WERQ: Jay-Z in Tom Ford

Posted on May 03, 2013

The Number 1 reason we declared today XY Friday on the site…

Jay-Z attends the world premiere of ‘The Great Gatsby’ in New York City in Tom Ford.

… the men have been KILLING it lately.

He’s a little wrinkled and we sure as hell wish he’d get his hands out of his pockets, but the fit on that suit is beautiful. He’s too barrel-chested to do the skinny suit thing so many celebumen are starving themselves into, but this is how the average man’s suit should look on him. The fit alone would get us to snap in respect, but the suit is making us drool with envy. We wants it.

We’d have picked a tie with some color in it, but we may have to amend our boredom with all-grey ensembles. Apparently, we’re just bored of all-grey ensembles on white guys.

You WERQ that chic-as-shit shit, Mr. Z.

Applause! This is a very, very good suit.

    • drdarke

      Looking GOOD, Jay-Z!

  • I love him for reasons I’m not entirely sure of.

  • TheLaurenJean

Really? This is a work? I mean, I get that he looks good and it is well fitted, but I wouldn’t have given this a second look.

    • jenuwefa

That’s because so few men wear their suits properly fitted these days that just seeing one with a nice well-fitted suit is enough to garner a WERQ…sad but true….

      • TheLaurenJean

That’s depressing. Let’s hold them to a higher standard!

        • drdarke

@TheLaurenJean:disqus – um, as a man who wears cargo pants and polo shirts most of the time, and has two suits and two sports jackets to my name (and a tie – somewhere), good luck on that one….

      • butterflysunita

It’s the Home Depot effect: many men on the red carpet look like they’re dressed for shopping at Home Depot. So you get a guy who is not only in a suit but a beautiful, well-fitted suit….well, that is a WERQ.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

I’m with you…it takes a special kind of xy look to get me excited and a regular looking guy wearing a regular looking suit doesn’t jazz me, I dunno..

      • Sobaika

The regular-looking guy thing is debatable (different strokes for different folks and all that) but I don’t think that is a regular-looking suit. Leo has that locked up.

        • HomeOfficeGirl

I must defer to more trained eyes on the suits, for sure.

    • Meg0GayGuys6

I’m not that into it either. Although, I can appreciate a man with a fresh tape (or at least, that was the phrase when I was in high school…)

  • AwesomeMargie

Now THAT is how you wear a suit!

  • I love the patern of the suit and everything fits perfectly.
    Well done!!

  • hughman

    “He’s a little wrinkled..”

Well, sweetie, we can’t all zip down to Dr. Feelgood for a little ‘tox all the time. He’s a very busy man I’m sure, what with the baby. Oh, and also Blue Ivy.

  • This is what I’m talking about when I want male celebs on the red carpet to dress just a bit edgier…

    • filmcricket

I suspect the two pairs have nothing to say to each other, but I wish Will & Jada and Jay & Bey would give Hollywood lessons on how to be supremely dapper cats and also fierce as shit.

  • Good man. Too bad he looks shutter-shocked in almost every picture, because his smile is super cute (see that last picture). I just want to pinch his cheeks, but I don’t think Hova (or Bey) would like that. So snaps up instead.

Also, on second look, I think the grey on grey works particularly well because he didn’t skimp on the detailing – the suit not only has a subtle pattern, but also a rich (and not at all bankerly) texture that contrasts the smooth tie. Plus, collar-bar for the win; that’s some Roger Sterling realness right there.

    Just perfect. Sigh.

  • lucyloo222

    “Celebumen” Hahahaha. Perfect.

  • PastryGoddess

    Oh my…Happy Friday to me

Don’t mind me, I’ll be over here in the corner drooling

  • eowyn_of_rohan

In the immortal words of Peter Dinklage, “SHUT IT DOWN.” Sorry Leo, Hova wins this round.

  • He looks fabulous. LOOOOOVE the suit. I totally get why Tom Ford is the BF’s favorite suit designer.

  • This is a man who knows how to wear a suit. He’s impeccable every time.

  • Also, LOVE the collar of the shirt, and the tie pin (?). The little details are what really makes this look.

  • Zaftiguana

God, that’s a beautiful suit. I really hope suits in more prints and colors keep picking up steam.

  • carnush

Damn. He looks good. Gorgeous suit.

  • Lilyana_F

    Well, HELLO, Mr. Carter!

  • MilaXX

reason #0973607647609 why this movie will suck, Joe Camel did the sound track. Nice suit, though

  • filmcricket

REALLY nice suit. Well played, Mr. Carter.

Grass-green tie instead of grey? What do we think?

  • All I see are the Eyes of Dr. T J Eckleberg!!

  • He bugs me, but I have to admit that suit is lovely.

  • Oh, very nice! He is a good looking man. Even better looking in a suit.

  • Imasewsure

He looks elegant and comfortable which isn’t always easy to achieve in a suit and tie – love the subtle patterns on what could have just been an expensive but boring look (like most of his co-workers this round)

  • I am dreaming of a lavender/heather colored tie with this.

  • alyce1213

Sorry, it can’t be a WERQ with a wrinkled, matchy tie. He could have made a more interesting color choice to wear with that beautiful suit and plain white shirt.

    • conniemd

Exactly, first thing I noted was the wrinkly, matchy tie and I couldn’t get from that to whether the suit fit or not. Frankly not only was the tie wrinkly, it was ugly and annoyed me. So many interesting colors it could have been. To me the tie makes or breaks the suit and First I look at the Tie.

  • formerlyAnon

Clean-shaven men in nice suits. Keep ’em coming!

  • Gwyndall

I find myself wishing the collar bar was white metal instead of yellow, to keep with the monochrome theme.

  • guest2visits

    Best suit of the day.

  • gracedarling

Coming in March, Jay-Z IS The Great Gatsby!

Seriously, talk about a missed casting opportunity. I hope they do a hip-hop version a la Carmen Jones.

  • My, he does look delightful. The man can rock a suit.

  • quiltrx

I’ve never cared for him, but I can appreciate the way he fills out that gorgeous suit.

  • IAmJ

Fabulous. He almost always gets it right.

  • The beautiful fit, perfect cuff and hem length, the stylish classy print/stripe, the well-shined leather shoes that you can your reflection in and most of all, the perfect gold collar pin that just adds that subtle classy detail.

  • MissAmynae

    Grey-Z! He looks fantabulous.

  • fursa_saida

1st time I’ve ever felt attracted to Jay-Z, no lie.

  • OrigamiRose

    The personification of a butterface.

  • ItsDicey

    Beautiful suit.

  • Durelle Ali

I loathe and detest the big window pane-design in suits as unattractive and just plain corny … but a muted design in 100% Cashmere–and SUPREMELY-fitted–is so radical that it’s almost profound … the new BLING … WERQ it, Mr. Carter!!

  • shorty j

as a butch girl, I want that suit SO BADLY. But as a very short person, I hang my head and accept that it would look utterly ridiculous. I shall have to live vicariously through Mister Carter here.
