Tilda Swinton for Chanel

Posted on May 22, 2013

Darlings, here’s your Pretty of the Day, Tilda Swinton blasting fierceness all over Karl Lagerfeld’s face. We don’t think anything else need be said.

Tilda Swinto fronts new Chanel’s advertising campaign for the Paris-Édimbourg Métiers d’Art 2012-13 collection photographed by Karl Lagerfeld.

ADORE. Man, now I want her hair (especially when it’s all swoopy).

      • notterriblybitter

Ditto. I’ve been trying to get my hair to swoop for years but it’s just flops.

    • capybara_cafe

I LOVE both of those coats. I don’t care so much for the sweater-gown, but Tilda looks amazing in it anyway <3 <3

      • Snailstsichr

Yes to the coats – or really anything plaid and I will pretend I have .10 of La Swinton’s coolness.

      • RebeccaKW

        Tilda made that gown work.

Also, that sweater gown looks like it was designed for Game of Thrones. Winter is coming.

        • capybara_cafe

You’re right, it would be awesome for GoT.

        • Coolekat

Ygritte could wear either coat very well.

    • Janet B

      Thank you.

    • Diego!

    • e jerry powell

I just died. Fabulosity has slayed me.

    • Mary Lowry

can she please be my long lost aunt tilda? please?

    • DeborahJozayt

I want your haircut, Tilda! Give!!!!!

    • homofascist

    • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

Good GOODNESS! Especially, the 2nd photo. *bows down*

      • Coolekat

2nd photo shows a side of her I’ve never seen.

    • beebee10

      How does she do that?!?!
      thanks T and Lo

    • crash1212

Perfection. That white dress is so damned beautiful. All the clothes are amazing and she’s just beyond. SWINTON!

    • MarTeaNi

      Give me all of these.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Damnit SWINTON, you perfect otherworldly creature you. I am bowing. Deeply bowing.

      • charlotte

She is so otherworldly and perfect in these pictures that I cannot picture her doing the dishes…and I wonder what it’s like to have her as a mother.

        • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Can you imagine her ever having a frazzled, can’t find her keys, stepped in cat vomit, kid(s) covered in yogurt, running late for a meeting kind of morning?

          • mixedupfiles

Watch her in Julia — you’ll be able to imagine it. It’s still fantastic.

          • TheAmericaness

Can you imagine having her as a kid? “Oh, hi dear.. sorry to bother you at work again. So, Tilda’s teacher called again and has asked us to speak to her about being fabulous in class. Yes, I know, but it’s just so disruptive. Remember last night during dinner? We’re eating dinner and all of a sudden BAM! Fabulousness! I almost threw up her pose was so amazing. Yes, well, unless we want to have to switch public schools AGAIN, we’re going to have to lay down the law with her… ok. See you later sweetie.”

//Tilda Swinton blasting fierceness all over Karl Lagerfeld’s face.//

Not sure if I’m allowed to make a “fashion bukkake” joke here or not. If you delete this, I’ll understand. (However, in comedy, the above quote is referred to as a slow pitch down the middle of the plate.)

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

I love it when they (T Lo) occasionally work blue.

      • YoungSally

And KL is just letting the fierceness fly right past him because he’s just not that into her…..now should her fierceness land (accidentally) all over the shirtless (in my mind) photo/personal/professional/pool – boy behind him….that is just fine with KL.

    • Sara L.

Her intensity in that last photo is crazy! And she’s not even looking at the camera. It probably would have burst into flame if she had.

    • Lori

That white dress seems to exist for no other reason than for SWINTON to wear it. This seems perfectly reasonable to me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

      Utter Perfection.

    • iheartbuffy

3rd down BOW DA FUCK DOWN BITCHES. She’s incred.

    • MilaXX

LOVE that purple. Seriously, how does she look so awesome in each and every shot?

      • Introspective

Jesus that purple coat and her in it is literally EVERYTHING.

    • ChaCha_70

      Fuck yeah!

      • Fordzo

Booking dot YEAH! (I love those commercials.)

        • ChaCha_70

Hadn’t seen it so I just pulled it up on Vimeo. Yeah!

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I have been needing a tall cool glass of Tilda Swinton Fierceness.
      Many thanks, Gentlemen.

      • StellaZafella

The thing with la Swinton is that she doesn’t just “act” in front of the camera…she projects herself INTO the camera on film and photo. It makes for a level of intimacy that many so-called ‘good actors’ are uncomfortable with sans a written script…It involves a level of self awareness and It’s the difference between a great actor and a mere movie star.
Tilda Swinton doesn’t make odd fashion look fierce in pictures just because she’s an actor…but because it’s who she is.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

          Perfectly said, Stella.

    • trisker

I’ve seen these ads in Vogue — that is the most fascinating background — I think it’s some kind of dark print of the Benozzo Gozzoli chapel in the Palazzo Medici in Florence.

      • makeityourself

I saw the white one in Vogue too and stared at it for quite a while. I determined that she was a Tilda-wannabe-model that Karl had found somewhere, because the TIlda in the white was so much younger than the real Tilda, who is around 50. But her eyes were so mesmerizing that I couldn’t look away I’m glad the mystery has been solved. Karl just requested a bit of photoshopping and wrinkle removal because he’s all about youth, don’t you know. It would have been even more incredible if he had left Tilda in her beautiful, natural state.

        • Susannah

Having seen and even TOUCHED Tilda, she is legitimately ageless. I was watching Orlando a couple days ago (irony alert!) and she looks the same today as she did 22 years ago. Not a damn wrinkle on her. AND — you’re going to crap yourself — she wears no makeup. None. Not a swipe of eyeliner or a touch of tinted moisturizer.

But she’s Tilda, so I can’t be mad at her. Impossible.

      • Corsetmaker

It was shot in a renaissance castle in France so I’m assuming the tapestry is in situ in the castle. It does make a fabulous background.

    • formerlyAnon

What an awesome post to see after a couple of days out of the loop.

    • hellkell

She is divine, and I would cut a bitch for the coats.

    • http://twitter.com/KathrynTewson Kathryn Tewson

A friend of mine met Tilda Swinton at an event, and took a picture of her holding a sign that said “Dear Kathryn, You’re MAGNIFICENT!” and then sent me the picture and the sign both. When i opened the envelope, i just made little eeping noises of delight.

I made those same eeping noises looking at these pictures. AMAZING.

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

      • hellkell

        That is so awesome!

      • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

You have the very best friend in the entire world. Period.

        • Susannah

It’s MEEEEEEEEEE! And Tilda was the very best. We did a dance party to Barry White; I am not even shitting you. She is my spirit guide.

          • calbear97

That is a truly amazing story.

        • http://twitter.com/KathrynTewson Kathryn Tewson

I do have the very best friend in the entire world. Imagine someone who is so awesome that when she gets the opportunity to meet TILDA FCKING SWINTON, she thinks about how to use this opportunity to make someone else’s day.

As opposed to me, who would be just standing there heroically trying to repress the impulse to lick her or something.

          • Susannah

I did that, too, but that was later at the party.

      • Susannah

You goof. I was scrolling down these comments and was like, “Wait — someone ELSE had Tilda hold up a sign? And HER name is Kathryn, too????”

        It’s early.

        • http://twitter.com/KathrynTewson Kathryn Tewson

          get yourself some coffee, lady.

          • Susannah

I don’t drink coffee. But I did buy three kinds of chocolate at the pharmacy while picking up my drugs. That counts, right?

    • Griffinqueen

    • Sarah

She looks so much better in that stuff than the models ever could. Uncle Karl should clone her and only use her as a model 4EVA.

    • quiltrx

FABULOUS. That last pic is definitely my fave!
Man, the bone spur on my knee really gets a workout from all this BOWING DOWN!

    • 1964edithgrove

Also love Stella Tennant in the last photo. My favorite model, so versatile.

      • Cz

THAT’S who she is. My god. I have been scouring old supermodel photos trying to find her name!!! Thank you so much. I love that she is still on the runway.

        • 1964edithgrove

Yup, I think she’s about 40 now & still working hard for all the majors. She is so incredibly beautiful — like Tilda Swinton — in an androgynous kind of way.

    • alyce1213

      She is mesmerizing.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

Much like Tina and Amy should host ALL of the awards shows, Tilda should do ALL of the fashion editorials.

      • demidaemon

No. Tilda is like a chocolate truffle and must be savored. Too much and you’ll over-indulge. Also, if we had this everyday, what would happen on that day when it is all monotonous lace and sheer gowns?

    • nannypoo

You are not kidding she is fierce. Fabulous.

    • KayEmWhy

In all cases she looks better than the models. Exquisite! David Bowie’s sister from another mister in 3rd photo.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

      Amazing. Love her!

    • Cz

I want to be her when I grow up.

Also, because she does things like dance to Barry White’s My First My Last My Everything in a crowd to honor a friend (Roger Ebert).

I especially love the third shot with the red plaid. Love the accessories for their unpracticality.

      • Susannah

I was there! Were you? Seriously one of the most amazing moments of my life.

        • Cz

I was not! Just saw the video. I am very jealous and totally believe you that it was amahzing.

    • conniemd

OMG that picture with the white furry thing is just amaaaaazing.

    • MoHub

She is The SWINTON! That is all that need be said.

    • notoffred

Tilda looks better than the models.

    • ashtangajunkie

      Magnificent. Tilda forever.

    • Anniebet

Lagerfeld should be on his knees worshipping. I know I am.

      • Anniebet

And, dammit, I want to watch Orlando over and over and over.

    • filmcricket

The pictures aren’t showing up for me. ::sobs::

      • snarkykitten

        same!! :(

      • Anniebet

Turn off ad blocking mods if you have them then come back to the page. That worked for me.

        • filmcricket

Ah, that’s what it was, okay. I came into work this morning and they are here in all their glorious fabulousness. I wish I were 1/100th as fierce as SWINTON.

    • Pixiequeen

    • Corsetmaker

Fabulous and a perfect choice considering the Mary Queen of Scots inspiration in the collection.

    • Lilithcat

    • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

    • Trisha26

The pics don’t show for me either, just right click in the white space and click open in another tab. LOVE HER!

    • Orange Girl

She’s making the models look silly. And those are some serious models.

    • drdarke

Am I the only person who can’t get the images for this blog post…?

    • H2olovngrl

She is just so bitchin’, I can’t stand it!

    • Contralto

    • Qitkat

Try Firefox to see the images. Safari has been problematic lately.

    • Qitkat

The closeup in the white gown is exquisite. She is so intense, yet so dreamy and remote, awash with mysterious secrets.

    • Tee

If David Bowie and Peter O’Toole had a love child….Tilda is breathtaking!

    • http://www.facebook.com/jacoryd JaCory Deon

That pic with the white is the business, my mouth is agape in awe. What an incredible artist!

    • Chaiaiai

And that, Marjorie, just so you will know…and someday your children will know…is the night that Miss Lady SERVED Chanel.

    • Imasewsure

Gorgeous woman doing justice to gorgeous clothes in an interesting lay out… more please

    • kategs

good grief when did Lagerfeld start channeling Ralph Lauren? But I can look at SWINTON modeling anything.

    • MGMcD

      Bow the hell down.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

    • the_archandroid

Whenever I see her face pop up on this blog I think to myself “Time to buckle up!” because i know i’m about to be stampeded by fierceness. Also one of the few times where I think the celeb looks much better than the model.

    • Claudia

Too fierce for my computer, apparently. Tried loading this page all day to no avail. Everything else has been working, but not this page… Tilda Swinton is too amazing for my computer screen, clearly.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Same here. Thought it wass just me…she’s literally shutting it down.

    • http://twitter.com/Hussified Coleen

I would have paid cash money for someone to record the conversation of that photo shoot. These pictures make me want to rob a bank so I can do a full body tuck and then buy Chanel. She is the Mayoress of Fiercetown.

    • MartyBellerMask

THIS is who should be wearing Chanel. Sorry, Blake Lively.

    • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

Every single thing she’s doing is far more interesting than the runway models. Fire everybody and do an all-Tilda

    • julnyes

She nearly brings me to joyous tears. I think I need the last picture blown up poster sized so I can start building her a proper altar.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

Oh, how I covet that purple coat with the pleats. Maybe not with the bling on the shoulder, but man….that’s a great coat.

And I think I FINALLY get the Swinton love. I didn’t before, but now I am a convert.

    • justjude

6th picture down – now that is the sort of hair i was hoping to see at the Met Ball this year, a kind of fauxhawk.

    • Chuck Barthelme

She’s wearing the hell out of those clothes.

    • http://viridianpostcard.blogspot.com/ viridian61

3rd pic, close up in white – her eyes are so lovely.

    • http://twitter.com/commish24 commish24

      So that’s where Matt Smith’s hair went…..

    • RinPauler

Man, she’s the only one who can match the intensity of Karl’s previous muse like Stella Tennant. Such an ethereal beauty.

    • jen

Holy fucking shit! I am bowing down.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

I so want to see Stella Tennant and Tilda have a cage match to the death, maybe over some of that bling! It’s time for a m-effing walkoff!

    • Carly Warnock

flawless. fucking flawless. makes me actually consider Chanel as relevant.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Y’know, I generally don’t like her fashion style (please don’t ban me!), but I really love this!

    • Kate4queen

      Wow, I love that coat!

    • GTrain

    • unbornfawn

That woman sure knows how to work a camera. LOVE her. LOVE this.

    • Nonmercisansfacon

FIERCE. But I’m not going to lie, that last picture, I thought they were trolling us and put David Bowie to see if we’d notice the switch!

    • http://twitter.com/aidanboleyn Aidan B

      YES. A thousand times yes!

    • guest2visits

She really is a creature from another world. Tilda seems most at home in centuries past or far into future eons.
I love the final tartan coat and all it’s pins – but she is truly transcending as a regal, solemn swan in the white gown.

    • PeaceBang

Honest to God, I can face the weekend now. Faith restored. It’s all so very divine.

    • StillGary

love that they defined her eyes a bit. SOmeone probably lost a finger but it was worth it!

    • Anplica Fiore

She’d make one hell of a Joan of Arc. Just saying…

    • Susannah

Susannah: I think if Tilda Swinton and Lea Michele were placed next to each other, they would spontaneously combust. (Although, of course, Tilda would then rise majestically out of the fire in a pure white gown made of shards of molten glass and bald eagle feathers.)

KathrynT: that is such a beautiful image I might cry

KathrynT: i mean, because it removes Lea Michele from us

    • http://twitter.com/kitchenflails Cassidy Olsen

So much coat lust for that purple plaid. I don’t usually associate Scottish winters with the word “couture” but this is amazing.
