Rihanna in Mary Katrantzou in NYC

Posted on May 01, 2013

Way to pick three things that absolutely don’t go together, Ri.

Rihanna heading to dinner in New York City in a Mary Katrantzou butterfly print top paired with a Givenchy pouch and Tom Ford sandal boots.

Mary Katrantzou Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Charon Cooijmans

Givenchy Spring 2013 Madonna Print Pouch

Tom Ford Spring 2013 Strappy Buckled Sandal Boot

The boots, the bag, and the top really don’t belong in the same outfit at all. get rid of the accessories and this is the start of a really good look. We love that top. It looks fabulous on her and we support the idea of pairing it with shorts. But everything else she’s got on gives off the whiff of a manic episode, in which she tore through her closet, grabbing at things.

The shoes are awful. Like some horrid torture device Mr. Bates would wear.

    • drdarke

I think I last saw those boots in a fetish magazine, @SewingSiren:disqus – and I hated them then too.

As for the rest…? Can I get back to you all after my eyes stop bleeding…?

    • And would one need a lady’s maid (or whatever one who would wear that sort of thing would employ) to get them on?

      • SewingSiren

I have this gruesome image of what ol’ Bates leg looked like when he took the “cure” brace off his leg.

      • It looks like the buckles are fixed except the top 2, the boots zip up in the back.

  • DeborahJozayt

Whoever said Tom Ford sandal boots were meant for Rhianna is totally pro.

  • I hate everything, but those sandal boots make my eyes itch, burn and bleed.

It doesn’t matter they have a Tom Ford tag, they should be burnt anyways.

  • TheAmericaness

Well, there goes my last pair of clean underwear for the day.

  • BeeBeauNYC

It must take an hour to get those boots on.

  • Introspective

so Rih is rocking the top & shorts, and the bag as off as it is could have gotten a pass. but the shoes are aggressively shitty. and awkward looking.

Tom Ford needs to never be allowed to make women’s shoes. seriously.

    • TheAmericaness

They look like something they force guys to wear at Gitmo. They are torture devices – and NOT in a sexy way.

  • I hated those boots when Anne Hathaway wore them. I should hate this but I kinda like it. Only on Rihanna.

  • Sadie-Ann

Those are sexy robot legs, they terrify me.

The shirt is sort of cute?

  • decormaven

Those boots need to be retired to the Ambulatory Surgery Hall of Fame.

  • I completely understand that tetish gear is slowly being incorporated into the mainstream. That said, those THINGS on her legs are grotesque, and unflattering to boot.

    • “To boot”….hah!

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

      Ba-dum-bum! *cymbal*

  • shirab

I don’t understand those boots. They look like ill-conceived prosthetics. With dangerous heels.

    • same thought here. The first thing which came to mind was “fake leg”

  • The boots look great on her. And only her. And that’s less because of the design and more because she hit the genetic Pick Six. But they do not look great with the crazyshirt, which I also love, but not here.

  • GorgeousThings

Those boots are abhorrent, but I like the top, especially at the shorter length.

    • Adriana_Paula

      Abhorrent is the exact word.

  • Those shoes are horrible. They look very Cyberman-crossed-with-full-body-straight-jacket.

I do like the top better as a top than as a dress or whatever it’s supposed to be on the model. But god, too much of a muchness in this look.

  • hughman

Those “sandal/boots” are a Helmut Newton photograph waiting to happen.

  • The black boots Anne Hathaway wore were much better than this nude pair.Love the shirt. The rest is just cray. Not even Rihanna can pull of that level of cray.

  • Nikko Viquiera

    scroll down fugly.

  • Take off those boots, burn them, and THEN let’s talk about the rest of the outfit.

  • Imasewsure

I can’t imagine those boots ever looking good in that color… guess I could have stopped before typing “in that color”… love the top and shorts on her though

    • rajf

The concept is not my favorite, but as Kiltd said fetish wear is going mainstream. It’s the medical equipment/ace bandage flesh tone that puts them over the creepy, Hannibal Lecter edge.

  • mjude

barf. those boots are just stupid

  • Melizmatic

I just cant with those abominable heels.

It’s like ‘Steam-Punk’ meets “Pretty Woman”, gone horribly awry.

  • Trisha26

    I like her hair.

  • It looks like she has Ace bandages wrapped around her legs. Those shoes/boots/sandals are a hot mess and a mega-fail.

  • jilly_d

Those boots were hideous in black, but in nude they are absolutely the ugliest things in the galaxy. Harumph.

  • Janet B

    Cute shirt.

  • Sarah

It *might* have helped if the boots weren’t caucasian flesh-toned. They really recall some sort of horrid skin strip it-puts-the-lotion-in-the-basket type of thing, with added harware. They wound me. Hateration in full effect.

    • Chartreusite

agreed. in a different color (perhaps a stronger and brighter one) it would feel like a cohesive thought, if not an entirely stylish one.

    • Kimbolina

I’m trying to decide if the the boots would look better on someone who’s skin tone matched the color…

      • Sarah

No. They would still look like leg-traps. I agree with Chartreusite, though, maybe in a non-flesh tone that was brighter it would at least look like more fun and less creepy torture basement.

        • demidaemon

I don’t know. If it were a brighter color, I would just think BDSM clown, which is nightmare fodder, quite frankly. They would go better with her current outfit, yes. The design itself would still need to die in a blaze of hellfire and pay my therapy bills.

          • Sarah

Yeah, not better, but less clashy, was all I could muster for an improvement. I agree – hellfire would just about do it.

  • Awwww. She’s like little Forrest Gump. Once her legs are stronger, she’ll be able to run across America.

  • barbarienne

But I’m glad to see those Tom Ford boots in action. They’re doing exactly what I feared they would around the knees. Those are not boots for walking around in. They are strictly for remaining in one place.

  • Lauren Frankel

Damn, those shoes look like the knee brace I am wearing after my ACL surgery.

  • Kimbolina

Boots are fug. Her hair is pretty here.

  • Pants_are_a_must

So wait, Tom Ford is still under the illusion he can design shoes?

    Also, no.

  • Candigirl1968

The boots look like the knee braces my grandfather wears when he plays basketball, fused to a pair of my heels.

  • lobsterlen

    Strappy Buckle Sandal Boots.
Let us ponder why those four words should never be brought together to describe one pair of shoes.
I fear bringing those 4 words again would open the gates of hell and bring upon us raining frogs, locusts and drought.

  • Why didn’t Tom Ford just call the line the “Prosthetic Limb Collection?”

  • MyrtleUrkel

I like the top, but the sandal boots look like leg braces with heels.

  • Are those boots supposed to look like prosthetic devices, or perhaps braces? If so, well done… but I don’t think that was the idea, somehow.

  • Hahaha, you guys are ridiculous. What does “go together” even mean, anyway?
I think she looks amazing, regardless of how disparate the items are from one another. She’s getting dressed like a modern woman, and it’s refreshing, I feel.

    • “What does “go together” even mean, anyway?”

Oh, honey. If you have to ask the question …

    • News flash, Ladies: feel free to wear clunky black pumps with all those flowing summer dresses. Au revoir, Go Together!

  • stubbornthoughts

Can we even call those boots? Looks more like prosthesis, if you ask me.

    Cute top, though.

  • thecitysleeps

The shoes are hideous with anything. They shouldn’t have been invented and sold as ‘sandals’. Tom Ford, I’m disappoint. Riri is fabulous though!

    • I’m thinking it took at least an hour for her minions to buckle her in.

  • mrspeel2

The shoes remind me of NHL goalie pads and/or Dominatrix gear!

  • LilyPad

Mama said they was magic shoes. They could take me anywhere.

  • Cathy S

The top is great. The boots are godawful.

  • kimmeister

The print on that pouch looks super creepy.

  • snarkykitten

were those shoes inspired by medical supplies? christ on a bicycle

  • PastryGoddess

Hathaway couldn’t make those shoes work, Rhianna can’t make those shoes work. Maybe we should send these off to Dame Helen, betcha she’d rock the shit out of them

  • No to the boots. Yes to the top and especially pairing them with shorts. But those boots…just plain silly.

  • when did Rhianna have knee replacement surgery?

  • Look like knee gaskets for an injury!

  • demidaemon

I can’t with these leg brace boots, especially in nude. They need to die, stat.

  • jetpackdino

I wanna see those boots on a big, hairy, sweaty trucker.

  • alyce1213

I have to say it every time I see one — please make these hideous prints go away!
What a bunch of sheep designers can be.

  • Those shoes really disappoint me Tom Ford. Terrible!

  • Anniebet

Hate the top. Like the bag. Can’t even articulate my feelings re the monstrosity Tom Ford has perpetrated on a gullible batch of females silly enough to actually wear that crap on their feet and legs. That said, it seems fitting that RhiRhi is wearing them. Meow.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

“Sandalboot” is on oxymoron. (And those are very Forest Gump hooker) The butterfly top is nice.

  • formerlyAnon

Those boots (term used loosely)! And what an interesting color leather to choose to wear them in – the better to emphasize the resemblance to orthopedic devices, I suppose.

  • Contralto

Those boots look like that thing Mr. Bates wore to straighten his leg.

  • pookiesmom

Scrolldown fug! I love everything except those awful, awful boots.

  • Mimi

Boots look like the poor child had polio.

  • kathrineb

I don’t know if I can tolerate the boots but the whole look is very ‘Rihanna’. The top suits her.

  • I like everything–even the boots (they would be better in black)–but just not together.

  • LaSylphide

Well, if she gets bored, she can mail herself someplace more interesting.

  • MissAnnieRN

Those boots don’t work on anyone. They belong in a high end BDSM store.

  • Rand Ortega

If the boots (?) had been black, it would have been a WERQ for me. Don’t hate me, fellow BK’s & PUF’s.

  • i love her lipstick!
her entire make-up and hair, for that matter.
    the top is cute.
the boots… are really on the edge, but i think i kinda like them.
but there are better way to style them, for sure.

  • guest2visits

Top and shorts are great for her – missed opportunity for a different pair of boots, or sandals.

  • julnyes

Everything but the shoes looks pretty great.

  • H2olovngrl

I thînk I hate the clutch even more than the boots.
