Miley Cyrus in Balmain

Posted on May 20, 2013

Y’know… we’re gonna give her this one.

Miley Cyrus attends the 2013 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada in a Balmain jumpsuit paired with Givenchy sandals.

Balmain Spring 2013 Collection/Model: Anna Selezneva (SILENT)

Givenchy Black Leather Shark-Lock Heel

Yes, she looks like a mime, and her makeup’s too harsh, and the shoes are a really odd choice for the outfit, and the nails are HELLA tacky with the outfit, but considering how many of the attendees heard “Billboard Awards” and heard “GET NAKED ON THE RED CARPET,” we think this makes a fun, slightly chic (if more than a bit overworked) look. If nothing else, it’s different. And it’s hard to be different when everyone shows up looking for the maximum amount of attention. But isn’t there something refreshing about a gal who decided that, instead of flashing her tits or ass at the cameras, she’d instead wear almost-literal clown clothes.  Besides, there’s a certain air of Elvis about the look and that’s kind of cool, given the venue.

she has an interesting vegas-clown thing going on here

  • decormaven

The metallic nails and less than fresh pedicure bug, but this is an appropriate outfit for the venue. Interesting style for hair- it does suit her face, though.

    • 3boysful

That was my first thought–awards in her industry, wearing Balmain, and she couldn’t get a fresh pedi?

  • decormaven

The metallic nails and less than fresh pedicure bug, but this is probably an appropriate outfit for the venue. Interesting hair style, but it suits her face.

  • It’s a op-art+doily update of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. The spangly harlequin cutouts on the back are pure Nomi Malone.

    • E. D.

I second the Queen of Hearts, but it also looks like it should be hanging on a hook holding some plants.

    • I’m just seeing Harley Quinn goes to Vegas.

      • drdarke

YES, @facebook-537771651:disqus ! Harley Quinn is exactly what she looks like!

Now they just need to find her a Poison Ivy and they can do a Supervillainess movie together….

  • makeityourself

Anytime there is an air of Elvis, it’s good with me.

Her jumpsuit reminded me of Gene Kelly in one of his clown costumes, but that’s okay too. Didn’t realize she had so many interesting little tats.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

His black & white outfit from the ball scene at the end of An American in Paris. Yes. Lovely. Anything that makes me think of Gene Kelly is okay by me!

      • akprincess72

  • Missy Covington

I don’t…hate it. I think the crochet part is super-interesting. I’d like to see what it would look like with an alternate contrasting fabric in place of the diamond sparkles. Perhaps a saturated solid?

  • lundibleu

I kind of love it. She’s been doing not too bad recently. Also, she has great bone structure and is starting to look like an adult rather than a kid these days.

    • I agree, it freaks me out that I seem to be into Miley Cyrus’ style now though. I feel like I’ve hit a wormhole.

      • lundibleu

Yeah, I looked at this and the Met Ball outfit and thought “holdonaminute, when did she start looking like an actual grown up” – like you, I feel like I’m in some kind of alternate reality.

  • homofascist

I saw this last night and really responded well to it. I don’t know how many other people could have pulled off that look…

  • Latin Buddy

I love it. Anyone else look at her recent style choices and even streetwear and immediately think “Papa Don’t Preach”-early 90s Madonna?

  • RebeccaKW

I honestly think this works for her. I can’t imagine anyone else in this, but it’s perfect for Miley.

  • Mrs. Julien

I actually hate it less close up.

  • snarkykitten

Hey Mistah J, you like my outfit?

    • Squarah

      Haute Harley Quinn for sure.

  • Janet B

This looks fantastic on her, perfect for the event.

  • I read “almost-literal clown clothes” as “almost-cliteral clothes”. Apt for the general standards of the event. I hate what she is wearing but she is wearing it well.

  • TheAmericaness

She looks like a pawn – anyone remember that live-action version of Alice in Wonderland from the 80’s with Carol Channing and a ton of guest appearances – even John Stamos! – well she looks like she’d fit into that.

She has a lot of little tats. I wonder how many.

    • Many. Too many? Not my call but my general feeling is go big or go home on tattoos.

      • Agreed. I really cringe to see all these chicken-scratchy little tattoos. It looks like in-class doodling from 8th grade that you can never wash off.

    • Danielle

So many. It’s like she loves tattoos, but can’t stand to sit in the chair and take the pain for more than 10 minutes at a time.

  • shawnhunter

oh man i really like this. there’s just this was that she and katy perry have fun with their fashion that i enjoy.

  • Yeahhhhh….no. And I really tried. Her body is amazing, her face is gorgeous, I like the super bold lip, those shoes are sex…but the rest is just too much I can’t. I do want good things for her though, so as Uncles said, I’d rather see her in this than in something Heidi K would push her down for.

  • KayEmWhy

The Harlequin pant I think would have looked better with a long white overlay that’s on trend instead of it being part of the piece, other wise maybe a short skirt would also have worked better with boots. But there I go changing things….

  • Griffinqueen

I just see ticky, tacky trailer park everytime I see a picture of this girl. Bad bleach job with roots? Harsh red lipstick? Glitter nails? The vision leaves me breathless with the imagined cloud of aquanet. I’ll bet she used those Givenchy heels to kick aside empty cans of PBR to get out of the Limo.

Worthy of this fine fashion blog? Sorry, guys, I–Just–Can’t.

    • charlotte

I agree. I’m all “Ugh” everytime I see her. This fabricated image of her (which I think it is) does nothing to me, same as the previous, good girl one. Perhaps the real Miley is very different from the way she comes across.

    • jen

Don’t for get all the random little tattoos that look like she did them herself while in prison!

      • Griffinqueen

Thank you, Jen–there was so much whirling through my mind, I knew I’d forget something.
Ankle and Ass Zippers! See–there’s another one. <3

      • mightbewrong

Ha, I was going to mention that. She looks like she got bored in class and started drawing on herself.

  • claudemtl777

She certainly gets an A for effort…she wears it well… if Balmain made it, it is so someone wears it, so it might as well be her…
…What is she doing now? Is she a singer? an actress? I only see red carpets pictures or pictures of her smoking pot or eating from a dick-shaped cake…

    • demidaemon

Lats I heard she was working on a new album but taking her time on it.

  • teensmom99

Okay, you got me with Elvis. You’re right. Before I read that part, I was going to say that she’s gone back to her grandma from Miami look–if your grandma were going to Billboard Music event and knew that she was supposed to dress “wild.” But now I see the Elvis homage.

  • lbl

I hate everything everything about this outfit, but I think she looks great in it. You win, Miley.

  • Nimerha

The older I get, the more I enjoy Miley (perhaps corresponding to my baby sister growing up and enjoying her less). And I think this outfit his hilarious and endearing, and her shoes downright covetable.

But man, do her shitty tattoos make me twitch.

  • I actually liked this one. Except her ROOTS. For the love of all things sacred, get those done girl.

    • Sara__B

The roots look good that way, or so my late-20s daughter tells me.

  • MzzPants

Given her history with spaniel hair, animal skull jewelry, and broomstick skirts, I find her new rock-n-roll image refreshing. And, hell, if you can’t wear it in your 20’s, when can you wear it?

  • VicD

I wish Madge had worn this.

  • fashionzombie

I hear what you are saying, but all I see is bedazzled macrame.

    • I should have scrolled down before I left my comment 🙂 Exactly.

  • MoHub

One of Freddy Mercury’s old costumes?

    • ballerinawithagun

Yes, didn’t Freddy have some legging/tights that looked alot like this?

      • MoHub

Freddy had a full-on, skin-tight Harlequin bodysuit cut into a deep U in the front to expose his chest.

  • understateddiva

Sorry, but this is for A-level clothes-wearers only. She’s made dramatic strides, but I think this is out of her league.

  • kittenwithaquip

I’m not sure what it is, but ever since she cut her hair I’m drawn to read the posts about her. It was a pretty bold move considering the spaniel hair on most starlets, and I can appreciate a young woman who experiments with her look. I don’t always agree with her choices, but I still find her much more interesting than some of her peers.

  • Qitkat

You know what bugs? That safety pin on her bracelet, even though it seems to be an original part of it. Everything else, well it is the Billboards. She clearly loves Fashion and Dressing Up. I’d like to see her and Kelly Osborne duke it out.

    • demidaemon

They are best friends, FYI. i do wonder if that is why she hasn’t appeared on Fashion Police.

  • Every time I see finger tattoos, I think jailhouse jobs. I just can’t with those. I’m not sold on the outfit, but I suppose it is better than Jennifer Morrison’s.

  • stoprobbers

I… was not expecting pants when I scrolled down. AT ALL.

  • Qitkat

I just realized she has almost a Queen Nefertiti profile. Which is kind of cool.

  • YoungSally

As Queen Dolly would say — It costs a lot of money to look this cheap

    • MoHub

But Queen Dolly owns it and then some.

  • PastryGoddess

Somehow knowing that those are all rhinestones helps things. I love the shoes and would cut a bitch for them

  • CommentsByKatie

I guess Miley has taught me to be wary, because when I looked at the thumbnail, I mentally begged, ‘Please be a cocktail length dress. Please be a cocktail length dress.’ And of course it’s a glittery clown jumpsuit. Bless.

  • jw_ny

Considering the venue…she looks fantastic. Over the top is ok. Love this crocheted jumpsuit, but it almost feels like jumpsuits are becoming her thing…

  • I dunno, I’m liking her more and more lately. And I think this outfit is a win. I would have said “why didn’t she wear this to the Met Gala”, but since her outfit for the gala was AMAZEBALLS, I don’t have to. WTG Miley.

  • Kate4queen

    I actually like it!

  • I see bedazzled macrame planter. But that said, there’s something compelling about it…or not. I can’t make up my mind with this one.

  • Somebody please put a picture of Tammy Faye Baker next to that close up of her face. She also probably has an air conditioned dog house built by the lord almighty.

  • Rand Ortega

Vegas & Elvis were precisely Olivier Rousteing’s inspiration. It’s cray, sparkly, stupid & hot. She looks awesome rockin’ it. Perfect for the venue.

  • JasmineAM

I mean, girl, you couldn’t get a good pedicure before an awards show? Jesus. That big toe needs some TLC.

  • I commented on this on Facebook yesterday; I really like this. But I wish she wasn’t sporting boyband frosted tips, the hair is not working for me. But look at her working it in that last picture! She’s at least working on her fashion-wearing BA, since she’s not quite at Masters level.

  • alyce1213

Am I really going to say it? I love this. This is exactly what she should have worn.
Her personal styling (hair, random tattoos, harsh makeup) leave much to be desired, but this is one super crazy Balmain jumpsuit and damn if she doesn’t look great in it.
This and the Met Gala — she’s two for two.

  • Nice_Shirt

I feel a kinship with Miley that I’ve never felt before – because I just discovered from this picture that she has teensy-tiny toenails just like mine. Forget fancy pedicures, just dot ’em with color and we’re done.

  • bellafigura1

I feel ya, I do, but the knitted sections going in at the knees is a problem for me. It destroys the look, which is a lot of look in the first place, by forcing her knees to look knocked. The knit panels should have run straight down the side of the leg.

  • crash1212

Would’ve been totally on board if this were a dress instead of jump suit. As it is, still a good look for her and the event. I love those shoes.

  • SylviaFowler

Adore it on the model. Miley is too short for it. I wish Rosie Huntington had worn this first.

  • conniemd

I like it, except for the exposed back zipper. It’s original and eye-catching.

  • Airkisses

This is like something Kirsen Steward woudl wear, no? Not in the literal sense, perhaps more in the spirit.

  • Diego!

This looks like a Project Runway look from two or three seasons ago… I will look for the look and post the link right back here!

    • Qitkat

I’d like to see that, because no designer on PR could possibly create something this detailed in the 7 or so working hours that make up a one-day challenge. (Actually said by one of the recent contestants.)

      • Diego!

I got it!!! Check this out! (second outfit) html

      • Diego!

They didn’t allow me to post the link here 🙁 Try unify everything here and search for it: www tomandlorenzo com/2009/09/team-russia-2 html

  • WHY DO I LIKE THIS?! I think I’m losing it. Another example of “this only works in THIS venue.”

  • Pennymac

That last pic, the over the shoulder one, is faboo. I however, must draw the line at wicker thigh guards.

  • j_anson

I would NEVER have imagined that this is how Billy Ray Cyrus’ daughter would turn out. I kinda like this for being crazy, if nothing else.

  • SewingSiren

Harlequin .Cout jester. Fool. Susan Powter. I don’t like.

  • God, I love her. But her makeup has been not the best lately, agree.

  • Luna

Can’t say I’m her biggest fan, but I’m starting to really like her whole style. She’s so deliberately cray-cray that it becomes cool and kinda chic.

  • guest2visits

Loud as it is, it’s sexy without the tacky overexposure. Much like her Met outfit; I like this – it fits her personality completely. Hate the scratchy tats and the crusty looking gold nails. Luv those shoes but not the beach feet in them.
Again – this is right for the occasion. Not for Starbucks or any of the other places Miley is apt to try it out.

  • It’s a great Rock ‘N Roll look for the venue.

  • colleenjanel

I don’t like the outfit, but I’m willing to give her props for rolling her eyes after announcing Beiber’s award. Awesome!

  • barbarienne

I want to go to the notions store, buy a fuckton of heavy-duty zippers, and then go beat every fashion designer in the world with them while shouting “No–more–exposed–zippers!”

  • Looks like a jumpsuit for a matador! TOTALLY lost me at the EXPOSED ZIPPER! Tacky!

  • MilaXX

I love the entire look, even the nails. Really digging this new style on Miley.

    • Qitkat

I’ve come to the conclusion that many celebrities consider their nails an actual accessory, thus all the *pinterest* looks which are so predominant lately. I don’t mind, it’s changed me from someone who never ever looked at the nails to admiring some of the more creative and even outlandish styles.

      • MilaXX

They really are. I don’t mind them as long as they don’t distract from the outfit. Even thought I like nail art, I think it needs to be very subtle or nonexistent with couture.

  • The crochet parts are amazing!

  • Ummy

This look intrigues me. I’m loving the lower half of it, and most of the back (the zipper probably shouldn’t look like it’s disappearing into right into her ladyparts). I’m not quite sold on the panel on her chest.

Thoughts on the garment aside, I think she’s rocking the look.

  • plinkiedoodle

    Too overworked for my taste.

  • quiltrx

I didn’t realize until I started a fashion board on Pinterest how MUCH of a Balmain fan I really am! I love the complexity of their looks–lots of texture and pattern but usually not “too much” to my eye.
So of course I really like this! Bold and fun, and not “dirty whore” like so many of the outfits there LOL.

    • tereliz

Hugely unabashed Balmain fan. I don’t have the body or the flair to wear any of their dresses or jumpsuits, but I just love how dramatic the runway always looks, and how fierce lady stars look when they’re doing it right. I’m a big fan of texture and pattern as well. Maybe someday I’ll have the money to splurge on an amazing Balmain jacket!

  • Checkerboard croch. Checkerboard croch. That’s all I can see, and now I’ll never UN-see it.

  • demidaemon

I love this. It’s cool, sexy, and different. Keep it up, Miley!

  • bd73

    harley quinn?

  • Couture court jester? TLo, you didn’t ask but she’s getting an OUT. She looks like a RPDR contestant on the runway.

  • Lesley

if there is anyone who can rock this outfit it’s miley. i’ve noticed though lately alll of her looks tend to be way over done, i guess it’s part of her new image or something.

  • lrober03

I actually love the front, not so enamored with the back

  • “air of Elvis” – how do you guys always know EXACTLY how to say things?!

    • Yeah I didn’t know where they were going with their critique…because my god she looks ridiculous but then they said “air of Elvis” and you’re right they pegged it exactly.

  • I like it a LOT. Hate her hair and too-harsh makeup, though.

  • Mary Saucier

I’m going to disagree with the ‘too harsh make-up’ assessment. With a look this strong, she needs an equally strong face. Otherwise the outfit is wearing her.

  • MartyBellerMask

This is all kinds of fierce, IMO. Work it Miley!

  • Shoelover1512

How do you pee in a jumpsuit? That’s always my first thought when it comes to jumpsuits. Does someone have to come in the bathroom with you and hold your outfit while you pee?

  • tereliz

This jumpsuit would be laughable on anyone else, but she’s making it work. LOVE those shoes.

  • imakeart

That jumpsuit has to be so uncomfortable!

  • Wish it was a short skirt instead of pants.

  • Kristobel

Harley Quinn via Las Vegas realness.

  • Tracy_Flick

It’s depressing that all it takes to get a thumbs-up is “Hey, I can’t see her genitalia!” Overworked is right. Shrink this look down and put it on a little clown statue on an old lady’s knick-knack shelf.

  • RuthGo

I really think there was something about having her hair cut and bleached that suddenly clarified her fashion style for her. Remember, for a while she was flailing, she dressed like her grandma or she was generic or trashy. Now it’s like totally in focus and there’s really a “Miley Cyrus look”. I think this outfit is in her brand new, spiffy wheelhouse and I think she’s rocking it. There are definite quibbles but overall, I kind of love it.

  • Yesss! Major OUT!

  • Qitkat

I see the resemblance. I never did figure out exactly how it remained so form-fitting. I was disappointed that Gordana was party to this travesty. There was a lot of distaste for this outfit, as I recall.
I’m more impressed that you retained the memory of a look from a season so long ago = )

    • Diego!

Thank you! 😀 I have to admit I have photographic memory haha, it’s true!
I also remember Nina tearing that outfit apart hahaha It will remain always inside my head. LOL 😛

  • Mlzx

This chick is cool. She’s won me over.

  • kimiakay

Boy she really is carrying this off. I love it on her. I can’t think of anyone who could do it better, at the moment. I love those shoes. Her makeup is too…something, bright? maybe? but it doesn’t deflect too much from the overall look. I can’t get over how she has grown up, or something, with her style choices. She is rarely so sloppy anymore, even when the clothes don’t quite work. Attagirl, Miley.

  • halo323

Maybe it’s just me, and maybe I walk with my feet unusually close together, but I would slash the hell out of my ankles with those spiky things sticking out of the straps on those shoes.

Note to shoe designers: sharp pointy things on the OUTSIDE side of shoes, please!

  • alwaysanswerb

At some bizarre point in my life I became a fan of Miley Cyrus, public figure. She’s starting to get carte blanche with me for marrying two seemingly at-odds ideals:not giving a fuck and putting an effort in.

  • librarygrrl64

    It’s just all….too much…
