Cathy Cambridge Goes Walkies

Posted on June 13, 2013

We so wanted to title this post “CATHY CAMBRIDGE SKINS A PUPPY” but we figured we might get in trouble for that. So we put it in the first line of the post instead. Wasn’t that thoughtful of us?

Besides, we love this look; it’s sort of a “Princess Cruella de Vil greets her troops” drag. Very cheeky and bold on her part.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge attends the Princess Cruises ship naming ceremony at Ocean Terminal in Southampton, England in a Hobbs Dalmatian Coat paired with L. K. Bennett pumps and an Alexander McQueen satchel.

Hobbs London Dalmatian Coat

Alexander McQueen Wicca Mini Leather Satchel

All lame joking aside, we do love the coat. It’s very fun and eye-catching. Since she’s so scared of color most of the time, she might as well have fun with her neutrals.

We have to say, though – and we’re quite sure we’re going to get in trouble for this – we don’t love the kinds of hats she chooses for herself. They really don’t do much to set off her face or hair. We think she’d be much better with hats that don’t sit forward or too high on the head and she shouldn’t default to dark hats, like she seems to, since her hair is dark and there’s not enough contrast for public appearances and photos.

Please don’t have us beheaded, ma’am.

And the legs still look great. She shows us how to do pregnant with style.

  • lexilexi

Her face is a little fuller now, and she looks so healthy – a joy to see. And of course, she continues to show off that gorgeous ring every chance she gets. I like her coat/dress too.

  • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

That coat is to die for. Brava, princess!

Agree about the hats, but it’s probably tough to pull off something different without seeming like a hipster. Those Brits.

  • gabbilevy

Agree on the hat, totally, but the dress is fun. And I do believe she’s looking lovelier than ever. Pregnancy suits her.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

    PUPPIES!!! lol!
Long live the Princess. Love her.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I agree completely about her hat choices. Particularly now that her face is a trifle fuller, with her pregnancy, the small size of these fascinators only serves to broaden her face. Now should she have chosen something with a substantial brim width, it would have been killa.

    • 1964edithgrove

Royals don’t wear broad brims — theory being that it hides the face from those who’ve turned up to see them.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

        Ah well. I can dream, can’t I?

      • NC_Meg

Camilla seems to wear a lot of brimmed hats. But Camilla and Duchess Kate are in different boats, so to speak. (And no pun intended, promise!)

        • marlie

The Queen wears a lot of brimmed hats as well. But she’s the Queen, so she can do whatever the hell she wants.

          • NC_Meg

            Very true!

      • Yulie29

Actually, the Duchess of Cornwall wears bit hats quite often (there a few examples here: http://orderofsplendor.blogspot.co.il/2011/03/flashback-friday-camillas.html), and plenty of non-UK royals do, too.

        • Tippi123

This link doesn’t work unfortunately… Could you fix it, please?

    • StellaZafella

      …It would have been Cruella!

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I think just an inch more all around would be better proportions for her.

  • http://thatswhatthemoneyisfor.wordpress.com/ lizlemonglasses

I’m sort of “meh” on this particular outfit, but I really wish she’d back away from the eyeliner a little. I realize this has been discussed at length by the BKs; it bears repeating.

    • VeryClaire

She’s really ready for a professional make up job now.

  • Emily Dagger

Before I even saw your hat comment, I was scrolling down ready to post “god, I hate her hats.” I never thought a joyless fascinator was possible, but she seems to have a closet full of them — sad, dour little hat-on-a-diet numbers.

    • TLJezebel

      Hat on a diet!!! Hilarious.

  • alyce1213

My first reaction was exactly “Ugh, another silly saucer hat.” They do nothing for her and, I think, detract from the overall wonderfulness that is Cathy. Adorable coat and I’m so glad to see her wearing black shoes, just for a change.

  • Leslie

My problem with this stubborn perseverance of “hat culture” is that a lot of its wearers don’t seem to understand that an updo is really required to make hats like these work. They’re not utilitarian at all (no hat like that is going to protect you from the sun), and as such, should be treated as an adornment for the crown, one that needs STRUCTURE to FRAME it. Otherwise it just looks like you have popped into the milliner’s while shopping for groceries and decided to walk out wearing your purchase. It just looks terribly underdone.

  • Patricia Gillett

Well, you may not have used the puppy line on the headline here but I’m going to call you out anyway since you put it in your tweet! :)

This coat is adorable on her. I love that it’s fun and it’s pretty clear that she looks her best when she has fun with the clothing choices and stops trying to be Grandma Betty 2.0.

The hats don’t bother me because I always assume they’re a British thing I am never going to get until I fulfill my dream of moving to Britain.

  • Heather

She looks lovely, but my favorite part is actually her manicure. Pretty and tasteful. Claw-possessors, take note!

Also, isn’t this an odd event for her to attend? Aren’t Princess Cruises a commercial line? Is this something she’s getting paid for, a la Paris Hilton showing up at a Vegas party? If so, that seems a little… declasse for a princess.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Or as Bethenny would say: “Dis-Countess”

    • telophase

Yup–Princess Cruises gets a different royal to ‘sponsor’ each new ship, and she got tapped for their newest. We took a Princess cruise earlier this year and it was all over the brochures for the Royal Princess. Gotta wonder how much it costs to book a royal to sponsor your ship!

    • MikeW_Vegas

If I remember correctly, I believe Princess Diana also did a Princess Cruise launch as well. and this IS the “Royal Princess” you can’t just have ANYBODY christen a ship like that!

      • Heather

No I get it from the cruise line’s perspective… am just surprised she would agree to it is all.

    • xmixiex

I think it’s primarily because its built in England at Southampton, which of course has a long ship building history.

      • Roza

Also by her attending the event she shows her support for the Port of Southampton which is vital to the English economy.

    • Roza

Actually, this event brought attention and money to several charities of hers. The children who brought her the scissors are affiliated with EACH. Also, many of the charity workers were invited to the reception in recognition of all the hard work that they do. Her patronages are built in to any request for her to attend an event.

      • Heather

        Cool, thanks for that explanation.

  • MGMcD

I need that coat to complete my life.

I will say, I almost always love how she dresses, but I also almost always wish she’d wear a darker lip color. Not saying a princess should trot out the jungle red or anything, but she has somewhat thin lips anyway and that nude just makes them disappear. A nice rose or berry would help set off her lovely face.

  • majorbedhead

I have always loved that ring.

I agree with the hats, but mostly because I think those fascinator hats look silly no matter who’s wearing them. Just wear a hat, madam. You’ll look fine. Or don’t wear a hat. Also fine.

  • kbshee

She looks a bit like Diana Rigg back in the day. Love this look.

  • MK03

I hate those silly little hats. I want to see her in a “Rose boarding the Titanic” hat.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Aside from Halloween, when would you want to look like a Dalmatian? I just do not get that.

    • Kat

      Psh, every day!!

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

        Touche.

    • another_laura

One of the more stylish dogs, no?

  • TLJezebel

She probably has some poor underling pummel her legs into shape every night.
    She looks amazing.

  • Yulie29

It would be fantastic if she could pull off the sort of hats that Camilla or Queen Maxima wear, but I don’t think those would suit her, either.

I don’t like the coat or the hat, but Duchess Cathy herself looks lovely.

  • Shannon

Anyone else impressed by the fact that she’s still strutting around in heels?? She’s due in only a couple weeks!

  • FlyoverFi

She has done such an amazing job finding maternity wear that photographs beautifully from head-on. She’s due in a month and she barely shows at all other than in that photo showing her from the side.

  • msdamselfly

Coat looks great–good to see her in something more playful

Tired of the traditional fascinator hats, though

  • EEKstl

She looks great – isn’t she due in, like, a month? She’s the poster-mom-to-be for how all women dream they will look while pregnant. And may I say I actually prefer her slightly fuller face. She looked too gaunt before she got preggers. That said, the hat doesn’t bother me nearly as much as the shoes – the latest in an endless parade of DULL pumps. Plain and classic need NOT mean dull, ladies!

    • Roza

I don’t think shoes are meant to be noticed at all. I want people to notice my face and figure….not my feet. Do you like people looking at your feet instead of your face. I’m not trying to be sarcastic by the way.

  • Joyce VG

The hats are bothersome but who cares! She a beauty.

  • deathandthestrawberry

I was just thinking, before I finished your post, how I hate the hat. It looks juvenile and fussy.

  • In_Stitches

She’s having so much more fun with her fashion as a pregnant lady than she was before, as a new Duchess. I hope the trend continues post-baby.

  • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Please school me o thou bitter kittens (and unborn fawns): Will I be confined to the Tower for mentioning that the HRH slip is showing in a couple of the photos? Or is mentioning that SIMPLY NOT DONE?

    • Lori

I thought that at first glance too and then I realized that’s her dress. The top layer is a coat, not a coat dress.

      • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Thank you for that clarification! I see what you mean now…

        • VeryClaire

I was concerned too. I do not want to see the slip of the future Queen of England!

  • Macunaima

Ugh. Sorry, I cannot get behind animal prints, even on this classiest of classy ladies. They still just scream WalMart to me.

  • LearnedFoot

She’s nine months pregnant and still has perfect ankles. Witchcraft is the only possible explanation.

    • http://communionoflight.com/ Frank Butterfield

Has she turned anyone into a newt yet?

      • LearnedFoot

Yep. But I got better. :)

        • busyworke

And your mother smelled of elderberries. :-)

    • decormaven

Or else she’s got one heck a of masseuse who knows how to relieve edema.

    • Darva Sutra

Her purse is called Wicca – maybe that’s her dark magic? Whatever, it’s working and she’s as lovely as ever. Bitch!!

  • Belvane

Of all the things I like about the Duchess, one of the most endearing is that she knows everyone wants to see Diana’s ring, so she very kindly and gracefully makes sure they can.

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I totally agree with you. I love that about her. :)

  • Donna Tabor

My thoughts exactly about the hats. That one is just silly.

Not especially fond of the coat, since it is so shapeless, but the print is fun.

Isn’t she due in the next month?

    • MikeW_Vegas

Yes, She is due next month.. This is expected to be one of her last “public” appearances.

  • GorgeousThings

That kind of fascinator is very big with young women these days. They remind me of the hat that Karen Allen wore in “Scrooged” during the Ghost of Christmas Future segment. I didn’t like them back in the 80s, I don’t care for them now.

That’s a cute little clutch she’s carrying. Any idea whose that is?

    • Jessica Freeman

      Caption says its McQueen

  • LaSylphide

She looks great, but she really needs some lip color.

  • Tatiana Luján

Is there a hat you would like for her to wear? I don’t know anything about hats.

  • Jessica Freeman

The hat also detracts from her lovely face. I want to yank it back a few inches. She is still completely classy. Full stop.

  • mjude

she is such a doll. i have loved her look all thru her pregnancy. good luck little queen.

  • Sara__B

Aw, shucks. She’s just so darned pretty and classy. The minute I see I photo of her, I lose all objectivity.

  • MoHub

See my vest! See my vest! made of real gorilla chest!

    • filmcricket

      Brava.

      • MoHub

I knew someone would get it.

  • MarieLD

I think I remember reading that she doesn’t like to wear hats so opts for these ridiculous fascinators instead. I wish she’d just wear a hat.

  • librarygrrl64

“We think she’d be much better with hats that don’t sit forward”

Agreed. Not only do they cast a shadow, but she has a beautiful face that should be shown off.

  • MilaXX

Maybe she does the front of the head thing because she likes her hair flowing in the back. Anyhoo, she looks cute.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000088447181 Sam Smith

I really like this outfit, my only complaint, and it is one I have in general with her, is she seems to always opt for something so heavy looking. I know its England, but it is June, this just seems to cold weather for me.

    • Roza

i lived there for 2 years and by the sea the breeze is quite chilly. However, being Pregnant I would think she would be feeling overheated. Who know???

  • bertkeeter

Agree on Hats…too old and serious for her…shades of Princess Anne..YIKES! Would have liked a black bag. Good shot of that amazing ring!

    • Roza

I love princess anne’s style. she doesn’t chase styles and is the same size as she was before she married and had children.

  • xmixiex

    that ring.

  • marlie

Very pretty! And the hat doesn’t bother me.

  • Janet B

I’d love to have that coat for just a week.

  • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

See, I love her hats. I wish I could get some of those hats, as I enjoy wearing hats any time. I like this look, but can’t believe she’s still wearing such high heels at this point.

  • Monzerrat Ontiveros

Kim take note: This is how you do pregnant classy!!!

    • LaSylphide

I think you’ll need to explain to her what ‘classy’ means.

      • myristica_fragrans

        you mean klassy.

  • MsALVA

She needs a Royal Gay to gently but forcefully pry that darn black eyeliner away from her. She’s so pretty, I wish she’d go a little lighter on her eye makeup. Black is so harsh, and paired with the pink blush, it’s just a very outdated look.

    • Roza

Fortunately, Prince William doesn’t agree, because she’s worn that look for years and he married her and they remain in love. I think she’s pretty with the eyeliner. Do you really not like it? Her coloring is so dark it works to me.

  • Jonquil

Totally agree about her fascinators. She doesn’t seem to choose ones that suit her very well.

  • GillianHolroyd

Now see, I think the hat tilted over the forehead is balanced by the length of the hair in back, as seen in the profile photo.

The coat, the legs, the shoes… stunning.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I wish I were elegant enough to have gone through pregnancy in coat dresses, let alone heels. Really a fantastic look. And wouldn’t it be great if she had more fun with her hats?

  • unbornfawn

The girl has style. I look forward to her feeling more comfortable in her role and taking full command of her style choices, she’ll be knocking our socks off.

  • girliecue

Black dots on a white field will never fail to delight me. Love the Dalmatians AND Cruella! And the cut of the coat is cute too.

  • crash1212

Girl’s got legs! I love that coat and think the hat’s cute.

  • largishbearishAtlish

God what a killer smile! What joy! (I like how the first shot was not, so the second pic really…<> and the legs are nice. I like how the spots of the coat play with her belly shape so that its not ‘a maternity dress’ but something…well, fun.

  • Funkykatt

When is the next Queen of England due?

    • Roza

Ummmm, the next Queen of England is Camilla Duchess of Cornwall who had a hysterectomy a few years back.

  • Valdri8

I wish that she would look on Pinterest and do something interesting with her hair. Those Pinterest bitches could braid a bitch.

    • Roza

She will probably have to once her child starts pulling on her hair.

  • Claudia Berry

I covet her legs. Of course, her legs are as long as I am tall so that won’t happen, but still.

  • Judy_J

Her legs are perfect. Perfectly perfect.

  • Aurumgirl

I was just thinking that as I looked at this photo: she has horrible taste in hats, and she really needs help from a good stylist. There’s no reason she can’t look incredible in them, but I’ve yet to see her in a hat that isn’t awful.

    • Roza

Did you not like the red hat she wore with her Red McQueen dress?

  • Puckndc

The Duchess of Cambridge or Kimye Katrashian for class during pregnancy…hmmm lemme decide….

  • myristica_fragrans

i wish you would cover some of the other royal families. she’s so boring.

  • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

You guys just gave the Suri’s Burn Book version of Suri her dream on a silver platter.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go throw a tantrum because that McQueen purse is no longer available.

  • bellafigura1

OMG the hats are making me cray cray. I just can. not. get behind a jokey whimsey thing plopped on the head. So awkward looking. Sorry, Brits.

  • Louise Bryan

Humph! I LOVE the hat! And the coat, and the teeny, tiny, useless purse.

  • LaurieS

I have one question: HOW THE HELL does she walk in those heels while pregnant?? Is no one else wondering this? Am I the only person who couldn’t tolerate any shoes more strenuous than my fuzzy kitty slippers while pregnant?

  • DamH

    the hat is too cartoony

  • Buffy

Wasn’t sure about the coat at first, but it’s growing on me the more I look at it. Don’t love the hat, but she has worse ones. I can’t walk in heels at all so she gets major props from me for walking around in those at 8 mo pregnant. She looks great.

  • lobsterlen

I have a funny feeling she is not really a hat person and only wears them because of protocol. I love the coat and adore the accidental stink eye in the 8th image.

  • MaggieMae

Smashing coat! Agreed about the hat.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Since we seem to have finished with the Mad Men cat naming, can we talk about what this baby should be named? I’m thinking they’ll go for another Charlie myself. Although those haven’t done well in the British monarchy, have they? Better to default back to a George, I suppose. Or maybe it doesn’t matter. Maybe Queen Liz is never going to leave that throne, not even for her great-great-grandchild.

  • Aisa Ginger Jake Psenicnik

    200 POUNDS AND ABANDONED!

  • mary

Did anyone notice her nails? That French Mani doesn’t look very neat…the white trims are all uneven and look like they are chipped…maybe she did it herself in a rush?? Show’s how down-to-earth she is, I think.

  • anotherkate

Killa coat (is it ever warm in England? Truly warm? Perhaps not). I think she needs a makeup consult, though–she doesn’t need so much blush when she’s rocking a pregnancy glow!
