Stephen Amell at the CW Upfronts

Posted on May 17, 2013

Relax a little, Stephen. Would you like us to massage your shoulders or something? You look tense.

‘Arrow’ star Stephen Amell attends the CW 2013 Upfront Presentation in New York City.

And really; why on earth would you feel tense? Your show’s a minor hit, you have the ABS OF DEATH, and you look pretty damn cute in this suit.  You are T Lo-approved. You can unclench now.

Anyone here fans of Arrow? We tried to catch it when we remembered to, but right from the get-go, the show struck us as too mythology-heavy. We’re all for a backstory and a good ongoing mystery, but you only had to miss an episode or two to get totally lost as to what the hell’s going on. In addition, everything felt just a bit too … overwrought. Every superhero story doesn’t have to be the Dark Knight. There’s room for a little lightness in the genre. But what do we know? Like we said, the show seems to have done well for itself, all things (CW) considered. Maybe we’ll try to catch up over the summer.

Too much Mad Men. I saw his tie and I thought “BLUE AND GREEN! BLUE AND GREEN!! Who is he cheating on? It this a power struggle instead of a power suit?!”

    • gabbilevy

His character was definitely in a fraught love triangle-y cheaty thing all season 🙂 Plus the whole ‘secret identity’ kind means you’re lying to everybody, so…

      • drdarke

Let him take his shirt off and toss him some free weights – he’ll be much happier!

        …And so will we all.

    • MilaXX

He always wears a bit of green when he’s doing press for the show because The Arrow wears a green costume.

I have not watched it, though I wanted to. But I missed like the first 3 episodes, and then was lost, so I just gave up. Probably better for Mr. Amell that I don’t, as I seem to have the kiss of death. Every new show this season that I watch and like has been canceled (except for Elementary).

Well, he looks sufficiently awkward. I haven’t watched his show, but I hear that in addition to his fabulous abs, it also features love of my life Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman.) Count me in!

    • One can never have enough John Barrowman. Never!

      • What? really? John Barrowman? Dang, I didn’t know that. I caught perhaps the 2nd ep and even then had to keep hitting pause so my friend could explain what I’d missed. Still, those abs + Captain Jack? I may have to do a summer marathon myself.

      • Qitkat

Did you catch him in the episode of Scandal? One or two back from the season finale, probably a one-off. I nearly fell off my sofa when I saw him.

        • MilaXX

YES! Poor Mellie everybody is reading her for filth these days. He straight up told her he can’t make her husband love her.
I drank an entire bottle of wine watching the finale last night.

          • Qitkat

OMG! Did you even see that end twist coming?

          • MilaXX

I had heard speculation that he would be her father. So I wasn’t surprised. I bet Harrison turns out to be related to her as well.

        • Jessi03

I actually recap Scandal for tvgasm. It was all I could do not to make every picture in there one of him! I think I restrained myself to one and gif of him smooching Spike from Buffy.

  • gabbilevy

I’ve enjoyed it quite a bit, and the finale made some welcome bold choices to subvert expectations and cliches. Plus, they take just about every opportunity to have Amell shirtless. It makes some rookie stumbles along the way, but improved pretty steadily as it went.

Plus, I think he’s always that stiff — too many (ok, never too many) muscles.

  • I enjoy it. One can only watch so much “Mad Men”, “Game of Thrones”, etc.
I like the bit of mindlessness of it. Amell is actually really great in the show even beyond his abs.
I originally only started watching it because John Barrowman has a recurring role and I cannot pass up Captain Jack Harkness ever, but it’s earned it’s place on the TiVo schedule.

    • I did not know that Captain Jack was in this show! Now I MUST watch it. He’s divine, even if he doesn’t like my particular gender. Harrumph.

      • Captain Jack likes all the genders 😉 It’s John Barrowman who’s the “gold star” gay. HA!

Alex Kingston also appeared in two episodes this season. They weren’t on screen together (that I recall), but they were on set sending out pictures to make the Doctor Who fandom explode.

        • Qitkat

Hmm, John and Alex. Both divine, in my book. I may have to marathon this one over the summer. I’m dying to see what her role is in the season ending Doctor on Saturday. You had better deliver, Moffat!
          mumbles…youtube…therapeutic doses of Ten…shhhh…don’t tell anyone…guilty pleasure

          • Ten is divine. I’m not loving Matt Smith or bloody Moffatt’s running of this show.

          • Qitkat

Since I have nowhere else to say it, not wanting to participate on the super nerdy/obsessive sites, I loved tonight’s finale! Flew in the face of all my expectations. My favorite episode of the season by far. There will always be wibbly-wobbly time traveler quirks/discontinuity, and I’m sure with closer analysis, I would find some. But for the only time this season, edge of my seat, tears and laughter, and found it so very satisfying, on an emotional level. I actually want to watch it again.

  • Nicholas

The season finale was one of the best in a long time. It is still really hammy with the writing and soap opera, so if you aren’t able to tune that out, you should probably skip it.

It’s the eye candiest show on TV, though.

  • Yolanda13

I watch to see him shirtless, which is at least once per episode.

  • Kimmu

Arrow’s a fun bit of fluff, even if it’s deviated from the Green Arrow stuff I love where Ollie is a mega rich modern day liberal hippy Robin Hood.

So far incredibly amused at how they’ve handled the Speedy/Roy Harper storyline, though. It made me cackle.

  • BrianDC

I think Arrow is great. He and the supporting cast are fantastic; his abs can’t be beat; and they’ve lightened up on the mythology as the season has gone on. I would highly recommend checking it out and sticking with it to the second half of the season.

  • So, the opposite of Aaron Yoo. Hahahahaha.

  • CommenterFormerlyKnownAsR

I’m stressed out just looking at him.

    • drdarke

Want to bet he showed up dressed casual just like Yoo did, and they stuffed him into a too-tight suit before they let him out? That is not a guy happy to be standing there…in a suit…having his picture taken.

  • TropiCarla

I watched a few episodes – mostly for those spectacular ABS. I have aspirations of catching up over the summer if my 6-month old ever starts falling asleep at a reasonable time. In addition to Captain Jack, I was also excited to see the delicious, hulking Crixus (Manu Bennett) when I caught a recent episode. They certainly have cornered the market on eye-candy.

  • nannypoo

It’s hard to know exactly what to do when facing a firing squad. Stephen is demonstrating his technique here.

  • His jaw is wider than his head! Impacted wisdom teeth? Anyway, I watched a few episodes but found it all a bit overwrought. Not just too much mythology but too much mythology I didn’t give a fuck about. David Ramsey deserves better than being fucked around by Deborah Morgan but from what I saw he was still being fucked around.

  • Janet B

    Deer in headlights.
    Cute deer in headlights.

  • Puds S

I lie it, but don’t over think it. John Barrowman and Alex Kingston popped in for a bit. The finale had lots of explodes things. I was happy.

  • LipstickForPigs

If you like the DC Comic-verse, the show is incredible…nearly as incredible as this man’s body.

  • Frank_821

Yes I enjoy the show as well. I assumed the worst since it’s a CW show. Later on I found out Greg Berlanti was 1 of the show runner. He’s a got a good track record and is an experienced Film and TV writer. Yes Mr Amell has the abs of death and Barrowman is a major badass who got some indepth acting scenes in the last few episodes.

There’s also a certain level of realism to it that is tackled without being too obnoxious and there’s major comic relief thanks to the character of Felicity, a sweet and ernest tech nerd. But that’s usually the only kind on tv 😛

  • JP

Arrow is definitely worth catching up on, and I say this as a not-a-superhero-fan. I started watching it b/c I adore Paul Blackthorne (Det. Lance) in everything he does, but the rest of the show grew on me, and the finale was…wow.

I agree. Dude looks good; would it kill him to crack a smile?

  • Pennymac

Okay, the BK’s are extolling this guys shirtless endeavours. I’m gonna have to Netflix Arrow.

Nice suit. He looks like a nervous care salesman, though.

  • Chris

I still think of him as CeeCee’s crummy boyfriend from season one of New Girl. The guy who didn’t like her Christmas Gift from Jess (the fake mustache).

  • The suit bothers me. It seems wrinkled, the jacket seems too snug (or is the shape just wrong for him?), and the pants are maybe a teensy bit too loose.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I don’t love Arrow, but I like it (whilst still preferring the Green Arrow on Smallville). I will say this for y’all that are planning to play catch up over the summer …. don’t bond (watchwords from my days of Asian cinema fandom).

  • mrspeel2

Love, love, love Arrow! It’s fun escapism and Stephen is gorgeous, so please do try to get caught up over the summer, boys.

  • well, that’s … quite … a … very apparent fly. speaking of “upfronts.”

  • titaness25

Jesus. That background is hideous. It is literally all I can see, and I love me some hot mens in hot suits all hottily hot.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Wow – that’s a guy who needs a cup of chamomile in a big way.

  • Steph Wright

I just have to read Stephen Amell’s name and I shudder uncontrollably with lust.

  • quiltrx

If all that clenching was meant to keep your tie knot straight, it didn’t work, cutie.
It’s funny….I remembered seeing commercials for this show, but could never figure out when it was on or where, so I thought it got cancelled. Just disappeared down the CW hole, eh?

    • drdarke

No, it’s one of the CW’s biggest hits, @quiltrx:disqus, which is to say that it’s also a hit by NBC standards, and an acceptable performer by the real broadcast networks’.

  • Love the blue/green. He’s doing my thing.

  • jetpackdino

There’s definitely a fine line between drinking too much before an RC event and not drinking enough, but I think it’s safe to say he’s too far on the sober side.

  • Love “Arrow”! In profile, he reminds me of a hawk (that’s a good thing)! 🙂

  • barbarienne

I watch the show. It has its good episodes and its bad episodes, but overall the trend has been improvement. The first couple of eps were laughable, imo, and I admit I mostly stuck with it because (a) Green Arrow has always been one of my fave characters, and (b) lots of ABS OF DEATH, not just from Mr. Stephen, here.

It also amuses me that the aerial shots of Starling City are Philadelphia (though the street shots are Vancouver).

  • Spot on T Lo.
