Mindy Kaling on Jimmy Fallon

Posted on May 17, 2013

We sympathize with the lady stars on talk shows. You have to find a dress that looks just as good sitting down as it does when standing. Normally, the gals err on the side of a dress that looks good standing and wind up sitting through an interview with their hand clamped to their thigh to prevent skirt slippage and their stomachs held in because the dress is so tight.

Mindy seems to have gone in the other direction.

‘The Office’ star Mindy Kaling makes an appearance on the ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’ show.

This dress looks really cute sitting down and considerably less so when she’s walking out. In fact, it’s a funny thing; we’d normally say a dress as somewhat shapeless as this practically requires a belt. But most ladystars would rather die than wear a belt that cuts them in half the second they sit down.  In the end, we think she made a pretty smart choice. She knew she’d spend 90% of this appearance seated, so she went for the “sitting down” dress. The color and print look fantastic on her. We’re gonna give this one a thumbs up, despite the quibbles.

We cannot, however, sign off on those horrid shoes.

      The shoes ruin it.
Also, I feel like some sort of long chunky black necklace might have broken up the pattern in a slimming way both for standing up and sitting down. But I understand not wearing something that one might fidget with (I play with my jewelry way too much, so I imagine that wouldn’t be good in an interview).

Yes, this cries out for a long necklace

You rarely see prominent necklaces on talk shows because the stars need to be miked and you can’t have something thumping up against it every time you shift in your seat.

            Shades of Lina Lamont!

          • SugarSnap108

I learn so many behind-the-scenes tidbits from you two! The more you know….

          • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

            That makes sense.

      • mila_8

On her NPR interview she had some interesting ideas on what women love to wear that men hate- one of the items was the chunky necklace. Sequins and wedge shoes also made the list.

I don’t like how the shoes cut off her legs, but I love this dress on her.

Quite possibly some of the ugliest and most ill flattering shoes I have ever, ever seen. Ever.

      • MilaXX

then you haven’t seen the sandals Kim K wore a few days ago. I thought my feet hurt looking at Julianne Moore’s struggle shoes, but these were so much worse.

          Bwahahaa
I did see those, I blamed her narcissistic delusions and failure to acknowledge her beach ball sized preggers feet, rather than the shoe itself.

    • frannyprof

Christ almighty, those shoes are atrocious.

    • Scimommy

Interestingly, to me the shoes look better when she is standing. Maybe she compromised and chose a sit-down dress and stand-up shoes?

S’alright. What I don’t get is why do lady stars never choose pants for a sit-down interview. Are their legs extremely sensitive or allergic to fabric too close to the skin?

      • RebeccaKW

I think it has something to do with their perception of ‘dressy.’ Like, when I was growing up, when you ‘dressed up’ you wore a dress or a skirt. I also think it has to do with features-a lot of women love their legs, that’s what they want to show off. That’s my 2 cents.

    • Sara

Mindy is wearing a belt here. It’s skinny, but it’s there.

    • Nicole Chubb

Like Mr. Cumberbach, I adore her no matter what. Go Mindy!

      • Claudia

I know, right?! I instinctively love her. I think its her little voice…and her hilarity.

        • Nicole Chubb

Yes! She sounds like an airhead, but when you listen to what she says, every sentence is carefully constructed with hilarity.

I love her so much. If I could pick anyone in the world to be my best friend, she’d be at the top of my list. :)

    • Anniebet

Sorry, I can’t like the dress… the color is too muddy for her, at least on my monitor.

    • Sobaika

I think there’s a super thin belt happening (unless that’s part of the dress) and those shoes deserve to be burned in hellfire.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

We thought it was the way the dress was shaped, but you’re not the only one seeing a belt, so we might be wrong on that one.

really??? That makes her look huge!!

      • The Lady

While it definitely looks better when she’s sitting, I think she is a little heavier than usual right now. I don’t think it’s the dress. Don’t get me wrong- I love her to pieces, so it’s not a slam or anything, but as a chubster myself, no dress in the world can hide it once you hit a certain weight.

    • julnyes

      The dress is definitely cute.

    • nannypoo

It’s not flattering up or down, but she’s cute anyway. The shoes are from hell.

I think its bad standing up and sitting down. It makes her look much bigger than she probably is. Burn that, and the shoes ASAP.

    • miagain

I love her…. shoes be damned…..(though they are hideous)

    • largishbearishAtlish

      Holy Sack-Dress T’lo!

    • http://www.facebook.com/CameronETurner Cameron Turner

I knew the minute she walked out last night with this on that 1)I would vote it OUT if asked and 2) it would show up here today…..

    • Chris

While this is not the most flattering dress standing up, I do love Mindy Kaling and I applaud the fact that she is not afraid to take chances and will try the risky choices. I also love how she owns being what she calls “normal American woman size” and her confessed obsession with sparkle. Her show also makes me laugh out loud.

    • Judy_S

I think it’s a great dress for the situation. It’s interesting without being distracting.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

It’s just okay sitting down, although, it does cover the lady bits. But standing up, it’s just underwhelming.

    • http://www.facebook.com/candice.booth.79 Candice Booth

I have the largest girl crush on her.

    • http://twitter.com/lettergirl Dawn

Her shoes look like she wrapped her feet and ankles in black duct tape. Why? WHY???

    • bellafigura1

Mmn, I don’t know. Yes, color, yes, print, but it gets a little overly blouse-y when she sits. It looks as wide as it does long.

    • Tuneful54

That dress does her NO favors. She is full-figured, and the clingy knit, its length, and the blouson effect around her midsection make her look heavier than she is. Plus, the colors are ugly. You all have covered the shoes. All of it, OUT.
