WERQ: Queen Latifah in Carmen Marc Valvo

Posted on May 10, 2013

Isn’t it kind of funny how, upon viewing the smoking wreckage of the Met Gala red carpet, we naively declared that we were totally sick of gowns and we didn’t want to see them anymore? To quote Cher the Lesser, “AS IF.”

Besides, this merited some observation:

Queen Latifah attends New York City Ballet’s Spring 2013 Gala in a Carmen Marc Valvo sleeveless peplum gown.

Carmen Marc Valvo Sleeveless Peplum Gown

Hands to JESUS.  She is serving up PERFECTION in hair, makeup, and jewelry. She nailed all three. Not that she didn’t nail the dress, which also looks spectacular on her, but we’re not in love with the sequined dishtowels tucked into her waist; that odd little half-peplum thing. Still, that’s such a minor complaint when you’re looking at a lady who looks this good. She is WERQing that old-school Diva look like the lights just came on in the club and Mama’s not planning on a cold mattress that night. Circle-of-GIVING-US-LIFE snaps, girl.

Stunning. Would have been perfect without the peplum, but you don’t really notice when the rest of the look is so gorgeous. The hair and makeup are fantastic.

    • I didn’t even see the peplum on Her Majesty until I noticed them on the model and had to scroll up.

      • e jerry powell

I didn’t notice it at all until I saw the word “peplum.”

  • lehen

seriously, she looks better in that dress than the model.

    • dashransome

      My thoughts as well!

    • Introspective

Because she is a BOSS on the RC. Her gays have been nailing it since her breakout role in Chicago. And Im not mad at them.

      Keep up the perfection Queen.

      • And I LOVE how off the carpet she is all basketball shorts and giant t’s. She is the most unglam person. But when it’s time to go to work, lady is a boss and shows them all how it’s done.

        • I am a fat woman, and my arms are disproportionately fat even given the rest of me. When I got married, I insisted on having my wedding dress be sleeveless, because sleeves often bind on me and restrict my movement. The dressmaker was like “. . . are you sure?” and I said “Look, I have arms like hams, this is obvious. But if you put a ham in a sleeve, it just becomes a ham in a sleeve. Ain’t no sleeves out there that are going to make my arms look skinny.”

          • yes! i love that attitude. the other day i was looking for a cover up for my arms, late to work, and then i thought, who cares????

          • demidaemon

      • MilaXX

Pfft, she’s be nailing it since U.N.I.T.Y.
The queen has always been the bawse.

  • I think she is a woman who regularly nails it on the RC. She really knows how to show off her gorgeousness.

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a heavy lady workin’ it (said the heavy lady). Nicely done, Your Highness.

    • RebeccaKW

She is proof that a lady above a single-digit size does not need to wear a shapeless sack and can show off her arms. She is gorgeous and sexy and I love her.

      • She’s just about always brought it. LOVE.

  • And that is an unexpected and totally BADASS color on her. Props!

    • Pannyx

Hmmm… I agree it is a great color from her but unexpected? I seem to remember her wearing lots of metallic blues/purples.

  • bxbourgie

Beautiful! The little peplum-ettes I can do without, but the overall look is STUNNING! Long Love The Queen!

  • MilaXX

DA-YUM! That face is beat! The peplum just looks unnecessary on both her and the model, but overall the queen looks GOOD!

  • Diego!

Amazing! I really really like her very much. WERQ!

  • Just goes to show you can look great even if you aren’t a size 2.

  • Stunning! I would not have thought to use that graphite color on her and that would be my loss.

I want to see someone tell the Queen her arms are “too fat” for a sleeveless dress. There would be blood on the walls by morning.

    • MilaXX

I don’t think it would take that long.

      • True! It’s a family quote…which should tell you something about my family. And I have no idea of where it came from.

        • Your family sounds like they’d be a hoot. 😉

      • formerlyAnon

And really, what blood? I bet she could freeze any uppity stylist into the outer reaches of Antarctica with a silent look. Because she’s not just lovely, she’s *regal,* and her gaze has that kind of power.

  • I don’t mind the peplum in this instance. That is a very nicely-packed dress! And the fit around her arms makes my heart sing.

  • Fantastic dresses look good in all shapes of bodies. Take note, designers!!

    • This. The model looks pretty, but Queen Latifah looks STUNNING.

  • jw_ny

  • newleaf1

Okay, I’m going to sound like my mom here – but the prettiest thing about this lady is her smile. She is just such a knockout, and the dress only adds to her look.

    • And it seems like she’s a pretty cool person, which adds to her attractiveness.

  • clairellis

You don’t even notice the dish rags bc she looks so good.

  • zenobar

Does this woman ever age?! Snaps of RESPECT, my Queen.

  • makeityourself

Now THAT is how one wears blue nail polish. And THAT is how one wears a gorgeous bejeweled earring. Note the perfect employment of multiple bracelets. Seriously, every detail is perfection.

  • SewingSiren

She always looks good in the Norman Norell type sequin mermaid sheath. The peplum detail doesn’t bug me.All the accessories are spot on.

  • The Queen has made the Peplum WERQ. Bow down.

  • Rand Ortega

    ON. POINT!

  • Sally Brownson

Does Queen Latifah ever go out looking less than stunning? If she has, I’ve forgotten it. Snaps up!

  • GorgeousThings

At first I hated the peplum (on general principle), but seeing the side view makes it not as bad. I think the dress would look better without it, though I wonder if it would then fall into the generic mermaid dress look?

  • ashtangajunkie

She’s just all beautiful, all the time. WERQ indeed.

  • PastryGoddess

    Black don’t crack…ya heard

  • Aurumgirl

Latifah is one of the most beautiful women, ever. And she always looks magnificent when she’s dressed for the red carpet.

  • twocee

Gorgeous. Agree about the half-peplum but at least it’s not prominent enough to distract from the overall stunningness (is that a word??) of the look.

  • filmcricket

Minor quibbles: the peplum, the manicure, the white pedicure/shoe combo. But overall she looks utterly stunning. All hail the queen!

  • You two are absolutely fabulous human beings! My social network feeds have blown up in the past couple of days because of the Abercrombie & Fitch CEO’s comments about how he only sells to the cool and popular kids…you know, under size 10. It’s attitudes like that which lead young girls into eating disorders, depression and even suicide.

Having two well known, wonderful, bitchy fashion bloggers give a Werq to a fabulously beautiful, plus sized woman is a great affirmation for all of those young girls who dream about the glamour world.

    • The A&F CEO is a scumbag. His company is one that also advertises their clothing by using semi-clad adolescent-looking models.

      • TheAmericaness

That’s my main issue as well with American Apparel. They SAY they are over 18.. ok. The fact that they want them LOOKING under 18 (more close to 14) bothers the absolute crap out of me. It’s beyond creepy if you ask me.

    • julnyes

hilarious considering he looks like a creepy albino troll.

  • All Hail the Queen! She looks amazing.

  • elleg929

Absolutely beautiful. I did not realize there was a peplum until I saw the model picture. All I could see at first was her radiant smile. Gorgeous!

  • d4divine

Love…except for the side fish gills.

  • M. H. Leader

    Abso-freaking-GORGEOUS. She’s fall-over beautiful.

  • tereliz

Agree on the hip fins, but dayum, she looks amazing. Love the hair.

  • formerlyAnon

She almost always nails it. Has never rested on the laurels of her natural prettiness, doesn’t matter where her fluctuating weight is, even the subtleties of various venues rarely defeat her (and her team.)

  • This woman is so REGAL!!! I just love her style and confidence. WERQ indeed!!!

  • Chaiaiai

LOVE the unexpected pop ‘o color on her nails. Royal blue for her lesser subjects!

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

As a gal who is her size, I too was at first put off by the peplumish thing. But I think that in a way, it draws the eye OUT and away from the tummy area. So I liked it. This woman is my hero. She reminds me that no matter what the size, you have to work what you have. You’d never see her in sweat pants in public. Ever. When that thought crosses my mind, My photo of Queen on my CLOSET DOOR comes to life and scolds me.

  • MissMariRose

She looks better in that dress than the model. Kudos to CMV for making a dress that requires a womanly figure to make it work.

  • The Queen’s skinning is glistening/glowing from within. She looks amazing in that dress and I love how the silver accessories comply the look of the shimmery navy.

  • capybara_cafe

She is amazing, but WHAT is going on with the model’s foot? That has to be a pasted in foot, cause the angle is making my brain hurt.

    • Yep, looks like an episode of “legs don’t bend that way” photoshop.

  • Mmmm mmmm. Yummy! And this is another (somewhat rare) case of the-dress-looks-better-on-the-celebrity.

  • QL looks perfect! Only thing on my wish list would be that the neck line was a bit lower and open….the “girls” need some air.

  • aquiestoy

If i had a smile like hers, I would smile even in my sleep.

  • That weird peplum looks like gills to me, which is a weird thing to have on one’s hips. Regardless, she looks gorgeous.

  • Anathema_Device

Stunning. I also like ease of her posing: no fakey twists and gyrations, just beautiful composure.

Agree with other BKs that this looks better on her than the model.

    • Jessica Goldstein

I think it’s the cut of the bodice. Narrow Vs are great for us less endowed folks, whereas I think wider Vs–as in this dress–require a reasonable bust to fill. As someone else said, Queen Latifa is a tall, hourglass, and this dress flatters every curve.

  • That peplum isn’t in the right place on her OR the model. Other than that, I WANT THAT DRESS.

    • l_c_ann

Yes, exactly. Or, heaven forbid, the next big thing will be peplums out of place.

  • Love the nail colour … does anyone know what it is?

  • poggi

I like the peplum from the side and back views. It nicely accentuates her hourglass curves, but from the front it just kind of disappears and almost looks like pooched out pockets. But she looks beautiful and knows it! I love her.

  • Dear Melissa McCarthy, This is how its done. Love, The Bitter Kittens

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

    • Jen

Normally I’d agree, because Queen is STUNNING and otherwordly in her beauty, but nowhere near a similar shape as Melissa McCarthy. Queen Latifah is tall and statuesque with a proportionate hourglass figure. Melissa McCarthy is a short straight up apple, all waist and belly. I am built very similarly to MMcC (and Rebel Wilson), and probably the same size as her to boot, and it is SO HARD to dress well, especially formal dresses. Smaller apples get away with the more unstructured shapeless modern dresses. Not us. anything with a true waist, or fitted at the waist looks dumpy/lumpy/rolly. Anything slightly higher than a true waist works better, but also tends to make you look knocked up. Good times!

Now, Rebel works it better than Melissa, that’s for sure, (and maybe is more willing to be shoved by shapewear) but it also seems like Melissa has an issue showing her arms (which I do not get. Own it pretty lady!!), which just makes it all worse-dowdy-blergh.

Still, no one of any size looks more gorg, than Queen.

      • I meant it more as, no matter what size or shape you are, you can look amazing. Melissa has a much shorter torso, so this would not work for her. You have made valid points.

  • suzanne77

Congrats on the shout out from Carmen Marc Valvo guys! AWESOME!

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

    All hail the Queen!

  • decormaven

Whoever does her makeup always hits it out of the park. The dress, the accessories, and most of all, her confidence in herself- beyond beautiful. Thank goodness for Queen Latifah!

    • Whoever does her makeup has a wonderful canvas to work with. That helps. The woman has skin like buttah.

      • understateddiva

Seriously. I’ve been watching old episodes of Living Single, and her skin looks exactly the same. She doesn’t age!

  • stubbornthoughts

I love her. Always smiling and loving life. She just radiates!

  • Chris Pine and Queen Latifah just made my sartorial day. If this is the last post I read, I’m good for the weekend.

In other words, she looks FABULOUS.

  • lizlemonglasses

*Almost* making me forgive her for “Joyful Noise.”

  • Coco Cornejo

I wonder if she consciously channels the Queen of Jazz — Ella Fitzgerald — in her styling.

  • Melanie

She is just the best. Look at her eye makeup. Do you think she’d be my friend?

  • Meredith_P

She looks spectacular, but the peplums could have been on omitted on her version. But spectacular anyway.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

*Curtseys to the floor* “You look spectacular, Ma’am!”

  • The peplum was really shoddily constructed. Pulls from the look.

  • Not applicable

I wish Melissa McCarthy could share Queen’s stylist. Or even just mimic her a bit… this is how it’s done, mz.

  • luluransom

Omg, Cher the Lesser. Perfect, as is this look. well, minus the peplum…

  • Jessica Goldstein

I don’t mind the peplum and think the overall shape is fabulous on her. I know she’s had some missteps—haven’t we all?—but I usually think Queen Latifa is one of the best dressed at every event she attends. She’s a beautiful woman with terrific taste who knows what works for her. I’m a huge admirer.

  • Joyce VG

    She’s beautiful.

  • barbarienne

I was all, “What is with a peplum on a sequined gown? This has officially gone too far!”

Alas, Queen looks so spectacular, designers will continue to think peplums are acceptable in all places. They will not realize that this dress mostly works because the person wearing it is (a) doing everything else to perfection, and (b) an unearthly creature of surpassing presence and beauty, not a mere mortal.

  • Cover Girl has been nothing but spectacular for the Queen.

  • Synnamin

I am now convinced that she has a painting in an attic somewhere. LUV HER

  • Contralto

  • Hell yes!

  • unbornfawn

The right dress on the right woman, properly fitted and accessorized. You don’t have to be skinny to be FABULOUS!

  • julnyes

Loving everything but the peplum. I really like her hair color – that shade really works for her.

  • mjude

  • Pterodactyl111

As a larger lady myself, it’s so refreshing and wonderful to see her looking so good. My fashion goal is to look a quarter that fabulous.

  • MissAmynae

Her bone structure is everything and a bag of chips.

    Bowing down.

  • She’s got one hell of a beautiful smile, in addition to all the other gorgeousness.

  • E. D.

It’s a WERQ without the dishtowels.

  • If it were a full peplum, it might have added a wonderful bit of quirk on top, but that halfway thing just looks odd.

  • Lilithcat

I cannot get behind blue fingernails.

  • bellafigura1

Mmmn, except for the earrings. Too frumpy, and with the up-do and that gorgeous decolletage, a drop would have been lovely.

  • jetpackdino

She never disappoints. Looking at her is like a sunny day. Gorgeous!

  • Wow–love that dress on Ms. Q’s curves so much better than on the model. She is stunning.

  • quiltrx

    She looks gorgeous and classy!
Speaking as another woman of size, though..I don’t want mud flaps over my love handles.

  • PeaceBang

Hot diggety dang, this woman knows how to stand there and radiate gorgeous fierceness. She is stupendous. And your post made me LOL, fellas.

  • kikisayshi

    Love huh. Stunning.

  • xmixiex

as everyone has said, GORGE. and I love her diamond leopard bangle!!!!! just a little sass with that class!

  • NiseiShonagon

She is a Grecian column of fab in that dress.

  • Iroqhard

GAWD I love her. She is fabulous (I agree about the half peplum, though- snatch those off of her!). That close up of her face? How smooth is her skin- like her face AND neck. Damn. All hail the queen, indeed.

  • largishbearishAtlish

    Bow.The.F.Down people….royalty. Truly a Queen. Thank you Ms L.

  • Rebecca Jay

Dizzy with love for her, and this, and her.

  • Patricia Gillett

Never have the words “bow the F down” been more appropriate. That is a woman who lights up a room. Excellent choices on the dress color, makeup, and accessories. Also, can we get some snaps for the tailoring in the dress and foundation garments? No detail left to chance.

The Queen has had it up to here with starlets who half ass it on the RC, she’s showing them how it’s done,

  • Beverly Kozma

I think she has the most beautiful skin color of anyone I’ve ever seen. I am always amazed at how golden she is. And of course, she’s also gorgeous.

  • Queen Latifah is beautiful. The dress isn’t the best but it doesn’t look good on the runway model either.

  • Puckndc

  • librarygrrl64

Melissa McCarthy needs to call this woman’s stylist, stat.

  • Also: she does not age.

  • “Cher the Lesser”, or “The Lesser Cher” sounds like the zoo sign outside the exhibit, to differentiate from “the Great Cher”, same as with pandas.

Which, btw, are totally mislabeled. The red panda (aka the “lesser” panda” are so much more awesome than their fat, too lazy to have sex, cousins.
