Anna Kendrick in Donna Karan Atelier

Posted on June 10, 2013

This is working amazingly well on her:

Anna Kendrick attends the 2013 Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York City in a Donna Karan Atelier navy and black chiffon and silk crepe gown accessorized with Amrapali jewelry and an Edie Parker clutch.

Donna Karan Atelier Gown

That’s not an easy kind of dress to pull off, and we’re not really in love with the sheer panels, let alone the tumble of fussiness running down her torso, but it’s nice to see her in something so grown-up and elegant. The blue-black combo looks great on her and despite all the fussiness, the dress is amazingly flattering on her. Also: gorgeous hair and makeup. Nicely done, girl.

One of the best dresses of the night in a sea of- wtf were you thinking when you dressed this evening? – moments..

  • majorbedhead

I have a visceral, violent hatred of black and navy together. Blame my Catholic school uniform, I guess, but I would have liked this a whole lot better if it was all in navy.

    • http://wretchedrefuseblog.wordpress.com/ Wretched Refuse

I used to hate black and navy too, but after a period of intense
black-and-navy in fashion mags in the mid-aughts, I came around. Maybe
      I’ve been brainwashed…

    • JulieK

Me too! I thought I was the only person left that hated black and navy together!

      • majorbedhead

We can form a tiny little support group.

        • RedRaven617

I’ll join. Black and brown looks classy; black and navy blue? I can’t.

    • homespunner

      Blavy.

  • Annarosa

I completely agree on hair and make up, but I don’t like this dress, it makes her look… a little disheveled.

  • Jen

I don’t get this dress, but her head looks really great.

  • Diego!

She looks amazing and is working the sh*t out of that really strange dress. Go girl! :D

    • http://www.djplaw.com/ Tadiana

No kidding! That dress is looking far better on her than it has any right to look. The designer should send Anna a fat bonus.

      • Diego!

hahaa WORD! She is rocking it!

    • Rhonda Shore

She looks fabulous DESPITE the dress!!!

  • Janet B

    She looks stunning

  • Sara__B

Maybe it was the fault of lighting, but many actors at the Tonys had faces that were noticeably different colors than the rest of their skin. That two-tone effect plus the sheer panels are my only complaints about this ensemble.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

That is a LOT of dress. But man she is conquering it, and making it work. Totally agree about those sheer panels. I get the intent of the design, but a different sheer wouldn’t have developed that weird moire’ effect. I see that a lot in poly chiffons I’ve worked with, but never in silk.

    • Monabel

Thanks for your technical explanations! As well as the opinions, of course, goes without saying.

  • mjude

not a fan of the dress but she is pretty

  • Mary229

Best I’ve ever seen her look. Cute girl and super talented actress.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I’d love to see this dress in an editorial

  • mjude

i dont care for the dress but she looks pretty

  • gabbilevy

    Lookin good, Mrs. Jamie Wellerstein.

  • jhedman

Surprisingly accurate translation from the sketch to reality. Usually something gets left behind, but here they pulled it off well when perhaps they should not have, considering how over-designed it is. Still, she looks great in it.

  • teensmom99

DK somehow makes the sheer panel work.

  • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

She’s tiny, and some of these gowns don´t favor small women, yet, she’s making it work beautifully. And I have to agree on the stunning hair and makeup.

  • barbarienne

I’m officially DONE with sheer panels. I used to think they were cool, a daring way to show skin without showing skin, but they’ve gotten so overplayed that designers are forced to put them in odd places in ungraceful ways.

Yes, she’s working this dress to a greater value than it intrinsically has. But it would look a million times better without that focus-pulling thing under her left breast. Oi.

  • Lisa Utter

I can’t unsee that nipple shield’s corner or whatever it is dangling into the sheer panel. But she’s working that dress like the rent’s due.

  • Daisy Walker

ETA: I went back and looked again and decided I don’t like it. The puddle of material on the bottom is swamping her and the asymmetry on the bodice is making my eye twitch.

  • decormaven

The sheer panel is a bit off-putting, but she is working this look for all it’s worth. One of her best looks.

  • Lori

She really does look good, and all the credit for that goes to her because the more I look at the dress the odder it seems. I would have liked it a lot more without the sheer panels or the asymmetric bodice, which is doing weird things to her boobs.

    • Write On

Yes, I’m afraid Ms. Kendrick has a titscrepency. I’m impressed that she mostly overcomes it.

  • crash1212

Beautiful. Plus, she tweeted that her brother couldn’t put her in a headlock as long as she had the “fancy hair” – having brothers, I know exactly what she’s talking about.

  • marlie

Her hair and makeup look great, but I can’t get past the titscrepancy, the awful-looking, wrinkly sheer panels, and the weird train. Though I agree that the colors are great.

  • l_c_ann

That odd droopy trailing train is straight from the snail monster in Monsters, Inc.

  • formerlyAnon

    I like.

  • random_poster

I’ll go along with the others saying that hair/make up are pretty, but the dress is not. The way it lies makes it look like someone tried to cut a slit in the dress from the top, and a stream of navy material tumbled out and fell down her left side.

  • Erica_Vuitton

A beautiful concept ruined by the trend of random sheer panels. I’m also feeling ranty about the frayed edges on the navy fabric… really?? Frayed unfinished edges on a prob what $10-$15G custom gown? It looks unfinished yet overworked at the same time. Positives: hair, make up and jewelry are perfect that side profile pic is stunning!!

  • FeminineLipstique

I actually didn’t realize those were sheer panels at first. I thought it was a bronze-colored fabric and thought it was very pretty. Overall, though, she looks great especially since she seemed to favor washed out colors for a while.

  • alyce1213

The dress looks better on paper, the sheer panels are horrid. Hair and makeup are lovely though.

  • jmorino08

What is the point of those peek-a-boob panels? The dress loses about a thousand class and style points because of them.

  • MilaXX

The sheer bits ruin it for me. Her face and hair on the other hand, are the best I have ever seen on her.

  • mhleta

That’s a lot of look for a tiny girl, but she’s really owning it. I’m in the minority in that I really like the sheer panels. They give much needed lightness to this garment. Hair and makeup are beautiful and God bless her for standing up straight and throwing her shoulders back. No duck face, no smolder/smizing, no leg thrusting. Class, beauty and elegance personified. I give her a resounding, “Hell, yes!”

  • MaggieMae

    Eye make-up is stunning. Nice.

  • Carla_Charlton

FINALLY! This is the first time she’s ever looked really good.

  • sk8tfan

She’s one of those people, like Emma Stone and Emma Watson, that I am predisposed to love. So I would like this anyway, but the fact it’s actually pretty and flattering justifies my love.

  • nannypoo

She’s so pretty and she looks great here. I don’t like the sheer panels, but everything else is working well, especially the hair and makeup.

  • aahlife

I can’t sign on to this one, the dress looks poorly constructed, the fabric is overworked. You can also see the bottom of her adhesive bra through the mesh.

  • Damien W

Love it. Looking at the sketches, it makes me think this is the Miss Universe gown that Melan should have ended up with.

  • Kimberlini

    I love the jewelry.

  • kim bunchalastnames

the titscrepancy bugs a little — i think it would have looked better with the one shoulder strap, as depicted in the drawing. but. small quibble. she looks great, and the color is amazing on her.

  • Tatiana Luján

That is one ugly bodice. Her face looks great and the skirt looks great, but ugh, that bodice is just awful.

  • http://twitter.com/yessveee Sarah V.

Personal best by leaps and bounds above anything else she’s worn. I’ve always said if I ever got to hit a red carpet, it’d be wearing Donna Karan.

  • MandyM

This is pitch perfect! (sorry, I had to!)
THIS is how to do seer panels and a huge hip ruffle.
    Not that: http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2013/05/nieves-alvarez-in-ralph-russo-couture.html
    Or that: http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2013/04/in-or-out-gwyneth-paltrow-in-antonio-berardi.html
It’s a lot of dress on her but she looks so pretty and she is pulling it off.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I don’t know why I have this unreasonable hatred for her. She seems innocuous enough. Maybe because she got so much press for the Clooney movie when she seemed only aw’ight to me. Anyway, I’m sure she’s lovely and the dress is lovely on her, but I look at her and I roll my eyes and wish to see someone else instead. I feel the same way about the other one who looks like her — Anna Camp, maybe? — a blonder version who seems to show up everywhere. I do know why I don’t like her, though. She was in a play I HATED HATED HATED and I hated her performance most of all.

  • ashtangajunkie

I absolutely love seeing a beautiful updo with a gown…It seems so rare lately.

  • demidaemon

This is one dress, I think, that works better if you see it from far away. Then all the unnecessary details melt away and all you see is the flattering silhouette.

  • cowper

It’s embarrassing to see two dresses mating in public. I had to look away.

  • JP

    I love everything about this.

  • PrunellaV

This would have so much better without the sheer panels. They look like a mistake, like the seams are coming undone.

  • Gloriana Reginata

One of the few dresses where I’ve actually liked the sheer panels: from a distance, they read as a warm, coffee-brown detail against the navy, rather than as an attempt to bare as much flesh as possible in odd places.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Agreed. She looked stunning. I know she is young and pretty and she has that going for her but she has a personality and maturity that many of her peers lack.

  • kimiakay

For me this is a sum of the parts thing. Each part individually has problems but put it altogether and it really works on her. Her hair and make-up are perfect, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it better. Her eyes are amazing. I don’t think there are many who could wear this dress well. Brava, Anna.

  • anotherkate

She looks great! Much better than when she first came to fame and dressed exclusively in flesh-colored little girl dresses. That blue is excellent on her, and her makeup is perfection (also, less relevantly, I think she’s funny and a great actress, so I’m happy to see her looking good).

  • Eovaai

This is the perfect colour for her.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Oh, what a yummy dress! Attagirl.

  • berkeleygirl

Especially considering she’s a mere wisp of a girl – 5′, if that, and probably 90 lbs. wet – she always knows her proportions. This, though, is a red carpet best. Everybody rise! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8y9pNqjtb0

  • bd73

    flawless

  • Aaminah Khan

I like her better with darker hair, but she still looks gorgeous. And I love a good black and navy combo! :D

    Love it.
