WERQ: Nicole Kidman in Valentino at Cannes

Posted on May 24, 2013

Wow, she’s really WERQing that Princess Grace drag, no?

Nicole Kidman attends the premiere of ‘Nebraska’ during the 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival in a Valentino gown accessorized with Cathy Waterman jewelry.

Well, we all knew she would, and really, it’s just good common sense, given where she is. That gown is beautiful, but we think it really takes someone who does good “regal” to really make it sing. It would look colorless on someone else, but on Princess Nicole, it goes all Cinderella instantly. And we LOVE the hair. Just a breathtaking look overall; chic, regal, and glamorous at the same time. And isn’t that the essence of Princess Grace? You WERQ that Serene Highness shit, Miss Lady.

WERQ! I could do without the earrings.

Rumor has it this was the dress Anne Hathaway was supposed to wear to the Oscars. It ended up on the right lady…

  • gsk241

Definitely a werq! And I want those earrings. Now.

  • itsdawn

I read elsewhere (Dlisted) that this is the dress Anne Hathaway was supposed to wear to the Oscars but didn’t because it looked too much like Amanda Seyfried’s dress. Too bad because this dress is SO beautiful, and the one she did wear wasn’t.

  • claudemtl777

She also look a lot more regal sans Keith Urban…

  • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

The hair us So Much Better than the usual severe ponytail that makes her forehead gigantic. And this is the type of dress that really benefits from her height. Nothing to complain here, girl is WERQing it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=149100065 Virginia McMurdo

    Dipped-in-diamonds realness.

  • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

    Flawless.

  • crash1212

    WERQ indeed. Full snaps.

  • l_c_ann

Please let new trends start here.

  • Jessi03

Annie could have made this work quite nicely, too. Anything would have been better than that donut lady apron she ended up wearing.

  • Janet B

    Perfection.
On anyone else I’d be complaining about the lack of color.

  • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Yes, rumor has it this is the dress Anne Hathaway was supposed to wear to the Oscars but changed her mind after finding out that Amanda Seyfried was going to wear a similar dress by Alexander McQueen: http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2013/02/oscars-2013-red-carpet-rundown.html So she decided to wear this Prada dress: http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2013/02/oscars-2013-anne-hathaway-in-prada.html L

    • MilaXX

bad move this dress is soooo much prettier.

      • RebeccaKW

I can see a bit of a similarity with the color and the sheer with the embroidery. But I think they are different enough that AH could have worn this and not be compared, beyond color. In addition, all eyes were on Anne, Amanda’s dress would have been drowned out. This dress is much more striking than what AH wore.

    • MK03

      Rookie mistake, Anne. SMH.

    • l_c_ann

      Silly Anne.

    • marlie

Really bad move on Annie’s part. She would have stolen the show from Amanda in the Valentino.

  • Sara__B

She’s been WERQing Cannes this year, with one lovely, well- styled outfit after another. Well done!

  • http://twitter.com/hmbscully WendyD

I am bowing down to that!

  • iheartbuffy

WERQ! The netting on the back is especially amazing.

    • marlie

THAT’S how you do illusion netting.

    • marlie

THAT’S how you do illusion netting.

  • MilaXX

She looks pretty and I covet those earrings.

  • MoHub

    WERQ, indeed!

  • Mismarker

Bow down, bee cheese. Love it all. Nicole has got her groove back.

  • Diego!

You WERQ that statuesque version of you Nicole!!! She looks STUNNING!

  • sagecreek

    I love the back.

  • barbarienne

I’m again fascinated by trains on gowns. I mean, they are beautiful and graceful and really look great, but I always wonder what they look like at the end of the night.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

Well, if they’re anything like the train of my wedding dress..pretty dirty

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

To Die For was on last night, and per usual, I was compelled to watch it. Her attention to detail in her roles and on the carpets make her one of my top five favorites. She brings back the glamour of it all in ways that most of her peers just can’t accomplish. WERQ, indeed.

    • MoHub

Love that flick! One of her best!

    • alyce1213

I can’t not watch that movie whenever I see it’s on. Been a big fan of hers ever since — hard to believe it was made almost 20 years ago.

  • Frank_821

Yes it suits Princess Nicole to a tee. and you can’t ask for a more humble and refined escort than Ang Lee :p

    • marlie

I have such a nerd-crush on Ang Lee. Humble and refined, indeed!

      • cowper

A total aside, but on the DVD of Sense and Sensibility (best movie EVER), there is some delightful commentary from Emma Thompson where she talks about working on the movie and starts singing “Ang Lee” in a parody of some song, I forget which. I think you also hear how Kate Winslet passes out on set because of the extreme working conditions. Anyway, he’s clearly a perfectionist and a truly great director.

  • carnush

    Stunning! (Hi Ang Lee!)

  • nannypoo

This is very different from Amanda Seyfried’s dress and a lot prettier than the one she ended up wearing. I absolutely agree with you – she should have gone with Plan A.

  • stardust462

If I had seen this hairstyle before my wedding a few months ago, I most definitely would have had my stylist do this. It’s stunning, as is the whole look.

  • random_poster

Absolutely gorgeous! If she’d just had the hair in a glamorous updo it would still be a beautiful look, but I think the hairstyle is what takes it over the edge to a WERQ.

  • MsALVA

LOVES IT. It would make the most stunning wedding gown, wouldn’t it? It’s beyond gorgeous. One hundred snaps in a circle, Nic.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

That dress looks AMAZING on her!!!!!

  • Emily Giovanni

Gorgeous. I am glad Anne Hathaway decided to cast this dress away at the last minute before the Oscars so that this look could happen instead.

  • Denise Alden

Who is more adorable than Ang Lee? No one, that’s who!

    • kimbalala

i was thinking the exact same thing.

    • http://twitter.com/sillytwigg twigg

He always reminds me of a proud dad at his kid’s graduation.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Monzerrat-Ontiveros/100000216133922 Monzerrat Ontiveros

Also her face looks normal. :)

  • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

This dress is stunning. Beautiful fit.

Not a good color for Nicole. The earrings are distracting.

  • SewingSiren

The Princess Grace look suits her.

  • alyce1213

Drop dead gaw-juss. Her hair is so beautiful, perfect for the look.
    That’s a movie star!

  • conniemd

Valentino schools the other designers on how to do a sheer netting over a lining.

And Nicole could always wear clothes. I’m so happy with the Princess Grace pole dance because now she’s styling her hair to match the clothes. What an improvement.

  • stubbornthoughts

Holy. WERQ. She looks fucking phenomenal.

Ladystars, don’t try this at home. It takes a real expert A-list movie star to make an ivory doily dress look like a Best Dressed winner. DAMN.

  • StellaZafella

The hair’s not a difficult do. But it wouldn’t want to be with everything else being as it is. Sometimes, less (or the illusion of it) is definitely more.

    Gorgeous.

  • http://viridianpostcard.blogspot.com/ viridian61

Thank you for including different views so that I can see the surface design on that fabric. Signed a fabric fanatic.

  • MK03

How much would I have to pay someone to sneak this out to me? And how much would I have to pay a seamstress to alter it to fit me?

  • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

Also, Ang Lee you are so cute I could eat you up.

  • lundibleu

She looks amazing, and it just works for her where it wouldn’t for others.

The thumbnail did make me think of Lisa Marie in Mars Attacks though…

  • Judy_J

I think the earrings are a bit too heavy for this dress. Perhaps if they were platinum instead of yellow gold? And doesn’t Ang Lee look pleased as punch to be standing next to her.

  • Tr16ia

I am werqshipping this entire look.

  • mjude

love her & i will bow the fuck down for nicole.

  • JenJW

She looks lovely. I think she’s laying off the Botox a bit.

  • steeg of their own

This is the best I’ve seen her look in a long time. Maybe she needs to tell her stylist that she just wants to look like Princess Grace all the time, she’s got the bone structure and the carriage to pull it off.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1129137319 Paula Pertile

    Also love the hair.

  • theecstaticflash

Earrings are beyond stunning. SNAPS! Take THAT Anne Hathaway!

  • tereliz

Was just going to ask that. It looks gorgeous on Nicole! She has the poise to carry off such a heavy-looking gown.

  • KAO TV

    WERQQQQ!!

  • marlie

She looks simply STUNNING. Love this!

  • msdamselfly

You’re right on the money—she’s oozing Princess Grace

    BTW Isnt Ang Lee adorable?

  • decormaven

Everything, everything is on point, from head to toe. Gorgeous!

  • Qitkat

Is this a new trend this season, the soutache, I mean? When I saw this Valentino, I immediately thought of the Marchesa which Jessica Biel wore from the post on May 20. Such an incredible amount of work to create both looks.

Nicole looks beautiful, especially with the lovely hair. The earrings are a bit over the top baroque for me.

    • Lattis

SOUTACHE Thanks for that – I always wondered what you call that technique. Yeah, the work or making that dress boggles my mind! I was looking at that skirt – all that square footage to fill with ribbon – all sewn by hand – all the rhinestones sewn on one by one. It kind of deserves a place in a museum.

  • TheAmericaness

Very beautiful. I think it’s funny that I went “Oh! A Valentino!” not because of the style of dress, but because of the hallway the model was standing in. Must of recognized that fireplace. *eyeroll* sad.

  • formerlyAnon

Lovely, lovely gown, and she wears it well. I’m neutral on the hair. It’s nice, but that’s all I can feel about it. I really would have loved to see this on Hathaway, if it was, indeed, meant for her.

  • unbornfawn

The girl does know how to WERQ a red carpet.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

A rare moment of disagreement with the T and Lo. Think the hair looks strange. Hate the color of the dress – it’s so drab. Hate the neckline. I just don’t like it at all. huh.

  • jen

    Perfection!

  • LaSylphide

The dress is beautiful, but I really think a vibrant color would improve it a lot, and would look better on Kidman.

  • KTBSN

    Just absolutely gorgeous.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

sorry, but if i see another white dress, i’m gonna jump off a bridge. AND, if i see another white dress on nicole, i am gonna jump off two bridges. enough, already.

  • librarygrrl64

    Beautiful.

  • Coco Cornejo

She’s beautiful from the neck up. The rest of it? Meh.

  • aahlife

Ever since she had her lips done, I cannot not focus on them. For years, they were quite lopsided, glad she finally succeeded in even them out. They still do not look natural, wish she had stuck to her original expressive, thin lipped mouth. That said, as they are less distractable, I can now see the entire look, and it is impressive.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jacoryd JaCory Deon

She looks amazing. I would’ve given her a frostier color on the lip to make it a little less “princess” but the woman can dress, no shade.

  • E. D.

WERQ. Although as a fellow curlie, I wish she’d give her poor hair a break more often.

  • Louise Bryan

    Amen!

  • guest2visits

She’s beautiful head to toe, but I find the gold tone earrings a strange choice for the cloudy grey shade of the gown.

  • demidaemon

    WOW!

  • NoGovernmentName

Perfect in every way but the earrings, which look strangely cheap.

  • Sunraya

I hate to disagree, but I don’t like this on her. I think this gown calls for a dark haired woman. She is all pale and dishwater looking. Blah. Gorgeous gown, but it for her.

  • kimiakay

Ever since I saw Nicole in To Die For I have been a huge fan. The dress is amazing, and her face is glowing. Perfect makeup.

  • Citagaze

Really wish the “His Dark Materials” had been able to continue, only to see Kidman WERQ Ms. Coulter’s killer style like only she could (The author even said he had her in mind when writing the character within the trilogy)

  • Puckndc

    SERIOUS WERQ!!!…..she is rocking that…

  • mmc2315

I’m so surprised she is able to make that color work.

  • PeaceBang

She looks beautiful but I swooned seeing it on the model. Oh, and big ups for being next to Ang Lee.

  • hailtree

her dress looks like a big, beautiful, giant doily which I can only dream of wearing in this ball happening in my head.

  • sweet_potato

    Yep.

  • MannahattaMamma

chop that dress into tea-length, make it strapless, et voila, it’s almost exactly what Jessica Biel wore a day or so earlier, although that dress was by Marchesa & Bielly-bopper sported a snakelace as her jewelry. It’s like there was a special at the fabric store on this lacey, your auntie’s doilies sort of fabric. Just sayin.
