Amy Adams in Valentino Couture

Posted on June 13, 2013

We’ll take the bottom half, because the top’s just not doing it for us.

Amy Adams attends the UK premiere of ‘Man of Steel’ held at London’s Leicester Square in a Valentino couture dress paired with Casadei suede pumps.

Great skirt; great pair of shoes. Here endeth the compliments.

We don’t actually hate anything here, it’s just that the bodice couldn’t be any less interesting and less worthy of that skirt. Her face looks pretty and the hair is cute (okay, maybe there’s time for some mild compliments), but we don’t think they quite pop in pictures. We would imagine this looks much better in person. In a flat, not-particularly-well-lit image, it’s not that eye-catching.

We have to say, we’re disappointed that the poledance for this film – for all its participants – has been so colorless. He’s Superman, bitches; the most primary-colored hero of them all. We get that you’re trying to be all edgy and dark with the character and all, but that doesn’t mean a good red dress wouldn’t be welcome on that red blue carpet right about now.

Had her hair and make up had more oomph, this might have worked. OR, if she had worn the companion jacket, which is what gives the outfit interest in the runway shot.

    • Jessica Freeman

Agreed about the jacket, obviously the bodice was meant to be more of an undergarment. I’m not sure she could have pulled off the jacket though.

    • ConnieBV

The jacket would have killed it, or at least she could have Zod’d the whole thing up with like a killer necklace that draped over one shoulder. Jewelry armor.

    • drdarke

“High on a hill stood a lonely goatherd,”
“Lay-dee oda-lay dee oda lay dee hoo!”

Wow – without the jacket, that outfit looks like a drab dirndl. Maybe she should team with Robert Downey, Jr. in his lederhosen, and they can do a hard-rocking reboot of THE SOUND OF MUSIC…..

    • Valdri8

All of Hollywood knows that one’s arms can never be covered! Too bad, because the jacket would have knocked it out of the park!

  • A Shiny O’Connor

The whole thing lost its mojo when they ditched the underpants.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Personally I do hate the headband. She’s not 12 and she’s not at the gym.

    • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

I was thinking gym hair, too.

    • Nicholas

You just need to play this in the background for it to work.

    • Austen Jane

      Agreed. That is gym hair.

  • Jessica Freeman

That bodice is so very bad. It really ruins the look. Now would have been time to wear her hair down, or a necklace. It’s all so very boring.

    • Mary229

Considering there was a literal monsoon when this premiere was taking place….I’m gonna have to disagree that this was the time to wear her hair down. I think her hairstyle had a pretty practical purpose considering the extreme weather.

  • MaryMitch

How does anyone stand up straight – much less walk – in those shoes?

    • Beardslee

So true, they are awful. I was just thinking that these tiny celebrities have to have big feet to wear these shoes. I have a friend who wears a 5 and she can’t wear high heels – not enough foot!

    • Nicholas

She used to do ballet. Pretty sure anyone else would take a huge spill.

      • shirab

I’m guessing pointe shoes would have been easier to walk in than those.

    • Sarah

They really look like they are deforming her feet – especially in the first few pictures. It looks like her right foot is popping out the side. In other pictures they look too big. I have yet to see a pair of Casedei shoes that didn’t look beautiful yet utterly impossible to walk in.

If that was my premiere and my shoes, I would have arranged to be carried in on a litter like Cleopatra.

      • Nicholas

Why not have Henry Cavill do it?

        • Sarah

That’s the stuff my fantasies are made of! Only in the Superman get up though, not in a bad suit.

    • Amy909

eek the shoes make her feet look more like hooves in the first couple of pictures from the front! I kind of like the simplicity of the top compared to the bottom, but agree that the whole thing isn’t coming off so great in pictures|!

  • Janet B

Seriously, 4″ heels would have been enough.

I hope this looked better in person, because it’s not a flattering look in photos.

    • MoHub

Not to mention that they appear to be at least 3 sizes too big.

      • Janet B

Funny how well a borrowed dress can fit, but borrowed shoes rarely fit.

  • quiltrx

If there was ever a time for a big ol’ necklace, this was it…would have pulled focus from the bodice (which is a bit dull, obviously meant to be under the jacket).
And I can’t sign off on the headband…looks juvenile or yoga, depending on your POV. I do love the skirt of the dress, though, and her makeup looks great.

    • Patricia Biswanger

I was thinking the same thing: she needs a necklace.

  • Golfkat

I really think she could/should have pulled out all the stops for these premieres. I mean, she’s the leading lady in the new Superman movie! Now is the time to amp up the, well, anything! It’s not that she doesn’t look great, it’s just kind of underwhelming all things considered.

    • Rhonda Shore

Katy Perry should have styled her.

  • Caitlin O’Brien

Basically love everything (LOVE the hair… super cute headband), but I would agree that the bodice is pretty boring and rather low on her bust. Otherwise the look is pretty.

  • mjude

love the skirt but that top half not so much, it looks unfinished to me.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

I agree with TLo on the top/bottom thing. The bodice looks like someone cried mascara all over it, and her looks are too ‘cute button nose’ for an Alice band and a ’50s strapless. She looks great for 38, but that doesn’t mean that she needs to dress like a Disney princess.

    • zenobar

It looks like someone took a Sharpie to an undressed Barbie doll.

  • Nicholas

That top is like ankle socks for your boobs.

  • filmcricket

That bodice is shades of Gwyneth’s Oscars McQueen dress of yore – not something anyone wants to be reminded of. Her face looks great and I’m forever impressed by her ability to wear those sky-high heels – seriously, does anyone besides Chenoweth bust them out so consistently? – but that dress is a big ol’ blah.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Oh Amy! That bodice is the saddest, dingiest, too smallest, thing I’ve ever seen.

  • http://twitter.com/yessveee Sarah V.

That bodice is a mashup of running mascara and stretch marks. No.

  • NMMagpie

Amy Adams in a Kristen Stewart dress = not happening.

  • zenobar

Personally, I would have gone with a set of Wonder Woman Underoos. But that’s just me.

  • Killer Bees

The nude lining is just sooo close to her own skin color, hence it looks so… nude. It’s like peeking at boobs without nipples. Ugh, so uncomfortable to look at.

    • calbear97

Yes, thank you. I was trying to figure out why she looked so naked on top.

  • Heather

The bodice is weird because it seems like it’s transparent, but then you can’t see her nipples, so it’s visually confusing. (Not that I want to see her nipples or that she should be showing them or that I am suggesting that Amy Adams is trashy. Just visual confusion occurring.)

  • TAGinMO

She should have deployed the jacket, because that bodice looks like a tree trunk.

  • Monzerrat Ontiveros

It reminds me a lot to Tina Fey in those Golden Globes…

  • http://thishotoldbroad.blogspot.com/ Sara Leigh Merrey

It looks like she forgot to put the top on. Very strange. But I love the skirt part! Maybe she should have gone with a modified version of the jacket/blouse on the runway, maybe without sleeves. It would have made the dress look finished.

  • imspinningaround

Girlfriend, come on. You are so pretty, but a sock bun and an elastic headband? You wore to a premiere of your enormous superhero popcorn movie what the ad sales girls in my office wear to work every day. Go home, try again.

    • Mary229

The weather was horrific yesterday. I actually do understand why she wore her hair up.

  • lobsterlen

    Scroll up fug

  • twocee

    That entire ensemble is hideous.

  • Mary229

I would have liked a necklace but I actually think she’s rocking that skirt. Her skin is flawless.

It’s a shame they have had such bad weather.

  • titaness25

Also it was raining and chilly yesterday, so I shivered in commiseration at her outfit. If I ever need to walk any kind of carpet, it’s totally going to be weather appropriate. Doesn’t Valentino make coats?

  • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

I find the construction of the top fascinating. It looks like it will pull itself off any second. I think thats a row of thin elastic that gives the shape–with a bra built in? I rarely say this but I think she needs a necklace (sans earrings unless they’re small).

There is a one-inch gap between her heel and back of the shoe. I’m continually baffled at what prominent women will do to wear high high heels. That shoe can’t be comfortable, can it? Maybe the stylist brought two sizes too big?

    • lobsterlen

She is almost standing/walking on the top of her toes in those shoes. I think they all should just start wearing ballet pointe shoes and be done with it

      • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

I would love that. To be stylish these days, I have to betray my back (and my feet).

  • Cameron Turner

Totally agree….. P.S. totally in love with the shoes….

  • bertkeeter

Agree….bodice is too minimal for the skirt’s geometric design. Also the vertical crushed pleating is not exactly flaterring…giving her sort of of a chubby effect on top.

  • crash1212

This could be saved – the bodice, while odd, does fit her perfectly…which so often is not the case with such dresses. I think with a softer, messier updo, and a stronger face with maybe some sort of necklace and this would be stunning. Or, she could’ve just worn the jacket.

  • AnnaBest

I agree with everyone else–should have worn the coat, it would have been killer.

Just looking at her poor feet makes me wince–those shoes look like torture devices!

  • cowper

Boy, if there was a word for “under-cleavage,” this would be the definition.

  • Annarosa

the look in general is not so bad, but I’m yawing so hard…

  • cmb123

In the last shot of her from the side holding it looks pretty good. Apparently it’s just head on that you an really see how awful the top is. Love the shoes though

  • majorbedhead

The jacket is killer. She should have kept that. As it is, the bodice seems too low and too much like one of those hideous bandeau tops (or boob tubes, as we used to call them) from the 70s.

  • Tatiana Luján

I love the makeup and love the skirt, but the overall look is too severe for the venue.

  • stubbornthoughts

Oh man, those heels look like murder to the feet.

  • chylde

Do we like her? I think I like her. She’s a little bit different, she is. And while the top bit is weird, the bottom bit is cute as hell! She needs a little shrug or shawl.

  • MzzPants

What a sad little bodice. Should’ve kept the jacket. Or dressed like Lois Lane.

  • mhleta

I think this dress is kind of interesting, incredibly flattering and she’s got the perfect little figure for it. My gripe is, all that barren real estate between her neck and the top of dress really calls for a necklace to give a focal point. Either that, or a little jacket. Otherwise, this is a pretty successful match of dress and woman.

  • MilaXX

….and the choir said. “Amen” . The look is just too serious for a superhero movie.

  • yulaffin

I like the skirt but the top part of the dress makes her look like she has a muffin top.

  • another_laura

Needs the jacket. Or a nice necklace. Needs something interesting! Okay, def the jacket.

  • Edwina3

I like this look, if only she’d worn a necklace to offset the low bodice.

  • msdamselfly

The dress on the runway is gorgeous

  • YoungSally

At least she had the common sense to not wear a white bra a la JLD yesterday

  • Amanda Herriott Welliver

So it looks like she’s wearing chest hair…

  • shelley514

The bodice looks pornographic and cheap. Tacky tacky tacky.

  • Macunaima

    Well, I like the shoes…

  • Warrior89

    The bodice is not okay.

  • ailujailuj

yanno… there’s something about a woman’s structure that needs to guide the fashion choices – no different than the aspect-ratio of a man’s torso, length of arms and how his suit coat should fit. Amy has a beautiful decolletage – and that milky skin – but her boobies sit too close to her waist for that bodice cut. Other women have boobies too high for certain necklines. Just a few tweaks to its design is all it needs. I love the material.

  • librarygrrl64

UGH!!!!! I gasped (in horror) at that bodice. It would have looked 100% better with the sheer jacket from the runway version.

  • marlie

It’s almost like the designers used up all of their creativity on the skirt, and then threw the bodice on as an afterthought. I like her hair and makeup, and I like the skirt and shoes, but the bodice disappoints.

  • AngelaGreen

So is that how shoes are supposed to fit? With that much space? I’m really asking, I don’t know these things because I don’t know how to girl.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

There is absolutely no excuse for that bodice.

  • Tuneful54

The top is clearly an undergarment.
Paging Sue Ellen Mischke, from Seinfeld.

  • unbornfawn

Great skirt and that’s where it ends for me. The bodice was meant to be covered up. Don’t like that I can see her flesh colored strapless bra. If your are going without the jacket, you need some interest between the waist and the chin. There is a whole lot of nothing. A dramatic necklace would have helped but not saved the top half. The hair and make-up are too casual. She should have pitched a fit about those shoes. They look OK but are ridiculously big. Superman is a comic book, have a little more fun with the pole dance kids.

  • girliecue

Amy Adams and Debra Messing need to hole up in a remote cabin furnished with nothing but fashion magazines and an occasional stylist to bring them necessities until they figure out how to dress right for their body type. Bodies change, people! It’s not the worst thing in the world and you CAN learn to adjust. Heidi Klum could also join them but we know Girl is gonna do what Girl’s gonna do.

  • decormaven

The fabric and design of the bodice makes it appear as if her chest were crying. And since she has a perfectly fine chest, that’s a big ol’ design flaw. Pity, because the skirt is really cute.

  • Ummy

I hate tops that look like they are pulling the chests down instead of supporting. :( Tis a shame, because the skirt is fab.
