Rosario Dawson in Marchesa at Cannes

Posted on May 22, 2013

We’re not feeling this one for Miss Rosario.

Rosario Dawson attends the premiere of ‘Cleopatra’ during The 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival in a Marchesa gown accessorized with a Ferragamo clutch and Avakian jewelry.

Marchesa Resort 2013 Collection/Model: Kamila Filipcikova

Avakian Haute Joaillerie Cuff Bracelet with White and Yellow Diamonds

We don’t think the puffy sleeves are really her thing, and the shape of this dress only seems to work for her from certain angles. Besides, it feels so heavy for Cannes. We were actually shocked to see this was from a resort collection. It’s got New Year’s Eve written all over it.

Certainly not a terrible look. That bracelet is gorgeous. Maybe we’d like this better if she wore her hair up. You can’t do the puffy sleeve AND the mermaid hair, we’re thinking.

Man, there have been some SUPER red lips on the RC lately, no?

I don’t know. I think it’s Dynasty Fabulous. It is rather heavy though

  • aeb1986

I think it is really flattering on her in the last shot but from the front it makes her look boxy or something…I also really dont like those sleeves

  • MilaXX

Not liking any of this together. Hate those sleeves and really hate them combined with that hair. Not crazy about the bag and the dress really isn’t the best for her figure.

  • Deedles

Miss Diana Ross would appreciate it if you return her dress!

  • ChaCha_70

Hate the hair. Think it’s ruining the look. That bracelet is the star though. Dayum!

  • MilaXX

Fellow BK’s allow me to scream a bit. The doggone kitten just chewed the heel of my new shoes!!! I thought only dogs could do this kind of damage.

  • Randy Noak

If they’d taken the sleeves off completely, this could have been gorgeous!

  • Little_Olive

No, not her dress, not the event for that dress, not the hair for that dress (or for anywhere) and no to the shiny forehead.

Also: Marchesa, please. We know you can do a shoulder rose with the fabric. It’s getting a bit Creative Sowing at the Learning Annex.

  • Janet B

Beautiful dress, but I don’t think the color is all that good on her.

    • Introspective

that’s what i think the biggest problem is. the color is washing her all the way out.

and then there’s So. Much. Dress. in this wishy washy color (especially with those alexis colby carrington sleeves).

I imagine this in a jewel tone (teal? eggplant?) and already its not so bad. start over Rosario (or really Georgina & whatever her homegirl’s name is) and try again.

      • conniemd

Agree the biggest problem is the color doesn’t match her skin tone or the red, red lipstick.

  • Little_Olive

Feeling your pain across the Globe here. Maybe an excuse to buy new ones? 😉

    • MilaXX

I just bought these Friday. 🙁 So mad I had to put her in the bathroom. Since when do cats need chew toys?

      • mjude

i am quite sure your kitten is NOT ashamed. 🙂

        • MilaXX

I wish she wish she was. I am so mad at her right now. I was planning to wear these to a formal event I have coming up.

          • OrigamiRose

Ugh, I’m sorry. I had a cat once who forced me to always remember to store my heels in boxes after one too many “furball voms” ended up inside my shoes.

Is it worth seeing if the store you purchased them from might give you a pity-discount on a replacement pair if you were to tell them what happened?

          • MilaXX

            I don’t think they will.

          • OrigamiRose

I only suggest it because I had a great Apple experience one time where I broke a device three days after getting it – entirely my negligence – and after I unintentionally burst out in tears telling them what I’d done and my terrible week overall (getting robbed), they sold me a replacement of the same model at 75% off. So now I think, you just never know – you could hit the right person on the right day who could make an unfortunate situation a bit better for you 🙂

          • MilaXX

I got them on sale at Nordstroms rack. I doubt a discount store will be that generous

          • mjude

dont let it damper your upcoming event. i know the feeling (little spoiled dog) but in the end we cant live without them. keep looking & maybe just maybe you will find a fab deal. but keep us BK’s posted!

      • twocee

My cat has chewed on anything leather since she was a kitten. I’ve lost shoes, belts, purses…you name it.

Of course she also plays fetch with a paper wad, so maybe some cats just want to be dogs?

        • MilaXX

I have never had such a chew-y, bite-y cat before. She also “nips” when she plays. Nipping at toes is another favorite past time.

  • Amy909

ahh i see that it’s from a MARCHESA resort collection…well that explains everything!

The dress isn’t doing much for her shape from the front and makes her look straight up and down.I sympathize because I’ve got a similar body shape. I tend to stay away from these straight up and down dresses that have no shape or cinching at the waist.

  • It’s very thickifying in most of the shots, bar the final one. And she’s not a thick-waisted lady. Puffy sleeves are rarely a good idea.

Gorgeous cuff. I don’t even want to know what that goes for.

  • Totally agree about this making her look boxy. And the sleeves don’t help that At All.

  • flamingoNW

It would work for me if it didn’t make her look boxy in the torso. But immediate reaction to shoulder puff was to roll my eyes…

  • jamie2348

I kinda dig the sleeves and I love the red lipstick (she has a really beautiful smile). But the rest is unflattering.

  • sugarkane105

Has there been a shortage of matte powder in Hollywood recently? I feel like I keep seeing shiny faces on the red carpet lately. It’s not a good look for anyone.

  • TheAmericaness

Pfft. I’m sure Daniel and Richard were high-fivin’ each other all the way through the design of this one.

    • CT14

  • drdarke

It’s – a gown. Yes, it’s really a bit heavy for an event in the French Riviera in the late Spring – but it’s not like it’s horrible or anything. Well, maybe wearing popovers as sleeves is….

Yeah, it looks more Oscars than Cannes – but it’s not – bad.

  • Who thought that clutch was a good idea? Fire them!

  • Griffinqueen

That’s it! The sleeves are just too bulky, but the rest is lovely. The bracelet is divine.

  • carnush

Hair up would have been better. Hate the sleeves.

  • It makes her look wide, which is silly because she has such a gorgeous figure. I do like the metallics on her, but the silhouette just isn’t doing it. 🙁

  • filmcricket

Huzzah for super red lips, that’s better than the “nude” look so many of them have been sporting. Although I’m not sure red (or that shade of it) works with the dress.

Agreed that the hair is the big problem. A sleek updo would do wonders to elevate this, even if it’s not perfect for the venue.

Please to be handing that bracelet over to me pronto.

  • AmeliaEve

Really, the whole dress is a mixed message. The jewel neckline and puffy sleeves say “demure” while the beaded fabric and body-skimming shape say “sex pot.” They are cancelling each other out.

  • appliquer

Love, love, love the bracelet. I don’t think the color works for her, and the dress makes her look wide through the middle.

  • I’m disappointed. The beadwork is gorgeous, but the dress REALLY does nothing for her figure. And I don’t dislike them, per se, but the sleeves are straight off of the dress that I wore to my 9th grade winter formal in 1990. Coincidentally, I found that dress in the back of a closet at my parents’ house a few months ago.

  • DISlike. 🙁

  • Beardslee

I also think that, unless it’s 1890 or so, those are sleeves for the under 30’s. Can’t tell you why I think so, but I do.

    • CT14

The sleeves stood out as hiddy and aging on her, to me, but then it didn’t look so bad on the model.

Those sleeves are just so 80s. I don’t think a woman with any curves should wear them anymore. If you’re a waif, maybe, but–ugh no. I hate those sleeves.

      • lonepear

I agree–I tried to figure out why I didn’t mind them on the model, and it’s because her bust is so small that the only real volume up top is the sleeves. On Rosario, the bust and the sleeves together are too much.

  • Holy Imelda Marcos!

    • alyce1213

      Nailed it, Bert.

  • julnyes

She looks lovely from the side, but it is unflattering when viewed from the front. This dress is not doing her justice.

    • l_c_ann

But for the side view, it would be a loss.

  • Mmebam

IIRC, she has rather strong shoulders. The sleeves are not helping that.

  • ballerinawithagun

Love the color on the model but not the gold. Take the sleeves off…I had to make too many sleeves like that for bridesmaids in the late 80’s early 90’s, I’m not quite ready for them yet.

  • Clueless_Jock

Imelda Marcos had the same dress.

  • It looks like one of those heavy dresses you see at Goodwill, and then your friend forces you to try it on for a funny Facebook photo.

  • Aldona Dye

It must have been hot at Cannes…everyone makeup looks like it’s sliding off their faces!

  • DiverK

This just isn’t the right shade for her either. It looks off, somehow.

  • Mary229

The bracelet is stunning and I love that bold red lip.

  • crash1212

It’s the sleeves. Not sure anybody could – or should – attempt to work a puffy-cinna-bon sleeve, ever. It is an odd look for the venue. Love the cuff.

  • decormaven

Please don’t bring back puffy sleeves. I will say this like a mantra. Puffy sleeves are of Satan and should be cast into the ring of fire.

    • My first thought as well. Please don’t tell me those absurdities have come back. Leave it to Marchesa.

  • Sally Brownson

I don’t know if it’s badly proportioned or if it just doesn’t fit right, but it’s making her look thick-waisted. Which it’s pretty obvious to everyone in the world that she’s not.

  • Waspy, rich people in a NYC soap opera New Year’s Eve. Then again, that’s what all of Georgina’s clothes look like.

  • Dynasty! Exactly!

  • Anniebet

Hmm, lots of things not quite right with this, but the one thing that bothers me is the dress gives her no waist at all in that first pic. I’m pretty sure she has one. That, the sloppy hair, off kilter makeup, and those sleeves just don’t do her justice.

  • poggi

I am so sorry. My cat is very destructive too. They are very lucky they’re so cute.

  • j_anson

I mean, who doesn’t want to look like a giant, gold-encrusted tadpole?

  • blueberrypanckae

Help us all sweet jeebus if the puffy sleeve is coming back! First the influx of peek a boo sheer…now this!

  • AlisonS

Does miss than have new gays? Did she lose her old ones? ‘Cause what ever happened to her style-wise has not been good.

  • Anne Shirley would have cut a bitch for those sleeves, but remove them from Rosario’s dress and you’ve got an “Attagirl” at least, maybe even a babyWERQ.

  • judybrowni

Oh, fuck — ’80s big puffy sleeves are back.

    I’ve been dreading that possibility.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I often feel like Marchesa gowns are wearing the actress instead of the other way around.

    • alyce1213

My impression of Marchesa gowns is that crap falls out of the sky and just lands on someone, no organic connection.

  • Mauricio González del Castillo

Those sleeves are straight up maraca-shaking Charo.

  • quiltrx

I think this could have worked much better with no sleeves and a lower neckline.
But an updo would have helped with those sleeves. It helped with my wedding gown, which had those kind of sleeves. You know, in 1995. 🙂

  • Chuck Barthelme

I think her body isn’t curvy enough for the silhouette. If it was sleeveless, it would give the illusion of shape much better, and make her look less boxy. The way it’s fitting her is only accentuated by the sleeves, which just continue the boxy illusion. She’s working it as best she can though. It’s just that the dress seems to be working against her. Because I KNOW she is gorgeous.

  • Coco Cornejo

She looks like a beauty show contestant in the Phillipines.

  • sweet_potato

I hate the dress, 80’s puffy sleeves, gold sequins and a fishtail is just a bridge too far.

  • frederieke

Those sleeves look like my mother’s bridesmaid dress from the 80’s I found in her closet…

  • Isabel

    drown this dress!

  • bd73

so unflattering. her hips are too narrow for this gown. the sleeves make her so top heavy. the length also works against her build.

  • Serving Imelda Marcos circa 1969 realness

  • demidaemon

I think she needed a belt, at least. From certain angles, it tends to make her look very straight, when it obviously shouldn’t.

  • tereliz

That last shot is beautiful, but all other angles are kind of problematic. The hair is little too undone to pair with such a formal gown, but the skirt is wonderful. The biggest problem I have is that the color is just not saturated enough and it’s making her look sallow when she has such a bright complexion!

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Loose the puffy sleeves and give her face a pat down with some matte powder and shed look 100% better.
