Yea or Nay: Givenchy Fall 2013 Boots

Posted on May 13, 2013

We’re bored. It’s Monday. Let’s eat carbs and talk boots.

Givenchy Fall 2013 Collection

Y’know, we wanted to play Pretend Stylist, where we urge everyone to shout out the name of the first celebrity they think of when they look at each boot, but let’s face it; every response would be “J LO! J LO! J LO! J LO! J LO! J LO!” Girl does tend to go like a good snake theme, after all.

But our question is simpler than that, and will hopefully yield a slightly wider range of responses.

Clearly they’re a car and driver shoe – no one can walk any distance in those curved heels….

  • jamie2348

Love Givenchy and the snakeskin but sick of the curved in heel

    • Introspective

thats my problem with all of these. that heel was dramatic and different when mcqueen did it ages ago. now it feels derivative, impractical, and dare i say it, fug.

      let’s move on fashion people.

  • shirab

Can a heel of that shape actually hold up a person? Have any BKs experimented with this particular form?

    • Sara L.

Yes, I second the request, does anybody have any experience here? All I can see is someone falling flat on their ass when they hit it wrong.

      • ampg

I haven’t walked in them, but I actually suspect they’d be pretty stable. The heel of the boot strikes the ground directly under the center of the wearer’s heel, which is supposed to be the most supportive design.

  • gabbilevy

Love these… on somebody else. That’s not a good height boot for me (higher or lower, but these mid-shin models give me the stumpleg.)

  • GorgeousThings

    Hideous, heinous, and unwalkable.

  • YAY! Love these. The colors are great and I love the texture!

  • clatie

I guess I like the color schemes but the height on the calf is so odd to me – not short but not long. The curved heel looks so claw-like. Don’t like.

  • Yea/YAY I would wear them in my dreams where there are no blisters or twisted ankles and fashion is synonymous with comfort

  • VioletFem

Nay. Not a fan or snake print. Plus the weird color combo is not pretty.

  • blueberrypanckae

That heel gives me agita! can it support an actual human?

  • Janet B

Nay, but I’m sure there are a few celebrities who’ll prove me wrong.
The height looks awkward and the heel looks dangerous.

  • Anathema_Device

Yea. They are high-impact and really fun. Of course, wouldn’t work on just anyone, but I like them. If I could wear heels with any regularity and could afford these, I’d choose the red ones.

  • Nope. Ugly and boring, which I didn’t think was possible, and that heel gives me a back ache just looking at it.

  • bailey debruynkops

YEA. love the fuchsia & purple striped pair.

  • FUGLY.

  • mhleta

NAY. Love the patterns, but I hate the heel! Why fork out this much money for a boot that screams out “NOW” now, but will scream “So last year” in less than a year just because of this wonky heel? If they’d make this with a classic heel, (ooo, like a low Roper or riding boot?) they’d be worth the investment. As it is, too ephemeral.

  • Ceur

In the very moment I read the beginning of your post I was stuffing my face with an embarrasing amount of spaghetti. It suddenly felt extremely appropriate. And: hell nay. But some of the prints could work for cute leather flats.

  • TheAmericaness

Yay if worn in the right place by the right person. Nay if not.

Basically means I feel neutral about them. So I’m Switzerland here and am totally willing to reap any profits – is that a bad joke?

    • demidaemon

      Not at all.

  • Lattis

The horizontal stripe of these boots would make my short little legs look like dock pilings.

  • mightbewrong

I feel like if I see them on someone they might be alright. Or maybe they really are that ugly.

  • Nay. I really hate the shape of the heels, they look like they are buckling under the person’s weight which is NOT a good look.

  • rumcg66

NAY. I really don’t like the way that curved heel looks; it changes the shape of the foot in a weird and unflattering way. They look like weird alien feet or something. Ew.

  • Missy Covington

I’m slightly less bored b/c I’m watching the live-streaming coverage of the MN Senate debating/voting on marriage equality…

But I digress. Irritated by the curved heel. I would think I would be in constant danger of falling backward b/c my heel strike isn’t where it’s supposed to be anymore.

  • MilaXX

YAY for celebs, NAY for us normal folks, I also see Rhi RHi, Eve and MJB and maaaaybe Solange wearing these.

  • alyce1213

I absolutely love the colors and patterns, but not the heel. Very much over that curved heel.

  • Vanja

Nay, hate the shape of the heel.

  • YAY

  • I hate hate hate that the stripes don’t match up from the heel to the body of the boot.

    • alyce1213

I know! At $2-3K a pop (I’m guessing), those stripes really should match up. It certainly looks possible – they came so close.

      • Having worked with snake skin, it certainly should be possible. I can only conclude its deliberate.

    • StellaZafella

      High-Heeled Snake Socks.

  • NC_Meg

I like the purple pair but only because I think that is a gorgeous color. I don’t like the snake skin (makes my skin crawl) and the other colors are hideous. I kind of like the curved heel although I do wonder how practical it is.

  • notoffred

    Yea! I want a pair.

  • Love the color of the red ones, the rest are too much for me. As for the heel shape—interesting to look at, but probably a nightmare to walk in.

  • LordZoe

that height of boot is so unflattering that they used it in almost every single pond wardrobe to make her legs less modelly. it is the stumpifier.

  • Carrieanno

    Nay. Ick.

  • Nay. I like the colors, but the rest is wonky.

  • HOT! But give em to me in a wedge heel, otherwise I’m likely to end up in traction.

  • I want every single one. From the side. From the front, on the model, they look like goofy socks.

  • NAY I hate these. Also, JLo and Rihanna are the only ladystars who could pretend to pull these off.

  • Nay. I would love pretty much all of those prints in a pump, though.

  • As much as a dislike the actual designs (unless you are costuming as a snake), it bothers me more that the stripes aren’t quite lined up from heel to boot,

  • Absolutely, NAY. Weird, unflattering, and probably much too damn expensive too.

  • RebeccaKW

No. That heel is just…odd-looking and uncomfortable looking. It’s got to throw your balance off.

    • mmc2315

I stared at them, and decided the heel makes them look too hoofy. Or something. Not for a human foot.

      • RebeccaKW

        Kind of like a talon.

  • SewingSiren

    Ticky tacky toe.

  • YEA! I love all of these. They remind me of molas (Colombian/Panamanian indigenous textile artwork) but not in an appropriative way. I would wear ALL of these. Not coincidentally, I have a pair of boots made from molas that I got at a craft fair in Colombia (which are falling apart from too much wear, so I need to take them to get repaired). WAAAANT THEEEESE SOOOO BAAAAD.

  • Sally Brownson

They’re kind of an awkward height on the calf, no?

  • PrunellaV

I can’t sign off on heels that look like mandibles.

  • Little_Olive

I actually think these are too demure for JLo. Well, at least for an official appearance. In a fake-non-paparazzi-errand-running day, yes. I see January Jones, Kim K, maybe even Anne Hathaway in them.

Grading them on a curve of the shoestupidity we’ve been seeing, I’ma give them a pass, curved heel and all.

  • The way the stripes are *almost* but not quite matching from shaft to heel is making me twitch (especially with the high contrast colors). Georgina Chapman would NOT approve.

  • Definitely see the Kardashians wearing these, plus Gwen, Nicki and Gaga.

  • carnush

    Um, no.

  • Cynica

Like Bobby Draper, I get twitchy when patterns don’t line up exactly. Except for the red, I’d have to say nay.

  • offensively ugly is what comes to mind.

  • Ugh. No.

  • watchmeboogie

    Euuu, nay nein no.

  • Jangle57

Perhaps I’m a bad person to ask as someone ‘blessed’ with wide feet AND wide calves, there’s no way I would ever be able to wear these, but I assure it is not sour grapes when I say how glad I am that I will never be able to wear these.

  • That is a terribly unflattering shaft height so I say NAY.

  • crash1212

NAY! I had such a visceral negative response to these…it kind of surprised me. I even leaned away from the screen as if the ugly would jump out at me. >

Love em in the purple and the red.

  • BrooklynBomber

Nay. They look good on the model but won’t look good on mortal women. Plus the curved heel. Plus snakeskin. Ecch.

  • Lori

These are perfect for someone who has always wanted to live in a Tim Burton movie. That’s not me, so I’ll pass. Which I guess is a NAY.

  • The colors are fantastic, but that heel is deadly. Nay.

  • Nope nope nope. I’m really tired of the absolutely impractical curved heel on shoes that don’t call for it structurally. It feels like they’re the hot new thing and it’s old.

  • Daisy Walker

    Hell to the nay.

  • Isabel

No – If you give them to me, I will go to a store to return them and get some pretty shoes. These are not pretty.

  • Sara__B

I like the side views in the pictures but not the front view on the model. NAY.

  • 1) They actually look like booties to me. The height is weird.
    2) I’d be afraid to walk on those heels, not only they are curved but they are really pointy.

  • OrigamiRose

    NAY. Just hideous.

  • Claudia Fernandes

    No wAY

  • Louise Bryan

Nay. They are neither practical nor pretty. They hit at an unfortunate spot on the leg. And they are ankle breakers to boot (pun intended? Yea or Nay).

  • I love them. Yea.

  • jennifervney

Yea! While the heel is kind of cray, I love me some snakeskin and thank the fashion gods they are neither nude nor stripper platforms!!

  • Rrroza

Love the two-color-combo schemes, but overall Nay for all the reasons previous BKs have mentioned.

Also bugs me that the stripes on the heels don’t match up with the body of the shoes. The only one that works is the yellow-and-green pair. And the last pair isnt too objectionable. But the ones with the larger stripe motif, the joins are just awkward and look cheap.

  • maggiemaybe

The heels on those boots are aggressively ugly.

  • mjude

  • NYCGlamourpuss

See, I loved them at first, TLo, but then you had to go and mention JLo, and now I’m all cranky. (*Harumpfh!*)

  • snarkykitten

    clown boots

  • JuliaInBlack

I like the colors and the pattern, and even the height is okay. The heel just squicks me out badly – I can’t explain why, exactly, but it’s a serious gut reaction so I guess that ends up as NAY.

  • I miss pretend stylist! Can we play soon?

  • ringthing

I feel crabby today so NAY. They look so crazy with that heel.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I said ‘Yea’ until you said, “JLO!” But horrible celebs aside, these are seriously gorgeous and chic boots.

  • The only place i would wear these is to be burned at the stake. Fugly.

  • It looks like those animals whose knees bend backwards. So nay.

  • LC3203

  • It looks like the shoe is humping the foot. Nay.

  • Yay to the red one, NAY to the whole look overall.

  • Kirsten Kirsten

Gorgeous colours and textures, but those heels are vicious and cruel – ankle fractures waiting to happen.

    • Pennymac

Fractured my ankle October 2012, wearing SNEAKERS for God’s sake. I say, ace wrap those bitches inside the boots and go for it.

  • formerlyAnon

What does the curved heel feel like when you walk? If it’s stable, I say Yea, though the burgundy one (#3) is the only one I’d wear. But I’m fairly klutzy, so I’m dubious.

    • conniemd

yeah, love the burgundy one. Striped snakeskin is too hooker cray for me. Nay.

  • E. D.

This height boot doesn’t work for 95% of people – therefore, OUT.

  • guest2visits

I like the shape of this boot with it’s curved in heel, but I think the horizontal strips of leather make them look very much like a pair of striped socks from the front view. Nicer looking from the sides. Loud and Diva. JLo. Madonna… Gwen S, Florence W? There is something reggae about them.

  • Crystal

    • Crystal

I’m sorry, I have been craving pizza for two weeks and beating down that craving with long distance running. I am full of feelings right now lol

  • Contralto

    NAY. I hate those heels.

  • Weazley

I’m YEA, but my OCD is going crazy that the stripes don’t line up!

  • Imasewsure

Yeah only because Gwen Stefani would rock the crap out of them with a Gap T and a pair of ripped jeans

  • ankali

NAY for me — I don’t love the colors or the stripes — but I can see someone else rocking them.

  • diane0909

The Packers fan in me is loving the green & yellow version!

  • Awkward place to hit your calf- not slimming- and I’ve seem some gnarly thicker ankled ladies get screwed over by boots like this… also- they’re FUGLY

  • Nay!

  • LaSylphide

Personally I don’t like them, but on the right legs, with the right outfit, they’d probably look good. Qualified Yea.

  • DocLynn

Only if you have a podiatrist on speed dial… Plus that length boot only works on model-length legs. Makes the rest of us look stumpy.

  • lalahartma

  • The stripe of the heel should be lined up with the stripe of the main shoe.

Finding something to wear with the boots is a challenge. I don’t like them with the runway outfit.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

I fucking love those boots. It is totally weird that the stripes don’t match up, but I love the colors and texture. I want them, with much shorter heels. Since I would never possibly be able to walk in those, I vote for Madonna to wear them.

  • Emmyllou

Love the skins, the color blendings, but deeply dislike the shape & heel.

  • l_c_ann

Out, because these are going to inspire really butt ugly rip offs.

  • librarygrrl64

    Nay. Not my thing.
