WERQ: Paz Vega in Roberto Cavalli at Cannes

Posted on May 16, 2013

Well, DAMN.

Paz Vega attends the Opening Ceremony and ‘The Great Gatsby’ Premiere during the 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival in a Roberto Cavalli crystal-embroidered gown paired with a Ferragamo clutch and pumps.

It’s Cannes, darlings. There’s a long history of just this sort of attention-seeking fashion on its red carpets. Would we want to see this at the Oscars, or even a film premiere? Not likely. But that is one hell of a head-turning look and it’s entirely venue-appropriate. She gets our snaps of respect not just for the divatude of it all, but for somehow not getting a heel snagged in that skirt. You WERQ that “Kiss of the Spider Woman” realness, gurl!

      Shutting. It. Down.

    • marlie

Who would have thought that I’d love sheer over granny panties? But this? She looks really gorgeous. That beading detail is AH-MAZING.

    • lexilexi

      NO NO NO NO NO!

    • carnush

      Damn. Fantastic.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

That over the shoulder look? I died.

    • MilaXX

I cannot cosign a look that is missing the bottom half.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Sexy sexy! And she knows it. I wish the bottom half was not SO sheer – it’s taking some attention away from the top half and her face is werqing like crazy!!

    • PastryGoddess

I hate her simply because her hair is divine

    • BrooklynBomber

Well, if that’s the kind of dress she wanted, she certainly got it!

    • Jasmaree

I’m just not feeling it. It looks pretty damn tacky to me (but not enough to be entertaining) and the shoes are all wrong for it. So after reading this, my only real thought was “that’s not what spider-woman’s power is.”

    • Sally Brownson

“Kiss of the Spider Woman realness” is the quote of the week. I LOVE that movie.

    • http://twitter.com/SioConnellan Siobhan Connellan

I can’t believe you just gave a “WERQ” to dyed-to-match stripper shoes.

    • Rand Ortega

Redunkulously gorgeous. Same impact that JLo had w/ the Versace at the Grammys back when. THIS is what Zoe should’ve worn to the Trek premiere if she wanted space-future funkiness instead of that drab tablenavelcloth she slapped on.

    • AndresB

A spider web curtain of glass beads over a bathing suit from 1954, worn with pasty make up on an expressionless face and the stripper platform ugliness from two years ago?
      No.
There’s no WERQ without taste in my book, so this can’t be a WERQ for me.

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Oddly enough the effect of a sheer beaded dress over an Esther Williams type bathing suit is precisely why this appeals to me for some reason. She’s not wearing “granny panties”; she’s wearing a bathing suit. And for some reason, it doesn’t read as tacky to me (this time).

    • http://twitter.com/younglibrarian Katie Dunneback

Also? So appropriate for the film that’s premiering.

    • gabbilevy

As always, knowing the right Time and Place to break out a garment can take it from tacky to SPECTACULAR.

      • Julie

I cannot NOT laugh when I see the word spectacular in any reference to a look. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BL2PicT9Kng

      • RebeccaKW

A tube top and hot pants covered in sparkly netting should be a horrifying sight. This thing is amazing.

      • sojourneryouth

Yep. And, somehow, even though it is sheer, spangly, and showing mucho skin, it isn’t in any way trashy, which is kind of amazing. She looks gorgeous and elegant, full stop. I should qualify my former statement by saying it’s not trashy ON HER. Put it on Beyonce, and, well, Vegas Baby!

        • drdarke

Wow – now that is how to make sheer, glittery and half naked look both elegant and sexy, rather than like a wardrobe malfunction!

I hope Gywneth Paltrow is taking notes….

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

That is one amazing garment. if it manages to make it through the evening unscathed, it will be a profound miracle.

      • Donna Tabor

No kidding. I can hear the sounds of beads scattering as I look at these pics.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

The beads were probably applied using the lunette technique, which means a broken thread costs you a whole line of beads or sequins.

          • Rand Ortega

            You. Are. My. God.

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

              Blushes furiously.

          • Qitkat

Hey, Kiltdntiltd, if you google “lunette technique”, which I just did, you will not find anything to do with sewing on the first page, but the expression on your face will probably look like this:
            ^00^

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

              I love you for this!

            • MikeW_Vegas

Okay, i just had to do it.. and now I’m off my feed for lunch

            • TheAmericaness

GAH! You guys! Now I HAAAAVVVEE to go look.

            • another_laura

              Looked. *glurp*

            • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

              That’s just wrong.

            • MilaXX

I was nervous googling this, but then laughed. I used to use a feminine cup & never knew there was a term for them

    • Qitkat

I took a deep breath before opening this post. I have never seen her look so — uncrazy? But if she trips in that dress, everyone nearby will be slipping like banana peels.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=811053804 Stacy Parker Cole

I think you may be confusing the Pazes.. lol I know I did at first!

        • Qitkat

I DID! and just now realized it.

    • AmeliaEve

I normally loathe things with half-sheer skirts, but there are two big things that make this work for me. First, the proportions are correct. There’s no awkward knee-length underskirt; the bodysuit underneath lets us see the full line of her legs. Second, the dress and undergarment are one piece and not awkwardly popped on layers. The way the necklines match up at the front vee is smooth and elegant. Lastly, this is beadwork, not tulle, so it hangs beautifully. I would love to see it in motion — I bet it looks really sinuous and slinky.

      • Janet B

        This!

    • padma sallah

I dont know how she sat down but hotdamn, that is one hell of a dress. And she’s definitely WERQing the shit out of it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I hate that the undergarment is shorts, as I am concerned for having to go to the restroom with shorts to pull down and crystals to hold up. Otherwise, full on stunning.

      • Donna Tabor

You’re clearly too practical to go red carpeting, Jessica! LOL

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I am a mere mortal. I wouldn’t survive such things.

      • StellaZafella

These people don’t go to the bathroom…they have people to do that for them.

      • RebeccaKW

Maybe she wears those adult diapers. According to the commercial with the dancer from the celebrity dance show, she can wear one while she performs in her little tiny dancing dress.

    • Janet B

      The bead work is amazing.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1180174329 Elizabeth Phillips

I saw “Paz” and thought, “OH, MY GOD!!!!… SHE DOESN’T LOOK LIKE A DRUG-ADDLED STREETWALKER!!!!!!!!!!!!…” Then I realized it was Paz VEGA, not Paz DE LA HUERTA and felt guilty.

This is spectacular! Love the beading and the sheer and the hair and makeup and the bag and those shoes! Absolutely perfect for Cannes.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I had to google, don’t feel bad.

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Whereas I saw the picture, thought “OMG it’s Penelope Cruz” and then I felt guilty for lumping all Hispanic women in one basket.

    • jetpackdino

All I see are the granny panties. :(

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Smith/12431153 Emily Smith

I’ve never seen her face without dark unflattering make up on this is lovely

      • MilaXX

This is Paz Vega, not Paz de la Huerta

        • Rand Ortega

Whatever happened to ‘ol Batshit Crazypants, anyway? Is she still on “Boardwalk Empire”?

          • MilaXX

No she got fired season before last.

    • http://www.facebook.com/conysoledad Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

I’m struggling with the concept of “gown”.
This looks like underwear with a net on top.

    • jamie2348

Oof I don’t know. The beading is obviously stunning but the proportions are a little off to me.

    • Diego!

STUNNING and I luv huh!!!! Peace for Paz! :D

    • TSkot

See-thru skirt over granny panties. Tacky as shit.

    • IAmJ

I just wanted to applaud the manicure job for not being gimmicky and not trying too hard. Simple, clean and pretty.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Nope, sorry, nuh-uh. I can’t co-sign on this one. Frankly, like our fashion nemesis Nude Shoes, I simply cannot WAIT till the “sheer skirt” trend is over.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I just posted the exact same thing, nearly word for word. Great minds and all that!

    • Chaiaiai

ROARGEOUS. not sure about the shoes, though.

um, ahem. Did anyone else read the Fug Girls link about how Cannes is a venue for actress/model types to prostitute themselves out for serious bank? Now when I look at these red carpet ensembles, it gives me pause about how much of that is….advertising? Anyhow. Carry on, Paz.

    • flamingoNW

Pretty awesome except for the side hair.

    • alyce1213

It breaks my heart that such exquisite beadwork was wasted over a white romper.

How can such beauty wind up so tacky?

    • http://profiles.google.com/adj.blair Adriana Blair

Granny panties under a sheer skirt paired with satiny nude peep-toe pumps…and yet it all just works.

    • Anniebet

Pretty astounding, incredibly lovely overdress. Too bad about the maxipad effect on the crotch.

    • porcupie

Spider-Woman’s power is apparently to get caught in sparkly fishnets whilst wearing a vintage swimsuit.

    • MissAmynae

Absolutely Stunning. Perfect for Gatsby at Cannes, perfect for her. So nice to see actual construction with the corset and shorts, rather than a bra and spandex-y granny panties.

The workmanship and quality of materials is what makes this a WERQ for me. If we had the illusion netting, stuck on beads effect going, (marchesa, I’m looking at you) then it would be a tacky-fest.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Clydette-Wantland/673315286 Clydette Wantland

That could not be comfortable to sit in especially with all the little beads.

    • Lilithcat

You mean UN-werq, no? Because she’s UNdressed.

There is no time, no place, no way that granny panties under a sheer sparkly dress are ever appropriate.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

It’s an old-timey bathing suit with sparkly webbing. No no no.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Monzerrat-Ontiveros/100000216133922 Monzerrat Ontiveros

      I hate her makeup.

    • decormaven

Not loving the shoe, but that may be the best choice, given the transparency/beading in the skirt.

    • Eva_baby

Oh, I respectfully disagree that this is a WERQ.

The fact that the dress cost 2000 times what it would have cost at the local ‘Fantasy Nites Dream Boutique’ and is on the Cannes Red Carpet makes no difference. It still looks like stripper wear.

    • 909girl601world

      That? Is horrid.

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

      Complete Riviera sex bomb.

    • random_poster

Beading is cool, but that is still one tacky granny-panties-under-sheer-skirt dress.

    • susan6

I can SEE the workmanship in that dress and it’s beautiful, love the top part and the very bottom part, but…..granny panties. If only there were a way to un-granny panty this dress. Maybe instead of a panty, make it a slip lining down to the diamond motif?

    • VicD

Note to our dear gay uncles – Uncles, you need to go lie down. You’re obviously not feeling well.

    • frannyprof

CanNOT believe this got a TLo Werq. It’s not bad… it’s just not Werq-worthy. Sheer skirt, granny panties, colorless (or old-bra colored)…

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Very nice eye. What’s a Paz Vega?

    • E. D.

Love it except for the shoes. That needs strappy sandals.

    • thecitysleeps

      Nah.

    • rh33

That’s an amazing swim suit and cover-up. Film premiere and then to the yacht!

    • Dagney

Perfection. And thank you thank you thank you to whoever is responsible to making sure her boobs look good and sexy in a grown-up, confident woman, manner. She is not falling out and oozing like some desperate, insecure girl.

    • Lori

I don’t find this head-turning, unless we’re counting turning to look at someone else, which I assume we are not. I’m just so totally bored by the sheer over some version of granny’s clothing that I can’t get excited about it in any way any more. This is part of a Vegas showgirl outfit over grandma’s swimsuit. When this trend was young (that was years and years ago, right?) this would have been noteworthy. Now it just feels tired and a little desperate to me.

    • l_c_ann

Wait till the photos of her leaving after sitting for two hours.

    • Ediths_Head

If you described this look to me, I would cry and say “NO! Just no!” imploringly with my eyes squeezed shut and my hands outstretched in supplication. But…

Seeing it, I love it. GORGEOUS, just gorgeous. Studio system snaps to Paz. Whoever she is.

    • Tee

From a distance, no. But up close….DAY-UM!!! That gets an around the world and back snap!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1582777135 Melanie K. Morgan

Really? I think I’m witnessing a case of mass hysteria. PULL IT TOGETHER, PEOPLE. SHE IS WEARING A SWIMSUIT WITH A BEADED COVERUP. THIS IS NOT A WERQ. THIS IS A DON’T.

    • http://twitter.com/VersatileChef The Versatile Chef

That first pic? Sorry, between the makeup and the slim hips and the outfit, I got drag queen.

    • macwell

Class is in session! This is how you werq a Cannes red carpet people!

    • http://www.facebook.com/bert.keeter Bert Keeter

      Well done exhibitionism! Perfection!

    • jmorino08

Lord Jesus boys! That is some stripper chic if I ever saw it! Wrong wrong wrong wrong!

    • Mlzx

It’s striking from the side, but that shape of that romper underneath is just …… silly. I really hate it. This is almost an out for me, if not for the drama and confidence.

    • quiltrx

LOL I had my Paz’s mixed up, and I thought the other one had had an EXORCISM or something. Ah well, she’s probably giving handjobs somewhere while this one walks the RC in Cannes.

    • http://twitter.com/macNsqueeze kathryn schnepp

she looks like a mash-up of Emmy Rossum and Allison Wiliams, facially.

    • Jonquil

The ombre hair is killing me. It’s acceptable if you’re running around Bonnaroo in cutoffs, but I don’t think it belongs on the red carpet.

    • http://twitter.com/RaankyRaank Raanky

      J’adore, J’adore, J’adore…

    • lovelyivy

Co-sign! She’s the spiritual heir of Cher in her Bob Mackie phase- this should be tacky and it is, but it’s also fucking fabulous.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Even after mulling it over for 24 hours, I am not feeling this as a fashion WERQ. Posing & attitude? Yes. Otherwise? I can’t agree.

    • PeaceBang

I would honestly love this on a drag queen. As it is, it feels to me like a “Sexy Miss Havisham” costume for a fundraising ball: something really doesn’t work (let alone WERQ). I hate the shoes, make-up and possum-on-the-shoulder hair.

    • lalahartma

      The crotch area, though. :(

    • lizajane1776

I think the reason this works is that it is beaded net, not sheer fabric. The net being in an art nouveau pattern makes it venue appropriate. Go, gurl!

    • Beverly Kozma

I hate the shorts, but the crystals are awesome.
