Met Gala WERQ: Taylor Swift in J. Mendel

Posted on May 08, 2013

Nicely done, Miss Tay. We never could have predicted it.

Taylor Swift attends the 2013 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in a J. Mendel gown and clutch accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Bringing out your bad girl is ever so much more fun and fabulous, don’t you find? Love the hair, love the eyes, love the sexy, edgy quality of the dress, which couldn’t be more unexpected.

You WERQ that side-ass, Princess.

Goodness, Gwynnie is giving her fashion lessons. This just won’t do.

    • formerlyAnon

Oh you KNOW this was chosen weeks or months ago and she had a hissy fit when the Paltrow photos came out.

      • DeborahJozayt

There’s now a voodoo doll In Swift’s arsenal with an affinity for cooking fabulous home-cooked meals and offering unsolicited advice.

        • Deb_Lynn

Her next song’s lyrics will include ‘stolen sheer panels’

    • Chra

I’m not surprised she took fashion lessons from Gwynnie – her level of
self-regard certainly seems to be revving up to Gwyneth levels.

  • aeb1986

ahh yes i was waiting for you to feature this! total WERQ! i love her so much more as a bad girl than a “good girl angel princess”…. this dress is fantastic.

  • Sobaika

Let’s all take a minute to accept that at the Met Gala Taylor Swift managed to outdo Gwen Stefani, Beyonce, and Nicki Minaj combined.

    • RIGHT?

      • Sobaika

Starting on my underground bunker for the apocalypse right now.

        • Nicholas

Statues are crying blood, dogs are barking in the streets, frogs are falling from the sky …

          • Okiewankenobi

Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!

          • Rand Ortega

            Ghostbusters shoutout!!!

        • decormaven

Make room for some more Bitter Kittens. The hooves of the Four Horsemen are pounding.

        • Rand Ortega

          Will there be cocktails?

          • Sobaika

            These events require hard liquor.

        • Given the event you’ve just described, it is probably far, far too late for you to be thinking about a bunker. Best to just get shit-faced and what for the end to come. At least, that’s my plan for the weekend.

    • theblondette

I was just going to comment that isn’t it weird that the tweenie princesses like Miley and Taylor are doing it better than the supposedly edgy ladies like Nicki and Gwen…

      • I think they didn’t feel too cool for school to actually adhere to the punk suggestion.

      • Imasewsure

Yes – and I think we need to open our hearts up a just a little bit to the few
who really did the Gala up right… shows some wit and some hidden kick
        ass that we should support!!

  • quiltrx

I pointed this one out to my hubby and proclaimed, “even T and Lo are going to declare this awesome…just watch!” It’s a fantastic gown and she looks like she was having fun with it. Good for you, girl.

  • filmcricket

Apparently the 958th guest to confuse goth with punk. Also, ugh. I didn’t like it on Gwyneth and I don’t like it here.

  • Sarah

Ya know, I don’t mind the hair from the front, but that close up is looking an awful lot like she’s got it half-pinned up in preparation for a wig. I don’t care for the ability to see scalp. Dress rocks pretty hard, though.

    • Daisy Walker

Her hair color near the scalp is atrocious. And the rest of it is almost as bad. Either go blond or go brunette–the neither-here-nor-there mousy color does nothing for her skin tone. Too matchy.

    • lrober03

I think she’s suffering through the pains of growing out her bangs. Definitely looks worse the closer you get

  • Squarah

That hair is seriously hideous and her face really needs bangs, be they side-swept or blunt. Boo, hiss. Dress is alright but forgettable.

    • MilaXX

I think she looks more grown up without bangs.

    • Really? I saw the beginning of dreads which I thought was kind of cool. I could be blinded by the sultry black she is sporting.

    • Spicytomato1

I’m with you on the hair. To me she looks like a suburban girl who crimped it to be edgy. From the neck down she looks fab.

  • j_anson

She always looks better when she embraces the fact that fundamentally, she just looks kind of evil.

    • Adriana_Paula

I have never loved a comment more than this in my life.

      • j_anson

It’s true, right? Like, when she’s dressing all goody-two-shoes she just looks like a bad girl who’s trying to LOOK like a good girl. It’s irritating.

  • Not loving the visible bobby pins. Is that what those are?

  • MilaXX

More rock and roll than punk, but still a good look. I must say though, on the thumbnail I was getting Nicole Kidman.

    • I was getting Kendra What’s Her Name, the reality “celebrity”.

      • sekushinonyanko

Hugh Hefner’s ex girlfriend? That Kendra?

  • pulpytomato

She doesn’t look bad at all. But she still manages to make this look boring. How is that possible?

  • Woohoo she shut it down! Love the slight dreads in her hair, the black polish and her makeup is superb. It’s a little goth but I’m not gonna hate she looks gorgeous. Also who is I. The background in the tartan dress?

  • Taylor as a vixen? I like it!

  • colleenjanel

Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus both got WERQs?? What the hell is going on? God help us!

    • bxbourgie

I know! It’s like we’re in an alternate universe or something…

  • Mariah J

I think this is the best she’s ever looked…I usually hate the way she dresses.

  • She really did kill it. And it really drives home the point that the side ass look actually works for a much younger lady. Gwyneth, you’ve been served.

    • makeityourself

Upon close inspection, I believe that important sections of Taylor’s side ass dress are underlined with nude fabric, hence creating the illusion that you are really seeing side ass. Which you are not. The Most Beautiful Woman in the World did not feel the need to do the same last week.

      • aykhan

I think you’re right – there’s a subtle difference in colour between the areas her skin shows through. This is how you do sheer side panels without looking horribly tacky and vulgar. Since this is Taylor Swift we’re talking about, I now need a double of bourbon and a lie-down.

  • surfergirl70

And THAT, Gwyneth, is how you do sheer panels.

  • bluefish

She looks cheap. Sorry, love you gentlemen but really don’t like this look. Including the dress. Not much point in a whole lot of leg and side panoramas if she’s left without a neck. Her hair looks like she got off a hard day at the cafeteria lunch line. Half expecting to see Dirk Diggler show up as her evening escort.

  • prettybigkitty

It’s a bizzaro world where Miley and Taylor are WERKING it. Weird.

  • Janet B

I never thought that Taylor would out Punk so many but she’s a total WERQ.

I should have known that she’s probably a very good student and did her homework.

  • stubbornthoughts

Yep, absolutely. And if there’s ever a time to break out the black nail polish on a red carpet, it’s now. Well played, Tay.

  • CommentsByKatie

Love the dress, love the sexiness, make-up, vibe, etc. The hair is kind of ratty and limp for me, though, although I guess that can be punk-ish. I guess it wouldn’t be the same with sleek hair…all right uncles, you win, the hair is appropriate and this is Werqing for me. 🙂

  • Nonmercisansfacon

It’s painful for me to admit, but yes, WERQ it Swift.

  • mhleta

Yeah, the little girl is gone. Taylor embracing her inner Woman has been a beautiful thing to behold.

  • Julie

I just can’t with the side butt.

  • alyce1213

I’m not a fan of lace or sheer panels or cutouts, but this is GORGEOUS.

Definitely a WERQ for Miss Tay.

  • PrunellaV

Eh. Whatever, Princess. So first we had sideboob, and now we also have sideass.

  • jetpackdino

    Wow. Miley… and now Taylor…

The girls who nailed it vs. the girls who failed it is astounding. Is this for real or is Wintour just fucking with us?

  • teensmom99

    Standing o

  • a_liking

can I just say that I am in LOVE with her perpetually arched right eyebrow.

  • Airkisses

Goodness, is the see-through side panel going to be a trend now? Because I actually *like* wearing underwear…

  • Rand Ortega

While I count her as 1 of the attendees who confused goth w/ punk, I love how she looks. That dress is giving me LIFE.

  • I love the front but I hate it from the sides.
Also, the only moment you need red lipstick, Tay!!

  • She’s a pretty little rat.

  • JauntyJohn

Oooh. Okay. NOW I get it. This is the Met Gala from the Backwards Planet, where Nicki Minaj and Gwen Stefani have no real style or edge and Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift are the cool, fresh, fashion forward ones. Okay. Now it all makes sense. If anyone sees a madman with a blue box around to take me back home tell him I’m ready to go now. Thanks!

  • Finally, a de-virginized Taylor. I like!!

  • frannyprof

She’s orange and the hair is awful.. But the dress looks better on her than it did on GooP.

  • embers618

It’s like Gwynnie’s Side Ass dress and Allison Williams’ frankendress had a baby and, in some freak twist of genetics, it actually looks good.

  • clairellis

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, love her. She is more punk than the princess of punk (Gwen Stefani) and she doesn’t look ridiculous doing it either. So glad she got a WERQ bc she deserves. Hands down.

  • Omg…she’s so haute. lol

  • roche

Hmm. This was among my least favorite dresses. I like the netting pattern, but the shoulder embellishment is sort of militaristic, and paired with that hairdo – yuk. The overall look is more Hollywood glam to me than punk.

  • She looks great, side p—y panel and all. She totally got the memo.

  • SewingSiren

Pretty. But the hair was dyed with Kool-Aide.

    • formerlyAnon

Which is probably the most punk thing about the ensemble, no?

  • formerlyAnon

She’s neither fish nor flesh nor good red herring.

Neither Our Usual Tey, More Stylish New Tey, Standard Couture, nor Couture with Authentic Punk Touches – she looks like a former high school cheerleader (one of the passive-aggressive good girl ones, not the uber-popular sweetheart, the not-so-secret slut nor the Queen Bee bitch) who’s somehow wound up with an invitation to the Met Gala, a theme that encompasses a bit of sexy, and access to expensive couture. And she went for broke. AND THE GIRL DONE GOOD.

Consider all references to the coming Apocalypse and/or End Times seconded.

  • MandyM

See? Stupid Gwenyth Paltow should have worn her ugly dress to this event instead. This is the best Taylor has ever looked. Maybe SHE should have been named the most beautiful woman in the world.

  • pattycap11

as good a look for her as the mod ’60s everyone keeps putting her in. shows off her crazy mean side, which i suspect is what you get when you scratch the gumdrop surface. she should smile less often. suits her.

  • Imasewsure

I did not recognize her. She looks amazing and also nailed the spider gown that tends to go so hiddy (cue Allison Williams for instance). Props to Ms. Tay!!

  • It looks like Tay’s side-ass is actually lined (?). And for that, I salute her. This is another example of another youngster putting the older ladystars to shame. Though, her hair desperately needs a hot oil treatment.

  • TSkot

That hair? A werq?? You guys are slipping.

  • This is not werqing for me at all. Looks more Stevie Nicks inspired. Maybe it’s the hair.

  • Diego!

If you hadn’t mention her name, I wouldn’t have realized who she was. Amazing look! You werq that transformation country girl!

  • lobsterlen

Miley and Taylor are the WERQ for the Met punk costume ball! I am heading to Lowe’s to buy supplies because today I start building ark. Surely this is a sign of the end of days.

  • RebeccaKW

Not really punk, other than the colored streaks in her hair. But she looks great, and really, that’s all I ask. If you aren’t going to embrace the theme, at least look kick-ass in the route you do choose.

  • anotherkate

She looks like an adult! A really sexy, powerful, beautiful adult! Nicely done.

  • lilibetp

At least part of the mesh is lined. Not enough of it, but part…

  • tereliz

Great dress, great eye makeup, wish she’d done more streaks, but yup, this is a WERQ!

    • pop_top

I agree more streaks! Because you can barely see the ones there.
I think she looked awesome. I don’t know how punk it was b/c I don’t know anything about punk, but she rocked her look.

  • Take that, Gwyneth.

  • WERQ? Really? She looks very good, but I think this looks very similar to the dresses she wore to the Brit Awards the ACM Awards, and the black-dress-with-sheer-cutouts thing has been done to death.

  • Kate4queen

I didn’t even recognize her for a minute! Which was good.

  • KAO TV

she looks great, i’ll give her that BUT..Gwyneth just recently did that side thingy, that made her looks like a copycat 🙂

  • MarissaLG

I personally don’t love the hair. It’s super hard to look chic in a half pony. Other than that, she looks fab.

  • Annie Lure

Nicely done. It possesses edge without being too severe (there’s plenty of feminine touches from the flowing skirt portion to the mesh leg panels). The cutouts are beautifully rendered; there’s nothing gimmick-y about them at all. The bejeweled neck-and-shoulder treatments adds a touch of opulence. This is great!

  • Is sideass becoming a thing? Please say it’s not becoming a thing.

  • It looks like there is a nude lining under the lace and it appears to end at mid-thigh, which makes this gown sexy instead of tacky, as Gwennie’s gown was.

  • shelley514

Wow, Snaps Taylor. You are wearing that dress girl!

  • kathrineb

Yay! She really looks good with some edge!

  • librarygrrl64

As an Old, it makes me sad that the people who weren’t even born in the punk era seem to be the only ones close to getting the theme right. 😉
