Taylor Swift in Beverly Hills

Posted on May 23, 2013

Here’s a perfect example of why we think it really is time for Tay to ditch the twee drag:

Taylor Swift shopping with a friend in Beverly Hills, California.

Sesto Meucci Ban Lattice Leather Woven Lace-Up Oxford

It’s because her heart clearly isn’t in it anymore.

There was a time when an outfit like this would be matched and coordinated to within an inch of its life (so to speak). There was a time when her outfits like this felt rigidly thought-out and designed to promote a very specific image. This just feels kind of half-assed and thrown together in comparison; like she’d rather be wearing jeggings, booties and a cool t-shirt. The shoes are cute but everything else feels nondescript.

Time to let this look go, Tay. Better to try something new and get it wrong than to continue doing things the old way long after you stopped loving it, right? Words to live by, dear. Now go put on something shocking.

‘sides, it makes her look 12.

  • swiss_miss

I like a lot of the individual pieces she wears, but she just always takes it way to far. Like, the same outfit with a skinny jeans would be cute, but this is saccharine.

    • AnaRoW

She’s kind of saccharine so like most of her clothes, it works for her. I guess that’s why can’t get up in arms about the twee-ness of her clothes because she’s just being herself. OTOH Carly Rae Jepson rubs me the wrong way because it’s like she’s trying to convince people she’s a bubbly teenager.

    • aeb1986

I agree. And as much as she bugs me I feel like she’s one of those people that could pull off a variety of styles because she’s both very pretty but can really pull off sexy too. I think with the right stylist she could pull off an awesome rocker chic look. She’s just gotta get the confidence to branch out!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

exactly, the blouse could feel vintage-cool with a pair of black cigarette pants or skinny jeans. Like the shoes lots.

    • drdarke

Somebody called Zooey Deschanel a “Manic Pixie Dream Slug” on the AV Club’s STAR TREK Comment Board – I think Taylor Swift just took that title from her….

  • gabbilevy

I’d like those shoes please, but at the Forever 21 price.

    • Glammie

Yeah, love the shoes. Like the sunglasses too. Actually, I don’t mind any single piece, it’s just sort of a mish-mash all together though.

      • H2olovngrl

        Are those Wayfarers?

  • StellaZafella

    On a scale of what?

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

      as in 12 years old

      • Louise Bryan

Not really. The sunglasses spoil that. It’s more like she’s pretending to be looking like a twelve year old. It’s cognitively dissonant.

        • Kimbolina

Or like a 12 year old trying on her older sister’s sunglasses and pretending to be older.

        • Spreecord

And does she ever close her mouth? I feel like I’ve spent more time looking at her teeth than her orthodontist.

  • SewingSiren

Uh Oh. Somebodies personal assistant has out dressed them. Any guesses to who?

    • marlie

That is a cute little number, isn’t it?

      • kmk05

I really want what the assistant is wearing.

      • alyce1213

Fabulous, adorable. I posted above that I think it’s a bridge between twee and sophisticated (and now I bore you by repeating myself, sorry).

        • marlie

          No need to apologize. :)

  • Meg

If she could also accompany a more grown up look with more grown up lyrics and stage performances, then I might not have to roll my eyes so much. You’re a beautiful, talented young woman, Taylor! Now just dress, write, and perform like one.

Mainly its time to ditch it because she’s no longer a tween. She’s grown up on the red carpet, the rest of the wardrobe to follow soon…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=603005248 Jeff Warhurst

I think it’s great that she dresses well. Maybe it’s not everyone’s taste, but it’s better than ripped jeans or looking like a prostitute (see: everyone else).

  • jw_ny

She (or rather her people) wants it both ways…being viewed as a tweenie girl (her target audience) and being viewed as a grownup…as seen recently in her RC looks. She’s really a viper (yup…I’m judging her based on her many past relationships/breakups) , so the tweenie girl image just comes across as fake.

    • http://www.epilonicast.net/theydontknow epilonious

I’m not sure what a viper is… but I’ll write it off as “Yet another thing that people call women to show their dis-satisfaction with said women for doing something that men do all the time… based on some sort of lethal animal to drum up almost comically inappropriate images of their danger to civilized society and sheer inhumanity” . Like Cougar or Jackal before it…

Sorry, but when Boy Pop Tarts date and have it not-work-out a bunch… they are seen as testing the waters and being a flaky as befits their age. So when Taylor Swift does it, it just seems irretrievably nasty to coin such terms despite any self admission of “judging”.

    • alyce1213

Why is she a VIPER? She’s an attractive, single young woman — why shouldn’t she date a lot, as much as she damn pleases?
      Agree with epilonious.

      • demidaemon

I don’t really care how many people she dates. That’s her business. What I do care about is that whenever she is seen with someone, the media automatically assumes this is her new beau, the information is blasted at us 24/7 until the eventual break-up, and she propagates the problem by WRITING ABOUT EVERY DAMN RELATIONSHIP SHE HAS BEEN IN. Now, when, I was her age, I was doing a similar thing, writing poetry about all my crushes and whatnot. That’s probably part of the annoyance factor. The other part comes from it constantly being blasted on the radio. Yes, she is young. Yes, she should have the freedom to express herself about it. Do I want to hear about it all the time and pretend that she is sweeter than brown sugar and honey when really many of her songs show a bit of a vindictive side? Hell no.

Sorry for the rant. I feel better now.

  • Janet B

She’s out dressed by her friend.
    Cute shoes.

  • l_c_ann

The skirt is on her crooked. That ‘center’ seam isn’t centered on any part of her her body (unless a appendix counts). The pocket opening over her appendix doesn’t make any sense.

    • Tatiana Luján

skirts sometimes turn around when you walk. I happened a lot to me with my school uniform skirt.

      • RebeccaKW

That’s my problem with this look. Her skirt looks like a uniform skirt (only shorter). I almost expected to see knee socks.

I’m fine with the shirt…with some different bottoms. The shoes don’t really go with the top half.

  • Tatiana Luján

I really like the bag and the color of the skirt.
If she had paired the outfit with a less twee shirt (like, for example, a plain white collar shirt), this would look better.

  • Emily Giovanni

I am more interested in her friend’s dress!

    • Griffinqueen

Right? I think her friend is looking much more interesting and what a cute little navy dress!

    • pattyw

I know! Seriously coveting that dress.

    • jetpackdino

      Amen! Adorable navy dress.

  • clatie

I must respectfully disagree. She drives me nuts but I think she looks great here.

    • shawnhunter

same! i’m not even a fan of hers, but i really like that blouse paired with that skirt.

  • LuisaNL

    She is so dull.

  • kat89

Is that skirt twisted so the side pocket is in the front? It looks that way to me.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Do any of you remember Cruel Intentions? She’s giving a very Kathryn Merteuil life performance. I don’t trust all that sugary goodness. It makes me wonder what that person is like behind closed doors.

    • swiss_miss

I’ve always felt that she gives the vibes of a mean girl playing a good girl, like the Rachel McAdams character in mean girls or Merteuil.

  • MilaXX

It’s a none effort and I really dislike that bag for some reason.

  • thecitysleeps

Goddamn it, I hate her, but I like her twee style. I love peter pan collars and I would wear that top with jeans myself. But I don’t have her legs so. Still hate her. Go away TayTay!

  • flamingoNW

Really? On what planet are those shoes cute? Some of the ugliest shoes I’ve ever seen….

    • Lisa Utter

They remind me of my dear departed MIL’s Naturalizers.

  • filmcricket

The proportions on this seem off, no? I think I’d like it better with a pair of skinny jeans instead of the blouse.

Everything from the neck up is great, though. Love the shades, love the perfect ponytail.

  • JP

I had those shoes in the ’80s.

I agree, she needs to drop the innocent school girl look.

    • Sara L.

I had those shoes, too! Mine were black, though. Horrible.

  • alyce1213

She really should have worn her friend’s outfit — it’s fantastic and a great bridge between twee and sophisticated.

  • CeeQ

“jeggings, booties and a cool t-shirt” – I have all of these things! I also think Tay would look very cute in this suggested outfit! Hey wait…perhaps I shouldn’t be dressing like someone almost half my age?!?!? How old is she again?? whoops….

    • marlie

Hey, if you can pull it off, do it!!

  • marlie

I hate the shoes. I like the skirt, but pair it with a different top? And she should just eliminate Peter Pan collars from her wardrobe, period.

    • Tatiana Luján

I agree 100% on the elimination of Peter Pan collars. Leave them for the kids under 7 years old.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Taylor, sweetie? You’re rich, famous, lovely and 23. Let your flesh flag fly, girl!

  • j_anson

I’d say she looks unnervingly pale (like, Goths attempt to create this skin using extensive make-up pale), but she seems to have found an equally pale person to walk behind, so maybe it’s just the light? Or perhaps Taylor secretly hangs out with Goth friends who like to dress like 12-year-old schoolgirls, but not in a sexy way?

    • starrika

Nah, you’re just looking at her too soon after looking at orange Lea Michelle.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

    I want her shoes. Badly.

  • KAO TV

yep, the friend’s outfit is way better!

  • frannyprof

Does she have a twee clause in her contract? because her friend/assistant/fellow twee-girl is doing twee a heck of a lot better than Ms. Swift.

  • carnush

This is no longer cute nor modern, and nowhere near chic. This is Urban Outfitters basement sale from two years ago. She’s better than this.

  • Patricia Gillett

Gee, Taylor Swift in a Peter Pan collar. Imagine that. There’s a rumor that the sun rose in the east today, too!

  • throwslikeagirl

Forget the two children. Who’s the hunk in the background!?

  • Dam_Angel

    She needs a little sun!

    • katiessh

i like that she’s pale. so over the skin-cancer, rolled-yourself-in-orange-tanner look

  • julnyes

Her friend? / Assistant? looks fab.

  • Sophcal

Hey, as a girl around her age who follows a lot of fashion blogs by, again, girls around her age, I’d say that this style of dressing is still very much in and appealing. I’d be interested in the general reaction to this outfit if you cut Taylor’s head off these photos and replaced it with Emma Stone’s head.

    • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

We never said this look was “out.” We said it looked like she was over it.

      • Sophcal

Whoops, sorry, my comment was meant to be in reply to other commenters, not your original post!

  • judybrowni

Mismatched separates on the sale rack of The Limited, 1984.

  • formerlyAnon

Her friend is better dressed. (I don’t think she’s carrying enough to be an assistant. Don’t they have to be able to check on things & hang on to stuff and make notes to act on later? Maybe the hand that’s out of sight has what’s needed . . .)

  • elirt

I much prefer her friend’s dress! Super cute!

  • YoungSally

The friend looks pretty interesting, though.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

All the money in the world, and she looks like she’s cosplaying a six year old. Ugh.

  • DominoEstella

I’m more interested in what her friend is wearing.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Me too! That dress is fab. Great details. Plus, with the braid she sort of looks like a really fabulous, slightly scandalous 1930s temperance advocate; like she should be singing Follow the Fold in Guys and Dolls and have Marlon Brando hitting on her. Yes? Yes.

  • blueberrypanckae

    so hipster it hurts…

  • guest2visits

Wow really off. Looks like a six year old carrying her mom’s handbag. Lose the bag, let the blouse out, and trade skirt for skinny pants and better shoes. Her friend did much better.

  • unbornfawn

Definitely past time to ditch the Twee. My eye went right to the raven haired beauty with her.

  • Trisha26

    Um…the shoes are hein.

  • Nan

I want the black (navy?) dress the chica in front of her is wearing…

  • katiessh

ya know, she’s all over celebitchy, and she actually wears pants and jeans sometimes. why do you always pick out the specifically twee outfits she wears? and also, jeggings… are you joking?

  • librarygrrl64

That bag against that skirt is giving me color-clash twitches.
