. Snf.

But we fully expect her to look like a cartoon character again shortly.

Rodarte Fall 2013 Collection/Model: Agne Konciute

We love how Vogue styled this dress for the cover by essentially covering up 2/3 of it in order to make it look like an entirely different dress.

I know juxtaposition is Rodarte’s thing but the fuchsia is making my teeth itch.

      • conniemd

The fuschia and chartreuse just don’t go with the red and black.

      • Little_Olive

All I can see is “V for Vendetta” on fabric that used to belong to Oscar de la Renta.

However, this is the first Rodarte I see that doesn’t make me gag.

My day is made when I find that the TLo commentary echos the opinions I’ve formed in my little head. My exact thought as I scrolled was “WOW, they’ve managed to cover up all that hiddy in the middle of the dress.” All that aside, it’s a pretty enough cover, but I wish they’d done more with her eye makeup.

    • Nikko Viquiera

if only her face hadn’t been photoshopped to death…

    • decormaven

The eye makeup looks a bit wonky, but it’s a very pretty shot. Good call on the dress styling!

    • crash1212

Wow, that dress looks SO much better sitting down.

    • Monzerrat Ontiveros

she looks great, crazy photoshoped in the shoulder but still good! And also a little bit white snowish…

    • Janet B

      That’s some dress.

    • Ass Kicking Adviser

I know right? They’re always professing their ‘love’ of Rodarte. But it’s like she’s their cool friend that they talk about all the time but then they never call her to go have a beer. They keep her at arm’s length because frankly, no matter how cool she is (they are), this just isn’t pretty.

    • StrandedFashionista

I definitely had a ‘Gay Gasp’ moment when I saw the cover for the first time because she looked so beautiful. Even sitting down, it’s a dress that few women could work successfully and it turned out that Katy was one of them.

    • majorbedhead

I think they styled it perfectly because that is one fugly dress on the model.

She looks lovely. She’s a really beautiful woman – it’s nice to see her looking non-cartoonish.

    • StellaZafella

So, really nice to see Katie-did taking more of her beauty cues from Deeta Von Tease now, instead of My Little Pony.

    • sleah_in_norcal

i must be the only person on earth (besides the rodarte ladies) who loves this dress. i’d like to actually see katy wearing it. i must have tie-dyed my soul in the seventies.

    • barbarienne

They really just wanted it to be a rose print, instead of a rose print with a weird tie-dye-hippie-head-shop schmatte over it.

    • Emily Wilson

This cover is way too reminiscent of their holiday issue with Anne Hathaway.

    • Kimberlini

So nice to see Katy with gorgeous hair and makeup…especially the latter.

    • marlie

KP looks so pretty here! And it’s still a weird, Katy-ish dress, only classy(er).

    • random_poster

Kudos to Vogue for masterfully re-working that monstrosity. That scroll-down was no where near what I was expecting. The cover really sells the good aspects of the dress.

    • Lori

      1. Katy looks really good.

      2. Vogue’s styling choices make that dress look about 100X better than it actually is. Way to go Vogue stylists.

      3. The word “toughest” should really not be used to modify the word “spa”. I’m not sure what the place in question should be called, but I stand firmly behind the opinion that it should not be “spa”.

      4. The idea of a mainstream fashion magazine declaring unique the new chic makes me LOL. I’m not sure if that makes me a realist or incredibly cynical.

      • Little_Olive

Boy, I gather when “Good Sex” is opposed to a “Good Mood”, a Tough Spa is just what you need

        • Lori

          Well, there is that.

    • Little_Olive

“We love how Vogue styled this dress for the cover by essentially covering up 2/3 of it in order to make it look like an entirely different dress.”

      Great minds, etc.

      And she is SELLING it.

    • MilaXX

I think Katy the cartoon character will always be there. Google her latest video with the cats. She’s just learned when to deploy the cartoon look and when to dress like a grown up
Correction, it’s a commercial for popchips & it’s kinda cute.

    • jmorino08

It says something about her signature look that she appears to have significantly less eye makeup on in this Vogue cover shot than she usually does in real life.

    • VicD

Yep, sitting down with the dress in a bunch is the ONLY way to make that dress look good.

    • unbornfawn

It looks much better with 2/3 of the dress hidden. Katy looks good.

    • Noelle

Good thing they covered up 2/3 of that beast! It looks super cute on Katy, but my god, the full version!! Why, why, why!?!?

    • Sunraya

Her skin looks gorgeous in this dress! Beautiful cover!

    • BuffaloBarbara

I looks like much better dress on the cover — love it there!

    • pugluv

Katy looks really pretty here and the red hues of the dress really set off her skin. I like the dress as Vogue styled it but I can’t say the same looking at the runway version. I think Katy should avoid the cartoon look of the past, this is far more flattering.

    • ankali

That is some seriously smart posing and styling. If I hadn’t known better, I’d have thought the dress was some cute over-the-top Dolce & Gabbana floral embroidered thing instead of that fashion abortion.

    • Qitkat

The original dress looks like some kind of eagle feather headdress hanging down the front, only in psychedelic colors.
But Katy looks classy and beautiful in the restyled dress.

    • Jecca2244

have not understood Rodarte’s esthetic in seasons. would love to see their sales figures. Katy looks good here. Vogue needs a cover refresher. literally feels like the same 10 women all the time. Little annoyed they didn’t put Amy Adams on the cover for June, still. ugh i need to get off my soapbox.

More blooming Country Couture. This is the red version of that blue Teen Vogue one in April 2012, which was itself completely unoriginal.

    • librarygrrl64

Yikes! Vogue made the right decision by showing the only attractive part of the dress. That thing is hiddy to the max.
