Zoe Saldana in Vionnet

Posted on May 03, 2013

Part of the reason we have declared today Sausage Friday is because frankly, we can’t bear to look at one more starlet in a black dress, a white dress, or a black and white dress. We are so very over this stylist-driven micro-trend, darlings.

With one exception:

Zoe Saldana attends the UK Premiere of ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ in London in a Vionnet dress paired with Christian Louboutin shoes and clutch, and Tiffany and Co. jewelry.

Vionnet Pre-Fall 2013 Collection

It’s an interesting B&W; you have to give it that.

We’re on the side of loving this look for her. It suits her really well; so much so that she’s probably one of only a few ladies who could really pull this dress off. And she’s clearly showing up at the Star Trek premieres in outfits that look like Star Trek costumes. We can’t not love that a little. But yes, the shape is weird and it’s not what we would call flattering. It is, however, striking, and that’s totally her side of the street.

In conclusion:

Weird dress + Striking Gal+ Appropriate Venue = WIN.

It seems to me it is flattering from the back, and interesting from any angle. I really like it as a red carpet dress. Much better than the Balmain cooch curtain.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

As you guys always say, it’s about the dress but also about WHO is wearing it, and WHERE they’re wearing it. So if this were worn by, say, a Fanning sister or a Mara sister or pretty much any other actress-not-named-Cate, this would be absurd. But on Zoe, at a Star Trek premiere, it works. It may not WERQ, but it works.

  • AndresB

Absolutely, favorite uncles. It’s an interesting design which is hard to proportion correctly (which the designer did) and hard to pull off (which Zoe does).
While Zoe’s attitude defines ‘striking’ in the best sense, the model’s lack of attitude just defines ‘clueless’.

    • Sara L.

Yup, “striking” is the exact word for the figure Zoe cuts in this dress.

    • Sarah

The model’s styling is also extremely misguided. The boot, it does not go.

  • BeeBeauNYC

I love the 50s glam hair. I agree it works with her. She can pull off looks that most mere mortals cannot.

  • It looks spectacular in motion, with all the obvious wind at the venue. Hanging flat? not so much. But Zoe clearly has the presence to carry such things off with aplomb.

    • Beardslee

She looks amazing but I wonder what it is like to walk in. With those tippety shoes and those hanging panels, it could get all wrapped around her legs in clumsy ways. And if she can’t walk in it well, that really downgrades it for me.

      • It appears to be doing exactly what you describe.

      • misstressofsylar

i was watching the broadcast of the premiere and she tripped several times. Benedict and Zachary had to help her out. more reasons to hate the bitch. but i kid as she’s certainly my fence-jumper

    • Pterodactyl111

Yeah, the wind really helps the look. She lucked out there.

  • Jessi03

YES! I imagine that every road in La Saldana’s life is a catwalk. She is fabulous.

    • La Saldana sounds like a fantastic wine bar that I should be sitting at right now.

  • I think it’s gorgeous, and the first pictures I saw of it were ones where all of her co-stars were required to help her get the white panels under control after a wind-attack. So it’s not only a lovely, interesting dress, it inspires solidarity.

  • princessricky

you gotta hand it to saldana. bitch works it better than the model, no matter how cray it is.

  • She is giving SERIOUS diva (fine, bitch) face.

  • denas silberstein

hate it on the model. she transforms it.

  • C. C. Winslow

    That’s some fierce ish.

  • Scimommy

Such is the power of her fierceness that she can wear a burlap sack, and I’ll give her a WERQ.

I see you guys are building up to Cumberbatch.

    • Beardslee

      Let’s hope!

  • thecitysleeps

This is perfection to my eyes.

  • toilet paper dress hem, no?

  • I love this on her and at this event. Even the carwash skirt doesn’t bother me! I think she looks beautiful.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

Carwash skirt. That made my day.

  • Hell yeah appropriate venue. I think this dress is giving her the power to control the wind. Her face in the 6th photo (from the back) says ” Get into this wind action, I know you see it”.

  • Lilyana_F

She sure is making it work. *snaps*

  • It’s a WERQ for me.
Maybe the dress has some flaws, but the whole look it’s not JUST the dress. And everything works.

    • homofascist

This is a WERQ for me too. Those shots of her from the back are stunning. As bizarre and the billowing skirt is, she looks fierce.

  • Janet B

A dress made for movement. Otherwise the skirt is just ridiculous.

  • If it were more fitted, this would have been a WERQ. It just looks sloppy as is. From the neck up though, she looks great.

  • ellabob

    Styled perfectly – definite win…

  • I really loved the runway/model look with the boots–that’s what made me say “oooh pretty dress!” looks great on Zoe, too though

  • jackxx

an odd dress, but I think she looks absolutely striking, however I am not digging the eye makeup…

  • Interesting. Normally I would hate this dress for being over-designed and tricky, but in this venue, on this woman, it’s really working! Guess that’s why fashion is so much fun – you just never know when you are going to be surprised by something that is unexpectedly beautiful.

  • crash1212

    Total WIN.

  • And she’s totally working the wind & her angles!

  • Chaiaiai

Bitch is working it like she brought her own damn wind machine. Respect.

  • Cathy S

I love it, especially with the wind blowing it around like that. She looks fabulous.

  • Carol

She is quite striking, but that dress is a mess.

  • MoHub

Sorry. Looks as if it was a more usual dress, and someone attacked it with a razor blade.

  • SewingSiren

I love Madeline Vionnet. She was a truly great designer that was far ahead of her times in many, many ways. She was know for her robes à mouchoirs (handkerchief hems). this one looks awkward to me. Too bad, back to the drawing board.

  • 3boysful

LOVE. The dress, tho . . . different . . . looks expensive. And I appreciate that in lieu of the storm trooper thigh highs on the model, she deployed Louboutins whose peep-toes echo the dress.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • Qitkat

My word, this woman is FABULOUS!
I like to think that the design on her bodice is a twinkling group of Starships in formation.

  • MilaXX

This is the Zoe I love. This is a dress not many could wear, but with the hair & makeup she is making this work.

  • guest2visits

Definitely an interesting dress, but I think it would be tons more elegant if it were all black. The white is slightly bed-sheet looking. Of course, Zoe is making it work nicely, regardless.

  • mellorcr

Oddly enough, though this dress IS perfect for a Star Trek premiere, it’s actually a slightly modified version of a fairly common Parisian-style 20’s dress. The weight of the fabrics and proportion of the handkerchief hem have been changed to make it more modern, but if the skirt had been made in a flowing fabric it could have been used on-screen for Great Gatsby.

  • TheAmericaness

  • stubbornthoughts

Totally agree. Plus, she’s working the ever-living shit out of it.

  • She looks rather wonderful!

  • formerlyAnon

I was worried for a moment you were going to come down negative on this.

I think it – and she, because it’s mostly because she’s the one wearing it – is FAB. She totally overcomes the gratuitously-trying-to-be-“interesting” skirt.

  • SRQkitten

This is definitely a dress that the ferocious Ms. Saldana can pull off like few others! Tres impressive!

  • Imasewsure

Ms Z and her wind machine have made this odd dress pretty awesome… shouldn’t work but it does. PROPS

  • Love.

  • jw_ny

I’d totally hate this on anyone else, but Zoe is making that gown sing…like the designer couldn’t have probably even imagined.

That is some serious Hollywood movie star hair, face, and attitude she’s serving too. She really gets how this is done.

  • ralish

She is so regal. Love the swirl of white at the bottom.

  • Looks to me like they knew it was going to be windy and picked a dress to take advantage of that. I actually really like it, and Zoe is one of the few people who can bring the confidence this dress needs to be accessorized with.

  • ashtangajunkie

I absolutely love this look. Perfect for her – she looks amazing.

  • I think this is a WERQ. Really amazing and striking on Zoe!

  • carnush

    Stunning. Way to pose!

  • And she’s giving ‘tude and face like she’s dueling January Jones!

  • YoungSally

It’s very pretty — but in photo one I suddenly heard an old tune in my head —

    “Workin’ at the Car Wash”

  • unbornfawn

That dress certainly grabs your attention. Is it just me, or is she starting to wear a hard-ass Jada Pinkett-Smith type expression these days?

  • sleepycat

    i love this dress! Sickening

  • Monabel

“One of only a few” oh, Thank You, Thank You! So tired of “one of the only.”

  • capybara_cafe

I actually just said “WOOOOOOOOW” as I scrolled down and saw the whole thing. She is stunning. I can’t think of anyone else that could pull off this weird ass dress, but she looks fabulous.

  • leave_Blake_alone

I LOVE this – at least right now, on her, with the wind blowing at this red carpet. Perfect.

  • jetpackdino

I love the drama of this dress, this moment, and Zoe.

  • Carly Warnock

    Fierce as fuck.

  • A bit strange but she’s workin’ it. The more I look at the dress, the more I like it. Why are all of these movies premiering in foreign markets before opening here? Is that a new thing or haven’t I been paying attention?

    • demidaemon

No, it isn’t a new thing. My guess is that because international markets are less saturated with advertising for these movies, the premieres are basically a big publicity stunt. But that’s just my supposition.

  • Also, hair worthy of the Gatsby guest list! Loving this.

  • bellafigura1

Wow, you guys are a tough crowd. This is true couture and absolutely spectacular! I like it with the boots, too, although she made the right shoe choice for her venue. Many snaps.

  • SpillinTea

This is how you serve FACE and BODY, celeb ladies. Even if the dress is a little awkward, you will still get YASSSSSS’s from the queens if you give us that attitude we need. YASSSS Ms Zoe!

  • H2olovngrl

Look who brought her wind machine…! She is serving up the fierce!

  • maggiemaybe

Hair and makeup are flawless. I think the dress is kind of silly, though, in a “I just razored up my bed sheet” kind of way.

  • Colin

The shape is totally flattering I think. The upper silhouette is straight is taking the attention from the upper half, but showing her legs, which are goddamn hot here. If the makeup didn’t do odd things to her eyes, this look would be perfect.

  • quiltrx

Agree with everything you said…plus I have to say I love the Gatsby-ish hair, and she is working the shit out of that dress, which always helps!

  • Anniebet

If I hadn’t seen umpteen photos elsewhere of Zoe’s cast mates helping her corral the flappy tails of this dress as they blew merrily in the wind I might like it more. It was pretty much slapstick comedy.

She’s gorgeous, but apparently Nature had its way with her, which we don’t see here.

  • kathrineb

  • Elleachaudaucul

She is a goddess. How is this anything other than a WERQ?

  • Out! Hate it!

  • Sunraya

Gorgeous! And she is sure working it!

  • drdarke

Exactly, @eowyn_of_rohan:disqus ! Anybody else in any other context, this dress would be a disaster in the making – but on Zoe Saldana, at a STAR TREK premiere, it’s beautiful. Better, she’s giving just the proper amount of bitchface – enough that you feel she’s laying it on for a lark, not that it’s her (unlike January Jones!).

I’d go so far as to say she makes it WERQ – but I think I’m a bit more forgiving of a goddess who knows how to dress….

  • KatrinaAtienza

  • It’s kind of ostrich-y, but I don’t say that like it’s a bad thing.

  • librarygrrl64

I’m not crazy about it, but she looks great. This would have been an excellent choice for the Gatsby premiere. A modern nod to the late 20s/early 30s.

  • And she has the Tyra trick of having her own wind machine! FAB!

  • i love you guys. and i really love zoe saldana, almost to the point of she can do no wrong… so… of course i love this. and of course, the shoes are perfect and it’s a great look, etc. etc. but i want her to be STUNNING in whatever she’s wearing. is it a new stylist she needs?
