Nicole Kidman in Dior Couture at Cannes

Posted on May 16, 2013

Clear the carpet, peasants. Miss Lady is walking.

Nicole Kidman attends the Opening Ceremony and ‘The Great Gatsby’ Premiere during the 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival in a Christian Dior couture strapless gown paired with Jimmy Choo pumps.

Christian Dior Spring 2013 Couture Collection/Model: Carolin Loosen (ELITE)

Yeah, she’s in full on Princess Grace Barbie mode right now. We would expect no less from her.

Y’know, it has to be said… we kinda think this dress on most other ladystars in her age range would have us saying “Girl, that’s not your dress” and suggesting she ship it off to some starlet half her age. Not that it’s too youthful in a trendy or sexualized way; just that this kind of precious pretty doesn’t always work for a lot of ladies over the age of 25 or so. It’s got “Fanning sister” or Emma Watson written all over it. But Nicole’s a PhD-level dress-wearer, so it’s a moot point. She can make things work that mere mortals wouldn’t even bother trying.

We’re not super-crazy about the shoes, which seem a little focus-pulling – and by the way, does she ever wear open-toed shoes or sandals? And we think her hair looks a little odd from the back, but these don’t really detract all that much from the overall look. She’s gorgeous.

Love it! So glad she didn’t go with a nude shoe ( which would be the unfortunate go-to in most cases!) The color shoe/nails/lip is playful, but not too youthful. She is class !

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Agreed. Most would have gone for nude, or silver I’m sure. I think it works well.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

Oh, I am so sick of nude shoes, I can’t even tell you. So I’m not just glad she didn’t do a nude shoe, but I’m very glad she did THIS shoe, because it’s cute and it’s just perfect.

      • TheAmericaness

Agreed!!!! I’m glad for that shoe color. When I saw the promo for this post on FB last night, I couldn’t see the shoes and I was thinking “Dear baby Jesus, please don’t let her be wearing nude or sparkly/clear shoes!”

        • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

Exactly what I thought, too. Great shoe choice.

      • http://twitter.com/TeeceTorre Teece Torre

Completely agree! The shoes really make the outfit.

    • gorghast

I know some people who were at the Cannes party last night. She’s jaw-droppingly stunning in person.

I actually do like the shoes. I’ve liked all her footwear at Cannes so far.

      • http://twitter.com/TeeceTorre Teece Torre

        So do I!

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Ballet length is a hard thing to make work. She does, in spades. Also, the polished looking hair and makeup is the perfect note to balance the dress. What I will say about the shoes is, they actually FIT! But that pick is a bit much.

      • Beardslee

It shows how low our expectations are that correctly fitting shoes is worthy of comment, but I noticed that too! Nicole Kidman dresses very precisely and that’s one of her great strengths, I believe. As a rule, her clothes suit her AND THEY FIT.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Now it must also be said, that tall as she is, she is far more likely to accurately fit the sample size clothes and shoes she is sent. But ladystars, take note. See what happens when everything fits right?

      • MoHub

She’s one of the few non-models who has the height to pull off that length.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Zzzzzzactly. She is runway model height, and consequently most of what gets sent to her is likely to fit. Plus she has always had elegant posture.

    • xmixiex

SUH-NAPS. i do like the shoes. her face looks much softer too, beautiful.

    • DinaSews

I loved this look as soon as I saw it. She really looks very much like a Barbie Doll in that first picture.

    • Jonquil

The proportions aren’t working for me. I think the tall hair only adds to the effect that she had a sudden growth spurt while wearing that dress.

      • AndresB

Couldn’t agree more: Ever so slightly distorted body proportions. Irritating combined effect of the hairdo, the shoes and maybe the petticoats – I believe the skirt is meant to be poufier, it’s a heavyweight on her compared to the model.
        The dress itself is beautiful.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

This is gorgeous! Agree on all points, but this is NK at her best! The colors are working 1000%!

      • lovelyivy

Agreed with this- this is the first time in forever with her that there hasn’t been something wrong distracting me from the rest of the look- hair, dress, shoes, even her face (which looks soft and mobile) are all on point.

    • Tatiana Luján

The shoes look cheap, but she looks amazing.

      • mommyca

I got the same impression about the shoes…

    • MaryAtRealityTea

I don’t love the shoes but if she was going for a Grace effect, they channel the 50′s/Hitchcock style pretty well. Overall the look is striking and lovely, but I kept thinking she was January Jones. Also her newly unbotoxed face is looking stunning and fresh! Moveable facial features never go out of style.

    • miagain

My inner 8 year old is jumping up and down….
      It’s a beautiful dress….

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Her confidence is what always pushes her over the edge with fashion. Nails it. Every. Time.

      • http://twitter.com/TeeceTorre Teece Torre

        Agreed!

    • Sally Brownson

I think the shoes serve to make the pinks in the dress stand out. Notice that when the model is wearing yellow shoes, the yellow parts stand out more. She looks fantastic.

      • http://profiles.google.com/dorothymichael Dorothy & Michael n/a

I thought the same thing. Maybe she could have worn shoes in the same color a shade or three lighter. The dress is all kinds of amazing. I truly love it!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Austen-Jane/100002245814326 Austen Jane

      Fancy apron!

    • shirab

What does the runway model have on her feet? Yellow pumps covered with flesh-colored toeless tights? Flesh-colored boots with yellow pointy toes?

      • Folk Devil

Maybe the shoes with the clear plastic sides? If they are, this is the ugliest version yet…

      • http://profiles.google.com/melantha.chimera Eileen Duffy

Flesh colored boots with yellow toes.

        • siriuslover

I know, I couldn’t figure it out. It’s almost like they are calf-high (or higher, flesh colored boots with yellow toes as Eileen says above, but I’d like to know for sure and who the designer is. TLo, help us!

    • Diego!

She looks stunning! I loved it! And Thank God, a star who wears shoes in her size and not a size bigger! Go Nicole!!! :D

    • pattyw

I want to marry this dress. Nicole is a knock out.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

      Pristine.

    • lamamu

The severe-ish hairstyle is what allows her to wear a young-ish dress without looking silly. PhD level dress wearer, indeed.

      • AmeliaEve

I was actually thinking that the hair has a bit of a Madame Pompadour quality, which goes well with the shape of the dress. Is it Princess Grace or Versailles? And I love the shoes. It works with the ombre aspect of the dress, lighter in the hips, brighter at the hem, brightest in the shoes.

But Ms. Kidman has now reached the point in cosmetic surgery where her face no longer matches her hands. I like how the manicure picks up the shoe color, but her hands look so much older than the rest of her now.

        • lamamu

Oh, I know…the hands! The Body Shop has a great mango body butter that would fix her right up.

          • mommyca

this is to show you that you can botox your face as much as you want, but still they haven’t invented anything for the hands…

            • oohsparkley!

I’ve heard they can inject fat (or something) into the hands to plump them up. I bet they can lazer away age spots too. I feel like my hands look older than my face too and I haven’t had anything done.

        • j_anson

Yeah, I briefly thought it was from that Marie Antoinette collection Chanel did a while back, although I’m glad to see it’s not because I hated that collection, but I like this dress.

    • Tee

That dress is STUH-NING! I’m fine with the shoes. Really like the lip color. My only, tiny quibble is that a nice small piece of jewelry holding the pony tail together would have made her look flawless. Kids, don’t try this at home because this look is for the truly stunning only.

      • ballerinawithagun

Didn’t see your comment, I just replied to someone with the same thought. Yes, a little something to cover the elastic(?) would have been perfect. Dior or Nicole didn’t have a tiny brooch just lying around? I like the color of the shoes but not the sheen.

        • Tee

With all of those resources you would think someone would have been able to get their hands on a diamond or two?

    • schadenfreudelicious

The guy gazing up at her in the first pic wants the name of Tom Cruise’s lift maker ASAP..

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Victor-Beiramar-Diniz/100000152390012 Victor Beiramar Diniz

      serene highness snaps miss K!

    • Judy_S

Love everything except the hair. which is I guess too Barbie for my tastes. Her face is already so long and thin that it doesn’t need elongation.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

Absolutely beautiful. I wish I could do something interesting like that with a pony tail.

    • Buffy

I prefer the shoes from the runway or maybe silver, but these aren’t hiddy. I love that this dress reminds me of stained glass but it’s still light and says spring

    • Lesley

loved that dress on the runway and i’m so happy to see it on Nicole Kidman. all these shorter girls try to make this length work but it needs someone tall and statuesque to rock it. absolute perfection.

    • KateMaryC

This actually turned my computer-looking frown into a smile. She made me smile. Love the length of the skirt.

    • alyce1213

I love everything about this — the dress, hair, makeup, shoes (they fit!).

This dress was made for her. A WERQ.

    • prettybigkitty

      Brava! Golf claps.

    • Sara Brams-Miller

      Her makeup is gorgeous.

    • Snailstsichr

Love the dress on her love the shoes, too. She’s bringing the sunshine!

    • hyperionic

This looks like a dress a 3 year old girl would design with crayons.

    • CT14

That dress does have “Fanning sister” written all over it, but we’d be praising them for using a little color.

      Nicole is awesomesauce.

    • Kate

      One thousand yeses!

    • appliquer

I love it! I think it would be a WERQ if she’d used a different shoe – but at least for once the shoes fit!

    • http://profiles.google.com/melantha.chimera Eileen Duffy

Don’t like the dress. Too stiff. And her hair never looks flattering anymore; I think she needs bangs of some sort.

    • http://twitter.com/SingingPhoenixD Jennifer Bober

I love the fact that she’s gone back to something closer to her natural hair color. The slightly darker with hints of strawberry blond suits her so much better than the washed out pale color she had for a while.

The dress is amazing and she looks fantastic in it! The shoes aren’t too bad, but I think they’d look better in a slightly paler color to keep from pulling from the amazing dress.

      • Tatiana Luján

I totally agree with you about the hair color.

    • lrober03

This is making me realize that tea length dresses can actually work! But I guess they need some volume to look good.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I’ve noticed before that Nicole always seems to wear shoes that fit — do you suppose she <> wears her OWN shoes on the RC? Do any of the lady stars? I know if I had to stand, wearing ill-fitting shoes (especially sky-high heels), for very long I would look glummer (more glum?) than Kristen Stewart.

      • alyce1213

        Two possibilities:
        1) the sample size that stars are given by their stylists actually fit her
        or
        2) being very tall, she has large feet and can’t get into sample size shoes, so she buys her own.

In either case, kudos because the shoe fits.

      • gorghast

I’ve read that she actually buys the vast majority of her clothes and accessories; they aren’t loaned or gifted to her as is the common practice for most female stars.

        • IMNAngryLiberal

That’s very classy of her — I’ve always been impressed when I read about the few stars who decline to participate in the swagfest that is celebrity.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

Her face looks flawless, and that dress is beautiful. Very Cannes appropriate.

    • http://www.facebook.com/bert.keeter Bert Keeter

Agree…shoe to corporate for this girly look!

    • 3boysful

Grace Kelly was my first reaction seeing these photos. Gorge. I like how the hair is a little more modern by being a sleek pony rather than an updo.

      • ballerinawithagun

I love the hair also. I just wish there was a little something covering the elastic(?) on the ponytail. The look is so unexpected when she turns since there is a bump and sleek on the sides you’re expecting a French twist, but no, it’s a pontail.

    • RussellH88

I don’t want to come off as mean when I say this, but I wish she would realize that she looks so much better when her face has settled and not when she’s snatched back for days, because she looks lovely here.

    • carnush

      Beautiful!

    • http://dorothydamage.wordpress.com/ Dorothy Damage

I normally don’t like her style at all, but I think she looks fresh and lovely here. And I quite like her hair from the back, odd, but in a good way.

    • Pennymac

This is a WERQ for me. I am fully prepared to use poetic licence as a BK to J’Adore this look. Pink shoes! PINK, y’all! Not nude/silly putty/cloven hooves! Hot Dayum!

    • MilaXX

I love the whole look. Even her face looks more human. Princess Grace realness indeed.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

She bugs me, but she looks great here. That dress is pretty amazing. Agree on the shoes, but at least she’s not falling out of them.

    • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

Utterly jaw-droppingly fantastic. I saw a photograph of this elsewhere; it was pouring rain and someone was holding an umbrella over her head and it was AVEDONESQUE.

    • Corsetmaker

She looks stunning. And the work on that dress… so beautiful! looks like Lesage have been kept busy!

    • ballerinawithagun

      Amazing Fabric!

    • http://twitter.com/connectinglines Me Again

I think you meant Emma Watson.

    • theecstaticflash

She looks stunning from head to almost toe: definitely prefer the model’s.

    • werika

This is too Stepford Wives for me to like. Wrong dress for the venue.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000905542323 Rhonda Shore

I LOVE/LOVE/LOVE this dress and have always been a fan of tea length!!! She looks exquisite. Don’t love the shoes but prefer them to those silly putty shoes everyone else wears. (Maybe she doesn’t wear sandals cause she has weird toes?)

    • decormaven

The beadwork on that gown is amazing. She is pulling this look off in style. And praise the heavens she’s not wearing a putty pump!

    • SewingSiren

      Stunning.

    • kayleymaybe

Ugh, every time I see her lately all I see is Stepford Wife. I mean, she looks great and all, but she just seems so…plastic.

    • jetpackdino

Gorgeous. If a little songbird perched on her shoulder and deer approached her to snuggle, and a ray of sunshine came down from the sky to show her the way, I would not be surprised. I know that might sound like I’m being sarcastic, but I’m not. She looks beautiful.

    • Stubenville

Just can’t get with the length – it looks okay on the model but awkward on NK.

      (And her hands look OLD!)

      • jetpackdino

Her hands aren’t the hands of an ingenue, but they don’t look bad. I hate it when actresses of a certain age wear ugly gloves to avoid the “your hands look old” criticism. I wanna see George Clooney feel compelled.

    • MoreShoes

I like all her outfits in Cannes so far. The picture is perfect, hair, makeup, dress, shoes. I love the pop of colour in the shoes.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

LOVE the dress, LOVE the shoes, love everything about her look! And you know what makes me utterly giddy? That she showed up for “The Great Gatsby” premiere in an outfit that CLEARLY plugs her own “Princess Grace” movie. Nicely done – she looks amazing, yet she totally upstaged the actual movie she showed up for!

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

      Lovely.
The shoes in the model photo really perplex me.

    • http://twitter.com/SillyGrrlJen Silly Grrl

It’s so weird how her new face finally settled in over the last couple of years. NOW STOP MESSING WITH IT.

    • flamingoNW

Wow, stunning. And for once, someone who knows how to get flawless movie star hair, compared to a lot of these messes.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Love, love, LOVE this. She looks breathtakingly, and ethereally beautiful. Brava.

    • http://marshmallowjane.com/ marshmallowjane

This is the best she has looked (to me) in a long time. The dress is stunning in a quiet, detailed way. Very delicate. Plain, but beautiful. I love her whole look.

She might put a few hours in the gym to tighten up her back. Just sayin’.

    • Patricia Gillett

The dress is so stunning that I am willing to overlook the structural/fit issues in the back. I like the dramatic hair with this too. The shoes need to die. Too bright and too shiny for this dress.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1582777135 Melanie K. Morgan

I think she looks perfect and wonderful.

    • Sara__B

      Yep. Gorgeous.

    • Tracy_Flick

I disagree that the shoes are focus-pulling. They’re pretty plain, and the print is so interesting…. She looks fab.

    • Julie

Fierce as hell. I love this.

    • deathandthestrawberry

I think she looks lovely. The best I remember her looking in some time. (Not that she ever looks bad, but sometimes she looks a bit stepfordy.)

    • stubbornthoughts

Grade A movie star right there.

    • http://twitter.com/luvsblind22 Essie Atienza

Love that lip color on her. She looks so pretty.

    • http://twitter.com/richiXcore Richard

IDK about the shoes, but the dress is perfect for her. This might come off as a read (it kind of is) but this is the most natural her face has looked in a long time. It makes her look a lot younger than she usually looks.

I wish the hair was a normal up-do. That pony tail is making my skin itch.

    • another_laura

Love it. Want the whole look. Pink shoes may be a quibble, especially in that they clash with the carpet, but it’s working for me.

    • Belvane

That black gown that is walking away in the model shot made me go back and look at the collection. The front of the dress didn’t grab me at the time, but the total gown is stunning. Oh, right, this is about Nicole. She is stunning too. As usual.

    • Rand Ortega

Saw this yesterday & gasped. It’s stunning. Full freakin’ stop. That’s head to toe Movie Star.

    • random_poster

Elegant and classy. I love this!

    • CommentsByKatie

Love it. She’s one of the few ladystars that I love to see in a tea length dress. When she’s having a good day, she can do Dior like no one else. Brava, NIcole!

    • http://www.facebook.com/conysoledad Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

“It’s got “Fanning sister” or Emma Watson written all over it.”

Honestly? I think it’s too much dress for the likes of them. The wearer doesn’t need to be young/youthful and thin, but also classy. Well done, Nic!!

      • l_c_ann

Yes, exactly. Fannings or Watson have not earned this dress. Nicole graces the dress and makes us want it (and to be her.)

    • Anniebet

What a gorgeous, intricate gown… must have made 14 seamstresses go blind! Oh, wait.. that was back when they sewed by candlelight. Anyhoo, she’s to die for, plastic shoes and all. She prolly gives the best red carpet of anyone out there today.

    • hotpaprika

Nice shoes, great lipstick, wrong nail polish (too warm).

    • Cz

Love the hair. Love the shoes. Love the dress.

Love that she is starting to lay off on the botox/fillers. I like naturally ageing NK more than wax figure NK.

    • jw_ny

Gorgeous, but definitely should have gone with a metallic sandal.

    • e jerry powell

Miss Thing is walking, but her face still ain’t moving.

For a second I thought she’d had the overskirt taken off, which I thought was kind of cute, but then I noticed that she’d just de-poufed it, which is tolerable; a lot less Princess Barbie. Smart call.

    • http://twitter.com/aStudiobytheSea a Studio by the Sea

The skirt makes her look fat. ‘Nuff said.

    • MissAmynae

Love it all. This dress needed someone like her. I even like the shoes- keeps it from going Granny.

She has dancer’s feet, so doesn’t wear a ton of open-toed shoes.

    • Cathy S

Love it. Not crazy about the hair, but she looks fabulous.

    • IAmJ

She looks gorgeous. One of my favorite looks from her.

    • OrigamiRose

Agree with everything you said – gorgeous dress, hair is a little wonky from the back, and the shoes really do distract from the pretty.

    • frannyprof

      She’s back! Love this!

    • formerlyAnon

The DRESS is gorgeous! Thanks for the close-up pictures! She doesn’t let it wear her and looks good.

I think the skirt should be a couple of inches shorter on her, and I hate the back of her hair. To me that just looks like she had to leave the hairdresser’s chair with the updo half done.

    • E. D.

      Love it!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ernie-Guzman/1587035573 Ernie Guzman

      She has man hands.

      • Cz

She doesn’t. She’s just older. That’s what happens when people get older.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ernie-Guzman/1587035573 Ernie Guzman

Yes, I suppose you’re right. It’s just such a contrast when the rest of her looks like she’s made out of porcelain.

    • MartyBellerMask

      That is one amazing dress.

    • rkdgal

Makeup (particularly the lip color) is fabulous! She looks amazing.

    • http://twitter.com/TeeceTorre Teece Torre

Love this dress, so perfect for spring. And those shoes! Amazing. She looks lovely.

    • http://twitter.com/Sugarbeetle Sugarbeetle

I don’t mind the closed toe shoes. Maybe she doesn’t want to risk a Julianne Moore situation.

      • http://twitter.com/DuBey2 Marie Fessler

Please share. What WAS the Julianne Moore situation?

        • http://twitter.com/Sugarbeetle Sugarbeetle

TLo has it in another post today while she was in Cannes. Her pinky toes are sticking out of her sandals. It just looks painful and odd. She couldn’t find a pair that fit her toebed?

    • CeeQ

Loving this from the front but I’m not so sure that the length of the skirt is working for me – makes it seem like she has twigs for legs. But maybe that’s the point? From the back the deconstructed ponytail is pulling my focus. The shoes are ugly.

    • H3ff

Do you mean Emma Watson, by any chance? (I ALWAYS get her and Emma Roberts mixed up, myself)

    • http://twitter.com/MichelleRafter MichelleRafter

Her face is flawless — but did you notice her hand? That is the hand of a normal 45 year old, wrinkles and all.

    • jmorino08

This is glorious! And can we all praise Jesus that those foot coverings on the model (tights? boots? paint?) stayed on the runway?!?

    • LaSylphide

That dress is beyond gorgeous, and I love that mid-calf length. And major snaps for wearing shoes that don’t look three sizes too big. And bye the bye, what happened to ‘The Vinyl Face of Nicole Kidman’? Did she have a Botoxectomy? Her face looks so…normal. Beautiful head to toe (would have liked a different shoe color, though).

    • http://www.facebook.com/NicoleLittle1 Nicole Little

I have never seen a better matched dress to wearer color palette. Nobody else should EVER wear that dress. She owns every copy in existence.

    • http://twitter.com/DuBey2 Marie Fessler

Perfection. She’s why we watch red carpet shows.

    • quiltrx

This is a WERQ for me!

    • akprincess72

When she looks good, she looks very good. LOVE the makeup!
