Zooey Deschanel in Dolce&Gabbana

Posted on May 02, 2013

We find it almost impossible to take this look on its own terms:

Zooey Deschanel attends FOX’s ‘New Girl’ Hollywood Special Screening and Q&A in a black top paired with a Dolce&Gabbana skirt and Christian Looubotin pumps.

Dolce&Gabbana Spring 2013  Multicolored Stripes Full Skirt

Because we’re just so over her pairing black tights with every skirt. Like we said the other day with Chris Pine and tweeds: after a while it becomes a costume.

Hard as it might be for us to do so, we have to admit this works pretty well. That’s a beatnik skirt if ever we saw one, which means wearing tights and a little black t-shirt with it only makes good sense, if it’s the kind of look you can pull off. But even if we accept that choice, we just can’t accept putting a look like this together and skipping jewelry altogether. No. That is a thing up with which we will not put.

But really cute skirt, right?

Cute skirt, but so over her schtick. Also, for the love of god, someone get that girl a neckbrace!

    • Rand Ortega

& “schtick” is exactly what her style has become. Buddy, Shecky & the Catskills are dead. So is Zooey’s look.

    • drdarke

      No, really…..

    • I was about to scroll down and say “What is UP with her neck!” and here you are. Amen.

      • Jessi03

I really want to buy her a Cone of Shame.

    • I’ve always called that “The Miss Mississippi contestant head tilt”

  • Karen Tully

If she’s going for the beatnik look it needs low kitten heels or flats. The pumps just don’t work with the tights.

  • The crop top just looks like her shirt is too small. I love the skirt.

  • I am unable to judge this objectively, since her pictures remind me of her voice reminds me of nails on a chalkboard and I have an admitted rush of “Ugh” to her whole ukelele-playing, quirky girl, vagely ditzy-hipster deal.

    But cute skirt, sure.

    • MissAnnieRN

I know. I hear her Cotton: The Fabric of Our Lives® song in my head, and it bugs. The way she says “cotton” in the song drives me crazy.

But yeah, her skirt is cute.

      • The whole Siri commercial- I had to resist throwing my shoe at the TV.

        • Jessi03

“Siri? Is it going to rain today?” Zoe. You are standing at the window watching it rain! What are you doing?

          • Rand Ortega

            This. Says. It. All.

        • luciaphile

All of those commercials were horrible, but yeah hers was particularly heinous.

        • gabbilevy

The @ZooeySiri Twitter account is one of my favorite parody accounts in existence.

  • MilaXX

She just can’t get it right. In this instance, I like the skirt+tights combo, mostly because she has a better shoe on with it. Hat I hate is that top. If you;re wearing tights, then a belly shirt is not the best option. Also a pair of earrings and maybe a bracelet would go a long way.

    • Right? It’s like she said… “Since I’m wearing the tights, I have to show some skin somewhere. I got it – I’ll show an inch of my stomach!”

    • zenobar

“If you’re wearing tights, then a belly shirt is not the best option.” Especially if you are me and the waistband of said tights are either a) cutting into your flesh and serving up muffin-top realness or b) approaching the band of your bra, Spanx-fashion.

    • Louise Bryan

I would like this so much better with a tucked in shirt, flats, and funky jewelry. She can wear horizontal stripes over her hips, in bright colors, no less; more power to her.

  • I’ve never seen anyone attempt to look *exactly* like the mannequin. I mean we’ve seen runway to red carpet, but this is getting out of hand. For once the needless showing of midriff isn’t making my eye twitch, but that’s probably because her permanent head tilt is.

  • SewingSiren

She and Katy Perry could be sisters .

    • drdarke

No, @SewingSiren:disqus – because sometimes I actually like Katy Perry.

I’m still trying to figure how why Zooey Deschanel has a career….

  • Jennifer Coleman

Too distracted by the strip of skin showing in the midst of all the coveredup-ness. And the skin matches the skirt field cover exactly.

    • MissAnnieRN

I read somewhere that this cropped top/exposed midriff thing is coming back on trend. NOOOO!!

      • I will not participate in this trend the second time around, either.

        • MissAnnieRN

I have a long torso, so even average cut shirts threaten to expose my midriff. I had been very much enjoying the longer cut of many shirts lately.

      • It definitely is, as I realised to my horror when going into a London high street shop and finding myself surrounded by 90s themed crop tops.

  • Deb Oswald

This seriously looks like she grabbed the shirt out of a little sister’s closet by accident. As she dressed in the dark…. I do like the skirt! and the tights. but it is snowing here, so the bottom half of her looks warm……

    • drdarke

@google-6e1bca31241e5a22a6fde56a2143cfd5:disqus – only problem is, she is the little sister, and Emily at least knows how to dress!

      And pretend(?) to be Aspie….

And deliver technobabble on cue, and smash people over the head with bedpans…..

  • The skirt is gorgeous, and I love her hair. I am not on board with the shirt or tights. Girl, I have seen your legs on New Girl. They are lovely, let them breathe.

  • NC_Meg

If she had lost the tights, I’d LOVE it full stop. Right now I love it until you get to the hem of the skirt. (And I usually just roll my eyes at Zooey posts so I feel like this is a real step forward for both of us.)

ETA: I didn’t realize that was a crop top. I recant my previous statement about loving it full stop.

  • I agree that it’s a beatnik skirt, but I don’t think bare midriff and opaque black tights go together. Black flats would have been just as beatnik without looking so heavy compared to the top, I think (I like the bare midriff deployment here, basically). Or just, some other funky little shoe in general, rather than the Loubs and black tights.
And jewelry was definitely called for. Giant earrings, a statement necklace, SOMETHING.

  • Love the skirt. The hair in a pony, with a great necklace would have killed this!

  • I’m just going to assume she has a nickel sensitivity and a skin condition on her legs. And within those parameters, I think this looks great. (I am now limited to plastic or glass jewelry and can’t tolerate earrings of any sort, so I sympathize with the condition I’ve just assigned to her.)

    • demidaemon

I don’t think she does. Because TLo showcased a look where she had forgone leggings and all the BKs were “Huzzah! So she can actually show her leg skin!”

  • Does she have some kind of endorsement deal with hosiery manufacturer?

Seriously, someone needs to stage an intervention. She’s in CALIFORNIA, and it’s MAY. I’m beginning to wonder if she doesn’t have a serious complex about her legs.

  • crash1212

Really cute skirt, and I really like the look. I must confess, I’ve been in “no jewelry” mode lately – not sure why – but because of my current bent, I am not put off by her lack of bejeweldness.

  • geans

Her head is SO HEAVY you guys.

  • She’s also clearly dressing as her character, although I imagine there is a lot of overlap.

  • zenobar

    It is an adorable skirt.

Like Zooey, I’m a fellow so-pale-she’s-see-through girl. I wonder if those tights are hiding massive, ropy varicose veins? Webs of spider veins (a condition from which I began to suffer even as a teen)? Maybe she has the dreaded black leg hair/white skin combo, which can cause the victim to look polka-dotted just an hour or two after a leg shave?

    • Yes, but she’s an actress with, one assumes, money. She could have electrolosis (sp?) to get rid of the hair problem. And spider veins are treatable, too. If nothing else, makeup on the legs would cover a multitude of problems. I think it’s just her default look, but it’s getting old. As is the head tilt all. the. bloody. time.

    • Sobaika

Many celebs wear body makeup on the red carpet (covers cuts, bruises, discoloration, etc.)

I think she just really loves tights.

      • I love tights too – I wear them all winter – but it’s May, and it’s Los Angeles, and it’s HOT out! She just looks silly. Take off the tights and put on some cute sandals with that adorable skirt, Zooey!

    • In_Stitches

She showed off her legs on New Girl in some very short shorts and she’s got some great gams. Lean thighs tapering down into a shapely knee, followed by a well turned calf. There’s no need for insecurity there (not that anyone should be insecure about showing off their legs regardless of their condition).

    • If she wants to cover her legs, she could wear sheer, neutral hose. As another poster said, it’s California, in MAY. At least try to look a little seasonally appropriate.

    • zenobar

Heh…yes, I’m well aware she’s young, lovely and richer than God, so I’m certain she has the ability to “fix” any of the issues I mentioned originally. I suppose I was secretly hoping that she had a good reason for wearing black tights all the time (I share her love of opaque tights, but I sadly pack them up and drag out the long, flowy, pasty-white-hiding skirts once the warm weather sets in).

Stars – they’re just like us!

  • Janet B

Wrong shoe, but it’s a very cute look.

    • Deb_Lynn

If only she had bare legs, and some summery wrappy wedges. And a big, ornate, chunky pendant. Obviously too much to ask.

  • Little_Olive

    The skirt is too long.

Even if you favor black tights, these are too thick. They need to be like 50 den lighter or else she looks like she has heeled feet.

    Overall, it’s TOOMUCHBLACK.

  • TheAmericaness

GOD DAMMIT! I get all done slamming D&G and then I click on this? Very cute.

My issue with the black tights and black shoes, etc. is that it reminds me of what we girls in the real world wear/wore every day growing up headed to church. It’s not what you wear to any kind of big occasion. However, I suppose if you are going to occasions all the time, maybe you slip into something more comfortable every so often.

    • For me, it’s the lazy way out, especially in the winter.

      • TheAmericaness

        That’s true.

  • hughman

“You are sixteen going on seventeen
    Baby, it’s time to think
Better beware, be canny and careful
    Baby, you’re on the brink.”

    • MoHub

But will fellows fall in line?

  • jw_ny

she really is stuck in her story, isn’t she…

  • carnush

Hello, and welcome to “Being Quirky” with Zooey Deschanel! It is a cute skirt though.

  • tereliz

Pairing opaque black tights with exposed midriff makes the baby Jesus cry. Then vomit on the Holy Ghost.

  • jennifervney

I actually love the crop top with the skirt. Her waist looks teeny. I think she could’ve lost the tights though. That’s too much black.

  • DaveUWSNYC

I kept looking at the skirt and saying…too bad the stripe’s off at the waist. It was her skin. Funny how it matches the fabric so closely.

  • “That is a thing up with which we will not put.” This English teacher applauds you.

  • I’m going to hide under my desk until this exposed 1″ strip of midriff at every event stops being a thing.

    • mhleta

Move over. I’m coming in. Are there snacks?

      • At present only two packets of instant oatmeal and some Yorkshire tea. And coughdrops. We’ll need provisions.

    • Party under @EmilyDagger’s desk! I’ll bring the chips/dip.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

The skirt is adorable and her hair and makeup are lovely. But girl, you’re barely 30. Wear opaque hose if you must cover your legs, but do something other than black, please!!

  • snarkykitten

I hate the skirt. it looks like it should be attached to a Christmas tree

  • mhleta

Damn, I love this skirt, and I love me some beatnik chic. But I cannot support this silly affectation. Learn to love your legs as they are or get yourself on a leg-toning workout routine, Miss Z. These black tights are just a big bummer. ( BTW,”That is a thing up with which we will not put.” One of you has an English teacher for a mother. My MIL says this all the time. Does that mean we’re now related by marriage?)

    • HengRu

Either that, or at least one of them is a huge “Cheers” fan, as am I. 🙂

  • nannypoo

The shirt needs to be a longer and tucked in with a belt. I don’t like the tights but they are especially wrong with the shoes. With flat shoes, a great belt and a little jewelry this could have been a really attractive outfit.

  • Yeah, but – she’s 33. Time to stop dressing like she’s 13.

  • decormaven

Let the mannequin wear the skirt. It’s doing a better job.

  • MK03

I am so fucking done with her.

  • Tatiana Luján

If the look is beatnik, instead of just “I pair black tights with everything”, the shoes don’t go.

  • I don’t know when this was taken, but if it’s within the last few days in Los Angeles, the temp here has been hovering around 80-95 for the last few days (Banning is on *fire* for goodness sake!), and this just looks…sweaty, and way to wintery for May.

  • In_Stitches

When you wear black tights with a skirt and a black top, if just looks like you’re wearing a black bodysuit with a skirt over it. Would’ve loved this without the tights or with a different top; maybe a white oxford or something similarly clean and simple. The lack of jewelry doesn’t bother me; the looks is too casual for cuff, the neckline doesn’t accommodate a necklace and earrings would just get lost in all that hair.

  • Pants_are_a_must

She could not look less like she’d want to be there. It’s a cute look, but on her it’s so overdone it’s brisket at this point.

  • LOOOOVE the skirt. I’m over the sliver of midriff showing, though. And I would NOT have paired the black tights.

  • Qitkat

Ha ha ha ha! she decided to look just like the mannequin.

  • Imasewsure

Cute skirt but can’t with the summer crop top and the winter legs

  • I like this look, well, maybe not the styling although I want both the skirt and top. What I don’t like is how strained and uncomfortable she looks. I’ve noticed with the TLo posts that I’m always inclined to go easier on the people who look relaxed and happy. Poor Zooey looks neither.

  • teensmom99

    Spot on, dear uncles!

  • luciaphile

Her hair looks decent and her makeup looks less pancakey than usual. The skirt is cute and I don’t even mind the tights. And I refuse to criticize her for wearing weather in appropriate attire. All winter long there were shots of models and actresses sporting open toed shoes and sandals in places like NYC and London. If we’re not going to criticize them, I can’t criticize someone for going with tights in May.

The belly shirt, however, is problematic. Also, she needs to stand up straight. Enough with the broken doll pose. She’s in her 30s not her teens.

  • Eric Stott

I don’t like the strip of belly showing. If that top were longer it would be just fine, if a bit safe.

  • Mark Clark

Almost a more succesful 21st century Midge from Mad Men? Hopefully without the heroin addiction…

  • buildmeatower

I don’t even care about the tights. I just want her to straighten her neck and get her hands off her hips. It’s not cute, it’s annoying. (Full disclosure: Zooey has the top spot on my irrational hatred list, so I am also utterly incapable of being impartial.)

  • I’ve moved from irrational hatred of her to complete indifference (which, of course, is so much worse), but aside from that I agree that a necklace (chunky, boho) would help immensely.

  • I choose to believe you spelt it Loouboutin out of mockery.

  • pop_top

I’m not mad at her for trying to look like the mannequin, but she should have went with longer sleeves and gloves.

  • Love the skirt, but FFS that woman is just too precious for my tastes. Also, I think it’d look better with a full length shirt tucked in and lose the tights, add jewelry.

  • CommentsByKatie

I know I am in a pretty small minority here, but this look is pretty much my life uniform (fitted black blouse, black nylons, black shoes, and a pretty skirt.) So naturally I love this (although I would have the good sense to wear a necklace and a ring.)

  • mrspeel2

Now that’s an outfit I would’ve worn 3 days in a row, during my Beatnik days! *But the skirt would have had to be drab grey-brown where the green is on her’s!*
    She looks adorable!!

  • How do we know those aren’t the mannequin legs? Same color.

  • demidaemon

Even she looks kind of over it, no? “Man, I’m so twee I’ve finally out-tweed myself. Ugh, everyone was right.”

  • pookiesmom

I think she looks cute and I love her.

  • ccm800

    adorable.Love her

  • H2olovngrl

    Perfect for her. Very cute.

  • I really like the outfit, except for the lack of jewellery (c’mon, at least a necklace) and those tights. I am a fellow all-seasons tights wearer, but even I break out the thin coloured tights when the weather’s nice. Look into thin, coloured tights. It will change your world, and will still be hipster-Zooey appropriate.

  • gracedarling

I could pay ‘beatnik’ if she were wearing a leotard and flats. As it is, the proportions are just off – and the good-girl hair and cocked head are gratingly incongruous.

The skirt is gorgeous, though. Couldn’t love D&G more.

  • Candigirl1968

At least this fits her well.

  • Love the Winston Churchill reference!

  • This isn’t entirely her fault, but I am realizing that I just can’t handle twee unless it is actually on the twee. Granted, I love the skirt, but she and Taylor Swift default to versions of this look and I just find it more and more style-less. I think it was cute and throwback 10ish years ago.

  • Pterodactyl111

Maybe she slept on it funny.

  • Claudia

Its so weird that she’s always covering up her legs in what I can only assume is shame. She rocks her legs out in New Girl. Is it a makeup/lighting/ camera angle thing?

  • She knows what she likes to wear, she should wear it!

  • ItsDicey

  • kathrineb

It’s OK but I HATE those shoes with it.

  • Ugh… she looks well. I still hate her maniac pixie dream girl shtick though.

  • librarygrrl64

Some chunky beads in either a necklace or a bracelet would have looked great. And, if she’s going for beatnik, flats would have been better than heels.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Of course. (It had to be said)
